  • Would Mercurial help me work from 2 PCs?

    I currently use Perforce for source control, but want to start working on the code from 2 different PCs at the same time (desktop and laptop). The laptop would not be able to access the perforce server very often, which makes Perforce a poor choice in this setup. Distributed source control tools like Mercurial seem better suited to the task, but I am still not clear if this would work or not. Does anyone have any experience of using Mercurial to work on 2 machines at once (eg desktop in the week, laptop in evening and weekends). Does it help, or is it still a pain the butt keeping everything in sync and knowing what is going on.

  • Developing Qt applications in Unix systems using Qt Creator

    I'm developing a Qt application in Linux using Qt Creator (2.1 RC). I've created 2 projects, and used the wizard to add the library project to the application project. However when I run it, I receive the error: /home/jakepetroules/silverlock/silverlock-build-desktop/desktop/silverlock: error while loading shared libraries: libsilverlocklib.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Is there some qmake variable I can set so that Qt Creator will set up the environment properly to run? It's quite annoying to have to copy all the files to another directory with a launcher script just to be able to test the build. On Windows it works perfectly - Qt Creator automatically adds the directories containing the DLLs to the PATH when it runs your application (where running it from Explorer would say DLL not found). Mac OS X is even worse, having to run install_name_tool on everything... So how can I set up my qmake files so everything works right from the run button in Qt Creator? Kind of hard to debug without this ability, too.

    I am a student and I do freelance here and there when I have opportunity. I believe my strongest language is C#. I don't really know what is going on in real programming world, so I was wondering if WPF did take over WinForms? I know the differences between two and how two can be used simultaneously but, I just don't want to invest my time in learning dying technologies, I hope you understand. So, for windows desktop programming what would you recommend to master WinForms, WPF or maybe both? I also get a lot that desktop programming is dead already and one should only care about learning web programming.

  • Can i make an installer for my delphi programme?

    I have made a delphi programme, which consists of a .exe and two custom file types that i have made (called Data.data and variables.data) I want to create a programme / find a programme that would place a copy of the main .exe in a folder in the program folders of XP, along with the .data files, and then place a shortcut to the programme on the desktop (ideally it would also put a folder in the start menu - all programmes with the programme. I should probably also make an uninstaller as well, that would remove the desktop shortcut, and delete the files. Is there a free piece of software i can use to create this, or is there any way i could achieve this myself through delphi?

  • Chrome Extension Manifest 'Matches'

    I'm trying my hands at a simple Chrome Extension, but am running into a problem with providing a value for the matches array in my content_scripts. { "name": "My Extension", "version": "1.0", "description": "My Extension Experiment", "browser_action": { "default_icon": "icon.png", "default_title": "Ext", "default_popup": "popup.html" }, "content_scripts": { "matches": ["http://*"], "js": ["scripts.js"] } } When I try to load this extension into Chrome, I get the following message: Could not load extension from 'C:\Users\foo\Desktop\Extensions\bar'.Invalid value for 'content_scripts'. I cannot see what is "invalid" about my value though. What I'm trying to do is match every URL, so my extension can manipulate the DOM (via javascript within scripts.js) of any page it is ran on. Am I missing something, going about this all wrong, or what? update After posting this question, I did notice that the Google example was slightly different than mine, so I modified my code a bit to reflect their syntax: "content_scripts": [{ "matches": ["http://*"], "js": ["scripts.js"] }] That being said, I still get the following error when trying to load my extension: Could not load extension from 'C:\Users\foo\Desktop\Extensions\bar'. Invalid value for 'content_scripts[0].matches[0]'.

  • What is the relationship between IRimTable and PersistenceStore?

    The BlackBerry Desktop API has the interface IRimTable which apparently maps an "application database" on a BlackBerry device to a virtual structure (i.e, IRimTable has IRimRecords, each of which has IRimField) that developer can browse the handheld device data when it is connected to a desktop computer. Meanwhile, applications in the handheld device can store its data in PersistenceStore databases. The point where I'm stuck is the PersistenceStore API doesn't define any Table or Records or Fields. Does anybody knows what is the relationship between these two classes? And how does the mapping work (if at all) ?

  • How can I change how OS X's 'say' command pronounces a word?

