  • Why does everyone dislike PHP? [closed]

    I'm primarily a Java/Python programmer, but I just picked up an entry-level job doing web development. I had to learn PHP, and several of my CS friends told me that it would stunt my coding ability/be terrible to program in/murder me in the middle of the night. So far, there have been annoying moments with the language (one particular thing that bugs me is the syntax for calling functions...), but nothing living up to the statements of my friends. I still haven't learned very much about the language. Is their hate justified? Why or why not? A few quotes I've seen about PHP: Haskell is faster than C++, more concise than Perl, more regular than Python, more flexible than Ruby, more typeful than C#, more robust than Java, and has absolutely nothing in common with PHP.   • How to make audio and video streaming servers work?

    I am PHP MySQL developer and I am interested in the way television and radio are broadcasted over Internet live. I want to know how it works and and what are its requirements (which package of which programming language offers the best). And please clarify me: Websites are stored in servers. From my desktop, if I want to broadcast some video, then I need to connect to webserver (to upstream the video). Is there an application to do that (or do I have to code that or embed in my web application and which programming language would be suitable (does Python support that))? And I also need a script to handle the upstreamed video or audio (can I do that with PHP)?

  • JavaOne Session Report - Java ME SDK 3.2

    Oracle Product Manager for Java ME SDK, Sungmoon Cho, presented a session, "Developing Java Mobile and Embedded Applications with Java ME SDK 3.2,” wherein he covered the basic new features of the Java ME Platform SDK 3.2, a state-of-the-art toolbox for developing mobile and embedded applications. The session began with a summary of the four main components of Java ME SDK. A device emulator allows developers to quickly run and test applications before commercialization. It supports CLDC/MIDP CLDC/IMP.NG and CLC/AGUI. A development environment assists writing, running debugging and deploying and enables on-device debugging. Samples provide developers with useful codes and frameworks. IDE Plugins – NetBeans and Eclipse – equip developers with CPU Profiler, Memory Monitor, Network Monitor, and Device Selector. This means that manual integration is no longer necessary. Cho then talked about the Java ME SDK’s on-device tooling architecture: * Java ME SDK provides an architecture ideal for on-device-debugging.* Device Manager plays the central role by managing different devices whether it is the emulator or a device that Oracle provides or recommends or a third party device as long as the devices have a Java Runtime that supports the protocol that is designated.* The Emulator provides an accurate emulation, since it uses the same code base used in Oracle’s Java ME runtime.* The Universal Emulator Interface (UEI) makes it easy for IDEs to detect the platform.He then focused on the Java ME SDK release highlights, which include: * Implementation and support for the new Oracle® Java Wireless Client 3.2 runtime and the Oracle® Java ME Embedded runtime. A full emulation for the runtime is provided.* Support for JSR 228, the Information Module Profile-Next Generation API (IMP-NG).   • Unix as opposed to Windows (Java and C++)

    Firstly I should explain the background. I am interested in high frequency trading programming roles. After looking at many job specs it is very clear that there is a big demand for programmers who have programmed Java and C++ on Unix as opposed to Windows. My question is what are the differences a High Freq programmer would come across? It cannot be something in the language itself because syntactically they do not differ over OS? Therefore I thought it must be something which the programming language has to interface, resources etc? Could anyone please help me out as I am trying to improve my C++/Java on Unix, in order to aim for this type of career? ps I'm guessing part of this answer lies with the socket infrastructure on Unix?

  • Google Maps keeps displaying in Spanish

    Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/BlueProbe/archive/2013/11/12/154610.aspxIn Chrome I use Google Maps as a search provider.  That way I can just type maps for the URL address, hit a couple of tab keys, and enter the maps address and have the page rendered with my map.  Now periodically maps were displaying in Spanish with a "click here to translate to English” option.  Huh?  My language settings on the browser and within Google settings all were English.  Turns out I had set my Chrome search provider string to include a language query parm=es.  Why would I do that?  Evil twin perhaps.

