  • Improving WPF memory usage

    Hello developers Is there any way you can store the UI state to disk when a WPF form has been minimised. I have a complex GUI with few Tab Controls and it consumes quite a bit of memory which is kept allocated when the application is not active. I was hoping one of you may have got this working along the lines (or similar) Application Active User does work, plays with UI - enters some information in the text boxes and moves around the tabs User minimises the form to work with other applications On Minimise, Save the current state to the disk and dispose the root tabcontrol On Activiate, build the root tabcontrol from the disk and add to the controls collection Before I divein to do this, I thought it will help me if I ask this question here. Please let me know your thoughts

  • How to add ONLY system tray icon to application?

    I am developing an application that will be running behind the scenes in Windows and would like to put an icon in the system tray for troubleshooting purposes (simple way for users to tell if the app is running). There is no other UI for the application, and the icon does not need to have any functionality as of right now. All of the solutions I have found as of yet involve creating a form. I am wondering if there is a way to simply add a class to my current C# code that allows me to control the icon, rather than doing the whole 'make a form, set it to be invisible....' nonsense that seems to be the popular suggestion on the forums. Something along the lines of the way that UI control is done in say, Swing for Java. I would really appreciate any ideas! (Sorry if this is a n00b question...I haven't used C# before...)   • Unable to find assembly, C#

    So, here's the deal. I've got two ASP.NET applications, both of which use SQLServer Session State management. They also both use the same server. I've got a custom session class in an external DLL, which fully implements serialization, and which both applications have referenced. Each application, in turn, has a class which inherits from the DLL class, and both applications use their own respective classes for their session state. Now, what I was trying to accomplish was that if you wanted to go to the other application, it could look in the session (they all use the same session key) and treat the existing object there as the base (the one from the DLL), extract whatever login info you need, then overwrite the session object with your own. Unfortunately, when the second application attempts to read the session, it seems that it looks for the DLL of the first application, and when it can't find it, it throws an exception. Is there a flaw in my logic?   • jquery ajax call errors in chrome onenter with no responseText

    I've built a login page that uses a .ajax call to a generic c# handler (.ashx) to validate the username and password before allowing the user to log in. If you click on the login link <a href="#" class="ui-state-default ui-corner-all CustomButton" onclick="goLogin();return false"> the .ajax call returns successfully and it logs the user in. I am trying to make it so the user can also just press the "enter" key from the password box: $("#pword").keydown(function(e) { if (e.keyCode == 13) { goLogin(); } }); Using Firefox, both ways work just fine and the user is logged in. With Chrome however, pressing "enter" hits the error function of my .ajax call and will not log the user in. The parameters and responses look identical through Firefox's console, as expected. What would be causing this and/or how can I debug it in Chrome?

    It seems the number Datatype handles zeros and nulls the same. I need to display a zero value on the screen, but AS displays nothing. When it's saved, the value is saved as a zero, and therefore shows up zero on the screen. Is there a way to display the zero value using a new object? public class myObject{ private var numVar:Number } My AS file: var temp:MyObject temp.numVar = 0; When I debug, temp.numVar contains a value of 0, but does not show anything on the UI. If this object is then saved to the DB, and then displayed to the UI, it shows a 0. My question is - how do I get temp.numVar to display 0 before persistenting it to the DB?

    I have a c# application that needs to use a legacy win32 dll. The dll is almost its own app, it has dialogs, operations with hardware, etc. When this dll is imported and used, there are a couple of problems that occur: Dragging a dialog (not a windows system dialog, but one created by the dll) across the managed code app causes the UI to not repaint. Further it generates a system out of memory exception from various ui controls. The performance is incredibly slow. There seems to be no way to unload the dll so the memory never gets cleaned up. When we close our managed app, we get another memory exception. It accesses SQLite database a lot. ARC option is enabled. I have many questions to ask: In .h files, I am defining IBOutlets like @property(nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIButton *bt; Where do i need to do bt=nil? in didReceiveMemoryWarning or viewDidLoad Live Bytes in Instruments tool is 4-5MB. Is it enough or I need to reduce memory usage? If so, how can I do so? Please mention few important points.   • Not sure what happens to my apps objects when using NSURLSession in background - what state is my app in?

