• Linq-to-SQL and Performance.

  HI, I am developing asp.net mvc site with linq-to-sql we are having 1000 cocurrent users and we are having performance problems. I have found that stackovewflow is also build on linq-to-sql? So can anybody know how they improved performance. Without line performance was good each page are loaded in 3 seconds but after migrating to linq as per our client requirement page comes in 8 to 10 seconds which is not acceptable performance. Our HTML is very clear but we are having very complex database operations. Any tip or code will be best answer. Thanks in advance,

  Hey guys, quick question, I have this query, and I am trying to get the latest comment for each topic and then sort those results in descending order (therefore one comment per topic). I have what I think should work, but my join always messes my results up. Somehow, it seems to have sorted the end results properly, but has not taken the latest comment from each topic instead it seems to have just taken a random comment. • C/C++ memory usage API in Linux/Windows

  I'd like to obtain memory usage information for both per process and system wide. In Windows, it's pretty easy. GetProcessMemoryInfo and GlobalMemoryStatusEx do these jobs greatly and very easily. For example, GetProcessMemoryInfo gives "PeakWorkingSetSize" of the given process. GlobalMemoryStatusEx returns system wide available memory. However, I need to do it on Linux. I'm trying to find Linux system APIs that are equivalent GetProcessMemoryInfo and GlobalMemoryStatusEx. I found 'getrusage'. However, max 'ru_maxrss' (resident set size) in struct rusage is just zero, which is not implemented. Also, I have no idea to get system-wide free memory. Current workaround for it, I'm using "system("ps -p %my_pid -o vsz,rsz");". Manually logging to the file. But, it's dirty and not convenient to process the data. I'd like to know some fancy Linux APIs for this purpose.

• Push a variable into global scope?

  We use instantiate and put system critical objects in $GLOBALS for easy access from anywhere (e.g. DB, Cache, User, etc.). We use $GLOBALS so much that it would (yes, really) drop the amount of code quite a bit if I could reference it like $G = &$GLOBALS for a shorthand call. The problem is that, per my experience and several hours of Googling, I have not found any construct in PHP which allows you to 'flag' a var as global, making $GLOBALS first class, and everything else second class. Am I missing something? Is this possible?

  Hi all, I want to create an online quiz website using Silverlight. When the registered users are logged in, they can view and answer the quiz once per page. To proceed to the next question, they must push next button, and the new data downloaded from the server. The previous questions are not cached.   I have two forms in one view updating the User Profile. One Form is to Update my name etc. and one is to change my password. Profile Form: - form_for @user, :url => account_path do |f| = f.error_messages ...form fields here... Password Form: - form_for @user, :url => account_path do |pf| = pf.error_messages ...password fields here... As you can see they both point to the same update action in the users controller. If I type in a invalid password both error_messages show me the same error message. How can I output separate error messages per form?

  Suppose we have some named enums: enum MyEnum { FOO, BAR = 0x50 }; What I googled for is a script (any language) that scans all the headers in my project and generates a header with one function per enum. char* enum_to_string(MyEnum t); And a implementation with something like this: char* enum_to_string(MyEnum t){ switch(t){ case FOO: return "FOO"; case BAR: return "BAR"; default: return "INVALID ENUM"; } } The gotcha is really with typedefed enums, and unnamed C style enums. Does anybody know something for this? EDIT: The solution should not modify my source, except for the generated functions. The enums are in an API, so using the solutions proposed until now is just not an option.

  Hi, I'd like to send global notifications to my users (1000+ users) and allow them to close the notification box once they have read the message. Basically I may send one notification per week globally ie/ each user get the same message and they are not personal in nature. What is the best way to achieve this? Create 2 tables: **tb_messages** message_id massage_title message_content **tb_read_messages** user_id message_id is-read That way i can just show each user the current notifications that are not read? select * from tb_read_messages WHERE user_id = $user_id AND is-read = no OR is there a more efficient way? • efficient video format/codec for sparse & binary blob tracking

  I am working on a blob tracking project and have many high-definition videos that I would like to reduce in size for storage and downstream tracking/shape-analysis. I want to use a lossless method that takes advantage of the black and white nature of the video as well as the fact that not much is moving between individual frames. The videos are quite sparse, with 5 to 10 b&w blobs per frame occupying <30% of the space in total, with each blob moving <5-10% of the field of view between frames and not changing shape too much between 2-3 frames. I will work in Python, Matlab, or LabView for this project, and could use a batch utility if available. It may be worthwhile to export the files as compressed image stacks if a proper video format can't be found. What are the pros and cons of this? A video codec uses correlations between neighboring frames, so it should be more efficient, but not if the wrong one is chosen or if it is improperly configured.

• Why does ElapsedTicks X 10 000 not equal ElapsedMilliseconds for .Net's Stopwatch?

  I am trying to performance test some code. I am using a stopwatch. When I output the number of milliseconds it always tells me 0 so I thought that I would try the number of ticks. I am seeing that the number of ticks is about 20 000 to 30 000. Looking at the MSDN at TimeSpan.TicksPerMillisecond it says that is 10 000 ticks per millisecond. In that case why are the elapsed milliseconds on my stopwatch not appearing as 2 or 3? What am I missing? I have even outputed the result on the same line. This is what I get. Time taken: 26856 ticks, 0 ms And it is constant.

