• WinTV-HVR-1900 no picture in VLC

  I've connected a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1900 to my Ubuntu 10.10 PC and used the instructions here to install the firmware and test that it is detected using dmesg. Detection is successful. The WinTV is connected to my TV using component connections. I run this command to enable the component interface: v4l2-ctl -i 1. Then I use cat /dev/video0 test.mpg, and that file is created and plays perfectly with video and sound. However, when I try to play /dev/video0 in VLC Player (and other players), I just get a black screen. I also try the v4l2-ctl -i 1 command before I try it in VLC, but I still get a black screen, and when I use v4l2-ctl -I, it shows it has connection 0 again (Television), so it reverts back to connection 0 instead of connection 1 (component). So I'm a little stuck with getting VLC to get a picture, even though the CAT command works fine. Anything I can try?

• Super Key doesn't work on Kubuntu 12.04

  I have Kubuntu 12.04 installed on HP 430 Notebook PC. My problem is that when I press Super Key, nothing happened. Some of my Fn keys did not work either. I have changed the Keyboard Model in System SettingsHardwareInput DevicesKeyboard to Hewlett Packard Internet keyboard but doesn't seems to help. I have also Compiz-Config-Setting-Manager installed but I don't know how to make the right keyboard setting. I would like to have the Super Key launch Start Menu Launcher as in MS-Windows, is it possible ... Thanks for the help

• Assessing Relative Maintainability

  We (a contractor, actually) are implementing an off the shelf system to replace a legacy homegrown system for the core domain of the company (designing widgets). Unfortunately both systems will have to run concurrently for some time, as the product just isn't ready yet. Also, the decision was made to only migrate some of the widgets from the legacy system, based on date of last sale activity. Later on a new requirement came down: certain people in the company, most of them outside of the widget development context, want to search all widgets. The search results screen has 3 pieces of data: a GUID, a human readable id that is searchable, and a brief description (may need to be searchable in the future). In the widget details, there will be multiple screens. These screens align very well along SOA / bounded context lines - a screen for marketing data, a screen for sales history, etc. UML ahead! I am probably using the wrong kind of arrows here so please forgive me. The current solution - which is not in production yet - is something like the following: Both systems will be queried and the controller will merge the results. The new system has its own proprietary query language (we've alleviated this a bit with a LINQ provider). It also puts a lot of data on the wire. 15 search results typically run about 60k of unintelligible SOAP-wrapped xml. So I would prefer to avoid querying this system directly. These two systems publish events to help us integrate with other systems, mainly an ERP system. One of these events contains all the data necessary for the search screen. I proposed the following alternative: However I am being told that 'adding another database' will create more maintenance down the road. However, I believe this to be false, as I had to add a relatively simple feature that took several hours longer than anticipated because of this merging code. I want to get a feel for which system is more maintainable in the long run. I personally have not had the burden of maintaining any large system. I want something more than my gut. Specifically I'd like to know if having more, specialized physical databases is more or less maintainable than having less larger physical databases.

• Radeon HD5670 hangs after login

  Thanks in advance for your advices. I installed, Ubuntu 12.04 today, on my PC with a Radeon hd5670 graphics card. The first error I encountered, (just like the first time Unity came out - after witch I waited to try Ubuntu again until now) is, that it hanged after login at the desktop wallpaper, with only the mouse cursor. Well actually the first problem was with the live CD, but I managed to install it, using the install now, not the try now. Live CD has the same problem, as after install. So, after installing and getting the error, I searched of course before asking this:) I found this: Ubuntu hangs at purple screen The accepted answer there helped me to get to this. (note, that the below picture is a screen taken from a working desktop, and then erased the parts that don't show on mine.) Note that there is nothing at the top except the brown bar. No shutdown button, no nothing. The system hangs, I can't click on anything, I can only wiggle around with my mouse XD

• Wireless xbox360 pad connected with xboxdrv doesn't show in jstest

  So Lubuntu 13.04, 3.4.0. I'm trying to use my wireless xbox controller. I've installed xboxdrv. I have to run it with sudo, or I get USBController::USBController(): libusb_open() failed: LIBUSB_ERROR_ACCESS. If I connect the adapter, run the program, and then press the button on the gamepad to connect it, it never really connects - just flashes like it's searching. If I reboot, leaving the controller searching, and run the command again while it's searching after I boot up, the controller connects (the light becomes solid in one corner). Using pkill xboxdrv and then relaunching it doesn't work. • What tools should I consider if my aim is to make a game available to as many platforms as possible?

  We're planning on developing a 2D, grid-based puzzle game, and although it's still very early in the planning stages, we'd like to make our decisions well from the beginning. Our strategy will be to make the game available to as many platforms as possible, for example PCs (Windows, Mac and/or Linux), mobile phones (iPhone and/or Android based phones), game consoles (XBLA and/or PSN) PC will have an emphasis, but I believe that's the most flexible platform so that shouldn't be a problem. So, what programming language, game engine, frameworks and all around tools would be best suited for our goal? P.S.: I'm betting a set of tools won't cover ALL of them, and that there will still be some kind of "translating" effort for some platforms, but we'd like to know what the most far reaching are.

Ideally, I want a MacBook Pro. But is that enough power? I've been told that I need a desktop for what I am doing though I'd rather stay portable I've been told that I should go PC linux to get the most power but I'd rather stay mac I've been told that RAM is more of bottleneck than processor speed I've been told that the Graphics Card is more important than CPU and that code optimizations such as using trees over lists, proper threading, sending tasks to the GPU make a bigger difference than the hardware!!! what's true?! what do I need? • Freezes if desktop effects is used.

