• Build vs Rebuild

  Build means compile and link only the source files that have changed since the last build, while Rebuild means compile and link all source files regardless of whether they changed or not. Build is the normal thing to do and is faster. Sometimes the versions of project target components can get out of sync and rebuild is necessary to make the build successful. In practice, you never need to Clean. Build or Rebuild Solution builds or rebuilds all projects in the your solution, while Build or Rebuild <project name> builds or rebuilds the StartUp project. To set the StartUp project, right click on the desired project name in the Solution Explorer tab and select Set as StartUp project. The project name now appears in bold. Compile just compiles the source file currently being edited. Useful to quickly check for errors when the rest of your source files are in an incomplete state that would prevent a successful build of the entire project. Ctrl-F7 is the shortcut key for Compile. All source files that have changed are saved when you request a build/rebuild, so you don't have to save them first. When you run your executable (F5 or Ctrl-F5), Visual Studio saves all your changed source files and builds anything that changed, so you don't need to explicitly do those steps every time. This allows for quick "trial and error" debugging. • Is it viable to make a port from a C++ application to Java through LLVM

  how viable is it to port a C++ application to Java bytecode using LLVM (I guess LLJVM)? The thing is that we currently have a process written in C++ but a new client has made mandatory to been able to run the program in a multiplatform way, using the Java Virtual Machine with obviously no native code (no JNI). The idea is to be able to take the generated jar and copy then to different systems (Linux, Win, 32 bits - 64 bits) and it should just work. Looking around looks like it is possible to compile C++ to LLVM IR code and then that code to java bytecode. There is no need of the generated code to be readable. I have test a bit with similar things using emscripten, this takes C++ code and compile it to JavaScript. The result is valid JS but totally unreadable (looks like assambler). Does anybody done a port of an application from C++ to Java bytecode using this tecnique? What problems could we face? Is a valid approach for production code? Note: I am aware that currently we have some non standard C++ and close source libraries, we are looking to removing this non standard code and all close source libraries and use Free Libre Open Source Software, so lets suppose all code is standard C++ code with all code available at compile time. Note: It is not an option to write portable C++ code and then compile it to the desired target platform, the compiled program must be mltiplatform thus the use of JVM (right now we are not looking in similar solutions but Python or other language base, but i would also like to heard about it)

• How do I use Sketchflow sample data for a ListBoxItem Template at design time?

  I am using Expression Blend 4 and Visual Studio 2010 to create a Sketchflow prototype. I have a Sample Data collection and a ListBox that is bound to it. This displays as I would expect both at design time and at run time. However, the ListBoxItem template it just complex enough that I wanted to pull it out into its own XAML file. Even though the items still render as expected in the main ListBox where the template is used, when I open the template itself, all of the databound controls are empty. If I add a DataContext to the template, I can see and work with the populated objects while in the template, but then that local DataContext overrides the DataContext set on the listbox. A bit of code will illustrate. Start by creating a Sketchflow project (I am using Silverlight, but it should work the same for WPF), then add a project data source called SampleDataSource. Add a collection called ListData, with a single String property called Title.   I keep getting this error: 'An AVPlayerItem can occupy only one position in a player's queue at a time.' I NSLog'd the players items, and none of them seem to be equal. Further, I added this just to be sure: if([player canInsertItem:itemToAdd afterItem:nil]) [player insertItem:itemToAdd afterItem:nil]; When I wasn't sure if that would work (can have two identical items in different memory locations) I wrote a category method to test if a player contains an item or something identical to it. Yet, I'm still getting the error. I've seen several posts of people getting this error with MPMoviePlayerController, but I'm not using that custom class, just the out of the box AVQueuePlayer. Any ideas on how to fix this?

• One row is skipped each time the program scans a matrix from file !

  Hello there, I had this code working yesterday, but it seems like I edited it a bit and lost the working version. I cant get this to work anymore. I basically want to scan a matrix from a .txt file. But each time it scans the first row, the second one is skipped, and it reads the third instead :( Here is my code : for(i=0;i<=test->rowmat1;i++){ for(j=0;j<=test->colmat1;j++){ fscanf(fin,"%f\t",&test->mat[i][j]); } fscanf(fin,"%*[^\n]",&test->mat[i][j]); } For example, for a matrix of : 1.00 2.00 3.00 4.00 5.00 6.00 7.00 8.00 9.00 10.00 11.00 12.00 If I extract 3 rows and 3 cols, I get : 1.00 2.00 3.00 7.00 8.00 9.00 Then fails, it wants to skip over the second line but there is nothing after 10 11 12 Why did it stop working ? If someone is editing an Excel file (using stand-alone Excel, not Excel services), everyone else will be forced to open the file read-only until the first person is done editing. Is there a way around this? What I want is to allow two or more people to be able to edit the file at the same time. Also, I don't want people to overwrite each other. Instead, I'd like SharePoint to merge their changes. Is this possible in SharePoint 2010?

