Usability for content editors: Drupal or PHP framework?

Greetings: I am going to develop a basic Web site that supports some custom content types, is multilingual, and has content moderation workflow for a restricted group of content editors. This seems like an obvious choice for Drupal, except... the content editors will have little computer experience. In my opinion, that is a show-stopper for Drupal. For example, placing arbitrary inline images in content is a task that WordPress does well. I find Drupal's alternatives (IMCE, img_assist, etc.) clunky and not well integrated, and that will be a problem for this group of content editors. Also, none of the Drupal content workflow modules I tried seemed well-integrated; they all had a "tacked on" feel to them. As an admin I can understand why an "Accessible content" menu item (via Module Grants module) is necessary to view draft content (fixed in D7 but I can't wait for all the modules to be ported), but I'm pretty sure it'll confuse the content editors. An alternative is to use a PHP framework. I've read a few threads suggesting that it will take roughly the same amount of time using a good framework as it will to bend Drupal to my willing... maybe wishful thinking? I'm looking at Symfony, which gives me a basic auto-generated back-end, but which I believe I can customize to my heart's content. How do you make Drupal accessible to non-savvy content editors? If you recommend a PHP framework, which one? TIA!

Follow the links of the tab in jquery ui tab

Hello, I have jquery tabs like <ul id="tabsList"> <li><a href="#tab-1">Name 1</a></li> <li><a href="#tab-2">Name 2</a></li> <li><a href="http://www.google.com/">Name 3</a></li> </ul> <div id="tab-1">content 1</div> <div id="tab-2">content 2</div> the first two tabs load the respective divs. But the third one should go to google.com, instead it does nothing. It just adds http://example.com/index.html#ui-tabs-[object Object] to the url. I am developing a wordpress plugin and the admin page needs a tab interface. I tested this in a local server and not working update: i don't want to load google.com inside the page. It should open the webpage in new tab/window like ordinary links do.

Overriding deep functions in javascript

I'm quite new to javascript but have undertaken a task to get better aquainted with it. However, I am running into some problems with jQuery. The following javascript is the code that is in a third party jQuery plugin and I would love to be able to override the funFunction() function here to do my own implementation. Is this possible, if so, how can I do it? I've been doing a fair amount of searching and have tried a number of methods for overriding the function using things like: jQuery.blah.funFunction = funtion() { alert("like this"); }; Main code: (function($) { $.extend( { blah: new function() { this.construct = = function(settings) { //Construct... stuff }; function funFunction() { //Function I want to override } } }); })(jQuery); For those further interested I am trying to override tablesorter so that the only way a user can sort a column is in ascending order only. Edit: There is a wordpress installation that uses WP-Table-Reloaded which in turn uses this plugin. I don't want to change the core code for this plugin because if there was ever an update I would then have to make sure that my predecessor knew exactly what I had done. I've been programming for a long time and feel like I should easily be able to pick up javascript whilst also looking at jQuery. I know exactly what I need to do for this, just not how I can override this function.

Drupal 6 node_view empty

I'm trying to produce a page with a list of specific nodes but the node_view returns an empty string. I have used the blog.module as a reference, but what am I missing here?

Reduce size and change text color of the bootstrap-datepicker field

Programing an Android application based on HTML5/JQuery launching in a web view, I'm using the Eternicode's bootstrap-datepicker. BTW I'm using Jquery 1.9.1 and Bootstrap 2.3.2 with bootstrap-responsive. The picker is working fine but unfortunately I get yet two issues which I was not able to solve at this time: the picker theme is not respected and some dates are not readable (see the attached picture). Some there is css conflict such as the datepicker's font is displayed white on white background. I'm not able to reduce the size of the date picker field such as it holds on alone row. jQuery UI slider coming out looking wierd

Is there any way to change my script or add an catch all to the web.config that forwards the URL to my script? When I use "http://subdomain.domain.com/weblog/year/month/what-ever-article.html" in oldURL string, then the redirect works just fine... so I must have some IIS or web.config settings wrong. segfault during __cxa_allocate_exception in SWIG wrapped library