  I have found that using desktop effects in Ubuntu versions later than 8.10 causes the desktop to freeze after a few seconds on my PC. the command lspci -nn gave the following 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02) and with lspci -k I have 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 The intel graphics cards seems to have some performence issues with xorg driver. However I have not noticed any freeze in Ubuntu 8.10. There are some workarounds at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes to make them work. But I can't find out what workaround should I do with my graphics controller. I have tried workaround F but it did not help. can anyone help me find a workaround for my graphics card? and is it actually possible to use desktop effect in this graphics card ?

• Ubuntu 12.10 live-usb won't boot

  I own an Aleutia "Tango" low power PC. It uses a Intel Atom CPU N2800 @1.86GHz processor. I know there are Linux issues with the "Cedar Trail" graphics on this hardware but I can happily run Ubuntu 12.04 using the VESA graphics driver. I wanted to try out Ubuntu 12.10 so I created a live USB under 12.04 but I am unable to get this to boot. It gets as far as the Grub screen but after that the monitor shuts down. I have tried the F6 "nomodeset" option but that doesn't make any difference. Does anyone have any knowledge of this problem? Thanks in advance.

• Booting 11.10 from USB stick on MacBook Pro 5,1 fails

  I've created a bootable memory stick on a Windows computer, and tested it on an HP PC. It's made from a 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10, downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. When I boot from this memory stick, there is some kind of boot menu, where I can choose to run Ubuntu from the memory stick, or install. I select Run from memory stick. (the words may be wrong here, I'm taking it from memory.) From this point, the screen is black (but backlighted), and I can't do anything but turn off the computer. It gets hot, too. Has anyone been more successful than me? Are there known issues? The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro 5,1 (unibody, late 2008), 4 GB memory.

• Best Practices for High Volume CPA Import Operations with ebXML in B2B 11g

  Background B2B 11g supports ebXML messaging protocol, where multiple CPAs can be imported via command-line utilities.  This note highlights one aspect of the best practices for import of CPA, when large numbers of CPAs in the excess of several hundreds are required to be maintained within the B2B repository. Symptoms The import of CPA usually is a 2-step process, namely creating a soa.zip file using b2bcpaimport utility based on a CPA properties file and then using b2bimport to import the b2b repository.  The commands are provided below: ant -f ant-b2b-util.xml b2bcpaimport -Dpropfile="<Path to cpp_cpa.properties>" -Dstandard=true ant -f ant-b2b-util.xml b2bimport -Dlocalfile=true -Dexportfile="<Path to soa.zip>" -Doverwrite=true Usually the first command completes fairly quickly regardless of the number of CPAs in the repository. However, as the number of trading partners within the repository goes up, the time to complete the second command could go up to ~30 secs per operation. So, this could add up to a significant amount, if there is a need to import hundreds of CPA in a production system within a limited downtime, maintenance window.  Remedy In situations, where there is a large number of entries to be imported, it is best to setup a staging environment and go through the import operation of each individual CPA in an empty repository. Since, this will be done in an empty repository, the time taken for completion should be reasonable.  After all the partner profiles have been imported, a full repository export can be taken to capture the metadata for all the entries in one file.  If this single file with all the partner entries is imported in a loaded repository, the total time taken for import of all the CPAs should see a dramatic reduction. Results Let us take a look at the numbers to see the benefit of this approach. With a pre-loaded repository of ~400 partners, the individual import time for each entry takes ~30 secs. So, if we had to import another 100 partners, the individual entries will take ~50 minutes (100 times ~30 secs). On the other hand, if we prepare the repository export file of the same 100 partners from a staging environment earlier, the import takes about ~5 mins. The total processing time for the loading of metadata, specially in a production environment, can thus be shortened by almost a factor of 10.   I have an old PC that is now my new Ubuntu machine. Currently I was working on sharing a drive so that backups and streaming could take place. I have it set up perfectly on my windows 7 laptop (able to read and write to it). For some reason however my wife's windows 8 laptop is not showing up on the Ubuntu and vice versa. I turned on network discovery on the win8 machine, but that didn't help. Thanks in advance edit- I have my win7 and win8 in the same homegroup and both can see each other in the network. Also the workgroup is the same.

• power manger keeps on shuting down the display even when i state in the power manger to never do that.

  i'm probably missing something here, i'm using the default ubuntu power manger, i setup it like that: on AC: no screen dimming when ideal. never put computer to sleep. never put display to sleep. on battery i kept the default setting. and still ubuntu does what ever it likes :\ , after 15 min it puts the display to sleep. any one having the same problem and found a way to bypass it? im using eee pc with ubuntu 10.10 desktop.

• Why can't the Unity panel be hidden?

  I am a light Linux user. I have Natty installed on my netbook and used to have it dual-booted on my Windows 7 PC. After a total refresh of my notebook off came Ubuntu and I'm back to basics over there. But HERE (I'm running Natty on a HP-Mini) I've decided to poke around a bit to get the best user experience on this little thing. I really like the Unity interface but really hate the static Unity Panel. I have no clue why it's even necessary to be on globally. After all, in the classic interface, both panels can autohide or get filed aside with buttons on either side of the bar. On a 10" screen, real estate is at a premium. What intrinsic purpose does the static unity panel hold for the OS? There has to be a great reason for this thing to HAVE to be here. It ONLY goes away in fullscreen apps and I can't use everything fullscreen Why can the unity panel not be hidden?

I'm thinking of using the FlatRedBall engine and either Allegro Sprite Editor or Amiga DPaint for the sprites, but I don't know is there is anything better for a more or less beginner in video game making. So my questions are as follows, what would be the best engine to use so that we could also sell the game later on, (I don't really care what language I'd have to use) and what would be the best thing to use for sprite creating?
