• A .NET Developers day with the iPad.

  The Apple iPad is currently getting a lot of buzz because of the app store, the book store and of course iTunes. I had the chance to play with one and this is what I have learned about the device. Let’s get this out of the way first, the iPad is awesome. It is the device for media consumption and casual web browsing. But how does it measure up to those of us with .NET on our brains all days. Let’s find out… Main Screen – you can customize everything on this page. I guess I should replace that image with a C# or VS logo. Its pretty standard stuff if you have an iPhone.   Programming Books If you have a subscription to Safari Books Online, then you are in luck, its very easy to read the books on the iPad. Just fire up Safari web browser and goto the Safari Books Online. The biggest benefit that I can see with the iPad is the ability to read books wherever and not have to worry about purchasing books that I already have the .PDF for. Below is a sample from Code Complete 2nd Edition. Below is a PDF of the ECMA-334 C# Language Specification. As you can see its very readable and you should have no problem reading actual code.   Example of Code shown below: It is however easier to read the PDF and store them with a 3rd party PDF reader. I have seen several for .99 cents or less. You can however switch the screen to vertical to get more viewing space as shown below: I was disappointed with the iBooks application. I could not find a single .NET programming book anywhere. I was able to download the excellent sci-fi book “A memory of Wind” for free though. If I just overlooked them, then please email me with the names and titles. I couldn’t even find a technology category in the categories list. Web Surfing – Technical Sites Below is an example of my site in Safari. The code is very readable and the experience was identical to viewing it in Firefox. I tried multiple programming site and the pages looked great except those that used flash and of course it did not display on those pages.   News Apps - Technical Content The standard NY Times and USA Today looked great, but the Technical Content was lacking. It would probably be better to use Google Reader for online technical news.     YouTube Videos – Technical Content  Since its YouTube, we already know that a lot of technical content exist and it plays great on the iPad. I watched several programming videos and could clearly see the code being written. Taking Technical Notes The iPad comes with a great notepad for taking notes. I found that it was easy to take notes regarding projects that I am currently working on.   Calendar The calendar that ships with the iPad is great for organizing. You can setup exchange server or manually enter the information. Pretty standard stuff.    Random Applications that I like: TweetDeck.   and Adobe Ideas. Adobe Ideas is kinda like SketchFlow except you use your finger to mock up the sketches.  Don’t forget that the iPad is great for any type of podcasting. That pretty much sums it up, I would definitely recommend this device as it will only get better. I believe the iOS4 comes out on the 24th and the iPad will only get more and more apps. You could save a few bucks by waiting for the 2nd generation, but that’s a call that only you can make.

• Ops Center 12c - Update - Provisioning Solaris on x86 Using a Card-Based NIC

  Last week, I posted a blog describing how to use Ops Center to provision Solaris over the network via a NIC on a card rather than the built-in NIC.  Really, that was all about how to install Solaris on a SPARC system.  This week, we'll look at how to do the same thing for an x86-based server. Really, the overall process is exactly the same, at least for Solaris 11, with only minor updates. We will focus on Solaris 11 for this blog.  Once I verify that the same approach works for Solaris 10, I will provide another update. Booting Solaris 11 on x86 Just as before, in order to configure the server for network boot across a card-based NIC, it is necessary to declare the asset to associate the additional MACs with the server.  You likely will need to access the server console via the ILOM to figure out the MAC and to get a good idea of the network instance number.  The simplest way to find both of these is to start a network boot using the desired NIC and see where it appears in the list of network interfaces and what MAC is used when it tries to boot.  Go to the ILOM for the server.  Reset the server and start the console.  When the BIOS loads, select the boot menu, usually with Ctrl-P.  This will give you a menu of devices to boot from, including all of the NICs.  Select the NIC you want to boot from.  Its position in the list is a good indication of what network number Solaris will give the device. In this case, we want to boot from the 5th interface (GB_4, net4).  Pick it and start the boot processes.  When it starts to boot, you will see the MAC address for the interface Once you have the network instance and the MAC, go through the same process of declaring the asset as in the SPARC case.  This associates the additional network interface with the server.. Creating an OS Provisioning Plan The simplest way to do the boot via an alternate interface on an x86 system is to do a manual boot.  Update the OS provisioning profile as in the SPARC case to reflect the fact that we are booting from a different interface.  Update, in this case, the network boot device to be GB_4/net4, or the device corresponding to your network instance number.  Configure the profile to support manual network boot by checking the box for manual boot in the OS Provisioning profile. Booting the System Once you have created a profile and plan to support booting from the additional NIC, we are ready to install the server. Again, from the ILOM, reset the system and start the console.  When the BIOS loads, select boot from the Boot Menu as above.  Select the network interface from the list as before and start the boot process.  When the grub bootloader loads, the default boot image is the Solaris Text Installer.  On the grub menu, select Automated Installer and Ops Center takes over from there. Lessons The key lesson from all of this is that Ops Center is a valuable tool for provisioning servers whether they are connected via built-in network interfaces or via high-speed NICs on cards.  This is great news for modern datacenters using converged network infrastructures.  The process works for both SPARC and x86 Solaris installations.  And it's easy and repeatable.

