What is the most stable and currently accepted set of procedures/tools that I should look into when setting up my build/deploy dev (and later production) environment? What I mean is: Should I use ANT? Or has there been something better that has evolved? In what instances should I use Maven? What are some best practices to create a continuous integration/deployment environment? What are best practices for doing test-driven development? Anything else?

  • Transfer domains without disrupting local email server

    Perhaps I am thinking about this wrong, but maybe some of you guys can help me on this one. I have a client who currently has a domain from network solutions and is hosted via GoDaddy. Additionally, he his has email service with GoDaddy as well, but it seems to be forwarded to his local server at work. How can I transfer hosting accounts without disrupting email service (or at least temporarily)?   • Weird referral traffic [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Strange incoming links appearing on site statistics I'm getting weird traffic from Japan, from a site called ime.nu Why weird? because I'm not able to identify the link and also when going to their homepage link it just shows an Apache Test Page, while I'm seeing it is a pretty big site in analysis sites (Alexa Ranked 121 in JP) Can someone help me understand the mystery?

  • Stop bots from crawling old links with extensions

    I've recently switched to MVC3 which is extension-less for the URL's, but Google and Bing have a wealth of links that they are crawling which no longer exist. So I'm trying to find out if there is a way to format robots.txt (or by some other method) to tell google/bing that any link that ends in an extension isn't a valid link... Is this possible? On pages that I'm concerned about a User having saved as a fav I'm displaying a 404 page that lists the links to take once they are redirected to the new page (I decided to not just redirect them as I don't want to maintain these forever). For Google/Bing sake I do have the canonical tag in the header. User-agent: * Allow: / Disallow: /*.* EDIT: I just added the 3rd line (in text above) and it APPEARS to do what I'm wanting. Allow a path, but disallow a file. Can anyone confirm this?

  • Strategy for managing lots of pictures for a website

    I'm starting a new website that will (hopefully) have a lot of user generated pictures. I'm trying to figure out the best way to store and serve these pictures. The CMS I'm using (umbraco) has a media library that puts a folder on the server for each image. Inside of there you can have different sizes of that same image. That folder has an ID on it and the database has additional information for that image along with the ID of the folder. This works great for small sites, but what if the pictures get up to 10,000, 100,000 or 1,000,000? It seems like the lookup on the directory would take a long time to find the correct folder. I'm on windows 2008 if that makes a difference. I'm not so worried about load. I can load balance my server pretty easily and replicate the images across the servers. The nature of the site won't have a lot of users on it either, but it could have a lot of pics. Thanks. -Nate EDIT After some thought I think I'm going to create a directory for each user under a root image folder then have user's pictures under that. I would be pretty stoked if I had even 5,000 users, so that shouldn't be too bad of a linear lookup. If it does get slow I will break it down into folders like /media/a/adam/image123.png. If it ever gets really big I will expand the above method to build a bigger tree. That would take a LOT of content though.

  • Should I rely on externally-hosted services?

    I am wondering over the dangers / difficulties in using external services like Google Chart in my production state website. With external services I mean them that you can't download and host on your own server. (-) Potentially the Google service can be down when my site is up. (+) I don't have to develop those particular systems for new browser technologies, hopefully Google will do that for me. (-) Extra latency while my site fetch the data from the google servers. What else? Is it worth spending time and money to develop my own systems to be more in control of things?

The application would need to support the following: Easy setup in a low cost Shared or Cloud Host Give potential customers easy way to browse current inventory (cars on lot) with suggested prices Give dealership easy way to login and update inventory (cars on lot) and suggested prices Give potential customers easy way to send the dealership an inquiry about a specific vehicle on the lot with CAPTCHA style SPAM protection I prefer ASP.NET MVC and Microsoft SQL Server, but I might consider other technologies such as WebForms and LightSwitch (HTML5). I am reasonably comfortable with MVC and WebForms, but I really don't want to waste a bunch of time writing an application that might already exist. I did find a few interesting templates via Bing that seem to control CSS and Layout, but I'm not sure if they contain any business logic or if they would integrate well into an MVC App.