    OS X's say command is useful for some tasks (such as Skype's 'notify me when a contact comes online), but it is pronouncing some names incorrectly. Is there a way to teach say to pronounce a word differently? For example, try: say "Hi, Joel Spolsky" The 'ol' sounds like 'ball' rather than 'old'. I'd like to add an exception that say "Pronounce Spolsky like this", rather than try to teach new linguistic rules. I bet there is a way since it can pronounce "iphone" as Apple wants. Update - After some research, here's what I've learned: Text-to-speech is split between turning the text to phonemes, and then the phonemes are turned into audio using a voice. Changing the voice doesn't effect the phonemes. The Speech Synthesis Manager has some functions for turning text to phonemes, and a method for registering a speech dictionary that will add new text-phoneme maps. However, Apple's speech dictionary must be in a binary form - I didn't find any plist XML. Using dtrace while running say, I found some interesting files opened in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SpeechDictionary.framework/Resources. This is probably the speech dictionary, but they are all binary, except for Homophones, which is XML. Adding entries to Homophones does nothing - it is probably used in speech-to-text. They are also code signed by Apple - changing them may prevent some programs from working. PrefixDictionary CartNames CartLite SymbolDictionary Homophones There are ways to add text versions of application interface elements so VoiceOver works, a lot of which a developer gets for free, but there are tricky bits. The standard here appears to be to use a phonetic spelling as needed. My guesses are: say is a light layer of code on top of the Speech Synthesis Manager. It would be easy for the Apple devs to add a command line option to take the path to a speech dictionary plist for alternate phoneme mapping, but they didn't. It may be a useful open-source project to write a better say. Skype probably uses Speech Synthesis Manager directly, leaving no hooks to change the way my friend's names are pronounced, other than spelling them phonetically, which is silly. The easiest way to make a command line version of say is how JRobert suggested.   • Java app makes screen display unresponsive after 10 minutes of user idle time

    I've written a Java app that allows users to script mouse/keyboard input (JMacro, link not important, only for the curious). I personally use the application to automate character actions in an online game overnight while I sleep. Unfortunately, I keep coming back to the computer in the morning to find it unresponsive. Upon further testing, I'm finding that my application causes the computer to become unresponsive after about 10 minutes of user idle time (even if the application itself it simulating user activity). I can't seem to pin-point the issue, so I'm hoping somebody else might have a suggestion of where to look or what might be causing the issue. The relevant symptoms and characteristics: Unresponsiveness occurs after user is idle for 10 minutes User can still move the mouse pointer around the screen Everything but the mouse appears frozen... mouse clicks have no effect and no applications update their displays, including the Windows 7 desktop I left the task manager up along the with the app overnight so I could see the last task manager image before the screen freezes... the Java app is at normal CPU/Memory usage and total CPU usage is only ~1% After moving the mouse (in other words, the user comes back from being idle), the screen image starts updating again within 30 minutes (this is very hit and miss... sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes no results after two hours) User can CTRL-ALT-DEL to get to Windows 7's CTRL-ALT-DEL screen (after a 30 second pause). User is still able to move mouse pointer, but clicking any of the button options causes the screen to appear to freeze again On some very rare occasions, the system never freezes, and I come back to it in the morning with full responsiveness The Java app automatically stops input scripting in the middle of the night, so Windows 7 detects "real" idleness and turns the monitors into Standby mode... which they successfully come out of upon manually moving the mouse in the morning when I wake up, even though the desktop display still appears frozen Given the symptoms and characteristics of the issue, it's as if the Java app is causing the desktop display of the logged in user to stop updating, including any running applications. Programming concepts and Java packages used: Multi-threading Standard out and err are rerouted to a javax.swing.JTextArea The application uses a Swing GUI awt.Robot (very heavily used) awt.PointerInfo awt.MouseInfo System Specs: Windows 7 Professional Java 1.6.0 u17 In conclusion, I should stress that I'm not looking for any specific solutions, as I'm not asking a very specific question. I'm just wondering if anybody has run into a similar problem when using the Java libraries that I'm using. I would also gladly appreciate any suggestions for things to try to attempt to further pinpoint what is causing my problem. Thanks!   • How can I avoid Windows 8.1 resetting my font size?

    I am using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, which has a 15.6" screen with resolution 1366x768. I measured the screen with a ruler and calculated its DPI, which is 101. Therefore, I have set the scaling to 105%. However, when I change to an external monitor, which is a huge one with resolution 1920x1080 and DPI 93, I need to change the scaling to 97% but when I change the DPI back and forth, my font sizes have get resetted. I prefer using font sizes 14 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 13 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. However, as my laptop screen is too small, in order to make my apps fit on screen, I use font sizes 12 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 11 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. I don't know why I can't resize the window to make it larger than my screen in Windows (but it is possible in Kubuntu), therefore, some parts of my apps cannot be shown with my preferred font size. I have tried changing both the DPI and the font size by using .reg files. However, on my laptop screen, after I applied the file, signed out and in, the DPI setting changed, but the font sizes were resetted to tiny, and I had to apply the same file, signed out and in again to get the correct font size. The situation is even worse on my external monitor. After I applied the file, signed out and in, both the DPI setting and the font sizes were resetted to their default values, which were 96 DPI (the physical DPI as measured by dividing the resolution by the physical size is 93) and font size 9, which is totally unacceptable. How can I write the .reg files such that the settings can be correctly applied with a single sign in?

  • Create slide-in notifications à la Outlook in Windows with .NET

    I am using .NET and am creating a desktop app/service that will display notifications in the corner of my Desktop when certain events are triggered. I don't want to use a regular Message Box b/c that would be too intrusive. The notifications would slide into view and then fade out after a few seconds. I am thinking of something that will act very much like the Outlook alerts that one gets when a new message arrives. The question is: Should I use WPF for this? I've never done anything with WPF but will happily try it if that's best means to the end. Is there a way to accomplish this with regular .NET libraries?

