• How to handle growing QA reporting requirements?

  Some Background: Our company is growing very quickly - in 3 years we've tripled in size and there are no signs of stopping any time soon. Our marketing department has expanded and our IT requirements have as well. When I first arrived everything was managed in Dreamweaver and Excel spreadsheets and we've worked hard to implement bug tracking, version control, continuous integration, and multi-stage deployment. It's been a long hard road, and now we need to get more organized. The Problem at Hand: Management would like to track, per-developer, who is generating the most issues at the QA stage (post unit testing, regression, and post-production issues specifically). This becomes a fine balance because many issues can't be reported granularly (e.g. per-url or per-"page") but yet that's how Management would like reporting to be broken down. Further, severity has to be taken into account. We have drafted standards for each of these areas specific to our environment. Developers don't want to be nicked for 100+ instances of an issue if it was a problem with an include or inheritance... I had a suggestion to "score" bugs based on severity... but nobody likes that. We can't enter issues for every individual module affected by a global issue. [UPDATED] The Actual Questions: How do medium sized businesses and code shops handle bug tracking, reporting, and providing useful metrics to management? What kinds of KPIs are better metrics for employee performance? What is the most common way to provide per-developer reporting as far as time-to-close, reopens, etc.? Do large enterprises ignore the efforts of the individuals and rather focus on the team? Some other questions: Is this too granular of reporting? Is this considered 'blame culture'? If you were the developer working in this environment, what would you define as a measureable goal for this year to track your progress, with the reward of achieving the goal a bonus?

• Ubuntu 13.10 installed and worked, but now not working

  I have a HP G7000 laptop. I updated/upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10, after the software updater recommended I upgrade. I have duel booting system with Windows Vista. The system was working for the past two days, but I start getting the errors below, after selecting Ubuntu in Grub Menu on startup and at the splash screen it says "Press S to Skip or M for manual configuration" Pressing S gives a black screen and m takes you the errors below. Windows boots and works fine after selection in the Grub Menu. [ 15.235703] EXT3-fs (sda5): error: unrecognized mount option "discard" or missing value. Why is it that the installation on the hard disk has stopped working and does not recognize my / ? What do the above errors mean and how can i solve them? There was no power failure before, during or after the update/upgrade process from 13.04 to 13.10. I now would like to go back to 13.04 without reinstalling afresh? Any help will be appreciated. • Laptop drains of quickly with battery

  I am a user since years in ubuntu and I have not come across this problem with ubuntu till date. My battery drains off immediately after I unplug my AC power. The options I tried: 1) checked the battery state with : cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state present: yes capacity state: ok charging state: charged present rate: 0 mA remaining capacity: 392 mAh present voltage: 12476 mV Initially it was showing charging state: charging after 5mins it started displaying as charged. ! Based on that if I remove my AC Power it shows low battery notification. 2) When I run acpi : acpi -b Battery 0: Unknown, 9% The battery state shows as unknown. But initially when we plug-in to AC adapter acpi -b Battery 0: Charging, 9%, 13:04:00 until charged 3) When the check the same with : upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0 native-path: /sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0A08:00/device:02/PNP0C09:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0 vendor: HP power supply: yes updated: Thu Nov 1 16:06:40 2012 (20 seconds ago) has history: yes has statistics: yes battery present: yes rechargeable: yes state: charging energy: 4.2336 Wh energy-empty: 0 Wh energy-full: 33.1128 Wh energy-full-design: 33.1128 Wh energy-rate: 5.6052 W voltage: 12.474 V time to full: 5.2 hours percentage: 12.7854% capacity: 100% technology: lithium-ion Is the power stats output, It says 5hrs to charge completely, If I charge it even more than 5hrs and unplug the AC power, It again cribs stating LOW BATTERY !! The same thing does not happen with Windows7. Any suggestions/ help will be greatly appreciated.

