• Is there a definitive reference on Pinball playfield design?

  I'm looking at designing tables for Future Pinball but I'm not sure where to start as I've little background in game design per se. I've played scores of pinball tables over the years so I've a fairly good idea of what is "fun" in those terms. However, I'd like to know if there is a definitive "bible" of pinball design as far as layout and scoring/mode design goes. I've looked but there doesn't seem to be anything really coherent that I could find. Is it simply a lost art or am I missing some buried gem?

• What is the use of commit messages?

  Hi folks, I struggled asking that question but here it is. I am using source control since several years for multiple projects using different systems (svn, hg, git) and I learned how to improve my messages by following guidelines etc. But as far as I can remember I never ever had a look at them afterwards. So ... how do you profit from your own commit messages? When I need to go back because I smashed something and need a fresh start, I usually just go back to the latest "node" (where I started or merged a branch). Do I write those messages just for people monitoring the project who are curious what is going on? Regards

  I would like to ask you for advice more experienced ROR developers. I am new in programming and like to idea of ROR and I am before the decision on which programing language to specialize Java vs ROR. In the future I wish to learn for bigger international IT companies (IBM, Accenture etc.) but as I am reading their job openings, most of them are hiring Java, C++, .NET... Is the ROR used only in startups or also in bigger companies as well? What should be the reasons of their preference of Java over ROR?

We'd also like to have several participants share their deployment stories as well as some time for an free-form unconference format and some team building activity. Of course, beyond all the content shared in slides, this should really also be a good excuse to meet folks from the community and from the core GlassFish team at Oracle. • how do you remove the navigation bar on Android?

  When I listen to a YouTube video fullscreen in landscape on my Galaxy Nexus, the navigation bar on the right disapear after a few seconds (the bar which contains the "back", "home" and "recent apps" buttons ). I want to do the same thing when a user watch a video in my app. What is the code to hide the navigation bar? [UPDATE] Here is the bar I want to hide. Not the title bar, nor the action bar. The navigation bar. (the bar which contains the "back", "home" and "recent apps" buttons ). I also don't want to "dim" the buttons. I'm looking into removing the bar entirely (like the YouTube app does when you plan a video fullscreen in landscape mode)

• Mvc3 IEnumerable<QuestionModel> have a List<QuestionOptionModel> property. When I post, I get null list

I am trying to use this technique in a large form with a list(List) but when I post back, the Viewmodel.Order that should’ve contained list of items and activities return with the lists empty. My QuestionModel.cs like this. public int Id { get; set; } public string QuestionText { get; set; } public System.Nullable<bool> OptionType1 { get; set; } public System.Nullable<bool> OptionType2 { get; set; } public List<QuestionOptionModel> OptionList = new List<QuestionOptionModel>(); When I post back "IEnumerable questions" List OptionList comes null. • Ideal way/architecture to deliver large data over Web Services

  We are trying to design 6 web services, which will serve another client component. The client component requires data from the web service we are implementing. Now, the problem is, there is not 1 WS we are implementing, there is one WS which the client component hits, this initiates a series (5 more) of WSs which gather data from their respective data stores and finally provide the data back to the original WS, which then delivers the data back to the client component. So, if the requested data becomes huge, then, this will be a serious problem for our internal communication channel. So, what do you guys suggest? What can be done to avoid overloading of the communication channel between the internal WS and at the same time, also delivering the data to the client component.

• git repository sync between computers, when moving around?

  Hi Let's say that I have a desktop pc and a laptop, and sometimes I work on the desktop and sometimes I work on the laptop. What is the easiest way to move a git repository back and forth? I want the git repositories to be identical, so that I can continue where I left of at the other computer. I would like to make sure that I have the same branches and tags on both of the computers. Thanks Johan Note: I know how to do this with SubVersion, but I'm curious on how this would work with git. If it is easier, I can use a third pc as classical server that the two pc:s can sync against. Note: Both computers are running Linux. Update: So let's try XANI:s idea with a bare git repo on a server, and the push command syntax from KingCrunch. In this example there is two clients and one server. So let's create the server part first. ssh user@server mkdir -p ~/git_test/workspace cd ~/git_test/workspace git --bare init So then from one of the other computers I try to get a copy of the repo with clone: git clone user@server:~/git_test/workspace/ Initialized empty Git repository in /home/user/git_test/repo1/workspace/.git/ warning: You appear to have cloned an empty repository. Then go into that repo and add a file: cd workspace/ echo "test1" > testfile1.txt git add testfile1.txt git commit testfile1.txt -m "Added file testfile1.txt" git push origin master Now the server is updated with testfile1.txt. Anyway, let's see if we can get this file from the other computer. mkdir -p ~/git_test/repo2 cd ~/git_test/repo2 git clone user@server:~/git_test/workspace/ cd workspace/ git pull And now we can see the testfile. At this point we can edit it with some more content and update the server again. echo "test2" >> testfile1.txt git add testfile1.txt git commit -m "Test2" git push origin master Then we go back to the first client and do a git pull to see the updated file. And now I can move back and forth between the two computers, and add a third if I like to.

