We recently left university and find ourselves either end up working for a firm which already has good procedures (TDD, automated testing, proper agile development, etc) or working for a firm which doesn't. I want to learn some of these vital skills and get a grip on what a complete start-to-finish development procedure would look like. What differences would be between a smaller project, and a long term project with many team members.

• Google Webmaster Tools reports fake 404 errors

  I have a website where Google Webmaster Tools reports 15,000 links as 404 errors. However, all links return a 200 when I visit them. The problem is, that eventhough I can visit these pages and return a 200, all those 15,000 pages won't index in Google. They aren't appearing in search results. These are constant errors Google Webmaster Tools keeps reporting and I'm not sure what the problem is. We've thought of a DNS issue, but it shouldn't be a DNS issue, because if it were, no page would be indexed (I have 10,000 perfectly indexed). Regarding URL parameters, my pages do not share a similarity in URL parameters that can make it obvious to me what could be causing the error.

  I know this is considered best practise to prevent cookie hijacking. I would like to adopt this approach, but ran across a problem on our forum where the users post images which either aren't posted with URL's over HTTPS or the url itself doesn't support HTTPS. This throws up a lot of ugly browser warnings. I see I have two options: Disable HTTPS for the forum Force all user posted content to start with // in the url so it selects the right protocol, if it doesn't support HTTPS so be it Do I have any other options? How do other sites deal with this?

• Is Email list "cleaning" a legitimate practice?

  A client has provided us with an excel spreadsheet of around 10,000 email addresses, names and addresses. They were taken from a CRM used previously. I've been asked to "clean" up this database - such as check for invalid addresses - (email format, existing mailboxes etc). I've done a bit of Googling and came up with a few "Email List Cleaning Services". Here is one such company. Now my question is - does anyone have any experience with this kind of service, and is it a legitimate service? Alternatively, what are my options for "cleaning" this list? I ask as MailChimp, our preferred email marketing tool, will terminate account access if a certain percentage of emails bounce, (and I imagine similar e-shot services operate on the same basis), to comply with anti-spam regulations etc. This is a legitimate cause, although it may sound quite the contrary.

  Hello for some time I have a problem with graphs in web scenarios on Zabbix 2.2.1, I put below the screen, this problem has appeared at every graph of web scenario This same scenario installed a second zabbixie that runs on my local virtual machine with zabbix. In my local machine all components of zabbix (server, frontend, agents), but in my production zabbix only zabbix frontend are separated from each other. • How should data be passed between client-side Javascript and C# code behind an ASP.NET app?

  I'm looking for the most efficient / standard way of passing data between client-side Javascript code and C# code behind an ASP.NET application. I've been using the following methods to achieve this but they all feel a bit of a fudge. To pass data from Javascript to the C# code is by setting hidden ASP variables and triggering a postback: <asp:HiddenField ID="RandomList" runat="server" /> function SetDataField(data) { document.getElementById('<%=RandomList.ClientID%>').value = data; } Then in the C# code I collect the list: protected void GetData(object sender, EventArgs e) { var _list = RandomList.value; } Going back the other way I often use either ScriptManager to register a function and pass it data during Page_Load: ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "Set","get("Test();",true); or I add attributes to controls before a post back or during the initialization or pre-rendering stages: Btn.Attributes.Add("onclick", "DisplayMessage("Hello");"); These methods have served me well and do the job, but they just dont feel complete. Is there a more standard way of passing data between client side Javascript and C# backend code? Ive seen some posts like this one that describe HtmlElement class; is this something I should look into?

  I am very new at this and have been trying to get my head around my first selector can somebody help? i am trying to extract data from page http://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/landing/home.shtml?cmpid=ahc--ghs-d1--asdacom-dsk-_-hp#/shelf/1215337195041/1/so_false all the info under div class = listing clearfix shelfListing but i cant seem to figure out how to format response.xpath(). I have managed to launch scrapy console but no matter what I type in response.xpath() i cant seem to select the right node. I know it works because when I type response.xpath('//div[@class="container"]') I get a response but don't know how to navigate to the listsing cleardix shelflisting. I am hoping that once i get this bit I can continue working my way through the spider. Thank you in advance! PS I wonder if it is not possible to scan this site - is it possible for the owners to block spiders?

The thought being this would improve time spent on our site and allow for greater advertising dollars. Is it better to have a page with show notes, an mp3 for download AND also stream the podcast live OR just stick to the show notes & mp3 download? • Why am I getting cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi coming up when I browse my webpage?

  I've recently set up a website with a smaller hosting company. The plan has a dedicated IP. They sent me emails to say it's all set up, but now their support channels are all unresponsive even though they say it's open 24 hours. In the File Manager in the cpanel I've put an index.html file in the public_html directory. But when I point my browser to the IP address given to me, it comes up with the cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi page. What is the problem? I haven't set the name-servers for my domain yet, but that shouldn't be a problem because I am using the IP address in the browser. Note: I don't think I have access to ssh.