• How do I install windows wireless driver for TP-Link TL-WN7200ND

  I'm using the TP-Link TL-WN7200ND USB wireless adapter. I have downloaded the Windows drivers and updated Ubuntu to 10.10 by manually connecting the computer to the router. I also installed ndiswrapper-gtk. I get a Windows Wireless Drivers in my Administration menu, and I was able to get it to read the Windows 7 .inf file. The .inf for XP does not work. It adds it and the driver appears in the list with "Hardware: present". I set up the wireless connection information (ESSID and WPA2-Personal key). Problem: I don't see the network manager icon in the top right of the screen. I managed to manually start it manually using sudo services network-manager restart but it shows no connections in the menu, saying that there's nothing to manage. In my /etc/network/interfaces file I have an entry for the loopback and the standard two-liner for eth0 with dhcp. From memory, something like: iface eth0 auto eth0 dhcp I had read somewhere that 10.10 would have standard support for my wireless adapter (TL-WN7200ND) but that seems not to be the case. However, I don't ever remember having the network-manager icon in the top-right and it does not auto-start at the moment. This was originally an Ubuntu 9.10 install that I've upgraded over time. I also used to use pppoeconf to connect to the net, which might affect the /etc/network/interfaces file?

• Java SE 7u10: Enhanced Security Features and Support for New Platforms

  On December 11, 2012 Oracle released Java SE 7 Update 10 (Java SE 7u10). This release includes enhanced security features and support for new platforms. Enhanced Security Features The JDK 7u10 release includes the following security enhancements: The ability to disable any Java application from running in the browser. This mode can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. The ability to select the desired level of security for unsigned applets, Java Web Start applications, and embedded JavaFX applications that run in a browser. Four levels of security are supported. This feature can be set in the Java Control Panel or (on Microsoft Windows platform only) using a command-line install argument. New dialogs to warn you when the JRE is insecure (either expired or below the security baseline) and needs to be updated. • Oracle VM 3: New Patch Set! (or Mega Millions winner?...you decide!..)

  Today, my favorite number is 14736185 (despite the fact that it did not win me $249million in the MegaMillions lottery...or did it?)!  Why?  Because it is our latest patch release and it is chock-full of good stuff for the Oracle VM 3.0 user.  Oracle VM support customers can find it on My Oracle Support as patch number 14736185.   This can be installed on Oracle VM 3.0.x systems as an incremental patch on top of 3.0.3, so if you previously ran 3.0.3 GA or updated to 3.0.3 patch 1 ( build 150) this will just apply on top.  We're recommending you update to this patch set at your earliest convenience.  For more details, see below but also see Wim Coekaert's blog with related info here.   I deploy apps via ClickOnce. After each deployment we have to review the changes made and send out an email to the users with the changes. What I decided now to do is to use CodebaseHQ’s API to access a project’s SVN repository and display the commit notes so some users who download new updates can check what was changed or updated in an app. This saves a heck of a lot of time, especially when your apps are in beta and you are making several changes daily based on feedback. • Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

  My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification. • Configuration Manager Setting Causing Error PRJ0019

  Recently I ran into an issue with a project failing to build on an automated build server using CruiseControl. When I looked into the build log I saw that the Post-Build project was failing with the error message: "error PRJ0019: A tool returned an error code from "Performing Post-Build Event..." This was most frustrating especially since the solution was building without issue on my local development environment. The Post-Build project was a C++ project that basically called several batch files to unregister/register assemblies, copy resources and supporting files, and place other dependencies in the GAC. I decided to run each of the batch files manually to see if that would provide more information as to why this project was failing. This lead me to determine that the batch file that was placing assemblies in the GAC was the culprit and that it was failing to find a particular assembly. The missing assembly was the output of another project. The project that was not producing the expected output was another C++ project that called a batch file. This batch process was actually embedding resource files into an assembly and then copying the assembly to the expected location. The real confusion started when I looked back into my Subversion log and noted that nothing had changed in this project in more than 2 months! It was almost as if the project had stopped building altogether. But what would cause that?! The Configuration Manager, obviously! Checking the solution's Configuration Manager settings, I found that the project that was not producing any output was in fact not selected to be part of the build process when the "Any CPU" platform was selected. This was the problem! I had recently updated the CruiseControl configurations to force the solution to be built targeting the platform "Any CPU". As a result, the project that was at the root of the problem was not configured to be built and the post-build process was failing when it couldn't find what it needed.