  • Looking for a 24 Hour project for multiple languages [closed]

    Right two friends and I came up with this idea of having a 24h programming competition. Where we are going to meet at one place and program away for 24hours long. Though we need a 'project'. Something that needs to be made within 24h. Doesn't have to be a real thing, just a nice learning 'thing'. The rules that we setup for ourselves is that the project can be programmed in any language of our own choice. What I know is that one guy is a PHP enthousiastic, we've got a C#/.NET person. And I am quite easy in languages and speak quite a few (PHP/C#.net/C++STL/Python/JavaScript/Java). Anything really language specific is out of the question. Is there anyone who happens to have a great idea for this?

  • How do you take into account usability and user requirements for your application?

    Our team supports BackOffice application: a mix of WinForm and WPF windows. (about 80 including dialogs). Really a kind of a Swiss Army Knife. It is used by developers, tech writers, security developers, testers. The requirements for new features come quite often and sometimes we play Wizard of Oz to decide which GUI our users like the most. And it usually happens (I admit it can be just my subjective interpretation of the reality) that one tiny detail giving the flavor of good usability to our app requires a lot of time. This time is being spent on 'fighting' with GUI framework making it act like we need. And it very difficult to make estimations for this type of tasks (at least for me and most members of our team). Scrum poker is not a help either. Management often considers this usability perfectionism to be a waste of time. On the other hand an accumulated affect of features where each has some little usability flaw frustrates users. But the same users want frequent releases and instant bug fixes. Hence, no way to get the positive feedback: there is always somebody who is snuffy. I constantly feel myself as competing with ourselves: more features - more bugs/tasks/architecture. We are trying to outrun the cart we are pushing. New technologies arrive and some of them can potentially help to improve the design or decrease task implementation time but these technologies require learning, prototyping and so on. Well, that was a story. And now is the question: How do you balance between time pressure, product quality, users and management satisfaction? When and how do you decide to leave the problem with not a perfect but to some extent acceptable solution, how often do you make these decisions? How do you do with your own satisfaction? What are your priorities? P.S. Please keep in mind, we are a BackOffice team, we have neither dedicated technical writer nor GUI designer. The tester have joined us recently. We've much work to do and much freedom concerning 'how'. I like it because it fosters creativity but I don't want to become too nerdy perfectionist.

  • What are some non-MS languages that can write xlsx (Excel 2007+) documents efficiently?

    Unfortunately, Excel format is required for the project I am working on. I have no problems getting the data I need in objects and arrays, and currently PHPExcel is doing handling the document generation. It works, but it's slow and loopy. Was wondering if there is a more efficient server language to generate Excel documents (not CSVs). This is a pure Linux environment so I need to stay away from .NET. I am open to any programming language that does it cleanly and efficiently. Thanks.

    PostgreSql 9.3 allows us to declare parameter types to match column types, aka Copying Types. Also it allows us to omit the length of VARCHAR fields, without any performance penalty. These two features make PostgreSql a great back end for agile development, because they make PL/PgSql more resilient to changes. Both features are not in SQL Server 2008 R2.     One of the five people who interviewed me asked a question that resulted in an hour-long discussion: "Explain how you would develop a frequency-sorted list of the ten thousand most-used words in the English language." My initial response was to assail the assumptions underlying the problem. Language is a fluid thing, I argued. It changes in real time. Vocabulary and usage patterns shift day-to-day. To develop a list of words and their frequencies means taking a snapshot of a moving target. Whatever snapshot you take today isn't going to look like the snapshot you take tomorrow or even five minutes from now. Thanking you advance for your answers and consideration.

  • What languages do you support when localizing?

    I recently converted an iphone app to support different languages, and was wondering which ones I should include, and which ones aren't worth the trouble. What I mean by that is best illustrated by an example. In Ireland, the Irish language is spoken by very few of the people there. It could be considered a dying language. Almost everybody speaks English (if not everybody). So in this example, I don't think it's worth the trouble to support. In addition, the number of people using modern technology may be limited as well. For example, most people in Cambodia would not be likely to purchase software, and therefore the benefits of localization are reduced. What languages do you support when localizing?