  When a TabWidget is using intents to designate the target Activity for each tab, is there any special handling of those Activities on the Activity Stack outside of the default operation? For Instance, if my app has tabs A, B, and C, and I click them in this order––A, B, A, C, A, B––how will the Activity stack change? My understanding of the default operation, if startActivity() is called each time on the intent, would have the Stack keep loading up new instances of the activities: A, AB, ABA, ABAC, ABACA, ABACAB It's hard to believe that's how it works though... Seems like it would be a waste of resources and could be endless. Can anyone tell me how this will actually work?

And I set my datagridview control's selectionmode to "CellSelect", and this allow the user to select as many cells as he want which spread over several columns; but I want to constraint my user can only select cells in single column at a time, and there isn't any such kind of selectionmode for me. So If I want to implement this, how can I extend the datagridview class ? I also think that I can check in eventhandler whenever the selection cells are changed, through which I might make the user can not select cells spread over multiple columns, but this is not that good, I think. • Why does my NSWindow only receive mouseOver events the first time?

  I have an application where a borderless window is shown and hidden, using orderOut and orderFront. When it is visible, I want the it to become the key window when the mouse moves over it. So far I've done this: In awakeFromNib I have set its first responder to itself. In the window's constructor I set accepts mouse events to YES. In the mouseMoved method, I use makeKeyAndOrderToFront. My problem is, that this only works the first time I move the mouse over the window. After that, it doesn't receive any mouseOver events. I've tried checking the firstResponder but as far as I can tell it never changes from the window. Any ideas what I can do to get this working?

  I'm developing an app that checks several conditions during an incoming phone call. The main parts of the app are a BroadcastReceiver listening for Intents related to the phone's status and a local Service checking the conditions. At the moment the service is started each time an incoming call is detected and is stopped when the phone status changed back to idle. Now I'm wondering if this procedure is correct and whether it is reasonable to start and stop the service related to the phone's status. Or would it be better to let the service run regardless of the phone's status and bind/unbind to/from it when needed. Are there any performance issues I would have to think about? Perhaps it is more expensive to start/stop a service than letting it run and communicate with it. Are there any best practices out there regarding the implementation of services?

  I would like to display real time updates on a web page (based on a status field in a database table that is altered by an external process). Based on my research, there are several ways of doing this. Long Polling (Comet) - This seems to be complex to implement Regular Polling - I can have an AJAX method trigger a database hit every 5seconds to get the current status. But I fear this will have performance issues. Then I read about using SqlCacheDependency - basically the cache gets invalidated based on a field in the table. I am assuming I can use the event trigerred when the cache is invalidated to show the new update to the user? What's an easy solution that will not have performance issues? anyone?

• Why doesn't Maven's mvn clean ever work the first time?

  Nine times out of ten when I run mvn clean on my projects I experience a build error. I have to execute mvn clean multiple times until the build error goes away. Does anyone else experience this? Is there any way to fix this within Maven? If not, how do you get around it? I wrote a bat file that deletes the target folders and that works well, but it's not practical when you are working on multiple projects. I am using Maven 2.2.1. • VS2010 patce: why it's take so muce time to install it?

  Visual Studio 2010 RC has a few of patches release. For more information about them take a look here. What I'm expect from patch program, is to replace a few dll's of the program to a new fixed version of them. But when I run each of this 3 patches, they take a lot of time (5 minutes each), and you think that the program was frozen because the progress bar stay on the begging. This is question may not be so important, but it really interesting me to know, why this happens? It's really confusing to see that each VS2010 (or Microsoft in general) is frozen to 4-5 minutes.

• Air XmlHttpRequest time out if remote server is offline?

  I'm writing an AIR application that communicates with a server via XmlHttpRequest. The problem that I'm having is that if the server is unreachable, my asynchronous XmlHttpRequest never seems to fail. My onreadystatechange handler detects the OPENED state, but nothing else. Is there a way to make the XmlHttpRequest time out? Do I have to do something silly like using setTimeout() to wait a while then abort() if the connection isn't established? Edit: Found this, but in my testing, wrapping my xmlhttprequest.send() in a try/catch block or setting a value on xmlhttprequest.timeout (or TimeOut or timeOut) doesn't have any affect.

  Hi, I'm choosing between AMQP (RabbitMQ) vs XMPP (eJabberd) for my browser-based flash-free javascript powered real-time turn-based game. I don't know much about AMQP and XMPP protocol. I would like to use PHP for user-authorization and some data store-retrieve with MySQL. As far as I found out, RabbitMQ has PHP clients but eJabberd not. What I understood is javascript client calls PHP script and manipulate necessary processing and then pass to AMQP or XMPP server to pass the data to opponent player. There is a good book 'Pro XMPP Programming with JS and jQuery' from Wrox but there is no example with PHP.