Updated, user-oriented and business information balanced navigational categories. Say hello to the new categories: Downloads, Education and Oracle Technology Network. Oracle Partner Network navigation received a facelift too. 2. Brand new flyout based navigation - mouse over Partners for instance - providing both a high level content overview as well as shortcut links for most popular website destinations 3. Introducing audience based - I'm a... - and - I want to... - task-based navigation. Now you can navigate based on who you are or what is you want to accomplish. Please note this is an initial step - we want to build out those based on your opinions and feedback. 4. Adjusted Oracle Technology Network horizontal navigation to match Oracle.com. • Disallow all user agents except one using .htaccess?

  I've been struggling to get this .htaccess working. The aim is to disallow all user agents besides my app. The app sends a GET request with a user agent of lets say 'AcmeUpdater'. Whenever I try to navigate to any file in the folder, I get a 500 - Internal Server Error. Here are the rules I'm using: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^KMUpdaterClient* RewriteRule .* - [F,L] </IfModule> I have updated the .htaccess file as suggested in the answer by Nick, and restarted Apache. After trying a couple of different things, it seems that just the presence of a .htaccess is causing the 500 error. I'm getting nothing in the error logs. The .htaccess file at the document root looks like the following: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options +FollowSymLinks ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?error=404 RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d </IfModule> So I realised that the error logs were in chronological order rather than the reverse chronological I expected (Oops!). The error I'm getting is: </IfModule> without matching <IfModule> section. I removed the </IfModule> and still I get that error. Ideas?