• Software Center crashes and terminal errors

  *note*I'm a new user to Ask Ubuntu and I've only recently switched to Ubuntu 12.04. When I try to open the software center (Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit) it will flash open, load for maybe 1-2 seconds, and then close. When i try using: sudo apt-get purge software center sudo apt-get install sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade I get this within the terminal: Reading package lists... Error! E: Problem parsing dependency Depends E: Error occurred while processing printer-driver-hpcups (NewVersion2) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. *The problem fixed itself after I shut down my laptop for the night and turned it back on to check my e-mail this afternoon. If anyone could tell me how to fix this problem in the future please do, I would like to learn about these kind of things because i don't plan on putting windows on my laptop again :P *

• Unfortunately App stopped when destroying SupportMapFragment

  I have the following problem. I have three fragments which are hosted in a TabHost. When I'm working with the app everything works fine. Now I like to end the app when the user hits the back button. Instead of terminating without errors I get the message Unfortunately App stopped. Then I said to myself something is wrong with the onDestroy() method of the FragmentActivity or with the onDestroyView method() of the Fragment. The problem is I cannot debug the point where the app crash. I get only the error:Fatal signal 11 (SIGSEGV). I then removed one by one each Fragment to identify which fragment causes the error. I could identify the fragment that I named BasicMapFragment. Something is wrong there. The code: public class BasicMapFragment extends SupportMapFragment implements LocationListener { @Override public View onCreateView(LayoutInflater inflater, ViewGroup container, Bundle savedInstanceState) { View view = super.onCreateView(inflater, container, savedInstanceState); //removeAllMarkers(); //setupGps(); //setupMap(); //setupMarkersFromModel(); //registerListeners(); return view; } } I commented out all my self written code to isolate the place where the error occurs. @Override public void onDestroy() { Log.d("ch.xxx.fragment.BasiceMapFragment", "On destroy called"); super.onDestroy(); } public void onDestroyView() { Log.d("ch.xxx.fragment.BasiceMapFragment", "On destroy view called"); super.onDestroyView(); } When I press the back button now the onDestroy() method of my FragmentActivity is first called like expected. Then the onDestroyView method is called on my BasicMapFragment class. At the end the onDestroy method is called - and then the application crash. • C input loop for shell

  So I'm working on creating a very simple C program that just preforms shell commands. This is what I have so far: #include <stdio.h> int main() { char input[30]; fputs("$ ", stdout); fflush(stdout); fgets(input, sizeof input, stdin); system(input); } It works, but only for one command. For example if I compile and type ./cmd I get the $ prompt. If I type ls I get what I'm supposed to get. But then it exits and goes back to the regular system shell. How can I make it so after the user types a command it goes back to the "$" input.

• Intent flags to Login page redirect, killing previous Activities

  Basically I have a Service that at some points it will sync with the network in order to check if the token is still valid. if it isn't, it should redirect to the login screen (from the service) and if the user press the back button, it should NOT show the previous Activity but instead exit the app. I'm not asking how to hack onBackPressed, I already know how to do it. I'm asking how to accomplish this using the intent flags. So far I have tried the following: intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP | Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); Using the FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK is mandatory because I'm calling startActivity() from a service (or at least thrown exception told me so), and using FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP cause it was supposed to remove all previous activities from the stack, leaving only the new one. The issue is if I press back, I am still able to go to the previous Activity, which makes me think the combination of both flags are clearing the activities in the NEW task, not in the previous one I might be wrong on the reason, but it doesn't work. Any help will be appreciated, thanks

  I have a BroadcastReceiver which loads data from the Internet and then it should send them back to a Widget. But how can I do this?   This is the obligatory first posting in which I describe to you my plans for this blog and why you should read it. My plan is very simple – to share with you (and possibly myself along the way) relevant information about tools and techniques that you can use (or perhaps shouldn’t use) to solve problems with code. Most of my employers have paid me to develop solutions using Microsoft tools and technologies, so you will see them heavily represented here. I also plan to avoid having this blog function simply as a link aggregator, so I promise that it will be rare for you to find entries in my blog consisting solely of a link to someone else’s blog or a webcast – if I do have such links they will at least be accompanied by commentary. • Dynamic added elements double effect after page transition

  I have added dynamic from jQuery in my code, but when I go back one page and return to the page where the 's are added and you press them, they somehow click twice now. I have tried with an alert('something'); when I click: $(document).on('click', '#products a', function() { alert('something'); } And it's shown twice when you return to the page. I have tried $('#products a').remove(); When you click the 'Back' button, because I thought all elements where added twice, but that made no difference. I don't have anything around these lines, maybe I need $(document).ready(); or something with pageinit?

• How do I use SPMemember.ID property to get User or Group

  I have to write a utility to enumerate and manage the owners of groups within a SharePoint site. I know I can use the Groups property of the SPWeb object to retrieve a collection of groups. And I know I can use the Owner property of the group to get back the owner. My problem is that I do not know what to do next. The SPGroup.Owner property returns a SPMember object. The member object has one property called ID that returns the unique ID (an integer) of the member. What I cannot seem to find information on is how to use that integer value to determine if the member is a User or a Group and how to get back additional details (say the name). Any ideas? Thanks.

