• Audit file removal (auditctl)

  For some reason, some script or program is removing a pid file for the service on the linux server (centos5.4 / 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5xen). I suspect a faulty cron script, but manual investigation did not lead me to it. And i still want to track it down. Imagine a cron script deleting the file. So i need some way to expand/add audit rule(s) to be able to trace the parents of the /bin/rm at the time of removal. I have been thinking to add some rule to monitor all process creation, something like: auditctl -a task,always But this happen to be very resource intensive. So i need help or advice how to combine these rules, or how to expand any of the rules to help track the script/program. Thanks.

• SSH & SFTP: Should I assign one port to each user to facilitate bandwidth monitoring?

  There is no easy way to track real-time per-user bandwidth usage for SSH and SFTP. I think assigning one port to each user may help. Idea of implementation Use case Bob, with UID 1001, shall connect on port 31001. Alice, with UID 1002, shall connect on port 31002. John, with UID 1003, shall connect on port 31003. (I do not want to lauch several sshd instances as proposed in question 247291.) 1. Setup for SFTP: In /etc/ssh/sshd_config: Port 31001 Port 31002 Port 31003 Subsystem sftp /usr/bin/sftp-wrapper.sh The file sftp-wrapper.sh starts the sftp server only if the port is the correct one: #!/bin/sh mandatory_port=3`id -u` current_port=`echo $SSH_CONNECTION | awk '{print $4}'` if [ $mandatory_port -eq $current_port ] then exec /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server fi 2. But this is not a problem to me: I do not need an exact computation of per-user bandwidth usage, but an indicator that is approximately correct in standard situations. Questions Is the idea of assigning one port for each user is a good one? Is the proposed setup an reliable one? If I have to open dozens of ports for many users, should I expect a performance drawback? Do you know a rrdtool-based application which could make the chart above?

• Unable to create files in a directory

  I have created a directory in Virutalbox. Using VBoxManage, I am executing a script inside the Ubuntu VM directory I created above from Ubuntu host OS. But if the script in the VM contains commands for creating a new file, they are not executing. "echo" commands before and after the touch ommand are working fine. I even used root user for VBoxManage to install. I think the directory is not allowing the files to be created . How can I make a directory in Linux to be 777 to all new files created automatically. I mean, even if I make the directory (chmod 777 dir), I am unable to execute the script from the host. Please help. It may be simple permissions problem. Even root is unable to execute. • Upstart multiple instances of service not working.

  I started playing with MongoDB on Lucid. Now I would like to run a DB and Config server on the same box. They both use the same binary to launch, but with different config files and running on different ports. All directories for log and lib is split so one goes to mongodb and the other to mongoconf. Each process can be started without any problems on their own. start mongodb stop mongodb start mongoconf stop mongoconf But if I try to start both, the second one would just start and exit. Using 'initctl log-priority debug' I got the following in the logs. Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: event_finished: Finished started event Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: job_process_handler: Ignored event 1 (1) for process 5690 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) main process (5690) terminated with status 1 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) goal changed from start to stop Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) state changed from running to stopping man 5 init shows that you can use instance names to differentiate the two. I tried using 'instance mongoconf' in the on upstart script and 'instance mongodb' in the other one, and it still fails. I can manually start the other process, so there is definitely no conflicts on port numbers or directories. Any ideas on what to try or how to get output on why it is 'terminated with status 1'? What is the purpose of these variables? Where is this procedure stored?

• Read non-blocking from multiple fifos in parallel

  I sometimes sit with a bunch of output fifos from programs that run in parallel. I would like to merge these fifos. The naïve solution is: cat fifo* > output But this requires the first fifo to complete before reading the first byte from the second fifo, and this will block the parallel running programs. Another way is: (cat fifo1 & cat fifo2 & ... ) > output But this may mix the output thus getting half-lines in output. When reading from multiple fifos, there must be some rules for merging the files. Typically doing it on a line by line basis is enough for me, so I am looking for something that does: parallel_non_blocking_cat fifo* > output which will read from all fifos in parallel and merge the output on with a full line at a time. I can see it is not hard to write that program. All you need to do is: open all fifos do a blocking select on all of them read nonblocking from the fifo which has data into the buffer for that fifo if the buffer contains a full line (or record) then print out the line if all fifos are closed/eof: exit goto 2 So my question is not: can it be done? My question is: Is it done already and can I just install a tool that does this?