• Can't customize the application switcher

  I'm trying to change the shortcut for switching applications from Alt+Tab to Ctrl+Tab, but changes in the System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Navigation are being ignored. Even if I disable the Switch applications shortcut entirely, it still maps to Alt+Tab. At one point I had some keys remapped with xmodmap, but since then I have deleted that configuration and rebooted. My keyboard layout settings are all defaults. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04, with all software updated this afternoon. It would also be nice to have the variation of application switching that includes one icon per window, instead of one icon per application, since I am frequently switching between windows of an application and would rather not wait for the switcher to realize I want a different window of the current application. My other Ubuntu 12.04 install has the application switcher that I like, but I'm not sure how to choose between them on this install (which was set up by my university department). New in V3 RTM The following features have been added after V3 alpha3: Project template for the Windows Phone 7 series (Silverlight) This new template allows you to create a new MVVM Light application in Visual Studio 2010 RC and to run it in the Windows Phone 7 series emulator. This template uses the Silverlight 3 version of the MVVM Light Toolkit V3. At this time, only the essentials features of the GalaSoft.MvvmLight.dll assembly are supported on the phone. New in V3 alpha3 The following features have been added after V3 alpha2: New logo An awesome logo has been designed for MVVM Light by Philippe Schutz. DispatcherHelper class (in GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Extras.dll) This class is useful when you work on multi-threaded WPF or Silverlight applications. Initializing: The DispatcherHelper class must be initialized in the UI thread. For example, you can initialize the class in a Silverlight application’s Application_Startup event handler, or in the WPF application’s static App constructor (in App.xaml). // Initializing in Silverlight (in App.xaml) private void Application_Startup( object sender, StartupEventArgs e) { RootVisual = new MainPage(); DispatcherHelper.Initialize(); } // Initializing in WPF (in App.xaml) static App() { DispatcherHelper.Initialize(); } Verifying if a property exists The ViewModelBase.RaisePropertyChanged method now checks if a given property name exists on the ViewModel class, and throws an exception if that property cannot be found. This is useful to detect typos in a property name, for example during a refactoring. Note that the check is only done in DEBUG mode. Replacing IDisposable with ICleanup The IDisposable implementation in the ViewModelBase class has been marked obsolete. Instead, the ICleanup interface (and its Cleanup method) has been added. Implementing IDisposable in a ViewModel is still possible, but must be done explicitly. IDisposable in ViewModelBase was a bad practice, because it supposes that the ViewModel is garbage collected after Dispose is called. instead, the Cleanup method does not have such expectation. The ViewModelLocator class (created when an MVVM Light project template is used in Visual Studio or Expression Blend) exposes a static Cleanup method, which should in turn call each ViewModel’s Cleanup method. The ViewModel is free to override the Cleanup method if local cleanup must be performed. Passing EventArgs to command with EventToCommand The EventToCommand class is used to bind any event to an ICommand (typically on the ViewModel). In this case, it can be useful to pass the event’s EventArgs parameter to the command in the ViewModel. For example, for the MouseEnter event, you can pass the MouseEventArgs to a RelayCommand<MouseEventArgs> as shown in the next listings. Note: Bringing UI specific classes (such as EventArgs) into the ViewModel reduces the testability of the ViewModel, and thus should be used with care. Setting EventToCommand and PassEventArgsToCommand: <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <i:Interaction.Triggers> <i:EventTrigger EventName="MouseEnter"> <cmd:EventToCommand Command="{Binding MyCommand}" PassEventArgsToCommand="True" /> </i:EventTrigger> </i:Interaction.Triggers> </Grid> Getting the EventArgs in the command public RelayCommand<MouseEventArgs> MyCommand { get; private set; } public MainViewModel() { MyCommand = new RelayCommand<MouseEventArgs>(e => { // e is of type MouseEventArgs }); } Changes to templates Various changes have been made to project templates and item templates to make them more compatible with Silverlight 4 and to improve their visibility in Visual Studio and Expression Blend. Bug corrections When a message is sent through the Messenger class using the method Messenger.Default.Send<T>(T message, object token), and the token is a simple value (for example int), the message was not sent correctly. This bug is now corrected. New in V3 The following features have been added after V2. Sending messages with callback Certain classes have been added to the GalaSoft.MvvmLight.Messaging namespace, allowing sending a message and getting a callback from the recipient. These classes are: NotificationMessageWithCallback: Base class for messages with callback. NotificationMessageAction: A class with string notification, and a parameterless callback. NotificationMessageAction<T>: A class with string notification, and a callback with a parameter of type T. To send a message with callback, use the following code: var message = new NotificationMessageAction<bool>( "Hello world", callbackMessage => { // This is the callback code if (callbackMessage) { // ... } }); Messenger.Default.Send(message); To register and receive a message with callback, use the following code: Messenger.Default.Register<NotificationMessageAction<bool>>( this, message => { // Do something // Execute the callback message.Execute(true); }); Messenger.Default can be overriden The Messenger.Default property can also be replaced, for example for unit testing purposes, by using the Messenger.OverrideDefault method. All the public methods of the Messenger class have been made virtual, and can be overridden in the test messenger class. Sending messages to interfaces In V2, it was possible to deliver messages targeted to instances of a given class. in V3 it is still possible, but in addition you can deliver a message to instances that implement a certain interface. The message will not be delivered to other recipients. Use the overload Messenger.Default.Send<TMessage, TTarget>(TMessage message) where TTarget is, in fact, an interface (for example IDisposable). Of course the recipient must register to receive the type of message TMessage. Sending messages with a token Messages can now be sent through the Messenger with a token. To send a message with token, use the method overload Send<TMessage>(TMessage message, object token). To receive a message with token, use the methods Register<TMessage>(object recipient, object token, Action<TMessage> action) or Register<TMessage>(object recipient, object token, bool receiveDerivedMessagesToo, Action<TMessage> action) The token can be a simple value (int, string, etc…) or an instance of a class. The message is not delivered to recipients who registered with a different token, or with no token at all. Renaming CommandMessage to NotificationMessage To avoid confusion with ICommand and RelayCommand, the CommandMessage class has been renamed to NotificationMessage. This message class can be used to deliver a notification (of type string) to a recipient. ViewModelBase constructor with IMessenger The ViewModelBase class now accepts an IMessenger parameter. If this constructor is used instead of the default empty constructor, the IMessenger passed as parameter will be used to broadcast a PropertyChangedMessage when the method RaisePropertyChanged<T>(string propertyName, T oldValue, T newValue, bool broadcast) is used. In the default ViewModelBase constructor is used, the Messenger.Default instance will be used instead. EventToCommand behavior The EventToCommand behavior has been added in V3. It can be used to bind any event of any FrameworkElement to any ICommand (for example a RelayCommand located in the ViewModel). More information about the EventToCommand behavior can be found here and here. Updated the project templates to remove the sample application The project template has been updated to remove the sample application that was created every time that a new MVVM Light application was created in Visual Studio or Blend. This makes the creation of a new application easier, because you don’t need to remove code before you can start writing code. Bug corrections Some bugs that were in Version 2 have been corrected: In some occasions, an exception could be thrown when a recipient was registered for a message at the same time as a message was received. New names for DLLs If you upgrade an existing installation, you will need to change the reference to the DLLs in C:\Program Files\Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft)\Mvvm Light Toolkit\Binaries. The assemblies have been moved, and the versions for Silverlight 4 and for WPF4 have been renamed, to avoid some confusion. It is now easier to make sure that you are using the correct DLL. • Checking All Checkboxes in a GridView Using jQuery

