  Hi Is there a proxy software for Windows XP that can support HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, IMAP, POP, FTP, etc. (the more the better)? We tried apache mod_proxy but FTP doesn't work through it (at least not all features). Maybe we don't need proxy server for following requirements (we are open for suggestions): - Centralized access point to internet for several users (proxy server?) - Users use Browser (firefox/IE - HTTP, HTTPS), Outlook (SMTP, POP, IMAP) - Logs to see where did users go on internet - Possiblity to connect to FTP server Windows xp, which is used as proxy server, is a virtual machine, and all other users/clients are virtual machines as well (Hyper-V)... • Stop a Windows XP taskbar item from blinking forever

  In Windows XP when an application that doesn't currently have the focus wants to attract the user's attention its Taskbar item blinks. Often it blinks 3 times and then stops, which is fine. However, sometimes it just keeps blinking forever. An example of that is Firefox with a new JavaScript confirmation dialog. This is really annoying if I don't want to switch to that application just now - I basically cannot focus on anything else because of this stupid blinking thing distracting me! How do I force all apps to blink only 3 times (or X times) and then stop?

  I installed WAMP server on win xp - it works. I installed Wordpress 3.4.2 into www.wordpress - no problem. In Dreamweaver CS5 I created a site with www.wordpress as root folder, and assigned a local test server - ok. In Dreamweaver, I opened twentyten theme - index.php - and pressed F12 to see the page in Firefox - and got: Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_header()... - on line 16 This is a completely new and clear wordpress installation. Why is the function (get_header) - undefined? To check the server I copied another .php file into the same folder - F12 - it works.

  I lent my 3 USB modem to a friend because her Meteor USB modem had run out of credit. The 3 modem worked on her machine fine once the driver was installed. She bought Meteor credit a couple of days later, uninstalled the 3 driver and she only now seems to get on the Meteor server, when you try IE8 or Firefox you get the message “Page could not be found”. I uninstalled the Meteor driver and reinstalled…no change. The OS is Win_7 home edition. Any help would be much appreciated. Regards to all, oddbyte7.

• Acrobat Reader, and indeed all Adobe products are freezing and crashing on print

  Everything was working fine, right up till I had to do some driver work to get my scanner to work - now I can't seem to print from any Adobe product. I click print and the program freezes, it stops responding, and in the case of Acrobat Reader, it crashes. In the case of In-design CS4, I have to stop the process in task manager, in the case of Fireworks CS3 - I think it just crashes. Printing a PDF hangs and crashes inside of Firefox and IE browsers too. My printer works and I can print from MS Word, Excel and directly by right clicking on a non-Adobe file and choosing print. But when I try it in an Adobe product. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, my version of Adobe Reader is: 10.1.11, Windows is updated, and I don't have any unusual extensions.

• Odd behavior of permissions and icons

  After some virus had infected my Windows 7, I did a complete format and re-installed the OS. I was just installing applications and copying back some data when I noticed some shortcuts changing their icons to something I couldnt recognize (Yellow icons in the image below). Also, a few exe files which previously did not ask for User permission, are now asking for it. Wondering if this is an icon cache problem, I cleared the cache by deleting the IconCache.db in AppData/Local but the problem still persists. Although I did a full system scan with MS Security Essentials, I'm not sure if this is another virus or some other problem. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Edit: Now even Firefox needs permissions to launch. It's icon hasnt changed, but it's got the 'shield' overlay on it like the other yellow icons.

• IPv6 scope id issue with IE

  I have an ASP.NET website that works with Firefox because FF doesn't need the % in the scope-id to be encoded (%25). The website also works on the same machine using IE because I can leave out the scope-id. However, to access the website from another machine in the network, I need to add the scope-id to the IPv6 address. For some reason, using the scope-id doesn't allow an authentication cookie to be created, and the website keeps going back to the login page. Anyone using IE7+ to access an ASP.NET website on a network using IPv6 with an encoded %?

  Hi, I have a sony vaio laptop(VGN-FW31J) running windows Vista Home Premium . I've had it over a year and file upload in a browser has never worked on any website in any browser(IE, Firefox, Chrome). I can select a file and the upload starts running but I always get a timeout. Sometimes it has worked once out of many attempts but only if the file is very small( < 50k). FTP does work. I've tried the following: Disabling anti virus Disabling firewall Can anyone help me here? i'm wondering if this is a vista problem or a vaio problem. Cheers

• Solaris 11 installed, no updates?

