• How can I improve this SQL to avoid several problems with its results?

  I am having some problems with trying to search. Currently this will only return results that have at least 1 row in the maintenance_parts table. I would like it to return results even if there are 0 parts rows. My second problem is that when you search for a vehicle and it should return multiple results (multiple maintenance rows) it will only return 1 result for that vehicle. Some Background Info: The user has 2 fields to fill out. The fields are vehicle and keywords. The vehicle field is meant to allow searching based on the make, model, VIN, truck number (often is 2 - 3 digits or a letter prefix followed by 2 digits), and a few other fields that belong to the truck table. The keywords are meant to search most fields in the maintenance and maintenance_parts tables (things like the description of the work, parts name, parts number). The maintenance_parts table can contain 0, 1, or more rows for each maintenance row. The truck table contains exactly 1 row for every maintenance row. A truck can have multiple maintenance records. • A question of long-running and disruptive branches

  We are about to begin prototyping a new application that will share some existing infrastructure assemblies with an existing application, and also involve a significant subset of the existing domain model. Parts of the domain model will likely undergo some serious changes for this new application, and the endgame for all of this, once the new application has been fully specified and is launch-ready is that we would like to re-unify the models of the two applications (as well as share a database, link functionality, etc.), but for the duration of development, prototyping, etc, we will be using a separate database so that we can change things without worrying about impact to development or use of the existing application. Since it is a prototype, there will be a pretty long window during which serious changes or rearchitecturing can occur as product management experiments with different workflows, different customer bases are surveyed, and we try and keep up. We have already made a Subversion branch, so as to not impact concurrent development on the mature application, and are toying with 2 potential ways of moving forward with this: Use the svn branch as the sole mechanism of separation. Make our changes to the existing domain models, and evaluate their impact on the existing application (and make requisite changes to ProjectA) when we have established that our long-running side branch is stable enough for re-entry to trunk. "Fork" the shared code (temporarily): Copy ProjectA.Entities to NewProject.Entities, and treat all of the NewProject code as self-contained. When all of the perturbations around the model have died down and we feel satisfied, manually re-integrate the changes (as granular or sweeping as warranted) back into ProjectA.Entities, updating ProjectA to use the improved models at each step (this can take place either before or after the subversion merge has occurred). The subversion merge will then not handle recombination of any of the heavy changes here. Note: the "fork" method only applies to the code we see significant changes in store for, and whose modification will break ProjectA - shared infrastructure stuff for example, we would just modify in place (on our branch) and let the merge sort out. Development is hard, go shopping. Naturally, after not coming to an agreement, we're turning it over to the oracle of power that is SO. Any experience with any of these methods, pain points to watch out for, something new entirely?

• Designing a database for a user/points system? (in Django)

  First of all, sorry if this isn't an appropriate question for StackOverflow. I've tried to make it as generalisable as possible. I want to create a database (MySQL, site running Django) that has users, who can be allocated a certain number of points for various types of action - it's a collaborative game. My requirements are to obtain: the number of points a user has the user's ranking compared to all other users and the overall leaderboard (i.e. all users ranked in order of points) This is what I have so far, in my Django models.py file: class SiteUser(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=250 ) email = models.EmailField(max_length=250 ) date_added = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) def points_total(self): points_added = PointsAdded.objects.filter(user=self) points_total = 0 for point in points_added: points_total += point.points return points_total class PointsAdded(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey('SiteUser') action = models.ForeignKey('Action') date_added = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) def points(self): points = Action.objects.filter(action=self.action) return points class Action(models.Model): points = models.IntegerField() action = models.CharField(max_length=36) However it's rapidly becoming clear to me that it's actually quite complex (in Django query terms at least) to figure out the user's ranking and return the leaderboard of users. At least, I'm finding it tough. Is there a more elegant way to do something like this? This question seems to suggest that I shouldn't even have a separate points table - what do people think? It feels more robust to have separate tables, but I don't have much experience of database design.