• Memory is full with vertex buffer

  I'm having a pretty strange problem that I didn't think I'd run into. I was able to store a 50x50 grid in one vertex buffer finally, in hopes of better performance. Before I had each cube have an individual vertex buffer and with 4 50x50 grids, this slowed down my game tremendously. But it still ran. With 4 50x50 grids with my new code, that's only 4 vertex buffers. With the 4 vertex buffers, I get a memory error. When I load the game with 1 grid, it takes forever to load and with my previous version, it started up right away. The array I'm reading from is a byte array which defines the coordinates of my map. Now with my old version, I used the same loading from an array so that hasn't changed. The only difference is the one vertex buffer instead of 2500 for a 50x50 grid. cubes is just a normal list that holds all my cubes for the vertex buffer. Another thing that just came to mind would be my draw calls. If I'm setting an effect for each cube in my cube list, that's probably going to take a lot of memory. How can I avoid doing this? • Why is the framerate (fps) capped at 60?

  ISSUE I recently moved a project from my laptop to my desktop(machine info below). On my laptop the exact same code displays the fps(and ms/f) correctly. On my desktop it does not. What I mean by this is on the laptop it will display 300 fps(for example) where on my desktop it will show only up to 60. If I add 100 objects to the game on the laptop I'll see my frame rate drop accordingly; the same test on the desktop results in no change and the frames stay at 60. It takes a lot(~300) entities before I'll see a frame drop on the desktop, then it will descend. It seems as though its "theoretical" frames would be 400 or 500 but will never actually get to that and only do 60 until there's too much to handle at 60. This 60 frame cap is coming from no where. I'm not doing any frame limiting myself. It seems like something external is limiting my loop iterations on the desktop, but for the last couple days I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how to debug this. SETUPS Desktop: Visual Studio Express 2012 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Laptop: Visual Studio Express 2010 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit The libraries(allegro, box2d) are the same versions on both setups. Where I'm at My understanding of al_get_time() is that it can return different resolutions depending on the system. However the resolution is never worse than seconds, and the double is represented as [seconds].[finer-resolution] and seeing as I'm only checking for a whole second al_get_time() shouldn't be responsible. My project settings and compiler options are the same. And I promise its the same code on both machines. My googling really didn't help me much, and although technically it's not that big of a deal. I'd really like to figure this out or perhaps have it explained, whichever comes first. Even just an idea of how to go about figuring out possible causes, because I'm out of ideas. • Why does my laptop resume immediately after suspend?

  I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after. What could cause such a behaviour? I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 with the 3.2.0-25 kernel on a HP dv5-1178er Pavilion laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo). • Responsive Design for your ADF Faces Web Applications

  Responsive web applications are a common pattern for designing web pages that adjust their UI based on the device that access them. With the increase in the number of ADF applications that are being accessed from mobile phones and tablet we are getting more and more questions around this topic. Steven Davelaar wrote a comprehensive article covering key concepts in this area that you can find here. The article focuses on what I would refer to as server adaptive application, where the server adapts the UI it generates based on the device that is accessing the server. However there is one more technique that is not covered in that article and can be used with Oracle ADF - it is CSS manipulation on the client that can achieve responsive design. I'll cover this technique in this blog entry. The main advantage of this technique is that the UI manipulation does not require the server to send over a new UI when a change is needed. This for example allows your page to change immediately when you change the orientation of your device. (By the way this example was developed for one of the seminars in the upcoming Oracle ADF OTN Virtual Developer Day). In the demo that you'll see below you'll see a single page that changes the way it is displayed based on the orientation of the device. Here is the page with the tablet in landscape and portrait: To achieve this I'm using a CSS media query in my page template that changes the display property of a couple of style classes that are used in my page. • LoaderLock was detected, and turning off the warning does not help