  Hi, I'm new to dns hosting and I have recently setup google apps for the 'mail.' cname record. How can I use it to display files on the www URL? ie: 'www.' cname. Or is it not possible to upload files using dns hosting only? I also have hosting elsewhere and wanted to know if I could forward the www cname to a subdirectory on that server, but not displaying the subdirectory URL publicly, rather the address bar constantly remains as the dns hosted (original) domain? Thank you!

  The Unity Application Block (Unity) is a lightweight extensible dependency injection container with support for constructor, property, and method call injection. It’s a great library for facilitating Inversion of Control and the recent version supports AOP as well. However, when it comes to performance, it’s CPU hungry. In fact it’s so CPU hungry that it makes it impossible to make it work at Internet Scale. I was investigating some CPU issue on a portal that gets around 3MM hits per day and I found unusually high CPU. Here’s why: I did some CPU profiling on my open source project Dropthings and found that the highest CPU is consumed by Unity’s Resolve<>(). There’s no funky use of Unity in the project. Straightforward Register<>() and Resolve<>(). But as you can see, Resolve<>() is consuming significantly high CPU even after the site is warm and has been running for a while. Then I tried Munq, which is a basic Dependency Injection Container. It has everything you will usually need in a regular project. It boasts to be the fastest DI out there. So, I converted all Unity code to Munq in Dropthings and did a CPU profile and Whala!   There’s no trace of any Munq calls anywhere. That proves Munq is a lot faster than Unity.

• Move the Status Bar Web Address Display to the Address Bar

  Is the ability to see the addresses for weblinks the only reason that you keep the Status Bar visible? Now you can hide the Status Bar and move that address display to the Address Bar in Firefox. Before Here is the normal “Status Bar” address display for the weblink we were hovering the mouse over in our browser. That is nice but if you really prefer to keep the “Status Bar” hidden what do you do? Move that display to a better (and definitely more convenient) location. After Once you have the extension installed that is all there is to it…you are ready to go. Notice the address display in “Address Bar”. That is definitely looking nice. Just for fun we temporarily left the “Status Bar” visible as a demonstration while hovering over the link. And then with the “Status Bar” totally disabled…more screen real-estate is always a good thing. Note: The Status Address Bar extension does not show the original address behind shortened URLs. Conclusion If you are looking for an alternate way to see the address behind weblinks and acquire more screen real-estate, then the Status Bar extension will be a wonderful addition to your Firefox Browser.   There has long been a debate on the internet about SEO in relation to using either sub-domains or sub-directories for blogs. I am not terribly interested in that debate. I merely want to redirect my blogger blog to my domain, the easiest way possible, and in a manner least likely to impair the current functionality of my server/websites. I believe that the simplest way in which to do this is to use a subdirectory for the blog (although I am slightly concerned that the CNAME record will be shared by both) My question is this: how to use custom domain sub-directories when blogger refuse their use; complaining that the "URL must not end with a path" when a user attempts to establish such a custom domain? Google searches on this matter are oddly useless, as most results return Blogger's forum entries that always seem to direct to Blogger's Help home page o.O (using the search facilities of Blogger's Help directory itself fails to unearth these forum posts). Any pointers (no pun intended) would be greatly appreciated.

  Hello all, disclaimer If this is the wrong location for this question, then please advise me accordingly. backgound I've been using Disqus and intense debate as a 'comments' service for a variety of my sites to great effect and love the fact that i get alot of the facebook/twitter integration 'for free', as well as the SEO benefits. request To this end, does anyone out there know of similar services that can be used to pull entire forums/threaded discussions into the app in a similar fashion (i.e. via ajax webservices). google has been at a loss to turn anything up on this front and i'm therefore wondeing if it's unlikely that such a 'service' exists. respect hope this stikes a chord out there... btw - altho using this in asp.net mvc, I'm aware that this technology could be used on any platform capable of consuming javascript via ajax, thus the wide spread of 'tags'.

• Single click handler for all buttons in Javascript? Is it a pattern? Whats the benefit?

  I have been told that when there are multiple buttons on the page for same purpose but targeting different item e.g. delete item on a grid of items, they say it is recommended to just register for click handler only on the top most element like 'body' and check what was clicked instead of hooking up click with every delete button. Whats the benefit of this? Creating more handlers causes problems? Is it an optimization of some sort? Is it a pattern? Does it have anything to do with performance? Where can I read more about it?

From a programming standpoint, what is the best method for setting up and running email notifications? Should I use an ASP.NET Service? A Windows Service? What are the pitfalls to either? How should I log emails that are sent? I don't care if they're received, but I do need to be able to prove that I did or did not send an email.