  I'm working on a model for a simple fishing competition and I have some issues with my design. Every Species is connected to a reference weight that changes from year to year The number of point for a capture is its Weight divided by the current reference weight for the species. One way to solve the problem is to connect a capture to SpeciesReferenceWeight instead of Species public class SpeciesReferenceWeight : Entity { public virtual Species Species { get; set; } public virtual int ReferenceWeight { get; set; } public virtual int Year { get; set; } } But in that way that Capture is connected to the implementation details of the game and from my point of view a capture is still a capture even if it's not included in a game. The result I'm aiming for is like: http://hornalen.net/fishbonkern/2007/ that I wrote a couple of years ago with brute force sql and no domain model. I would be very happy for all kinds of feeback on this issue.

  im trying to understand the process of creating tables in ruby-on-rails 3. i have read about migrations. so i am supposed to create tables by editing in the files in: Database Migrations/migrate/20100611214419_create_posts Database Migrations/migrate/20100611214419_create_categories but they were generated by: rails generate model Post name:string description:text rails generate model Category name:string description:text does this mean i have to use "rails generate model" command everytime i want to create a table? what if i create a migration file but want to add columns. do i create another migration file for adding those or do i edit the existing migration file directly? the guide told me to add a new one, but here is the part i dont understand. why would i add a new one? cause then the new state will be dependent of 2 migration files. in symfony i just edit a schema.yml file directly, there are no migration files with versioning and so on. im new to RoR and want to get the picture of creating tables. thanks

• Rails HTML Table update fields in mongo with AJAX

  I'm building a Rails app backed by mongodb using mongoid. It's a one page app, with a HTML table, every field for every row of which, needs to be editable without refreshing the page. This is your usual Rails view ( like many in rails casts ) showing a table with rows and columns containing data. For example. I'm showing cars, and showing their make, model and notes They way I'm doing this is by appending _id of a mongo document to every column and marking it's field name in html id too. Then I pick up the value for $("#id") and send it to rails controller via AJAX and run @car.update_attributes method accordingly.   I am not sure am I doing these correct. I have 3 models, Account, User, and Event. Account contains a group of Users. Each User have its own username and password for login, but they can access the same Account data under the same Account. Events is create by a User, which other Users in the same Account can also read or edit it. I created the following migrations and models. Is this setting correct? Every time when a user create a new account, the system will ask for the user information, e.g. username and password. How can I add them into correct tables? I've been following a tutorial and a sample application, namely 5 Days of Wicket - Writing the tests: http://www.mysticcoders.com/blog/2009/03/10/5-days-of-wicket-writing-the-tests/ I've set up my own little project with a simple shoutbox that saves messages to a database. I then wanted to set up a couple of tests that would make sure that if a message is stored in the database, the retrieved object would contain the exact same data. Upon running mvn test all my tests fail. The exception has been pasted in the first code box underneath.   I am running a sproc on an SQL Server 2005 server which is resulting in the following error: Msg 64, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) Once the error occurs I loose my connection to the server, but able to reconnect. There is nothing in the Event logs. The database is still functional and running its website fine. EDIT: This occurs every time I run this sproc, or it's called by an application.   Hi there, I have a problem with a Web Service Consumer written in ASP.NET. The error message is: System.InvalidOperationException: Client found response content type of 'application/xml; charset=utf-8', but expected 'text/xml'. The client is based on System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol. We can't change the Content-Type given by the provider, this has to be 'application/xml; charset=utf-8'. Is there any way to change what Content-Type the SoapHttpClientProtocol expects? Unfortunately, we are probably limited to .NET 1.1. Thanks! Update: We found a way to change the Content-Type sent by the provider, and this solved the problem. I'd still be curious to know how to change the expectations of the consumer though.

  Im trying to execute a stored procedure and simply insert its results in a temporary table, and I'm getting the following message: The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "MyServerName" was unable to begin a distributed transaction. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "MyServerName" returned message "No transaction is active.". My query looks like this: INSERT INTO #TABLE EXEC MyServerName.MyDatabase.dbo.MyStoredProcedure Param1, Param2, Param3 Exact column number, names, the problem is not the result. MSDTC is allowed and started in both computers, Remote procedure calling too. The machines are not in the same domain, but I can execute remote queries from my machine and get the result. I can even execute the stored procedure and see its results, I just can't insert it in another table. Help, please? :)

I have another DAO that already does majority of the work that those do (besides the authenticating a user) using Spring-LDAP. My problem is that I want the principal to be of my own custom bean class. What is the simplest way to do this? Initially I was thinking to create a custom authentication provider, but since the default one does exactly what I want, there doesnt seem to be a need. I am thinking I just need to override whatever object actually returns the Principal bean. Is this possible, and able to be injected into the security ldap authenticator context?

This suggests to me that the expiry of the session is with the website and not the OpenId provider. Looking at the DotNetOpenId code in ASP MVC, I can see that after a successful authentication by the OpenId provider FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie is called with the identifier and a boolean parameter to determine if the cookie should be persisted. How can I force this cookie to expire, say in 2020 instead of whatever the default value is.