  In May 2006 I wrote two articles that showed how to add a column of checkboxes to a GridView and offer the ability for users to check (or uncheck) all checkboxes in the column with a single click of the mouse. The first article, Checking All CheckBoxes in a GridView, showed how to add "Check All" and "Uncheck All" buttons to the page above the GridView that, when clicked, checked or unchecked all of the checkboxes. The second article, Checking All CheckBoxes in a GridView Using Client-Side Script and a Check All CheckBox, detailed how to add a checkbox to the checkbox column in the grid's header row that would check or uncheck all checkboxes in the column. Both articles showed how to implement such functionality on the client-side, thereby removing the need for a postback. The JavaScript presented in these two previous articles still works, but the techniques used are a bit antiquated and hamfisted given the advances made in JavaScript programming over the past few years. For instance, the script presented in the previous articles uses server-side code in the GridView's DataBound event handler to assign a client-side onclick event handler to each checkbox. While this works, it violates the tenets of unobtrusive JavaScript, which is a design guideline for JavaScript programming that encourages a clean separation of functionality from presentation. (Ideally, event handlers for HTML elements are defined in script.) Also, the quantity of JavaScript used in the two previous articles is quite hefty compared to the amount of code that would be needed using modern JavaScript libraries like jQuery. This article presents updated JavaScript for checking (and unchecking) all checkboxes within a GridView. The two examples from the previous articles - checking/unchecking all checkboxes using a button and checking/unchecking all checkboxes using a checkbox in the header row - are reimplemented here using jQuery and unobtrusive JavaScript techniques. • Installing all the bits to demo Entity Framework 4 on the Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate

  Next week (17th March 2010) I am presenting on EF4 at www.devweek.com in London (and Azure on the 18th). Today I wanted to get all the latest bits on my demo machine and also check if there are any cool new resources I can point people at. Whilst most of the new improvements in Entity Framework come with the Visual Studio 2010 RC (and the RTM), there are a couple of separate items you need to install if you want to explore all the features. To demo EF4 you need: Visual Studio 2010 RC Download and install the Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate. In my case I went from the Ultimate Edition but it will work fine on Premium and Professional. POCO Templates See the team blog post for a detailed explanation. Use the Extension Manager inside Visual Studio 2010: And install the updated POCO templates for either C# or VB (or both if you are so inclined!): Code First Next you will also need to install Code First (formally called Code Only). This is part of the Entity Framework Feature CTP 3. See the team blog post for a detailed explanation. Download the CTP from Microsoft downloads and run the setup.
