• CentOS VM, NTP synchronization problems

  We have three CentOS 5.9 VMs on an ESX3.5 host. Because of the nature of the services we provide it is required that the NTP time is synchronized and the time is correct on all three of them. However one of them constantly drifts back each day for about 66 sec. So far none of us seems to understand as why is this happening. We included the possibility that the VM may be somehow pulling the time from the host, however all of the three VMs have identical configuration settings and they did not have VMware tools installed. Although I realize that this is probably a question of an internal matter and not to ask for on a forum, I would appreciate if anyone of you knows some CentOS NTP diagnostic routines that will help me to diagnose the problem and find a reliable solution.   For several years I wanted to move from Windows to OSX. Mainly because back then Windows95/98/2000 were terrible options. Now I have finally put my hands on this. Just when Vista and Win7 seems to redeem all the mistakes from their predecessors. The most terrible rant is the lack of the following keys: PageUp, PageDown, Home, End, Supr Not having those made my first programming day terrible on OSX. I don't regret switching, but somehow I expected something else. So: Have you considered switch to mac? What has stopped you? What is holding you back? If you have switched already, are you willing to comeback? (Now I run XP/Vista/Ubuntu/OSX in the same machine, yeah!!)

• Windows 7 x64: 3900mb of 4gb RAM usage, even when (almost) nothing running.

  As the title suggests, I am having a problem with memory usage. I have had my computer (Vaio AW11Z/B laptop) for over a year now, and it was running perfectly until I guess a day or two ago. Now programs randomly crash, the mouse lags around the screen and the memory usage is going through the roof for no apparent reason. I am having exactly the same problem as this guy: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/1f716693-0a46-473e-9dc0-8c2b1a058443/. I think he explains it better. Anyone had a similar issue? What's going on? I don't think it's a virus/adware thing. Thanks very much for any help.

• Upgrading from MySQL Server to MariaDB

  I've heard that MariaDB has better performance than MySQL-Server. I'm running software that makes an intensive use of MySQL, thats why I want to try upgrading to MariaDB. Please tell me your experiences doing this conversion, and instructions or tips. Also, which files I should take care of for making a backup of MySQL-Server, so if something goes wrong with MariaDB, I could rollback to MySQL without issues? • Software for printing small photos on larger paper with easy layout snapping

  Have some photos and pictures to print (graphs, but that doesn't matter here). So far when printing I inserted them in MS Word, played with layout on the paper, and after half a day, finally managed to get it just right. Usually then, the power runs out :-) Anyways, does anyone know of any software which enables me to easily put up some kind of a layout (one under the other, or some rectangular grid) where I can just "snap" photos next to each other, before printing the whole thing. I know I can do that in pretty much any photo editing program, but the problem is that that pixel hunting takes time ... and is generally a very annoying process, expecially when you don't want to edit the photos in mind, just print them out. Anyways, I'm sure you get the general idea ... Suggestions ?

• LInux (Ubuntu Karmic) equivalent to Pawsense

  I now work from a home office - much to the delight of my cats. One in particular likes to come for a hug several times a day. That in itself is fine but he tends to sit on my laptop keyboard whilst I'm working on my desktop and vice-versa. Also he'll walk across any keyboard I'm actually using at the time. I've found Pawsense and would like to know if anyone can suggest a Linux equivalent (or some incantations to achieve the same). Training him out of sitting on the keyboard is likely to prove fruitless (a suggested here). He's far more pig-headed than I am. This conversation discusses some utilities like xlock et al but I'd prefer if possible to have something more along the lines of Pawsense that doesn't lock the keyboard but "simply" intercepts cat-like typing. • Debian: SSH: "PermitRootLogin=forced-commands-only" stopped working

  I have several servers running Debian Lenny. Just recently I discovered the PermitRootLogin=forced-commands-only directive for ssh, which allows me to run a scripted rsync as root with an ssl key, without enabling more generalized root ssh access. However, last week this stopped working - it appears on all of my servers - and I can't figure out why. Everything continues to work fine with PermitRootLogin=yes, but I would prefer to block root logins - especially via passwords. The day it stopped working, we reconfigured some of the ports on one of our switches (which we later reverted), but I can't see that affecting this, since it still works with PermitRootLogin set to yes. How can I diagnose why the forced-commands-only directive has apparently stopped working?