  I was messing around with solaris and decided to give Solaris 11 a try so I downloaded it from the Oracle website. After installing the OS, I went into the package manager and did an update. It told me that there were to available updates! I find this hard to believe considering that it's running a vulnerable version of firefox and java, its own in-house software product! Many of the other software products that came with the default install are also out of date and vulnerable. Is this normal for an Oracle install, or did I do something wrong with the upgrade process? I typed "pkg update" at the prompt, and I noticed that it did call out to pkg.oracle.com looking for updates. I find it bizarre that there are no updates available for an OS that was released a couple months ago with vulnerable software...

  Hi guys, i am using XP SP2, and everything where working fine. Somehow i can go to some web pages, but i cant login to them, for example www.buzzerbeater.com, i cant access my hotmail/msn, outlook doesnt work either, also www.realgm.com, i cant access the forums too. I have tried with IE7/Firefox/Chrome, but same result. I was using avast free edition that i removed, and i dont have any other security software installed. My laptop from the same network works perfectly. Any ideas?

• How can I import a CSV file into an SQLite table that doesn't allow null values?

  I've been using the SQLite Manager extension for Firefox to edit my Chrome web data file in order to restore my keyword searches, and I think I have everything in place except that when I import a CSV file into a table, (a) it won't import into the actual table because the table doesn't allow null values (b) if I import it into a new table that does allow null values, then all the empty strings end up as null and I have to manually edit the row, type and delete a character, and then it's set to empty string and it's fine So: is there either a way to import the CSV so that empty cells are automatically turned into empty strings instead of null, OR is there a way once a table is imported that has null values to convert it into one that doesn't allow null values, where each formerly null value is the empty string? • Ubuntu in Virtualbox - web server very slow when using local IP address

  I'm using Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx) to learn Ruby On Rails. I'm running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (the host is Windows 7 Ultimate), using bridged networking. When I run my Rails app and point the browser at it using localhost:3000, the app responds immediately and my page is rendered in a second or two. However, if I use 10.0.0.5:3000 (where 10.0.0.5 is my IP address reported using ifconfig), the response from my rails app is incredibly slow - maybe 30 seconds or more for the server to respond and render the page. This happens in both Firefox and Chrome. Also, when I hit the Rails app from the host (to test it in IE), I get the same slooooooow response. Any ideas what might be going on? I've tried it with two different routers, and on two different networks (work and home) with the same result. Cheers all.

  I am looking for a tool, which helps me to organize my personal bookmarks. I want to be able to assign tags and free comments to a bookmark. I want to search my bookmarks by tags date of bookmarking pattern in title pattern in url It would be nice to be web based to enable sharing my bookmarks between different machines. But for it would be OK, if it works on a single machine as long as it has some import/export way to transfer the links to a new machine replacing the old. As browsers I'm using Firefox and ChromePlus. It would be nice, if the solution works with both browsers. With free comments, I mean additional remarks stored for a bookmark, which is not essential for searching.

• How can I prevent Apache from exposing a user's password?

  When using basic authentication (specifically via LDAP, but htpasswd also) with Apache, it makes the REMOTE_USER variable available to the PHP / Ruby / Python code underneath -- this is very useful for offloading authentication to the webserver. In our office environment we have lots of internal applications working like this over SSL, all quite secure. BUT: Apache exposes the PHP_AUTH_USER (=REMOTE_USER) and PHP_AUTH_PW variables to any application inside PHP. (PHP_AUTH_PW contains the plaintext password the user entered.) This means it's possible for the app to harvest usernames and passwords. Presumably the same information is available to Python and Ruby (all three are currently in use; PHP is being phased out). So how can I prevent Apache from doing this? One idea is to use Kerberos Negotiate authentication (which does not expose the password and has the benefit of being SSO), but that automatically falls back to Basic for some browsers (Chrome and in some cases Firefox), causing the password to be exposed again.

  Browsers like Chrome and Firefox can use my wifi device to get information about the surrounded APs and pin point my physical location using Google Location Services, I know these browser always ask for permissions to do this, and that these features can also be "turned off". But I was wondering if there's a better way to prevent ANY application to access this information from my wifi device. I don't like anyone on the internet knowing where I live, and I am worried some software could do the same as these browsers but without asking for permissions. I am using Ubuntu 10.04.

