• CA2104 annoyance.

  With the code below i get a CA2104 (DoNotDeclareReadOnlyMutableReferenceTypes) warning public readonly ReadOnlyCollection<char> IllegalChars; with part of the error message change the field to one that is an immutable reference type. If the reference type 'ReadOnlyCollection' is, in fact, immutable, exclude this message. I am sure ReadOnlyCollection is immutable but my question is is there a type can i use to not have this message appear?

  Hi there I' m working on a web application. That has a master page and two pages. These pages under the that master page. I am trying navigate that pages with a TreeView which on the master page. When i click to treeview node i can go to page which i want but there is no postback. But if i use linkbutton postback event happen. I use a break point on master page's pageload event. When i use treeview, v.s doesnt stop on break point line but if i use link button v.s stop on that line. How can i do postback with using treeview? Thanks for your helps

• Why does text from Assembly.GetManifestResourceStream() start with three junk characters?

  I have a SQL file added to my VS.NET 2008 project as an embedded resource. Whenever I use the following code to read the file's content, the string returned always starts with three junk characters and then the text I expect. I assume this has something to do with the Encoding.Default I am using, but that is just a guess. Why does this text keep showing up? • Creating line graph/chart in vb.net (VS2008)

  I am reluctant to ask this question because a lot of similar questions have been asked, but after reading through them I am not getting the info I need. I am trying to follow this tutorial and I think it is going to work ok, but I have a lot of data to put in and the tutorial has the reader create the chart data points manually. I want the data points to be generated from an integer which can change while the program is running (thus the chart size needs to change) and the y coordinate of the data points needs to come from an array. I have attempted to "bind" the data but I am messing it up somehow and I don't even think that is the best way to do what I want. Also, I do not have to use the methods suggested in the tutorial, I am looking for the highest quality most efficient way to generate a line graph in vb.net (VS2008) based on the criteria I previously mentioned.

• Error in WCF service - Silverlight client communication.

  I created a WCF service and I planned to consume this in a Silverlight application. So I created the WCF service in the Website host project. The service is a simple WCF service that only returns a number - something like a Hello World WCF-SL. So after adding a service reference in the silverlight client project to the Service URI, after calling async the service method (by using the generated proxy), I get the following exception in the callback method: An error occurred while trying to make a request to URI 'http://localhost:4566/SLService.svc'. This could be due to attempting to access a service in a cross-domain way without a proper cross-domain policy in place, or a policy that is unsuitable for SOAP services. You may need to contact the owner of the service to publish a cross-domain policy file and to ensure it allows SOAP-related HTTP headers to be sent. This error may also be caused by using internal types in the web service proxy without using the InternalsVisibleToAttribute attribute. Please see the inner exception for more details. I only created a HelloWorld WCF service with nothing else but a simple method that returns a dumb number and it's hosted on my locally. Must I have clientaccesspolicy.xml or crossdomain.xml? I acces my service locally. Every time I create a new simple/dumb WCF-SL solution, I get this error. I use VS2010 and Silverlight 4. I cannot get a simple/dumb WCF-SL solution working locally. Is there something wrong with the configuration? On another machine in the same network, it does work properly, so I assume something is misconfigured. Any thoughts?

  I'm pretty new to C++/CLI and I am trying to convert a System::String to a System::Char array. • Deploying an HttpHandler web service

