  • Random record in ActiveRecord

    I'm in need of getting a random record from a table via ActiveRecord. I've followed the example from Jamis Buck from 2006. However, I've also come across another way via a Google search (can't attribute with a link due to new user restrictions): rand_id = rand(Model.count) rand_record = Model.first(:conditions => [ "id >= ?", rand_id]) I'm curious how others on here have done it or if anyone knows what way would be more efficient.

    I have a form. I am trying to validate it through AJAX GET requests. So i am trying to send the field values in the GET request data. $('#uxMyForm').serialize(); the problem it is returning something undecipherable. I have used serialize before. This is totally bizzare. the return value of serialize is authenticity_token=oRKIDOlPRqfnRehedcRRD7WXt6%2FQ0zLeQqwIahJZJfE%3D&customer%5BuxName%5D=&customer%5BuxEmail%5D=&customer%5BuxResidentialPhone%5D=&customer%5BuxMobilePhone%5D=&customer%5BuxDateOfBirth%5D=&customer%5BuxAddress%5D=&customer%5BuxResidentialStatus%5D= i have no idea how to use this. Right now when I click the "Finish" button, facebook permissions dialogue is initiated but before I am prompted for the actual permission submission window, the browser freezes. Just like I have pressed Esc during the process. In fact status bar of the browser says "Stopped". Any help is highly appreciated.

  • Escape doube and single backslashes in a string in Ruby

    Hello. I'm trying to access a network path in my ruby script on a windows platform in a format like this. \\servername\some windows share\folder 1\folder2\ Now If I try to use this as a path, it won't work. Single backslashes are not properly escaped for this script. path = "\\servername\some windows share\folder 1\folder2\" d = Dir.new(path) I tried everything I could think of to properly escape slashes in the path. However I can't escape that single backslash - because of it's special meaning. I tried single quotes, double quotes, escaping backslash itself, using alternate quotes such as %Q{} or %q{}, using ascii to char conversion. Nothing works in a sense that I'm not doing it right. :-) Right now the temp solution is to Map a network drive N:\ pointing to that path and access it that way, but that not a solution. Does anyone have any idea how to properly escape single backslashes? Thank you

What's the best way to do this? How do I include the capistrano thinking sphinx tasks in my deploy.rb file when using the gem? The Kind can belong to many Items. but i get a "unknown attribute: kinds" in my OrdersController when i hit the submit form button. I use nested forms btw.     Hi, I am running a query using a scope and some conditions. Something like this: conditions[:offset] = (options[:page].to_i - 1) * PAGE_SIZE unless options[:page].blank? conditions[:limit] = options[:limit] ||= PAGE_SIZE scope = Promo.enabled.active results = scope.all conditions I'd like to add a computed column to the query (at the point when I'm now calling scope.all). Something like this: (ACOS(least(1,COS(0.71106459055501)*COS(-1.2915436464758)*COS(RADIANS(addresses.lat))*COS(RADIANS(addresses.lng))+ COS(0.71106459055501)*SIN(-1.2915436464758)*COS(RADIANS(addresses.lat))*SIN(RADIANS(addresses.lng))+ SIN(0.71106459055501)*SIN(RADIANS(addresses.lat))))*3963.19) as accurate_distance Is there a way to do that without just using find_by_sql and rewriting the whole existing query?     I have just started with CanCan and here's a sample of the code: # Ability.rb def initialize(user) user ||= User.new can :read, Link end # view.html.erb <% if can? :read, @link %> ... <% end %> This is from the github repo for CanCan but this doesn't seem to work (it returns false and stops the ... code from running). When I change the view to <% if can? :read, Link %>, it works. But, this is different to the CanCan readme. Do you know where I'm going wrong here?

So if someone looks up the leads by company they can see all leads across all events, but also see all leads by event. Not sure if this is ownership versus a where?     I have this in lib/tasks/foo.rake: Rake::Task["assets:precompile"].enhance do print ">>>>>>>> hello from precompile" end Rake::Task["assets:precompile:nondigest"].enhance do print ">>>>>>>> hello from precompile:nondigest" end When I run rake assets:precompile locally, both messages are printed. When I push to heroku, only the nondigest message is printed. However, according to the buildpack, the push is executing the exact same command as I am locally. Why does the enhancement to the base assets:precompile case not work on heroku but does work locally?

  • How to always return a set number of records when using find_related_tags with acts-as-taggable-on

    I'm using the acts-as-taggable-on gem and I need to use find_related_tags on my survey model to get back 3 surveys every time. In the event there aren't always 3 related I need to pick how ever many are related plus some random ones to get to 3. Additionally I have a method I wrote called completed_survey_ids which return an array of survey_ids that shouldn't be used because the user has already completed them. Also there is a rare case that there won't be enough surveys because the user has completed them all so in that event it is okay to return less surveys then requested. I did write a named_scope to handle getting rid of the completed_survey_ids that I think works named_scope :not, lambda { |survey_ids| {:conditions => "id NOT IN (#{survey_ids.join(',')})" } }

    I'd like to call an action with a link_to button without being redirected to another page(I don't want ajax). For you to have an idea, I'm trying to accomplish a sort "link button" in a search page. So, when the link is clicked, the page should be refreshed showing the list ordered as I tell it in the action.   • are fixtures loaded when using the sql dump to create a test database

    Because of some non standard table creation options I am forced to use the sql dump instead of the standard schema.rb (i.e. I have uncommented this line in the environment.rb config.active_record.schema_format = :sql). I have noticed that when I use the sql dump that my fixtures do not seem to be loaded into the database. Some data is loaded into it but, I am not sure where it is coming from. Is this normal? and if it is normal can anybody tell me where this other data is coming from?