  I have updated to Windows 8 and got Internet Explorer 10, but I don't get the full screen mode, is just like another desktop app. All links on the Windows Store Apps (Bing, News...) redirect to the old desktop and open my default browser (chrome). I have set IE as default browser but that not solve the problem. I have been looking on the IE10 options but I don't see this option. How can I solve this? • Get lots of javascript problems when using Opera 11.00 to surf

  Sites like ebay and even superuser stop working properly when I use opera 11.00. Menus stop working everywhere from ebay to godaddy. Hovering on a menu item doesn't expand it, no sub menu slides out. This makes a large number of very popular websites unusable. Am I right in assuming this is a javascript issue? I use opera for the turbo feature (I have tested opera with and without turbo so it's not turbo's fault) because I'm on mobile broadband until I get my phone line sorted out. Turbo helps me save money, as well as allowing me to surf at a sane speed. Is there a firefox or chrome equivalent to opera turbo that doesn't cost money? I'm using Opera 11.00, build 1156.

• Windows Server 2008 freezes when I run programs as administrator

  I am working on a machine running Windows Server 2008. Every program I have tried to run (firefox, notepad, wordpad) works fine, but if I right-click on any item on the desktop or the start menu and select "Run as Administrator" it freezes. I can move the mouse around and open/close the start menu, but the items in the start menu do not change color when the mouse hovers over them. I googled for answers for some time but had no luck. Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? (Update: I forgot to mention that the machine is virtual and I am using VMWare Workstation. In order to answer the questions below, I have been going to the same snapshot of the system each time. This lets me start the system in the exact same place each time in order to answer your questions and test.) (Update: When I run any process as administrator and it freezes, I can start task manager, but I cannot see the new process (notepad, etc...) )

• Is a memory upgrade a viable option to fix performance issues? [closed]

  I'm currently seeing my PC getting bogged down by Firefox 11.0 alone with only one hundred tabs open. Resulting in a memory use of over 530M , VM size of over 800M and an insane amount of page faults (easily reaching 100 million over the course of the day). The PF delta during normal operation easily reaches 7k with peaks to 15k sometimes reaching over 20k. This leads to a (real) deterioration to response time when switching, opening and closing tabs, opening menus, typing, ... My question is: Am I right in assuming that plugging in more RAM (either adding 2x1GB or replacing the existing RAM with 2x2GB or 4x1GB) will solve this problem? My specs: Windows XP Home Edition SP3 (32 bit) Intel Core Duo 2,4 GHz 2x512MB RAM 800MHz DDR2 (dual channel) 4MB unified cache 320GB HDD Intel G33 (X3100) onboard graphics (no graphics card but PCI express x16 slot is available)

• Which browser is the most secure? (research and practically based)

  I was wondering which browser is the most secure today, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Safari on a Windows machine with the user running as a Power User/Administrator account. This is not a question about which browser is the best because its the most usable, but more of a question if asked for security, which browser is the most secure given an everyday user's experience (JavaScript, Flash, Ads, etc). Also, would the choice for most secure change if the user was running as a restricted user? To clarify, I'm looking for an answer that's based in research on potential and common exploits and how long it takes for critical problems to be patched.

• Fedora 16 Running Hot

  Since switching from Windows 7 to Fedora 16, my laptop has been running incredibly hot (by the air exhaust). The laptop is an Asus K73S. Running 'sensors', I receive: acpitz-virtual-0: 75.0 celsius nouveau-pci-0100: 66.0 celsius asus-isa-0000: 75.0 celsius The only CPU hog is Firefox at 30 - 40% on average. My GPU information (from lspci) is: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Process or Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09). Running lspci | grep -i VGA, returns: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3] (rev a1) I don't notice a huge difference running without the battery, but it does seem a little cooler.   I have had issues with java on my computer for a while. First of all, java has never worked on Google Chrome or Firefox, Only IE. Whenever I need to use Java, I use IE. Now, I just tried to play minecraft the other week and I receive the error "fatal error (1)" and get a black screen (this is on the online free version). Now, I searched for java and found that I have Java 32 bit. I cannot uninstall it on Revo uninstaller or Windows uninstaller. What should I do?

  I have a windows 8 hp dual booting ubuntu. When i log onto windows i cant get on the internet... But skype and other applications can just now webpages in a browser what so ever (this is on windows 8). But on ubuntu i have no internet issues at all. From what i see right now its only the browsers in windows 8 that cant get the internet, and ive tried all the browsers i had (chrome, ie, firefox) and they cant connect but in the win8 notification area it says im connected. I can even ping via cmd. HELP! Thanks. Whats not working is that i cant get access the internet through the windows 8 broswer.