  I am trying to build a webservice that manipulates http requests POST and GET. Most online references show making a website, but really, all I want to do is respond when an HttpPost is sent. I don't know what to put in the website, just want that code to run. Edit: I am following this site as its exactly what I'm trying to do. I have the website set up, I have the code for the handler in a .cs file, i have edited the web.config to add the handler for the file extension I need. Now I am at the step 3 where you tell IIS about this extension and map it to ASP.NET. Also I am using IIS 7 so interface is slightly different than the screenshots. This is the problem I have: 1) Go to website 2) Go to handler mappings 3) Go Add Script Map 4) request path - put the extension I want to handle 5) Executable- it seems i am told to set aspnet_isapi.dll here. Maybe this is incorrect? 6) Give name 7) Hit OK button: Add Script Map Do you want to allow this ISAPI extension? Click "Yes" to add the extension with an "Allowed" entry to the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions list or to update an existing extension entry to "Allowed" in the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions list. Yes No Cancel 8) Hit Yes Add Script Map The specified module required by this handler is not in the modules list. If you are adding a script map handler mapping, the IsapiModule or the CgiModule must be in the modules list. OK edit 2: Have just figured out that that managed handler had something to do with handlers witten in managed code, script map was to help configuring an executable and module mapping to work with http Modules. So I should be using option 1 - Add Managed Handler. See: http://yfrog.com/11managedhandlerp I know what my request path is for the file extension... and I know name (can call it whatever I like), so it must be the Type field I am struggling with. In the applications folder (in IIS) so far I just have the MyHandler.cs and web.config (Of course also a file with the extension I am trying to create the handler for!) edit3: progress So now I have the code and the web.config set up I test to see If I can browse to the filename.CustomExtension file: HTTP Error 404.3 - Not Found The page you are requesting cannot be served because of the extension configuration. If the page is a script, add a handler. If the file should be downloaded, add a MIME map. So in IIS7 I go to Handler Mappings and add it in.   Seems like this would be a common question, though I could not find it on SO. Which version of MSXML should I use in my applications, and more importantly, how should I decide? There is MSXML3, 4, 5 and 6. I recently posted some code in calling-wcf-service-by-vbscript that used MSXML v4. AnthonyWJones posted that I shouldn't use 4, but instead 3 or 6, but probably 3. Certainly not v5! Why? I'd like to know more about the criteria for selecting the version of MSXML to use in my apps. Bonus question: Does anyone have a summary of the differences between the various versions of MSXML over time? Summary so far: MSXML6 Should be first choice. was released in 2006, and includes perf and compliance fixes. Use this if you can. It's good. There are no merge modules; to bundle the MSXML6 runtime with your app, MS suggests packaging the MSXML6 msi file. MSXML6 is an upgrade from MSXML3/4 but does not replace them, because it discontinues some features. You can get the MSI here. MSXML3 Second choice. Most widely deployed version. Originally shipped in March 2000. Actively maintained, no new features. Currently supported, if you are on SP5 (shipped in 2005) or later. SP7 is current (also from 2005). MSXML5 was released only as part of MS-Office. Currently supported by Microsoft, but only as part of Office, not for building apps. Don't build apps that depend on MSXML5: Verboten. MSXML4 originally shipped? Currently in "maintenance mode". Microsoft is encouraging people to move off MSXML4 to MSXML6. • Best practice for structuring a new large ASP.NET MVC2 plus EF4 VS2010 solution?

  Hi, we are building a new web application using Microsoft ASP.NET MVC2 and Entity Framework 4. Although I am sure there is not one right answer to my question, we are struggling to agree a VS2010 solution structure. The application will use SQL Server 2008 with a possible future Azure cloud version. We are using EF4 with T4 POCOs (model-first) and accessing a number of third-party web-services. We will also be connecting to a number of external messaging systems. UI is based on standard ASP.NET (MVC) with jQuery. In future we may deliver a Silverlight/WPF version - as well as mobile. So put simply, we start with a VS2010 blank solution - then what? I have suggested 4 folders Data (the EF edmx file etc), Domain (entities, repositories), Services (web-services access), Presentation (web ui etc). However under Presentation, creating the ASP.NET MVC2 project obviously creates it's own Models folder etc and it just doesn't seem to fit too well in this proposed structure. I'm also missing a business layer (or does this sit in the domain?). Again I am sure there is no one right way to do it, but I'd really appreciate your views on this. Thanks

• MSI wrapper for msdeploy?

  Just moved to vs2010 and found that deployment is quite different. The old way I did things (vs2008) was as follows: 1) I right-click on my web app and "Add web deployment project" 2) Start a web setup project, dump that web deployment project output in it, and add any custom installer actions (connection strings or other user input) as necessary using the custom installer class. Easy! Now that I don't have the "Add web deployment project" option (or can't find it!?!?), msdeploy seems to be the thing to do. I have successfully got this to work via command line, but I still need some custom actions. In this example, we have separated our web services deployment from our UI deployment (Silverlight) so that they can be hosted separately or together. So... during/after install I need to know from the user where the web services are located. So I tried this: 1) Start a web setup project, and include all of the deploy package files (.deploy.cmd, /setparameters.xml, etc) 2) Gather user input in my custom installer class, and shell execute the deploy.cmd. Problem is... the deploy fails on deleting the zip file since it's use by another process (I assume it's my installer). Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this? Or is there a better way to accomplish this task? Any input would be appreciated! Nate