  • Best way to deal with a system without a user acceptance / testing phase

    Historically I've been able to get away with making small changes to an in-house helpdesk system riding on a LAMP stack and just making a backup prior to editing. This has no user acceptance / testing phase and I work on the live .php files directly. However now the requirement has arisen that will require a bit more coding done, and I'm obviously not particularly happy about making these changes without a framework to support me. What would the best way forward be? I could just make another backup I suppose.

    I've got a site that should max out a 575px on the iphone and wanted to know what the best method is for defaulting the viewport to this size. Currently I am using this meta tag: <meta name="viewport" content="width=575; user-scalable=no;"> This displays some odd behavior in that it loads fully zoomed out and then, once the page is loaded, zooms in to 575. What are the best methods to ensure that my site will surely display at 575px wide in mobile browsers?

  • Where should I redirect (removed) phishing pages

    I was unfortunately the victim of a PHP exploit. Looking through my webserver logs, people are still attempting to reach the URL used in the phish. I want to redirect them to a site that will educate these people on what phishing is. My question: Is there a (generic / vendor-neutral) phishing education website that you suggest I send them to with a 301 redirect? (I assume a 301 is the best option.)

  • Recommendations for managing DNS issues when hosting customer sites.

    I'm working at a company which primarily provides SaaS products but also will host some of our customers corporate websites. My question relates to recommendations for managing DNS for client's domain names. My objectives: Not restrict my ability to change the server's IP address such as might happen when I move my servers to a new host. Not have to contact the customer to change their domain's DNS if I need to change the server's IP address. Often times, customers lose this information or have to track down the one person with any knowledge of the domain settings. Map both .clientdomain.com and www.clientdomain.com to the proper IIS site. However, I'm running into a couple of common problems: Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company does not allow for CNAME records. Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company will not let me create a CNAME entry for .spiffydomain.com because the given hosting company has created a SOA record for that entry or simply requires that .spiffydomain.com be an A record. I believe one solution to #2 is to use a wildcard for a CNAME entry (i.e. *.spiffydomain.com). Is that correct? How do other folks that are hosting many customer's site manage change of DNS entries on their servers?

  • DNS records on website.. What are they for?

    Recently we had to get some ddos protection for our website because of the large attacks we were seeing after getting a bit of popularity. We handed over our domain and hosting information to our ddos protection provider. It worked perfectly but I have a question. On our DNS records we have the Host and Answer and Type. The Host has our domain name there. The answer is this: SOMETEXTXXXX.dv.googlehosted.com. And when i copy and paste it into my browser it gives me a 404 error. But our website still loads and functions as it should. I don't understand why it would need this? I asked them about this and they said it is a method for ddos protection and the other IPs are the reverse proxy (the other ips give a 404 error too). Can anyone expand on this more please. How does all this tie in together and make the internet browser know where to point the person with all these reverse proxies and stuff I don't understand. Thank you.     I'm thinking of developing a pluggable test and assessment module. This tool will be used especially for desktop application projects to report and log errors, bugs, missing features and suggestions from testers. The tool will be plugged to the application by putting a small icon to the application itself. When pressed the tool will be visible where user can create entries about the application. Is there already a tool like that? I am not speaking about UI testing btw. For example, this tool might have a form consisting of Page name Environment information Entry type (can be bug, feature request, suggestion) Message User Info (name, contact etc) Date I think such a tool can greatly help testers prepare reports. Developers can understand the issue better and track all the reports.

There are generally two approaches I've seen developers take in their workflow: -optimize for webkit then apply hacks for IE7-9, or -optimize for IE7-8 then apply newer features for IE9/webkit Basically starting at the front of technology and working toward the back, or starting at the back of technology and working toward the front. How do you do things? What advantages or disadvantage do you perceive in the different way of doing things wrt to developing cross-browser support?