  I am trying to write an application that takes in sound from the default audio recording device on a computer. When running any code that accesses DirectX from my managed code i get this error: DLL 'C:\Windows\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound\1.0.2902.0__31bf3856ad364e35\Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.dll' is attempting managed execution inside OS Loader lock. Do not attempt to run managed code inside a DllMain or image initialization function since doing so can cause the application to hang. DevicesCollection coll = new DevicesCollection(); and Device d = new Device(DSoundHelper.DefaultCaptureDevice); and Capture c = new Capture(DSoundHelper.DefaultCaptureDevice); all cause the LoaderLock MDA to pop up and tell me there is a problem. I have scoured the internet (stackoverflow included) for solutions to this problem, but most people just say to turn off the warning, which does not work. When I turn off the warning, a generic ApplicationException is thrown, which is even less useful. I have seen the answers to this question as well, which didn't help because he said to remove the code that is causing the error. Others have said "fix your code." My questions are: how can I call any (preferably managed) DirectX code from C# without getting this error?

  Hi, I am facing a problem where-in I cannot select videos from the photo album in iPhone 2G/3G device. The default photos application does show videos and is capable of playing them, which in turn means that UIImagePickerController should clearly be capable of showing videos in photo album and selecting them. I havent tested for 3GS, but I am sure that this problem does not exist in it with reference to other threads. I have built the app for both 3.0 (base SDK) and 3.1 but with the same results. I expect this particular info would come from the USB device its self. Can any one show me how to do that. By the way in my version of windows XP I’m using the registry path, I cannot find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\HID...\Class I do not even get HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\ I think this is because I have not executed the SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces Function Why? • Forcing UIInterfaceOrientation changes on iPhone

  I'm strugging with getting an iPhone application which requires just about every push or pop in the Nav Controller Stack to change orientation. Basically the first view is portrait, the second landscape the third portrait again (Yes I know this is less than ideal, but that's the design and I've got to implement it). Setting to link against 3.1.2 my reading of the linked articles above seems to indicate that if my portrait view pushes a view with - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { // Return YES for supported orientations return ((interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight) ); } Then then that view should appear rotated to landscape. What happens is it appears in its "broken" portrait form, then rotates correctly as the device is turned. If I pop the controller back to my portrait view (which has an appropriate shouldAutoRotate...) then that remains in broken landscape view until the device is returned to portrait orientation. I've also tried removing all the shouldautorotate messages, and instead forcing rotation by transforming the view. This kind of works, and I've figured out that by moving the status bar (which is actually hidden in my application) [UIApplication sharedApplication].statusBarOrientation = UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight; the keyboard will appear with the correct orientation when desired. The problem with this approach is that the status bar transform is weird and ugly when you don't have a status bar - a shadow looms over the page with each change. So. What am I missing. 1) Am I wrong in thinking that in 3.1.2 (or possibly earlier) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation should provide the desired orientation simply by pushing controllers ? 2) Is there another way of getting keyboards to appear in the correct orientation. 3) Are the undocumented API calls the way to go (please no!)

  I am just learning ASP.NET c# and trying to incorporate best practices into my applications. Everything that I read says to layer my applications into DAL, BLL, UI, etc based on separation of concerns. Instead of passing datatables around, I am thinking about using custom objects so that I am loosely coupled to my data layer and can take advantage of intellisense in VS. I assume these objects would be considered DTOs? First, where do these objects reside in my layers? BLL, DAL, other? Second, when populating from SQL, should I loop through a data reader to populate the list or first fill a data table, then loop through the table to populate the list? I know you should close the database connection as soon as possible, but it seems like even more overhead to populate the data table and then loop through that for the list. Third, everything I see these days says use Linq2SQL. I am planning to learn Linq2SQL, but at this time I am working with a legacy database that doesn't have foreign keys setup and I do not have the ability to fix it atm. Also, I want to learn more about c# before I start getting into ORM solutions like nHibernate. At the same time I don't want to type out all the connection and SQL plumbing for every query. Is it ok to use the Enterprise DAAB for now?

