• Review before or after code commit, which is better?

  Traditionally we performed code review before commit, I had an argument with my colleague today, who preferred code review after commit. First, here's some background, we got some experienced developers and we also got new hires with almost zero programming practice. we'd like to perform fast and short iterations to release our product. we all team members locate at same site. The advantages of code review before commit I've learned, mentor new hires try to prevent errors, failures, bad designs in early developing cycle learn from others knowledge backup if someone quits But I also got some bad experience, like low efficiency, some changes may be reviewed over days hard to balance speed and quality, especially for newbies some guy felt distrust As to post-review, I just knew little about this, but the most thing I worried about is the risk of losing control, people never review. Any opinions?

• Is extending a singleton class wrong?

  I am creating a logger for an application. I am using a third party logger library. In which logger is implemented as singleton. I extended that logger class because I want to add some more static functions. In these static functions I internally use the instance (which is single) of Logger(which i inherited). I neither creates instance of MyLogger nor re-implemented the getInstance() method of super class. But I am still getting warnings like destructor of MyLogger can not be created as parent class (Loggger) destructor is not accessible. I want to know, I am I doing something wrong? Inheriting the singleton is wrong or should be avoided??

  Hello, I found the following graph libraries, but I am not sure which one I should use. Maybe there are some more... Graphviz (http://www.graphviz.org/) Boost Graph Library (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_42_0/libs/graph/doc/index.html) Lemon (http://lemon.cs.elte.hu/trac/lemon) igraph (http://igraph.sourceforge.net/introduction.html) What it should do: draw a undirected network map come as header only or static lib for Windows the output format should be user editable Graphviz is the only one I tried so far, but I found no static lib for it, I failed to build it by my own and the documentation could be better. • Properties are making trouble

  In my application I have added a Properties.cs file which contains properties that I am would use through out the application. I am getting NullReferenceException = Object reference not set to an instance of an object. • Coherence Query Performance in Large Clusters

  Large clusters (measured in terms of the number of storage-enabled members participating in the largest cache services) may introduce challenges when issuing queries. There is no particular cluster size threshold for this, rather a gradually increasing tendency for issues to arise. The most obvious challenges are that a client's perceived query latency will be determined by the slowest responder (more likely to be a factor in larger clusters) as well as the fact that adding additional cache servers will not increase query throughput if the query processing is not compute-bound (which would generally be the case for most indexed queries). If the data set can take advantage of the partition affinity features of Coherence, then the application can use a PartitionedFilter to target a query to a single server (using partition affinity to ensure that all data is in a single partition). If this can not be done, then avoiding an excessive number of cache server JVMs will help, as will ensuring that each cache server has sufficient CPU resources available and is also properly configured to minimize GC pauses (the most common cause of a slow-responding cache server).

• Why do some open-source projects NOT have a public issue tracker?

  Why do some open source projects not allow to report issues in a public issue tracker? Those projects require the issues to be reported via email, and the issues may be forwarded to people in a mailing list. Users may repeatedly report the same issue if there is no public issue tracker, as they have no easy way to know what has been reported before. The project team members need to spend extra time answering those repeated issues. Some projects do have a public issue tracker but the issues are still reported through email and they are posted by the project team only after filtering. It does not allow anyone to report directly in issue tracker (example: SVN). Such arrangement is not transparent nor open, which I think violates the philosophy of open source. And it is outdated.

• Designing constructors around type erasure in Java

  Yesterday, I was designing a Java class which I wanted to be initalized with Lists of various generic types: TheClass(List<String> list) { ... } TheClass(List<OtherType> list) { ... } This will not compile, as the constructors have the same erasure. I just went with factory methods differentiated by their names instead: public static TheClass createWithStrings(List<String> list) public static TheClass createWithOtherTypes(List<OtherType> list) This is less than optimal, as there isn't a single obvious location where all the different options for creating instances are available. I tried to search for better design ideas, but found surprisingly few results. What other patterns exist for designing around this problem?

• BUILD 2013 &ndash; Summary

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/06/28/build-2013-ndash-summary.aspx BUILD was a wonderful experience.  It was great to see old friends, make new friends, learn about the latest Microsoft technology and party with a bunch of geeks.  It didn't hurt getting some awesome swag. While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • How to test reliability of my own (small) embedded operating system ?

I added some automated unit test with a high test code coverage (95%), but the scope is only the static part. I got some code metrics as complexity and readability. I'm testing my code with a rule checker with MiSRA support, and of course fixed all warnings. I'm testing the code with a static analyzer and again fixed all warnings. What can I do now to test - and improve - the reliability of my OS ? How about the dynamic part ?

• Why do I get CA1811 when I call a private method from a public method in C++/CLI?