• How do I delete an Outlook calendar entry (after the meeting is over) without notifying the creator

  I have several meetings during the day and I like to be able to open my calendar and see what is left at a glance so I delete the meetings that I have already completed. If I do this close enough to the meeting time I am asked if I want to notify the creator. If I do this after the meeting has started Outlook automatically sends a notice to the creator that I have declined the meeting. I am only deleting the one instance so it is still in my calendar for the next time, however that creates an email that others must read/delete. I need to be able to remove single occurrences of meetings without automatically sending a notice that I am deleting the entry. NOTE: I am using Outlook 2007, I did not see anything in the Advanced Email Options. NOTE 2: I have seen this happen with Lotus notes as well (Like anyone actually uses that). NOTE 3: There is not a sent message created, only the creator of the calendar event will see the message.

  is there a way to automatically change the aspect ratio flag of a video so that it displays in 16:9 in all video players WITHOUT reencode? Quality loss is not a concern.   I have been using IIS7.5 Since its release. I am also using commerce server 2007sp2. Due to Commerce Servers Need for memory and processor I have the app pool the website is assigned to recycling at midnight every night. My Question is what is the best time table to recycle heavy web app pools? I am looking to keep speed and not bump potential customers while recycling multiple times a day if possible. Another issue is that every few days the same app pool will hang and I have to force a reset of IIS to get it working again.

• Highly Available Web Application (LAMP)

  I work for a small company who provides a web application for thousands of users. Earlier this year they had one server hosted one company. We recently acquired another server in a different location with the hopes of one day making this a redundant failover machine. I understand what to do with the mysql replication, I plan on using a master-master replication setup, and rsync to sync the scripts and files, however I am at a stand still about how to configure the fail-over. Ideally I would like the two machines to accept requests, like a round robin dns, however if one machine goes down I do not want requests to go that machine. All of the solutions I am come across assumes high availability of servers in the same location, these servers are in two completely different locations with different public ip address.   I need to plan a downtime for a maintenance of my environment (or some part of my environment) by means of Sun Grid Engine. Is it possible to somehow use backfilling information to tell the grid engine to plan only those jobs on cluster which are able to finish (i have backfilling information) till let's say 10 am next day? Can I then at 10 am rely on the fact that all compute nodes are clean, jobs are only queued, no job is planned and so that I can start maintenance? Thank you for your time. mousee

  I've got a legacy application that needs an smtp server to relay emails. Each client has various control over their IT infrastructures (from little to none at all), so I can't necessarily install an smtp server on each of their machines. Can anyone recommend a basic SMTP Relay Service? Its literally only for sending a couple of emails a day to a list of about 20 users per client. The application only allows for the smtp server and to/from addresses to be specified. I'm assuming its using the default port. Thanks!

• How to set default permissions for automounted FAT drives in Ubuntu

  I've got many FAT32 drives that I'd like to mount in Ubuntu such that they have permission mode 700 for directories and 600 for all other files. By default, they have 755 for all files, which is not particularly useful since almost no non-directories should be executable, and it screws up version control repos hosted on the drives. "Back in the day" I would have had the drives listed in /etc/fstab with the umask/dmask I want and there was no such thing as a default. These days, drives automount under their volume names. Which is great, except now I have no idea how to set the default. I have tried changing the /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options gconf key with no apparently effect. It was 077 initially but the mounted drive reflected a default of 022; changing it and re-inserting the drives resulted in the files still having permission bits of 755.

  Good day. I have stepped into project that requires a server migration that would change the means of authentication for our CAC/PKI SSL enabled website. We are using iPlanet 7 and Oracle Directory Server Enterprise 7 as our LDAP server. The situation is that the site is still CAC/PKI enabled, but at the firewall. The information we want to authenticate against is now in the http header. How do I configure iPlanet and LDAP to authenticate against the header instead of SSL? Thanks. Edit, Can this be done with IIS keeping the Directory Server EE LDAP in tact or is the ACL iPlanet only?

• How can I edit files directly from find results

  Let's say, I want to replace one string with another. Normally I use TextMate, but today, I don't remember why, I decided to run the search in Sublime Text 2 (which I installed some time ago, but haven't used since). I was impressed with "Find Results" window, seems more useful that textmate's. Then I tried to edit text right inside that window and (I can swear on my macbook) it worked (I was able to commit those changes to git repo)! I thought then, "Wow, that's a really nice feature. Should I migrate from TM already?". Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reproduce this behaviour later. I can still edit text in "find results" window, but changes don't persist (that is, original files are not touched). Am I doing something wrong now, or was it caffeine-induced hallucination earlier in the day?