  I need to fill a byte[] with a single non-zero value. How can I do this in C# without looping through each byte in the array? Update: The comments seem to have split this into two questions - Is there a Framework method to fill a byte[] that might be akin to memset What is the most efficient way to do it when we are dealing with a very large array? I totally agree that using a simple loop works just fine, as Eric and others have pointed out. The point of the question was to see if I could learn something new about C# :) I think Juliet's method for a Parallel operation should be even faster than a simple loop. • Google Maps v3: Enforcing min. zoom level when using fitBounds

  I'm drawing a series of markers on a map (using v3 of the maps api). In v2, I had the following code: bounds = new GLatLngBounds(); ... loop thru and put markers on map ... bounds.extend(point); ... end looping map.setCenter(bounds.getCenter()); var level = map.getBoundsZoomLevel(bounds); if ( level == 1 ) level = 5; map.setZoom(level > 6 ? 6 : level); And that work fine to ensure that there was always an appropriate level of detail displayed on the map. I'm trying to duplicate this functionality in v3, but the setZoom and fitBounds don't seem to be cooperating: ... loop thru and put markers on the map var ll = new google.maps.LatLng(p.lat,p.lng); bounds.extend(ll); ... end loop var zoom = map.getZoom(); map.setZoom(zoom > 6 ? 6 : zoom); map.fitBounds(bounds); I've tried different permutation (moving the fitBounds before the setZoom, for example) but nothing I do with setZoom seems to affect the map. Am I missing something? Is there a way to do this?

• Hive Based Registry in Flash

  To start with I'll say I've read the post here and I'm still having trouble. I'm trying to create a CE6 image with a hive-based registry that actually stores results through a reboot. I've ticked the hive settings in the catalog items. In common.reg, I've set the location of the hive ([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init\BootVars] "SystemHive") to "Hard Drive\Registry" (Note: the flash shows up as a device called "Hard Drive") In common.reg, I've set "Flags"=dword:3 in the same place to get the device manager loaded along with the storage manager I've verified that these settings are wrapped in "; HIVE BOOT SECTION" This is where it starts to fall over. It all compiles fine, but on the target system, when it boots, I get: A directory, called "Hard Disk" where a registry is put A device, name called "Hard Disk2" where the permanent flash is Any changes made to the registry are lost on a reboot What am I still missing? Why is the registry not being stored on the flash? Strangly, if I create a random file/directory in the registry directory, it is still there after a reboot, so even though this directory isn't on the other partition (where I tried to put it), it does appear to be permanent. If it is permanent, why don't registry settings save (ie Ethernet adapter IP addresses?) I'm not using any specific profiles, so I'm at a loss as to what the last step is to make this hive registry a permanent store.

• JavaScript - Settting property on Object in Image load function, property not set once outside funct

  Sometimes JavaScript doesn't make sense to me, consider the following code that generates a photo mosaic based on x/y tiles. And I can ensure you that this function DOES get called because I've placed an alert() call inside it. Right now it's just stuck inside an infinite loop calling tryDisplayMosaic() constantly. Also if I place a loop just before tryDisplayMosaic() is called, and in that loop I set .Done = true, then .Done property is true and alert('All images downloaded'); will get called.

• WCF Named Pipe IPC

  I have been trying to get up to speed on Named Pipes this week. The task I am trying to solve with them is that I have an existing windows service that is acting as a device driver that funnels data from an external device into a database. Now I have to modify this service and add an optional user front end (on the same machine, using a form of IPC) that can monitor the data as it passes between the device and the DB as well as send some commands back to the service. My initial ideas for the IPC were either named pipes or memory mapped files. So far I have been working through the named pipe idea using WCF Tutorial Basic Interprocess Communication . My idea is to set the Windows service up with an additional thread that implements the WCF NamedPipe Service and use that as a conduit to the internals of my driver. I have the sample code working, however I can not get my head around 2 issues that I am hoping that someone here can help me with: In the tutorial the ServiceHost is instantiated with a typeof(StringReverser) rather than by referencing a concrete class. Thus there seems to be no mechanism for the Server to interact with the service itself (between the host.Open() and host.Close() lines). Is it possible to create a link between and pass information between the server and the class that actually implements the service? If so, how? If I run a single instance of the server and then run multiple instance of the clients, it seems that each client gets a separate instance of the service class. I tried adding some state information to the class implementing the service and it was only retained within the instance of the named pipe. This is possibly related to the first question, but is there anyway to force the named pipes to use the same instance of the class that is implementing the service? Finally, any thoughts on MMF vs Named Pipes? Thanks for you help