While developing a SWIG wrapped C++ library for Ruby, we came across an unexplained crash during exception handling inside the C++ code. I'm not sure of the specific circumstances to recreate the issue, but it happened first during a call to std::uncaught_exception, then after a some code changes, moved to __cxa_allocate_exception during exception construction. Neither GDB nor valgrind provided any insight into the cause of the crash. I've found several references to similar problems, including: http://wiki.fifengine.de/Segfault_in_cxa_allocate_exception http://forums.fifengine.de/index.php?topic=30.0 http://code.google.com/p/osgswig/issues/detail?id=17 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libavg/+bug/241808 The overriding theme seems to be a combination of circumstances: A C application is linked to more than one C++ library More than one version of libstdc++ was used during compilation Generally the second version of C++ used comes from a binary-only implementation of libGL The problem does not occur when linking your library with a C++ application, only with a C application The "solution" is to explicitly link your library with libstdc++ and possibly also with libGL, forcing the order of linking. After trying many combinations with my code, the only solution that I found that works is the LD_PRELOAD="libGL.so libstdc++.so.6" ruby scriptname option. That is, none of the compile-time linking solutions made any difference. My understanding of the issue is that the C++ runtime is not being properly initialized. By forcing the order of linking you bootstrap the initialization process and it works. The problem occurs only with C applications calling C++ libraries because the C application is not itself linking to libstdc++ and is not initializing the C++ runtime. Because using SWIG (or boost::python) is a common way of calling a C++ library from a C application, that is why SWIG often comes up when researching the problem. Is anyone out there able to give more insight into this problem? Is there an actual solution or do only workarounds exist? Thanks.

How To Find Reasons of Why Site Goes Online/Offline

Seems today a website I manage has been going online and offline throughout the entire day. I have no idea what is causing the issue so I am seeking guidance on where to start. It is a Wordpress based site. So here is what I DO know: I use a program that pings the server every minute and when the server is not responding me it emails me, so I can know exactly when the site is online and offline. The site between 8pm to 12pm 12.28, and around the 1a hour early morning 12.29 (New York City timezone, and all times below are in same timezone). At the time of the ups/downs I see a lot of strain on the memory usage. Look at the load average when the site is going online/offline (http://screencast.com/t/BRlfXkqrbJII). Then I ran this command to restart http (http://screencast.com/t/usVtYWZ2Qi) and the memory usage then goes down to this (http://screencast.com/t/VdTIy3bgZiQB). An hour after I restarted http, the site then went offline/online so restarting the http didn't do much help. When the site is going offline/online, I ran the top command and get this (http://screencast.com/t/zEwr7YQj3). Here is a top command when the site is at it's lowest (http://screencast.com/t/eaMfha9lbT - so this would be dubbged "normal"). Here is a bandwidth report (http://screencast.com/t/AS0h2CH1Gypq). The traffic doesn't seem to be that much (http://screencast.com/t/s7hrWNNic1K), but looking at my times the site is going up/down this may be one of the reasons? I have the dvp Nitro package at Media Temple (http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/nitro/). So at this point I would request some help in trying to figure out what the cause of this is, and how I can go about pinpointing this issue. ANY HELP is greatly appreciated.

Tinymce mceToggleEditor scroll/focus issue

I have 50+ textareas that I am using tinyMCE with. Personal Cache vs Memcache?

I have a personal caching class, which can be seen here ( based off WordPress' ): http://pastie.org/988427 I recently learned about memcache and it said to memcache EVERYTHING: http://highscalability.com/blog/2010/5/17/7-lessons-learned-while-building-reddit-to-270-million-page.html My first thought was just to keep my class with the current functions and make it use memcache instead -- is there any downside to doing this? The main difference I see is that memcache stays on with the server from page to page, while mine is for 1 page load. The problem I see arising, and this is with any system, is that they're dynamic. They change all the time. Whether its search results, visible products, etc. etc. If it's all cached, won't the create a problem? Is there a way to handle this? Obviously if something is bringing back the same results everytime it would be cached, but that's why I was doing it on a per page load basis. I'm sure there is a way to handle this, or is the cache time usually set between 5 minutes and an hour?

jQuery Tablesorter - column not sorting alphabetically

I'm not sure what's going wrong here. This is the page: http://www.utexas.edu/ssw/cswr/projects/project-list/ The first column sorts, but it isn't returning data in the correct order (alphabetical). The table itself is being generated by a custom PHP function that pulls info from a WordPress database. I thought that might be the issue, but as you can see the fourth column (End Date) sorts correctly. I also thought it might be the links in the first column that were messing things up, but adding the text-extraction code from this page broke the sorting altogether. TinyMce imagemanager won't generate image path when used with an iframe

I have successfully setup tinymce to work on a page within an iframe. Everything works perfectly. However, when you use imagemanager to pick an image to be inserted or replaced in the editor it will not copy the path(and filename) of the image to the "Image URL" input in the "Insert/edit image" box. The box will either remain empty or keep the address of the previous image. Non-wiki CMS for an online user guide

For a large web application I'm building, I need to create an extensive user guide. The first thought was a wiki, but what I've seen lacks the ease of customization I've seen in CMSs, and has a lot of extra features I don't need. The number of users editing the document is small and closed, but it needs to be editable by non-technical users. The number of pages will likely be between 50-100. It also needs to be searchable. It would also be a plus if it had nice readable urls to link to from our web app. Right now, my best guess is WordPress, but that seems a lot more geared towards blogging with just a handful of pages, than having several pages, and possibly no blogs. There isn't a language requirement, although we have the most experience with Java and PHP. We aren't looking to have to do any major coding other than customizing for visuals, so hopefully the language will not be too important. Again, I'm not looking for the best general purpose CMS, just something that would be easiest for a user guide.