  • Creating a local CDMA or GSM network?

    I am developing a number of different mobile applications for a number of different mobile devices and I want to quickly test in a local development environment. I was wondering if it is possible (with some sort of hardware) to set up a local desktop CDMA / GSM base station for testing devices over a local personal cellular network. The range does not have to be very far. The alternative is purchasing a SIM card and plans for various carriers but not all carriers/network types are available in our area. I'm sure I had seen some sort of desktop device that would let you setup local networks for development/testing purposes but can't seem to find it. Thanks.

  • I just don't know what it is, tried everything, IE 7 bug

    Has anyone seen this bug? I have a sidebar with a ul nav background image for the hover state, floated right, looks great in all browsers. Then...I added another div underneath it for ad space. inside, there's an anchored image. That image tucks underneath the background image of the nav, but only in IE7 (i abandoned trying to please ie6). So I took it out of the sidebar, played with float, display,height hacks, but nothing works I can declare a large top margin with some more top padding do get it to clear but it breaks the design. i even tried creating a div called clear and put a top margin there. so it displays with this huge gap in chrome, FF, safari but this tiny space between in IE. i even tried creating a div called clear and put a top margin there. I have spent hours trying to find someone with the same problem but to no avail. Any suggestions?     Recently I have purchased a notebook that cames with Windows Home Basic (that don't have with ASP.Net/IIS. I thought in upgrade the Windows version to one with ASP.Net/IIS, but I thought in another possibility: I have an Hard Disk Case with a 360Gb HD. I thought in create a virtual machine with Windows Ultimate (installing too ASP.Net, IIS and Visual Studio 2008) in this HD Case, then I can access my "development enviroment" in any computer that I will work on (my desktop machine and my notebook). But I was worried about the performance. I don't have experience working in Virtual Machines (I use it just to quick compatibility tests)... Are you using Virtual Machine as your primary development enviroment? What your finds? ==================== Thanks for your answers! It really did help me! I have this question : I need to create a paradict "rightGuesses" which will get 3 arguments , each one of them is a list of letters : 1) The list of guessed letters 2) The word i have to guess 3) The letters that where guessed so far . for example : rightGuesses([n,o,p,q], [p,r,o,l,o,g], Ans). will give us Ans = [p, -, o, -, o, -]. i made: rightGuesses([],T2,[ANS]) rightGuesses([A|T1],T2,[ANS]):- (member(A,T2))=\=true , rightGuesses(T1,T2,[ _ |'-']). rightGuesses([A|T1],T2,[ANS]):- member(A,T2), rightGuesses(T1,T2,[ _ |A]). but i get : ERROR: c:/users/leonid/desktop/file3.pl:5:0: Syntax error: Operator expected Warning: c:/users/leonid/desktop/file3.pl:6: when i trying to compile it what is my problem , and is there is a better way to do it ? thanks in advance.

  • xvfb on a machine with a display, can an application run 'in the background?'

    I'm setting up to cron a web scraping job, using xvfb, firefox, and watir on my Mac OS X. In testing the script so far, firefox pops up visibly on the local desktop, the watir script executes, and then firefox exits (I quit firefox in my script). I'd like to set the xvfb DISPLAY such that firefox will run, but won't be seen on the local desktop, running 'in the background' so to speak. Nothing I've been able to find online discusses such a possibility - nor explains that it's not possible. Is it possible? If so, what do I need to do to make it work?

  • Quest for Multi-Development Web Platforms: Titanium, OpenLaszlo or others if any ? Which to prefer ?

    In my quest for Multidevelopement Web Platforms (Desktop Browser and Mobile), I have encountered only 2 : Titanium Openlaszlo Only two. So are there any others ? I have looked at Titanium, seems very promising but I wasn't even able to create a project as It crashed on my windows 7 PC. As for Openlaszlo I heard about it years ago; OpenLaszlo can generate both flash and html. I wasn't really interested until now as I didn't really have any real need for being multiplatform. Flash alone could suffice with Web Desktop. Did you try any of them ?

  • What would you do if you coded a C++/OO cross-platform framework and realize its laying on your disk

    This project started as a development platform because i wanted to be able to write games for mobile devices, but also being able to run and debug the code on my desktop machine too (ie, the EPOC device emulator was so bad): the platforms it currently supports are: Window-desktop WinCE Symbian iPhone The architecture it's quite complete with 16bit 565 video framebuffer, blitters, basic raster ops, software pixel shaders, audio mixer with shaders (dsp fx), basic input, a simple virtual file system... although this thing is at it's first write and so there are places where some refactoring would be needed. Everything has been abstracted away and the guiding principle are: mostly clean code, as if it was a book to just be read object-orientation, without sacrifying performances mobile centric The idea was to open source it, but without being able to manage it, i doubt the software itself would benefit from this move.. Nevertheless, i myself have learned a lot from unmaintained projects. So, thanking you in advance for reading all this... really, what would you do?
