• Would it be smarter to setup a Linux development server at home, or to use a hosted server?

  I am in the process of learning as much as I can about LAMP. I was wondering if I should set a web server on my home network, or use a service like Rackspace (cloud space)? I need to have root access, to be able to access it remotely via SSH/FTP/HTTP, and to be able to install things like subversion, etc. I currently have Comcast so I have plenty of bandwidth, but I am not sure if this would violate the TOS, and/or compromise the security of my home network. Pricing for these cloud hosts, seems reasonable ($11 per month plus about $0.10 per GB of bandwidth), but I am not sure if I will have to control I am looking for.

  I've got a little problem using WPF Dispatcher Timer. On each timer tick my application freezes for a moment (until timer tick method finishes). This is my code: private DispatcherTimer _Timer = new DispatcherTimer(); _Timer.Tick += new EventHandler(_DoLoop); _Timer.Interval = TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(1500); _Timer.Start(); Is there any way to avoid this and have my application run smoothly?

  I'm looking for a free visual editor for a language that would compile to native windows exe, no runtime. I'm looking for alternatives to the Delphi suite (so don't give it as an answer), something that would allow me to write Windows GUI applications with ease. I don't care about the language, as long as it gets the job done, but I would appreciate if your suggestions avoid functional languages. Even better if it abstracts the windowing system with something more simple than the winAPI.

  I have a RESX resource file that I can retrieve the values out of using the strongly typed properties and assign to values in my Silverlight 3 app. However at runtime I need to generate the lookup key based on some values to avoid a ton of if/switch statements. • Save simple data in Magento's DB w/o Model

  I'm looking to save some data in the Magento database without hassling with creating a new EAV object (or even a DB table if I can avoid it). Is there any place that you all know about that Magento will let you store serialized data? If it matters, the data is a serialized set of SKUs that I need to retrieve.   I'm completely new to the world of Xcode. Since my MacBook is too old for installing the newest Xcode version, I'm trying to learn with Xcode 3.2.6. Now I go through a book for learning Objective C with Xcode and I have problems to find several buttons. I already needed to let the green "Run"-button view manually via "customize toolbar", but the buttons to have access to the log navigator still do not appear and I don't know how to do it.   I'm hashing a large number of files, and to avoid hash collisions, I'm also storing a file's original size - that way, even if there's a hash collision, it's extremely unlikely that the file sizes will also be identical. Is this sound (a hash collision is equally likely to be of any size), or do I need another piece of information (if a collision is more likely to also be the same length as the original). Or, more generally: Is every file just as likely to produce a particular hash, regardless of original file size?

  Hi all, I recently downloaded the Windows API code pack for .net, and seeing there was VB.net examples inside there, I opened them up. Upon building I get a warning that the referenced components 'Core' and 'Shell' could not be found. Looking in the code pack folder I see there are no DLLs at all, but instead a whole load of C# sources. Do I have to download C# Express (which I want to avoid) to use the code pack or are there precompiled DLLs somewhere?