  I've recently upgraded my project from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. By enabling Code Analysis and building on Release, I'm getting warning CA1811: Avoid uncalled private code. I've managed to reduce the code to this: .h file: public ref class Foo { public: virtual System::String^ ToString() override; private: static System::String^ Bar(); }; .cpp file: String^ Foo::ToString() { return Bar(); } String^ Foo::Bar() { return "abc"; } The warning I get: CA1811 : Microsoft.Performance : 'Foo::Bar(void)' appears to have no upstream public or protected callers. It doesn't matter if Bar() is static or not. I've tried to reproduce it in C# but I can't. I can only reproduce it in C++/CLI. Why do I get this warning? Is this a Visual Studio 2010 bug?

• How can I require an attribute on a class definition?

  Is there a way to enforce a compile requirement for certain attributes on a class or interface implementation? For example, let's say my application uses a series of static classes that contain const int resource values. I'd like to decorate the class in a Description attribute to describe its contents. In concept, I'd like to apply this attribute requirement to an interface, then each static class would implement it with its required Description. I could write a run-time check or a unit test to check compliance. But really a compile-time check would be best. Is there such a thing?

• Problem in suspending 2 threads at the same time in MFC!

  I am learning about threading and multithreading..so i just created a small application in which i will update the progressbar and a static text using threading.I vl get two inputs from the user, start and end values for how long the loop should rotate.I have 2threads in my application. Thread1- to update the progressbar(according to the loop) the static text which will show the count(loop count). Thread2 - to update the another static text which will just diplay a name Basically if the user clicks start, the progressbar steps up and at the same time filecount and the name are displayed parallely. There's is another operation where if the user clicks pause it(thread) has to suspend until the user clicks resume. The problem is,the above will not work(will not suspend and resume) for both thread..but works for a singlw thread. I am working with a team to select a new content management system for a large membership organization (around 25,000 members). The organization has revenue so I'm not looking for a dirt cheap solution. The site currently uses ASI iMIS which is based on ColdFusion. It's difficult to work with and not flexible for our needs. What other possible alternatives to ASI iMIS are there? Ideally the solution would have some sort of support from the vendor. • .NET SerialPort.Read skipps bytes

  Solution Reading the data byte wise via "port.ReadByte" is too slow, the problem is inside the SerialPort class. i changed it to reading bigger chunks via "port.Read" and there are now no buffer overruns. although i found the solution myself, writing it down helped me and maybe someone else has the same problem and finds this via google... (how can i mark it as answered?) EDIT 2 by setting port.ReadBufferSize = 2000000; i can delay the problem for ~30 seconds. so it seems, .Net really is too slow... since my application is not that critical, i just set the buffer to 20MB, but i am still interested in the cause. EDIT i just tested something i had not thought of before (shame on me): port.ErrorReceived += (object self, SerialErrorReceivedEventArgs se_arg) => { Console.Write("| Error: {0} | ", System.Enum.GetName(se_arg.EventType.GetType(), se_arg.EventType)); }; and it seems that i have an overrun. Is the .Net implementation too slow for 500k or is there an error on my side? Original Question i built a very primitive oszilloscope (avr, which sends adc data over uart to an ftdi chip). On the pc side i have a WPF Programm that displays this data. The Protokoll is: two sync bytes (0xaffe) - 14 data bytes - two sync bytes - 14 data bytes - ... i use 16bit values, so inside the 14 data bytes are 7 channels (lsb first). I verified the uC Firmware with hTerm, and it does send and receive everything correct. But, if i try to read the data with C#, sometimes some bytes are lost. The oszilloscop programm is a mess, but i created a small sample application, which has the same symptoms. I added two extension methods to a) read one byte from the COM Port and ignore -1 (EOF) and b) wait for the sync pattern. The sample programm first syncs onto the data stream by waiting for (0xaffe) and then compares the received bytes with the expected values. the loop runs a few times until an assert failed message pops up. I could not find anything about lost bytes via google, any help would be appreciated. • Is ICCP certification valuable for a programming career?

  In looking at various professional societies the AITP lead me indirectly to the ICCP Certified Computer Programmer certification (and others from the ICCP). I had never heard of this program, but both the AITP and, more significantly to me, ACM have members on the ICCP board. Is anyone familiar with this certification? The webpage isn't confidence inspiring to be honest, but looking at it the program seems aimed at those in the Fortune 1000 internal software world. Anyone ICCP certified in some way? Does it make a positive different for a career in software development?

• Queue access to the database to avoid multiple cache items

  I have a music related ASP.NET web site which caches a lot of static information from the database on the first request. Sometimes, the application is reset and cache is cleared while the application is on heavy load and then all http requests go to the database to retrieve that static data and cache it for other requests. How can I ensure that only one request go to the database and cache the results, so that other request simply read that info from cache and not needlessly retrieve the same info over and over again. Can I use thread locking? For example, can I do something like lock(this) { db access here }?

  I am trying to see if a directory exists based on an input field from the user. When the user types in the path, I want to check if the path actually exists. I have some c# code already.