PHP script not automatically updating when moved to another server

A friend built a ranking system on his site and I am trying to host in on mine via WordPress and Go Daddy. It updates for him but when I load it to my site, it works for 6 hours, but as soon as the reload is supposed to occur, it errors and I get a 500 timeout error. Any idea why this might be happening? Any settings that I might need to change? Here is the top of the index.php file. I'm not sure which part of any of it is messing up. View Models (ViewData), UserControls/Partials and Global variables - best practice?

Hi I'm trying to figure out a good way to have 'global' members (such as CurrentUser, Theme etc.) in all of my partials as well as in my views. I don't want to have a logic class that can return this data (like BL.CurrentUser) I do think it needs to be a part of the Model in my views So I tried inheriting from BaseViewData with these members. In my controllers, in this way or another (a filter or base method in my BaseController), I create an instance of the inheriting class and pass it as a view data. Everything's perfect till this point, cause then I have my view data available on the main View with the base members. But what about partials? If I have a simple partial that needs to display a blog post then it looks like this: <%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" Inherits="ViewUserControl<Post>" %> and simple code to render this partial in my view (that its model.Posts is IEnumerable<Post>): <%foreach (Post p in this.Model.Posts) {%> <%Html.RenderPartial("Post",p); %> <%}%> Since the partial's Model isn't BaseViewData, I don't have access to those properties. Hence, I tried to make a class named PostViewData which inherits from BaseViewData, but then my containing views will have a code to actually create the PostViewData in them in order to pass it to the partial: <%Html.RenderPartial("Post",new PostViewData { Post=p,CurrentUser=Model.CurrentUser,... }); %> Or I could use a copy constructor <%Html.RenderPartial("Post",new PostViewData(Model) { Post=p }); %> I just wonder if there's any other way to implement this before I move on. Changing the parameters of a Javascript function using GreaseMonkey

There are a lot of questions here about Greasemonkey, but I didn't see anything directly related to my question. I'm on a website that uses a text editor control, and it's really annoying that they don't allow horizontal resizing (only vertical). So if you are using a cheapo projector that only supports 1024x768, the text runs off of the screen and there's nothing you can do about it. Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong? Is this even possible?

OK, so I bought a 46" screen for the office yesterday, and with the imminent risk of being accused for setting up an "elaborate World Cup procrastination scheme", I'd better show my colleagues what it's meant for ;) Looking at my simple sketch, and at these great projects from which I was inspired, I would like to get some input on the following: Pseudocode for the skeleton: As some methods should be called every 24 hours ("Today's date in the heading"), others at 60 second intervals ("Twitter results"), what would be a good approach using JavaScript (jQuery) and PHP? EDIT: Alsciende: I can agree that #1 and #8 are too vague. Therefore I remove #8 and try to clarify #1: With "Pseudocode for the skeleton", I basically mean could this be done entirely using JavaScript timers and how would you set up the various timers? Library for Google Analytics: Which libraries support the Google Analytics API and can produce neat charts. Preferably HTML5, JavaScript-based like Protovis. Library for Twitter: Which libraries would you recommend for fetching twitter search results and latest tweets from profiles. Libraries for Typography/CSS/HTML5: Trying to learn some HTML5 etc. in the process, please advice on any other typography/css libraries that could be of relevance. Scraping/Parsing? I'll give you a concrete example: Trying to fetch today's menu from this restaurant's website, how would you go about? (it's in Swedish - but you get the point - sorry ;) ) Real-time stats? I'm using the WassUp-plugin for WordPress to track real-time visitors on our website. Other logging software (AWStats etc.) is probably also installed on the webserver. Any ideas on how to extract information from these and present in real-time on the dashboard? Browser choice? Which Browser and OS would you pick? Stable, Full-screen, HTML5.

Does this language feature already exists?