• Constructor and Destructor of a singleton object called twice

  I'm facing a problem in singleton object in c++. Here is the explanation: Problem info: I have a 4 shared libraries (say libA.so, libB.so, libC.so, libD.so) and 2 executable binary files each using one another shared library( say libE.so) which deals with files. The purpose of libE.so is to write data into a file and if the executable restarts or size of file exceeds a certain limit it is zipped and a new file is created with time stamp in name. It is using singleton object. It exports a handler class for getting and using singleton. Compressing only happens in the above said two cases. The user/loader executable can specify the starting name of file only no other control is provided by handler class. libA.so, libB.so, libC.so and libD.so have almost same behavior. They all have a class and declare and object of an handler which gets the instance of the singleton in libE.so and uses it for further purpose. All these libraries are linked to two executable binary files. If only one of the two executable runs then its fine, But if both executable runs one after other then the file of the first started executable gets compressed. Debug info: The constructor and destructor of the singleton object is called twice.(for each executable) The object of singleton is a static object and never deleted. The executable is not able to exit/return gives: glibc detected * (exe1 or exe2): double free or corruption (!prev): some_addr * Running with binaries valgrind gives that the above error is due to the destructor of the singleton object. • How to avoid duplicates when copying files that have been renamed at the destination

  I have to get pictures from a folder – with subfolders which are updated automatically – with their extensions. These files have to be copied in a folder where a website based on PHP will edit them (by renaming and creating an XML file) to be downloadable and integrated in an XML feed. Because of the rename function of the script, when I perform the copy gain, all the files are duplicated, because the script has renamed the original ones already. I've tried a few things with rsync but I'm looking for something more powerful because I can't copy files with an external "history". #!/bin/bash find '/home/name/picture' -name '*.jpg' | while read FILE ; do rsync --backup --backup-dir=incremental --suffix=.old "$FILE" /var/www/media ; done wget --spider 'http://myscript.php' ; #exit 0 PS: As a little addition, I'd like to replace '.' with a 'space' just after the *.jpeg copy. • How to fix a damaged/corrupted NTFS filesystem/partition without losing the data on it?

  I was going to install Fedora 15 along side my Windows 7 Starter on my Acer Apire One D255E and at some point during the resizing of the NTFS partition (the one with Windows on it) the setup failed. Now I cannot access this partition from any OS. When I tried to access it from a Fedora install running on a USB flashdrive I get this error: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 12: Failed to read last sector (452534271): Invalid argument HINTS: Either the volume is a RAID/LDM but it wasn't setup yet, or it was not setup correctly (e.g. by not using mdadm --build ...), or a wrong device is tried to be mounted, or the partition table is corrupt (partition is smaller than NTFS), or the NTFS boot sector is corrupt (NTFS size is not valid). Failed to mount '/dev/sda5': Invalid argument The device '/dev/sda5' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS. Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me but I was really hoping it would to someone and they can give me a way to restore the partition without losing everything on it (I have a lot of important notes from various classes on there)? • package manager cannot create users? installation script fails?

  It seems that when trying to install any package which requires the creation of a system User and Group, the installer fails with the error: install: invalid user 'username' When it happened the first time, I assumed it was related to the package, or it's installation script. But now I am attempting a different package, and alas, the same issue arises! note: /etc/passwd and /etc/group is not chattr -i Here is the example output from an attempted installation (of varnish): Selecting previously unselected package varnish. Unpacking varnish (from .../varnish_3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb) ... Processing triggers for man-db ... Setting up libvarnishapi1 (3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1) ... Setting up varnish (3.0.2-1ubuntu0.1) ... install: invalid user `varnish' dpkg: error processing varnish (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Processing triggers for libc-bin ... ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Errors were encountered while processing: varnish note: running ubuntu 12.04 For now, I have resolved the issue by manually creating the users, and running apt-get install -f, but this does not resolve the actual issue. Any ideas?