• Cannot get assembly version for footer

  I'm using the automatic build versioning mentioned in this question (not the selected answer but the answer that uses the [assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.*")] technique). I'm doing this in the footer of my Site.Master file in MVC 2. My code for doing this is as follows: <div id="footer"> <a href="emailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a> - Copyright © 2005-<%= DateTime.Today.Year.ToString() %>, foo LLC. All Rights Reserved. - Version: <%= Assembly.GetEntryAssembly().GetName().Version.ToString() %> </div> The exception I get is a Object reference not set to an instance of an object because GetEntryAssembly() returns NULL. My other options don't work either. GetCallingAssembly() always returns "4.0.0.0" and GetExecutingAssembly() always returns "0.0.0.0". When I go look at my DLLs, everything is versioning as I would expect. But I cannot figure out how to access it to display in my footer!!

  Hi, I am trying to write a small app to connect and manipulate some data on an SQL 2008 Express database. The database is on my local machine but I can see it on the network. I am trying to use LINQ to SQL in my app. I am trying to connect to the database so I can add database model to use with LINQ but the problem is I can not see any databases inside the SQL Server, which is on my machine. I tried using Windows Auth and also tried SQL Server Auth with no luck. Can someone please assist me? What am I missing?

I've done so via <ConfigurationToBuild Include="Debug|Mixed Platforms"> <FlavorToBuild>Debug</FlavorToBuild> <PlatformToBuild>Mixed Platforms</PlatformToBuild> </ConfigurationToBuild> Problem though, the asp.net assets(eg. script folders, imgs, etc.) are not copied to the deployment folder. Folder(_PublishedWebsites) only contains the binaries references of the app plus the pre-compiled web services. Is there a way to include said folders/files to the deployment folder? Thanks

• Share c# class source code between several projects

  I have written a class that will handle internal logging in my application. Now I want to use this class in another new and totally separate project. I could simply copy the file to the new project folder, but I would like to only have one copy of it to maintain so that all changes in it will apply to both projects over time. I can use the "add existing file", but where do I put the file so that the next developer knows that it is required. I have once had a "shared" folder for this but one time that folder was not brought into the next development computer. What is the best way to organize this so that it makes most sense for new maintainers and minimizes the risk for broken links in projects.

• Circular file references not allowed

  Hi, I am having a problem in building my solution in VS2008. Normally, it compiles fine in the environment. Sometimes, it fails with: /xxx_WEB/secure/CMSManagedTargetPage.aspx(1): error ASPPARSE: Circular file references are not allowed. I rebuild and it works fine. Now, however, I am in the middle of setting up a CruiseControl.NET system and am testing my checked out code with MSBuild before I integrate the build into CC. Now, everytime I MSBuild, I get: "Q:\cc\xxx\checked out from svn\xxx.sln" (default target) (1) -> (xxx_WEB target) -> /xxx_WEB/secure/CMSManagedTargetPage.aspx(1): error ASPPARSE: Circular file references are not allowed. Problem is, I can't see where this reference is. I have searched for the reference across the entire solution and canf ind no references to the page itself (CMSManagedTargetPage) anywhere other than in the page or its codebehind, or within a string, eg: C:\dev2008\xxx\IWW.xxx.ASPNET\AspxHttpHandler.cs(82): inputFile = context.Server.MapPath("~/secure/CMSManagedTargetPage.aspx"); C:\dev2008\xxx\IWW.xxx.ASPNET\AspxHttpHandler.cs(83): virtualPath = "~/secure/CMSManagedTargetPage.aspx"; My assembly references are also fine (as far as I know). My Web Application is at the "top" of the dependencies, and nothing references it and therefore the faulting page so cannot cause a circular reference. Of course, the page itself may reference something such as a UserControl within the same assembly/web site, but as mentioned earlier, a search on CMSManagedTargetPage yielded no results so this is not happening. Changing the batch attribute in web.config had no effect on MSBuild. I find it very odd that it "sometimes" fails in VS and always fails in MSBuild. Am I missing some subtlety?

• SQL 2000 Not Supported by .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server in VS2010's Server Explorer D

  Just tried creating a data connection to a SQL 2000 database in VS2010's Server Explorer using a .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server (versus OLE) and found that it didn't work. VS2010 complained that I had to use SQL Server 2005 and up. This used to work in VS2008 (using .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server instead of the .NET Framework Data Provider for OLE DB). Is this just a VS2010 restriction or has the ability to connect to SQL 2000 with .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server been obsoleted in a post-2.0 version of .NET being used by VS2010? Anyone know why this was done by MS (please don't speculate - I can do that myself ;)?