    More of a general question - I don't understand the workings of NSURLSession when using it in "background session mode". I will supply some simple contrived example code. I have a database which holds objects - such that portions of this data can be uploaded to a remote server. It is important to know which data/objects were uploaded in order to accurately display information to the user. All callbacks that may exist are maintained and the app state is straightforward. But I'm not clear what happens if the app "dies" at some point during the upload. It seems that any callbacks/notifications are dead. According to the API documentation- the uploading is handled by a separate process. Therefor the upload will continue and my app will be awakened at some point in the future to handle completion. But the object "aNewProfilePicture" is non existant at that point and all callbacks/objects are gone. I don't understand what context exists at this point. How am I supposed to ensure consistency in my DB and UI (For instance update the "successfullyUploaded" property for that user)? Do I need to re-work everything touching the DB or UI to correspond with the new API and work in a context free environment?

  • Override onDraw to change how the drawing occurs (Android)

    I want to change how my UI elements display, so I am overriding onDraw. The following code allows me to change a View to be drawn using PorterDuff.Mode.DARKEN. Unfortunately, this method involves creating a bitmap the size of the entire screen, then drawing to it then drawing this large bitmap the main screen again, for each UI element. This isn't at all efficient.     Hi, First of all it is a UI design question! Which is the best design practice for edit data in RIA, for example in Flex or Silverlight? I would like to show customer's details, but there will be an edit window, than the datas of customer will be editable. I would like to show a new form where the data can be edited. What is the simplest way to show this form. I can make my ui tabbed, so I can open the form in a new tab, or I can open the form in a popup/modal dialog (Save-cancel). Maybe I can use in line editing. What is the most user friendly solution in a Silverlight or Flex GUI? What is your opinion? Thanks!

    Say I have an enum something like: enum OrderStatus { AwaitingAuthorization, InProduction, AwaitingDespatch } I've also created an extension method on my enum to tidy up the displayed values in the UI, so I have something like: public static string ToDisplayString(this OrderStatus status) { switch (status) { case Status.AwaitingAuthorization: return "Awaiting Authorization"; case Status.InProduction: return "Item in Production"; ... etc } } Inspired by the excellent post here, I want to bind my enums to a SelectList with an extension method: public static SelectList ToSelectList<TEnum>(this TEnum enumObj) however, to use the DisplayString values in the UI drop down I'd need to add a constraint along the lines of : where TEnum has extension ToDisplayString Obviously none of this is going to work at all with the current approach, unless there's some clever trick I don't know about. Does anyone have any ideas about how I might be able to implement something like this?

  • Java Thread Message Passing

    I'm writing an Android app. I have a main method, which creates and runs a new Thread using an anonymous inner Runnable class. The run() method, when it's done, calls a method on it's parent class (in the main thread) that calls notifyDataSetChanged() so that the main thread can redraw the new data. This is causing all kinds of trouble (ViewRoot$CalledFromWrongThreadException). The thing is, this method being called from the worker thread is on the class that's created in the UI thread. Shouldn't that be running on the UI thread? Or am I missing something?   • What is the best software to write and organize written copy / content for a website?

    I'm a newbie product manager, looking for tips on how to write and organize text copy for my company's website. I need to be able to prepare the content for our public site and turn it over to the web designer who publishes it to our live site. I want our UI team to be able to quickly glance at the copy I write and immediately know where on the page I intend for it to go. Currently, I'm using microsoft word to write and color code different text to signify where I want specific text to go. It is difficult for the UI guy to immediately know if something goes into the nav bar or into a header or a description below a header. In addition to that, it would be helpful for me to be able to write the copy in such a way that the web designer could copy and paste it into the XHTML without having to go back and manually replace special punctuation characters with the XHTML entities. What software is out there that will allow a comprehensive solution to these web copywriting issues?

  • IE div width + scrollbar

    I have a modal UI in my web app that necessitates a fixed layout design. After much fussing, I decided absolutely positioned child elements was the way to go. However, I have one div that conditionally requires a vertical scrollbar (if there's too much content). When this scrollbar is added, the width of the div seems to vary between IE 7 and IE 8. IE8 standards mode: IE7 standards mode: I haven't even tested for IE 6, but I'm sure it's even funkier. What's the simplest, least painful way to address this to arrive at a consistent UI in all major browsers?

    I am creating two way binding between JS Object and UI in below fiddle, code is big to post Please check http://jsfiddle.net/bpH6Z/20/ I am using the code like below var elements = document.querySelectorAll("[" + data_attr + "] *[bd='" + prop_name + "']"); I have mentioned the problem line in big comments, can be identified easily. My problem is I am adding elements to binded dynamicaly using JS, when I change the value in UI, the same value is not reflected in other places. The problem is querySelectorAll is faling to find elements with same attribute. It is finding only first occurrence. Please look into the issue.