• HP LaserJet 1515: Disable "refill" warning

  I have a HP LaserJet 1515 connected to a Windows 7 PC. The Magenta cartridge is empty; the printer shows a warning to that effect, and won't let me print even black-and-white documents any more. I can't turn the warning off manually using the printer's small console: When I try to enter any menu, the display says "Menu access disabled". I have no idea why. There is a setting to override the warning, but it can't be changed using the Network interface in the browser (Although it is there on the status page) According to the manual,the HP printing tool is supposed to offer a switch for this, but it won't install on my Windows 7. It just rumbles about for half an hour, to magnificently exit with an "unknown error" requiring a reboot. On second look, the problem seems to be that Windows 7 just isn't supported. There is no download link for the tool when you specify Windows 7 as your OS. I just want to print a black-and-white-document on a printer whose black cartridge is still 65% full. Is this indeed impossible? On second thought, I'm cross-posting this on the HP support forum. I'll update here if anything comes up.

• Using Monit to monitor Resque

  I'm trying to use resque as a job runner for Rails. I've tried this config, and many other ways of demonizing the rescue task (because running rake resque:work leaves the terminal tied to that command). Unfortunately, their example configuration doesn't work for me. Does the configuration look correct? Or is there another way to turn the process into a daemon? • Jabber client for windows 7

  I am looking for a jabber client with some specific functions. I have spent 1½ day looking for one and it is getting tiresome. Clients that I have been using, that have what I need, but I am not interesting for a reason in are: Pidgin, does not show complete messages in their popups. Miranda IM, I have a constant disconnect issue that does not seem to be resolved in my case. What I need are: Popups A popup that shows broadcasts to users. A popup that show when my username is typed in a conference chat. I need to be able to view the full message in the popup. No configuration of a theme to make this enabled, or if there is a working theme for it already. Preferable placement is on the top right of the screen. Able to 'popup' when running full screen applications, much like games. Conferences Easy access to bookmarked conferences. I do not want to go through submenus to rejoin a disconnected or closed conference. If I close the conference window I want to be connected to the conference until I exit the client. Tabbed interface. Configuration Sober configurations, options are great but there is a limit and the above needs to be availble in the options in a understandable manner. What I wish for: MSN Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Facebook Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Conferences/chats Not needed! Eyecandy is always nice.

• Executing a git command using remote powershell results in a NativeCommmandError

  I am getting an error while executing a remote PowerShell script. From my local machine I am running a PowerShell script that uses Invoke-Command to cd into a directory on a remote Amazon Windows Server instance, and a subsequent Invoke-Command to execute script that lives on that server instance. The script on the server is trying to git clone a repository from GitHub. I can successfully do things in the server script like "ls" or even "git --version". However git clone, git pull, etc. result in the following error: Cloning into 'MyRepo'... + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (Cloning into 'MyRepo'...:String) [], RemoteException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : NativeCommandError This is my first time using PowerShell or a Windows Server. Can anyone provide some direction on this problem. The client script: $s = new-pssession -computername $server -credential $user invoke-command -session $s -scriptblock { cd C:\Repos; ls } invoke-command -session $s -scriptblock { param ($repo, $branch) & '.\clone.ps1' -repository $repo -branch $branch} -ArgumentList $repository, $branch exit-pssession The server script: param([string]$repository = "repository", [string]$branch = "branch") git --version start-process -FilePath git -ArgumentList ("clone", "-b $branch https://github.com/MyGithub/$repository.git") -Wait I've changed the server script to use start process and it is no longer throwing the exception. It creates the new repository directory and the .git directory but doesn't write any of the files from the github repository. This smells like a permissions issue. Once again invoking the script manually (remote desktop into the amazon box and execute it from powershell) works like a charm.