• imageview draw issue with asynctask

  Have the following asynctask that i'm using to download some images. Works fine except for the very first image, which doesn't always appears unless I do something like move to the next image and then back again. public class DownloadImageTask extends AsyncTask { static ImageView _imageView=null; public DownloadImageTask(ImageView ctl){ _imageView=ctl; } protected void onPostExecute(Bitmap result) { _imageView.setImageBitmap(result); } ... } I thought this might be an issue with updating the UI on a background thread, so I reworked this using an abstract class that invokes a method on the UI thread that calls .setImageBitmap() but I still get the same behaviour - works fine for all images except the first, unless I move to the next image and back again. Is there a way to force a redraw on the imageview after i set the image?

• Repeating characters in VIM insert mode

  Is there a way of repeating a character while in Vim's insert mode? For example, say I would like to insert 80 dashes, in something like emacs I would type: Ctrl+U 8 0 - The only way I know how to do it in VIM is to exit normal mode for the repeat argument, then go back into insert mode to type the dash, then exit to insert the actual dashes, AND then go back into insert mode to carry on typing. The sequence is a really long: <ESC> 8 0 a - <ESC> a It would be nice not to switch in and out of modes. Thanks

• Dell monitor not detected (Ubuntu 11.10)

  I have an issue with my monitor. I just installed Ubuntu 11.10, but the monitor that is plugged in doesn't appear anywhere. And by doesn't appear, I mean that in the "Displays" menu, it doesn't even appear as "Unknown", I just have my screen that appears and nothing else. It is connected through VGA, and the monitor is recognized with no problem on Windows 7. It is a Dell monitor. I'm not a pro with Ubuntu, so any help to diagnose the issue would be really helpful (and help me learn how to fix this kind of monitor issue in the future) Thanks !

• Git: How do I rewind the Master branch on the remote origin

  I made 5 commits to Master branch when bug hunting on a private project and pushed them to the remote origin (my own private vps). Then I saw that commits 4 and 5 were going to cause trouble elsewhere and I need to undo them, so I checked out commit 3 again, made a new branch "Dev" from that point, and did a few more commits fixing the issue properly. Then I did git reset --hard HEAD~2 on Master to pull it back to the point that I branched Dev. Then I did git merge to fast forward Master back to the end of the Dev branch. So now I have a local repository, with Dev and Master both pointing to the same, up to date version of the project with the latest bug fix. Problem is, when I try to push the project now to the origin, it fails and gives me an error message: ! [rejected] master - master (non-fast forward) error: failed to push some refs to 'myserver...myproject.git' What have I done wrong, and how do I fix it? Thanks

• Is it stable to change I/O direction on microcontroller repeatedly?

  I'm new to microcontroller programming and I have interfaced my microcontroller board to another device that provides a status based on the command send to it but, this status is provided on the same I/O pin that is used to provide data. So basically, I have an 8-bit data line that is used as an output from the microcontroller, but for certain commands I get a status back on one of the data lines if I choose to read it. So I would be required to change the direction of this one line to read the status thus converting this line as an ouput to an input and then back to an output. Is this acceptable programming or will this changing of the I/O pin this frequently cause instability? Thanks.

• How to redirect on apache after running a script through cgi

  I have an ubuntu machine which I have installed apache on. I want to use a web page to run some simple shell script through cgi and then go back to my home screen. I also want to the go-back step to be automatic. I have set a redirect in my apache.conf which works fine but the script doesn't run at all. Is there a way to run the script and only then apply the redirect? Comment: I think this may be the answer but I'm not sure.

• How to identify deadlock conditions in a third-party application?

  I am using a third-party application to handle batch CD audio extraction via multiple FireWire attached devices, but the application frequently (though non-deterministically) hangs during the extraction. I suspect that the multithreaded application is deadlocking over some shared resource. The developer, however, suspects the problem lies elsewhere but is not addressing the problem at this time. I would like to be able to do some legwork on my end to a) prove the condition exists and b) ideally point him in the right direction. The problems: while I used to be a programmer, it's been awhile and I need to shake off the dust (last work I did was back in '99 and it was under Solaris, while the application runs under XP). Rather than there being a dearth of information online, there's almost too much to digest. Are there any suggested guides or tutorials that might help me get back up to speed sufficient enough to help identify and/or diagnose the deadlock, or are there tools or approaches that I should study up on to aid me in my task? • jboss web services to tranfer files

  I dont have any experience for web services. please give me some suggestion about the task below. the task is: users will send a txt file (size should less than 20K ) from a .NET application, I need to write a web services which runs by jboss 5.x to read this file and edit this file and send the file back to .NET UI to display the edited version. question is that if the txt file is just test string or binary string, are there any restriction of the string length? if it's binary string, can I need to use BinaryReader class to read it? or not need special reader to read it? (this could be a dumn question :P) what if the .NET application can save the file on either the .NET application server or some shared server location, send a download URL to web serivces, can web services download it and read it? JBoss will be run on Linux sever. After edit the file, how do I send it back? Thanks for your help!