• Developing a GPS car tracking system in C#

  I'm in the brainstorming phase to develop a GPS car tracking system requested by a customer. I myself know the directions to build some GPS system to mobile phones and etc. But sincerely I don't know how to start in that project. That is the scenario: 1) The cars will get a device with a SIM CARD that will emit GPS signals. 2) My customer will in any place (home, work, etc) with a web connection will see in the map where the car is located. For me, I have not problems at get the GPS data, convert to usable info and show the position in some map system (like Google Maps or MS Bing Maps, by example). My problem is, how I do to retrieve that "GPS Signal" from device in the car? I will need some kind of "Receiver Device" connected to a web server machine in order to my application to consume that data? Or "automagically" my sodtware will receive the info from a third-party web-service? Or what? I thank for any help!

• compiling iphone program in snow leopard wtih libsqlite3 library

  Hi, I develop an iphone application which uses sqlite3 as a database. That time my OS X version was leopard. So add added libsqlite3.0.dylib to frameworks and compile without any problems it complied and with any problems I could run it on the device as well. This week I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac. Removing old Leopard version and install a fresh Snow leopard system. But my problem is now I cannot compile that program because it will give errors with sqlite3 library. I added sqlite3.0.dylib using selecting targets and then selecting file. Also tried adding selecting it from directly /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib I get two different errors when I compiled to device and to simulator when compiled to device, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file is not of required architecture* When compiled to simulator, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file was built for unsupported file format which is not the architecture being linked (i386) ld: warning: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libSystem.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file ld: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file Command /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 i also tried with adding sqlite3.dylib (, I think sqlite3.0.dylib is linked to sqlite3.dylib.) but no luck. • Fastest image iteration in Python

  I am creating a simple green screen app with Python 2.7.4 but am getting quite slow results. I am currently using PIL 1.1.7 to load and iterate the images and saw huge speed-ups changing from the old getpixel() to the newer load() and pixel access object indexing. I have seen similar, simpler examples where the loop is replaced by a boolean matrix for instance, but for this case I can't see a way to replace the loop. The pixels[x,y] assignment seems to take the most amount of time but not knowing Python very well I am unsure of a more efficient way to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

• Create a virtual serial port for widcomm stack under 32feet

  Hi, all Currently I am doing a project involves a bluetooth communication setup between a PDA and a small embedded device. This small embedded device can only be communicated with a virtual serial port over a bluetooth link. The PDA is the ipaq running with windows mobile 6, and I am using c#. I had done a program which can communication with the serial port over bluetooth. But the only issue is every time I run this program, I have to active the bluetooth radio, and manually pairing this device with the pda via the bluetooth manager. What I want to do is when running this program, it can establish the bluetooth connection between the pda and the embedded module. So I am using functions from the 32feet prject. This is one issue is I cant make the virutal serial port part, as I think the 32feet project can only make virual serial ports for the window bluetooth stack but not the widcomm bluetooth stact, which the ipaq is using. Therefore, are there any existing c# classes or stacks that can make virtual serial port under widcomm for windows mobile 6. Thanks

• identation control while developing a small python like language

  Hello, Im developing a small python like language using flex, byacc (for lexical and parsing) and C++, but i have a few questions regarding scope control. just as python it uses white spaces (or tabs) for identation, not only that but i want to implement index breaking like for instance if you type "break 2" inside a while loop thats inside another while loop it would not only break from the last one but from the first loop as well (hence the number 2 after break) and so on. example: while 1 while 1 break 2 end end #after break 2 it would jump right here but since i dont have an "anti" tab character to check when a scope ends (like C for example i would just use the '}' char) i was wondering if this method would the the best: i would define a global variable, like "int tabIndex" on my yacc file that i would access in my lex file using extern. then everytime i find a tab character on my lex file i would increment that variable by 1. when parsing on my yacc file if i find a "break" keyword i would decrement by the amount typed after it from the tabIndex variable, and when i reach and EOF after compiling and i get a tabIndex != 0 i would output compilation error. now the problem is, whats the best way to see if the identation got reduced, should i read \b (backspace) chars from lex and then reduce the tabIndex variable (when the user doesnt use break)? another method to achieve this? also just another small question, i want every executable to have its starting point on the function called start() should i hardcode this onto my yacc file? sorry for the long question any help is greatly appretiated. also if someone can provide an yacc file for python would be nice as a guideline (tried looking on google and had no luck). thanks in advance.