• Can't upgrade MySQL Server on new Ubuntu 12.04 install

  After freshly installing Ubuntu server 12.04, I did the usual apt-get update / apt-get upgrade, which failed for mysql-server-5.5: Setting up mysql-server-5.5 (5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.2) ... start: Job failed to start invoke-rc.d: initscript mysql, action "start" failed. dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.5 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of mysql-server: mysql-server depends on mysql-server-5.5; however: Package mysql-server-5.5 is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing mysql-server (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured I tried a wide variety a approaches suggested by googling, which involved various combinations of apt-get remove/purge/install -f/reinstall, etc., with no luck. I also tried downloading the package directly from launchpad.net and running dpkg -i on it (this had worked for a similar issue with a kernel upgrade), but to no avail. I'm not actually particularly interested in what's going on with mysql, per se (though I will need to figure it out at some time); at this point, my primary concern is that I am unable to apt-get install other packages! What to do?

  I have a OpenVZ VPS running CentOS 6.3 64 bit and when I try to install JRE 7 64bit using the command: rpm -Uvh java.rpm It gives me this error: Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:jre ########################################### [100%] Unpacking JAR files... rt.jar... Error: Could not open input file: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_09/lib/ext/localedata.pack I then tried the command: java -version And it gives me this error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit. Why does this happen if I have more than enough RAM on the VPS to run this (1GB)? Could it be an issue with the host node of the VPS?   Trying to deploy a JSF 2 app with Spring 3.1 + JPA 2 (Hibernte 3.6.8) into JBoss 7.1.1 AS. The app was working fine on tomcat 7. Now, I have already added and changed some configurations. Added jboss-deployment-structure.xml <jboss-deployment-structure xmlns="urn:jboss:deployment-structure:1.1"> <deployment> <exclusions> <module name="org.apache.log4j" /> <module name="javax.faces.api" slot="main"/> <module name="com.sun.jsf-impl" slot="main"/> <module name="org.hibernate"/> <module name="org.javassist" /> <module name="javaee.api" /> <module name="org.hibernate.validator" /> <module name="org.jboss.as.web" /> <module name="org.jboss.logging" /> <module name="javax.persistence.api" /> <module name="org.jboss.interceptor" /> </exclusions> </deployment> </jboss-deployment-structure> 2. I have never tried JBoss before. Any help would be highly appreciated.

• Strong Naming an assembly using command line compile

  I am trying to use NAnt in order to compile and sign an assembly using the vbc compiler. I have a project set up and am able to successfully sign the assembly compiling with VS2010. When I try to sign it using the command line I get this error: vbc : error BC30140: Error creating assembly manifest: Error signing assembly -- The parameter is incorrect. What is the correct way to do this with vbc? --EDIT: I have found that MSBuild also does not like having the AssemblyKeyFile attribute as I have defined it in the AssemblyInfo.vb, it gives the same failure message. So the only way I can currently get this to build correctly is to set properties on the project to tell it which key file to use and to sign the assembly.

  I'm trying to add <session-management> in my Spring Security namespace configuration so that I can provide a different message than the login page when the session times out. As soon as I add it to my configuration it starts throwing "IllegalStateException: Cannot create a session after the response has been committed" when I access the app. I'm using Spring Security 3 and Tomcat 6. • Socket error 10052 on UDP socket

  We have a .NET 2.0 desktop application which sends and receives network packets over UDP. Several users have reported an occasional socket error 10052 which happens when the code calls socket.BeginReceiveFrom on a the UDP socket. What does this mean? The official MS documentation for socket error 10052 says - quote: "WSAENETRESET (10052) Network dropped connection on reset . The connection has been broken due to keep-alive activity detecting a failure while the operation was in progress. It can also be returned by setsockopt if an attempt is made to set SO_KEEPALIVE on a connection that has already failed." This just doesn't make much sense for a UDP socket since UDP is a connectionless protocol. I know that another close error code 10054 in connection with UDP sockets means that an ICMP message "Port Unreachable" was received, and I am wondering if 10052 might map to another ICMP message? I have googled this for months, read network books, etc. but can't find anything. Please help - what does socket error 10052 on a UDP socket mean? Thanks in advance