• MySql calculate number of connections needed

  I am trying to figure my needs regarding web service hosting. After trying Azure I have realized that the default MySql they provide (through a third party) limits the account to 4 connections. You can then upgrade the account to 15, 30 or 40 connections (which is quite expensive). Their 15 connections plan is descirbed as: "Excellent choice for light test and staging apps that need a reliable MySQL database". I have 2 questions: if my application is a web service which needs to preform ~120k Queries a day (Normal/BELL distribution) and each query is ~150ms(duration)/~400ms(fetch), how many connection do I need? If instead of using cloud computing, I will choose a VPS, how many connections will I be able to handle on a 1GB 2 cores VPS? Thank you!

  I played SEGA with my KEGA.exe (Sega Emulator) and it made my right key to be malfunctioned. Befor that day, I had played it, too in my notebook with fullscreen mode, and suddenly my ACER Aspire One notebook restarted during that emulator was running and before the screen was black (boot), my screen was blue with many words but I couldn't read them, but I remember that there was a word like 000000 x 0000000 x 000000 and bla bla bla. And when I played without fullscreen mode, It didn't happened but it made my right key to be malfunctioned until when I went to Bot setup, my right key doesn't work. Do U know what is the problem of my emulator? Can U explain me for that?

• Having to Toggle Between Two Sets of Video Drivers

  So, I've got a Win7 64-bit gaming PC with GTX 260's. Recently, StarCraft 2 had an issue with flickering, which NVidia fixed with a new set of drivers. However, these new drivers induce unplayable graphical errors with Neverwinter Nights 2, something me and my friends still play from time to time. I am seeking advice on the "best" way to rectify this situation, to be able to switch between two driver releases, without compromising the stability of my system (if Windows stability isn't an oxymoron). I'm wondering if Windows 7 is structured in such a way that I can constantly reinstall these two sets of drivers back and forth overtop each other, possibly six or eight times a day, without very quickly driving myself to reformat to maintain that "just like new" performance. I'm loathe to have to reformat the drive and maintain two copies of the operating system, but I'll do it if I have to.

• Connect macbook to my LAN through a VPN - best solution?

  So I have a LAN connected via a ADSL/PPPoA, this is using a bog-standard DLink router supplied by my ISP (talktalk UK). I have a NAS within the LAN that is running FreeNAS and I want to be able to connect to it when I'm out and about. It's running an atom so it's quite low on juice consumption but I don't want to have it on all day and night so I've been waking it via a magic packet and booting it down from the web admin when I need it. So I want to connect to the LAN, I presume via a VPN, to be able to send a magic packet. But what is the best method to accomplish this, or is there an easier way? I've been looking at the cisco 857 integrated router and the Netgear prosafe 318(behind modem) but not sure If I'm on the right track with what I want to achieve as I've not much experience or knowledge with VPN's or networking (software engineering student). I have tried port forwarding but to no avail, either with magic packets or even connecting outside the LAN via DYNDNS. Thanks,

• What may be the reason of "hide inactive icons" option of WinXP systray to stop working?

  Yesterday I've set up Defraggler (I've used it before many times) to defragment my hard drives and turn off my laptop when it finishes. I haven§t installed/uninstalled/reconfigured anything that day. When I've then turned the laptop on, I've got taskbar's "quick launch" area disappeared and all and every system tray (notification area) icons displayed (and the arrow-in-a-bubble usually folding to hide most of them gone). I've then successfully turned on "show quick launch" option, but "hide inactive icons" was already on. I've turned it off, applied, closed "taskbar and start menu properties", then opened again to turn the option back on, applied, restarted, nothing changes. Now I have to have all the system tray icons always displayed. Any ideas what may the reason be and how to fix? The OS is Windows XP Pro SP3 with all the updates.

• Need Help Debugging BSOD

  For the last few days I've been getting a BSOD at least once a day. Apparently the crash has been caused by ntkrpamp.exe and searching on google has revealed that the issue seems to be related to bad RAM. I have run memtest and my RAM modules have no errors on them. I'm pretty sure the issue is related to drivers, but I can't figure out which one. I'm not an expert in interpreting the output of windbg so any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Here is my analysis with WinDbg. It was too long to paste it here. One strange thing i noticed is that my Windows XP is in Spanish (SP3) and ntkrpamp.exe copyright info seems to be in portuguese. Not sure if that could be an issue, perhaps i have the wrong ntkrpamp.exe... Thanks a lot in advance

  I'm wondering if DDOS attacks to PBX or telecommunications systems is possibe real. There are DDOs attacks to web servers, which mostly give them so much concurrent loads or connections that service get unavailable. Many government or non-profit organizations that suffered this kind of attacks, eventually could choose to shutdown their web server and that's it, waiting for these attacks to end. For a DDOs attacks to PBX, I imagine that it would result in telephones getting busy or ringing all the time unstoppably. This kind of attack could really damage any kind organization. Is it possible to do that or are we just in the beginnings?
