  • Using ClearOS as a gateway/firewall/mailserver

    Just installed ClearOS on a PC to act as our firewall firstly and then to act as an internal mailserver. My question is: Can i create a mailserver that then routes the mail through to our ISP mail server without having to contact the ISP and gain MX records etc..? We are a small business (5 PCs + dataserver) and the reason this is interesting is because we need to keep a record of outgoing mails from certain users, as well as spam and virus filtering.

  • Log and Block Website using Windows 2008 SBS

    A client has asked me to setup Windows 2008 SBS to block and log websites from a list they will provide. As far as I know they only have standard edition which means I cannot use ISA. I was thinking of using squid authenticated against Active Directory. There is no budge for additional software. Does any one know of a different/better solution using either open source software or software that is available in Windows 2008 SBS? Thanks

  • Equivalent of Windows 7 Winkey+Left / Winkey+Right for Window Tiling in OSX

    Windows 7 has a neat feature where the Windows Key in conjunction with the arrow keys tiles the active window. Windows key + left arrow moves it to the left half, windows key + right arrow moves your window to the right half of your monitor. Is there an equivalent to this functionality in OS X? Can anyone suggest some alternative metaphors by which to manage my windows? I find that OSX windows tend to be a bit more scatterbrained than their windows counterparts.

  • When and why would Windows Explorer lock an external hard disk?

    I am quite surprised to see that Windows Explorer is locking my external hard disk. Is there any reason why explorer.exe is holding on to my external hard disk? Before I was trying to detach the external hard disk, I was opening a csproj file using Visual Studio 2008. I made sure that I closed down Visual Studio before trying to detach the external hard disk. There was no other active program except Google Chrome, from what I could see, that was running.

  • gvim Cannot make changes, 'modifiable' is off issues with file explorer.

    In gvim using netrw(the file explorer), I usually middle click a file to open it in the last active window. This just leads to an error stating "Cannot make changes, 'modifiable' is off". Another middle click, and the file opens fine where I expect it to. All buffers are saved, there's no uncommuted changes anywhere. What causes this, and what can I do about it ?   • IPvsadm not equally balancing on wlc scheduler

    For some reason, ipvsadm does not seem to be equally balancing the connections between my real servers when using the wlc or lc schedulers. One real server gets absolutely hammered with requests while the others receive relatively few connections.   • How to configure DNS so that www.example.com goes to one server, *.example.com to another

    I'm trying to set up my domain as follows, but I'm not actually sure if it's possible. I have a domain where I would like the base and www addresses to go to my static site, but others to go to my application server. For example: My domain is registered with Dreamhost, and my application is on a VPS at Webbynode. I've set up the domain in Dreamhost to use Webbynode's nameservers: ns1.dnswebby.com ns2.dnswebby.com ns3.dnswebby.com And in Webbynode I've set up a wildcard A record to point to the IP address of my VPS: * 1.2.3.4 A and this works nicely, if I go to app.example.com it resolves to my application server at Webbynode. However, what I'd like to do is have example.com and www.example.com go to my static site, hosted back at Dreamhost, whilst still having any other domain go to my app. What I've done to try and achieve this is set up these DNS "NS" entries at Webbynode, trying to get Dreamhost to resolve these domain names: (empty) ns1.dreamhost.com NS (empty) ns2.dreamhost.com NS (empty) ns3.dreamhost.com NS www ns1.dreamhost.com NS www ns2.dreamhost.com NS www ns3.dreamhost.com NS (I don't have a fixed IP address at Dreamhost so I can't just set up simple A records). However this doesn't work... does anyone have any idea if this is possible and if so how it could be done? Update: I've got this working now, as above for the domain (i.e. registered with Dreamhost, but using Webbynode's nameservers). To delegate the DNS for www.example.com to Dreamhost, I've got the following DNS entries set up: www.example.com. ns1.dreamhost.com. NS www.example.com. ns2.dreamhost.com. NS www.example.com. ns3.dreamhost.com. NS (note the full stops at the end) And to get example.com to resolve to my static site, I set up CNAME record: example.com. www.example.com. CNAME So now, example.com and www.example.com go to my static site on Dreamhost, and if they change the IP address of my shared hosting it won't affect me, and all other subdomains go to my application server. This seems to work nicely, but if anyone knows a better way to do it I'd be happy to hear it. Thanks to all who replied.

    I'm very interested in project honey pot. It seems like a smart way of blocking harversters etc from your web server. I found out about mod_httpbl for apache but I haven't find much to read about it other than on project honey pot's homepage. Doesn't seem like a very active project(?) Could someone with exeperience of httpbl tell me if mod_httpbl is good/bad or if there are other better alternatives?

    I have MSMQ installed on two Windows XP computers. Can I configure them to pass messages back and forth, or do I need an MSMQ server in the middle? If I need an MSMQ server, does the normal MSMQ with Win2003 able to act as that? And then, how do I connect my Windows XP to that Windows 2003 server?   • Open Google Reader links in background Safari tab?

    When you press the v keyboard shortcut in Google Reader, it opens a new tab. Regardless of the setting "When a new tab or window is opened, make it active" setting (Under Preferences Tabs), it becomes the frontmost tab when opened. Is there a way to have all tabs open in the background, like when you Cmd+click? (I'm aware of other alternative solutions, such as Firefox which handles this correctly, or a desktop RSS such as NetNewsWire/Vienna which have an "open links in background" option, but I like Google Reader's interface and wish to continue using it)

  • Setting up Virtual Hosts with Apache on Windows 2008 server for multiple sites. Complicated setup,

    Hey guys! I am setting up apache on my windows 2008 server at my home. It will serve 2 functions. Subversion hosting to allow me and some others to manage company documents with version control Local website hosting for web development. Will need to run several websites since I generally work on more then one site at a time. Heres what I have done so far. I set up subversion and apache 2.2 using some walk troughs. I changed the default port to 1337. (im a nerd) Using dyndns.com I created a domain to forward to my home ip which is dynamic. ( company.gotdns.org) I then went into my DNS for my company.com and added a record to point repo.company.com to company.gotdns.org At this point people who need access to my file repository can access by going to repo.company.com/repo which is good so far. My question comes on the next step, setting up virtual hosts with apache. Ideally I would like to have my local website be viewable by some others in the company from their homes. So, say I am working on site1, I would like to have them be able to view this by going site1.roeland.bythepixel.com. At the same time, I would like to have site10.wouter.bythepixel.com go to his local setup for site10. What I have done for this: I went into my DNS for company.com and added a record to point roeland.company.com to company.gotdns.org (which translates to my ip). I added code to my httpd-vhosts.conf (listed at bottom) I added code to my host file (listed at bottom) Hah, so of course this doenst work as excepted.. going to site1.roeland.bythepixel.com doesnt bring up my test1 site. Could anyone point me where I may be going wrong?   • Where is the plugins directory for Turnkey Trac?

    Hello, I setup a Turnkey Trac virtual machine and am trying to set up the LdapPlugin to use use authentication through a local Active Directory. I tried using easy_install http://trac-hacks.org/svn/ldapplugin/ to install it and it claimed to have completed, however when I go to the Admin page and go to plugins, it is not listed. I have never setup a Turnkey server like this before and was wondering in which directory the Trac plugins are located on the Turnkey-linux machine? Thanks, Tomek

It would either start/stop based on whether there is "anything worth recording" or maybe just record constantly but discard silent segments.