• Optimum php.ini and my.cnf settings for a small Drupal 7 site on a virtual server

  I looking for advice on how to set up the default configuration of php.ini and my.cnf for a small site (100 pages) with very little traffic (300 visitors per day). All pages have a bit of text, some images, no video, no audio, no flash/silverlight, very little javascript and jquery. For tracking I'm using GA and Piwik. The main site database is around 50MB. The site is hosted on a virtual server with 20GB RAM and 6 vCPUs so there's hopefully a lot of muscle to make it run very fast. I don't know much about tweaking php and mysql settings and would appreciate it if your answers can be as detailed as possible. Thanks

• Another memory leak question

  Hello My application keeps running for 4 to 6 hours, During this time there is no contineous increase in memory or anything similar. Then after 4 to 6 hours i start getting EOutofMemory Exceptions. Even still at that time there is only 900MB out of 3GB RAM is used as per task manager. And application itself is not using more then 200MB . Then why i am getting EOoutofMEmory error ? Does it mean that memory leak is not necessarily visible in task manager ? Regagards

  I'm about to change my application to include tool tips for all buttons, combo boxes, etc. I was wondering if there are any recommendations on doing this. For every control I'd like the tooltip to show the control's name in bold, followed by the description. I want to keep the style separated from the control, so I can change the tooltip style globally. What I would like to have, unless there's a better suggestion, is two additional fields per button/combobox/etc: 1-ToolTipName and 2-ToolTipDesc, both containing a string. How can I accomplish this (and is it even possible?).

  I am working on a project in java and I was hoping to be able to collect statistics from the client and a possible problem that I fear will occur is the manipulation of the variables used for collection which will lead to illegitimate statistics. Is it in any way possible to prevent the manipulation of variables or is it always possible? For example: I want to log the actions made per hour from the client. The variable acting as a counter for the amount of actions performed is manipulated and a much larger amount is added to the counter. This data is then uploaded to the server (Of course using a multi-tier architecture to prevent even more possible problems) and considered 'legit.' Is there any way to prevent this?

  Consider a Parent / Child / GrandChild structure in a database table schema, or even a deeper hierarchy. These being in the same aggregate. One table DAYS keeps a single row per day, and has a "Date" field. This is the root table, or maybe a child of the root. No row can ever be deleted in this table. In this case, however complex my table schema looks like, however far away in the hierarchy any other table is, is there any reason why any other table would hold a Date value? Can't it instead just have a FK to the DAYS table. I obviously assume that the creation of these date fields happen not before such datefield exist in the DAYS table. I'm now thinking just about the date part to be relevant, not the time part. Not sure if all databases can store these individually. That's maybe relevant, but not really the focus of the question.

• Need help in filtering records based on radius value in solr

  Hi, I am using solr with Lucene spatial 2.9.1 as per http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-spatial/ I want to write a query, that will retrieve records within a given radius using hsin function, and using cartesian tiers as filters. So i wrote query like this http://localhost:8983/solr/select/?q=body:engineering colleges^0 AND _val_:"recip(hsin(0.227486,1.354193 , lat_rad, lng_rad, 4), 1, 1, 0)"^100 &&fq={!tier x=13.033993 y=77.589569 radians=false dist=4 prefix=tier_ unit=m} My records include many US records and few Indian records. For US records filtering based on radius is working fine. But for Indian records its not varying even if i change the radius . So can any one tell me if anything is wrong with the query or is there any configuration issues related to solr in order to make this work, or since record density is very less for Indian records filtering is not happening properly.Am not able to figure it out.   I'm writing a PHP script to generate SQL dumps from my database for version control purposes. It already dumps the data structure by means of running the appropriate SHOW CREATE .... query. Now I want to dump data itself but I'm unsure about the best method. My requirements are: I need a record per row Rows must be sorted by primary key SQL must be valid and exact no matter the data type (integers, strings, binary data...) Dumps should be identical when data has not changed I can detect and run mysqldump as external command but that adds an extra system requirement and I need to parse the output in order to remove headers and footers with dump information I don't need (such as server version or dump date). I'd love to keep my script as simple as I can so it can be hold in an standalone file. What are my alternatives?

  Hello. I'm trying to use a QTreeView for a first time, with a QAbstractItemModel. And instantly it's a problem: QAbstractItemModel interface declares methods as 'const', assuming they will not change data. But i want a result of SQL query displayed, and returning data for a record with specified indeq REQUIRES to use QSqlQuery::seek() that is a non-const. Is it any 'official' guideline to use a QAbstractItemModel with data that MUST be changed in order to get number of items, data per item etc? Or i must hack C++ with const casts?

• Spring 3.0 REST implementation or Jersey?

  Hi, SO! I'm currently trying to figure out which implementation of JSR-311 I'm going to recommend further up the food chain. I've pretty much narrowed it down to two options - Spring 3.0 with it's native support for REST - or use Sun's own Jersey (Restlets might also be an option). To me it doesn't seem to be much of a difference in the actual syntax, but there might be issues with performance that I haven't figured out yet. The service is meant to replace some heavy-duty EJB's and make a RESTful Webservice instead. The load is expected to be rather high, up in the 100k users per day (max) range, but will be seriously load balanced. Thanks for all your insights.

• Enumerating combinations in a distributed manner

  I have a problem where I must analyse 500C5 combinations (255244687600) of something. Distributing it over a 10 node cluster where each cluster processes roughly 10^6 combinations per second means the job will be complete in about 7hours. The problem I have is distributing the 255244687600 combinations over the 10 nodes. I'd like to present each node with 25524468760, however the algorithms I'm using can only produce the combinations sequentially, I'd like to be able to pass the set of elements and a range of combination indicies eg: [0-10^7) or [10^7,2.0 10^7) etc and have the nodes themselves figure out the combinations. The algorithms I'm using at the moment are from the following: http://home.roadrunner.com/~hinnant/combinations.html A logical question I've considered using a master node, that enumerates each of the combinations and sends work to each of the nodes, however the overhead incurred in iterating the combinations from a single node and communicating back and forth work is enormous, and will subsequently lead to the master node becoming the bottleneck. Are there any good combination iterating algorithms geared up for efficient/optimal distributed enumeration?