I'm currently developing a new language for programming in a continuous environment (compare it to electrical engineering), and I've got some ideas on a certain language construction. Let me explain the feature by explanation and then by definition; x = a | b; Where x is a variable and a and b are other variables (or static values). if(x == a) { // all references to "x" are essentially references to "a". } if(x == b) { // same but with "b" } if(x != a) { // ... } if(x == a | b) { // guaranteed that "x" is '"a" | "b"'; interacting with "x" // will interact with both "a" and "b". } // etc. In the above, all code-blocks are executed, but the "scope" changes in each block how x is interpreted. In the first block, x is guaranteed to be a: thus interacting with x inside that block will interact on a. The second and the third code-block are only equal in this situation (because not b only remains a). The last block guarantees that x is at least a or b. Further more; | is not the "bitwise or operator", but I've called it the "and/or"-operator. It's definition is: "|" = "and" | "or" (On my blog, http://cplang.wordpress.com/2009/12/19/binop-and-or/, is more (mathematical) background information on this operator. It's loosely based on sets.) I do not know if this construction already exists, so that's my question: does this language feature already exists?

Trying to find a PHP5 API-based embeddable CMS

I've been making the rounds for a CMS that I can use as an API, in a sort of "embedded" mode. I mean by this that I don't want the CMS to do any logic or presentation. I want it to be used as an API, which I can then use within an existing site. I don't want to be tied to the architecture of the CMS. A good example of this is NC-CMS (http://www.nconsulting.ca/nc-cms/). All it needs is an include at the top, then wherever editable content is desired it's only a function call with a unique label. It's also perfect in the sense that it allows to differentiate between small strings (like titles, labels) and texts (which require a rich-text editor). It's the only CMS I found that fits this description, but it is a little too light as it does not handle site structure. I need to be able to allow my client to add pages, choosing an existing template for the layout. A minimal back-end is required. Wordpress also fits some requirements in that it handles only content editing and allows freedom for the themes by letting them call the content where and how they want it. But it is article-based and backwards, in that it embeds sites (as themes) within its structure, rather than being embeddable in sites like NC. It's funny how checking out all the CMS out there, almost all of them claim that most CMS are not self-sufficient, that they do not handle application logic, while (almost) every single on I found with only one exception do so. Many are mostly article-based blog engines, which does not fit my need. I would appreciate any CMS that fits the general description.

Building a custom CMS, how to handle page settings?

Not a coldfusion specific question so answer however you can. I've inherited a ColdFusion project where at the top of every page various page-setting specific variables are set, such as: <cfset request.page.title = "Example Page"> <cfset request.page.machineTitle = "example_page"> <cfset request.page.isJQueryEnabled = 1> <cfset request.page.showNavigation = 1> <cfset request.page.SWFObjectVersion = 2.2> I'm thinking about creating a database table with just integer page_id varchar key varchar value I'd reduce the variables at the top of every page to just the page id, and then call the DB for the correct settings. Is this a good idea? I hate reinventing the wheel, but this is a really big project that would require many months for a full content migration to a CMS. What are the current practices for storing page settings? (e.g., what does WordPress do? Drupal? etc.)

gcc, strict-aliasing, and horror stories

So far, the answer seems to be No. This question is broader: do you have any horror stories about gcc and strict-aliasing? Background: Quoting from AndreyT's answer in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2771023/c99-strict-aliasing-rules-in-c-gcc/2771041#2771041: "Strict aliasing rules are rooted in parts of the standard that were present in C and C++ since the beginning of [standardized] times. The clause that prohibits accessing object of one type through a lvalue of another type is present in C89/90 (6.3) as well as in C++98 (3.10/15). ... It is just that not all compilers wanted (or dared) to enforce it or rely on it." Well, gcc is now daring to do so, with its -fstrict-aliasing switch. And this has caused some problems. Nested hyperlinks in XHTML 1.1 document

Hi, I'm doing a simple widget for WordPress that fetches the most recent tweets from the RSS feed provided by Twitter. This widget parses any link posted on a tweet, it also parses mentions (ie: @username) and trending topics (ie: #nowplaying). For these 3 situations, it creates links pointing to some Twitter feature. For instance: "Hi @UserA, check out the song Foo from FooBar that I'm listening, it's awesome. #nowplaying" And it will parse into this: Hi <a href="http://twitter.com/UserA">@UserA</a>, check out the song Foo from FooBar that I'm listening, it's awesome. <a href="http://twitter.com/#search?q=nowplaying">#nowplaying</a> Now now I need to add a global link to the whole message, like this: <a href="http://twitter.com/UserA/statuses/1234567890"> Hi <a href="http://twitter.com/UserA">@UserA</a>, check out the song Foo from FooBar that I'm listening, it's awesome. <a href="http://twitter.com/#search?q=nowplaying">#nowplaying</a> </a> But this code does not validate and it doesn't work anyways (the browsers don't really seem to know what to do with it). Any suggestions how could I fix this?
