So, there is always the chance of thinking not being renewed as an April fools joke.  Well, I get to postpone that joke one more time. It looks like, I’ve been renewed again. WAHOOO!! :) Thank you Microsoft, and thank you to everyone one of you for your support and best wishes, and most of all, thanks to our MVP lead, Melissa – many don’t realize it, but it’s a tough job she has to do. Think about it, all the people who are MVPs, those who no longer will be, and those who want to be. 11 years ago when I got my first award, my love for technology was insane. • proxychained browser unable to open files

  Ubuntu 10.10, Midori 0.3.2 browser (same problem with Epiphany 2.30.2, Chrome 11.0.686.1 dev; haven't tried with Firefox as yet) Proxychains-3.1 installed, working fine. Here is the deal: when NOT proxychained, Midori or Epiphany can download and open a file (e.g. PDFs from a Google search) in Evince without problem. But when proxychained, neither browser can open PDF files. The message is, "file xxx downloaded". Then it tries to open the file, an indication appears in the status bar, the turning wheel appears, and then nothing. Evince doesn't open. Whats going on here? In both cases (with and without proxychains) files are downloaded to the /tmp folder. They have the same file permissions and ownership. Whats different when proxychained? Why can't the files be opened and why are there no error messages or notifications. Why the silent failure? I don't want to use FF or Chrome. Chrome does not follow my GTK2 customizations and FF is just too resource heavy. Please help.

  Hi, I've just built a new machine with a Core i5-760 CPU. Max speed is 2.80GHz (turbo mode notwithstanding). I've also done a vanilla install of Ubuntu 10.10. I've added the cpufreq-selector applet to the top panel, and its menus only allow me to select up to 2.39GHz.   Deep in the trenches of ODI development I raised my head above the parapet to read a few odds and ends and then think why don’t they know this? Such as this article here – in the past customers (see forum) were told to use a staging route which has a big overhead for large files. This KM is an example of the great extensibility capabilities of ODI, its quite simple, just a new KM that; improves the out of the box experience – just build the mapping and the appropriate KM is used improves out of the box performance for file to file data movement. This improvement for out of the box handling for File to File data integration cases (from the 11.1.1.5.2 companion CD and on) dramatically speeds up the file integration handling. In the past I had seem some consultants write perl versions of the file to file integration case, now Oracle ships this KM to fill the gap. You can find the documentation for the IKM here. The KM uses pure java to perform the integration, using java.io classes to read and write the file in a pipe – it uses java threading in order to super-charge the file processing, and can process several source files at once when the datastore's resource name contains a wildcard. This is a big step for regular file processing on the way to super-charging big data files using Hadoop – the KM works with the lightweight agent and regular filesystems. So in my design below transforming a bunch of files, by default the IKM File to File (Java) knowledge module was assigned. I pointed the KM at my JDK (since the KM generates and compiles java), and I also increased the thread count to 2, to take advantage of my 2 processors. For my illustration I transformed (can also filter if desired) and moved about 1.3Gb with 2 threads in 140 seconds (with a single thread it took 220 seconds) - by no means was this on any super computer by the way. The great thing here is that it worked well out of the box from the design to the execution without any funky configuration, plus, and a big plus it was much faster than before, So if you are doing any file to file transformations, check it out!

• Launching php script through comman line - keeping terminal window open after execution

  Oh, my girlfriend really likes it when I launch php scripts! There's something special about them, she says ... Thus, I coded this script to run throught the CLI (Command Line Interface) - so it's running locally, not on a web server. It launches just fine through right click open run in terminal but closes right after execution. **Is there a way to keep the terminal window open? Of course I can launch it through a terminal window - which would stay open - but I'm looking for a one click action. With bash scripts I use $SHELL but that didn't work (see code below). So far, the only thing I came up with is sleep(10); which gives me 10 seconds for my girl to check the output. • New Dell Vostro 3550 will not boot into Live CD

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu and/or it's derivatives on my new Dell Vostro 3550 but I'm finding it impossible to boot into the live CD environment. Here are the things I've already tried: Booting from multiple versions of multiple distributions (Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 11.04, Mint 11, Mint 10) Booting from a Live USB created with unetbootin, the Linux Mint startup disk creator, the universal USB creator and dd of=linuxmint.***.iso if if=/dev/sdx. Burning a CD and booting from the internal CD drive. In the case of the USB keys with the latest versions of Ubuntu it gets to the page where I can select a boot option, but after selecting an option the screen goes black, even the back light turns off. With the older distributions the screen stays on but it starts loading and then just hangs. The CDs don't even try to boot. It starts spinning but then falls back to the default Windows install. The only way I've got it to work so far is with Wubi, but that's hardly ideal. I'd like to have two separate physical partitions with a /home and /. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

While this appears confusing it works as designed. Instead of a full page re-rendering, ADF Faces events and components can trigger partial page refresh, in which only portions of a page are refresh upon a request. In addition, some components - including the af:popup and af:subForm - represent event roots. Event roots don't propagated event notification outside of the component tag boundary, which means that the ADF Faces lifecycle only executed on components that are children of the event root component. The PanelCollection component is an event root and therefore only validates and refreshes data of its child components.

  After applying the suggested updates (179) an error message at the very end of the process suggested me to run apt-get install -f. Since it is a fairly new Ubuntu install (x86) I didn't setup anything in Thunderbird yet. • When is the default storage rule not really the default storage rule?

  In 11g WebCenter Content (WCC) introduced dispersion rules in the vault and weblayout directory paths to better distribute content across the directories. The dispersion rule was based on dRevClassID. The only problem with this is that dRevClassID did not remain the same when you copied content from one WCC instance to another using Archiver like in a contribution-consumption scenario. This could cause problems because the web-viewable path would not be the same between the contribution and consumption instances. In the PS5 (11.1.1.6.0) release of WCC they addressed this by configuring the File Store Provider (FSP) so that all new content would use a storage rule with a dispersion rule based on dDocName, which would stay the same when content was copied to another WCC instance. To support migration from older versions of WCC they left the default storage rule unchanged and created a new storage rule called DispByContentId and made that the default storage rule for all new content. I only stumbled upon this a while back when I was trying to change the FSP configuration so that all content used a webless storage rule. I changed the default storage rule, restarted WCC, and checked in a new content item. To my surprise the new content was not created as webless. I struggled with this for a while until I noticed there were multiple storage rules defined in the FSP configuration. When I looked at the default value for the xStorageRule field in Configuration Manager, sure enough it was no longer default, but was now DispByContentId. Once I updated the DispByContentId storage rule to webless and restarted WCC all my new content was now created using the webless storage rule, just like I wanted. I noticed when I was creating this blog post that the default storage rule is also listed on the File Store Provider Information page, but I guess I didn't see that when I originally did this.
