  • If my application doesn't use a lot of memory, can I ignore viewDidUnload:?

    - by iPhoneToucher
    My iPhone app generally uses under 5MB of living memory and even in the most extreme conditions stays under 8MB. The iPhone 2G has 128MB of RAM and from what I've read an app should only expect to have 20-30MB to use. Given that I never expect to get anywhere near the memory limit, do I need to care about memory warnings and setting objects to nil in viewDidUnload:? The only way I see my app getting memory warnings is if something else on the phone is screwing with the memory, in which case the entire phone would be acting silly. I built my app without ever using viewDidUnload:, so there's more than a hundred classes that I'd need to inspect and add code to if I did need to implement it.

  • Global NSMutableArray doesn't seem to be holding values

    - by diatrevolo
    I have a Cocos2D iPhone application that requires a set of CGRects overlaid on an image to detect touches within them. "Data" below is a class that holds values parsed from an XML file. "delegateEntries" is a NSMutableArray that contains several "data" objects, pulled from another NSMutableArray called "entries" that lives in the application delegate. For some strange reason, I can get at these values without problems in the init function, but further down the class in question, I try to get at these values, and the application crashes without an error message (as an example, I put in the "ccTouchBegan" method which accessess this data through the "populateFieldsForTouchedItem" method. Can anyone see why these values would not be accessible from other methods? No objects get released until dealloc. Thanks in advance! @synthesize clicked, delegate, data, image, blurImage, normalImage, arrayOfRects, delegateEntries; - (id)initWithTexture:(CCTexture2D *)aTexture { if( (self=[super initWithTexture:aTexture] )) { arrayOfRects = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; delegateEntries = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; delegate = (InteractivePIAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; delegateEntries = [delegate entries]; data = [delegateEntries objectAtIndex:0]; NSLog(@"Assigning %@", [[delegateEntries objectAtIndex:0] backgroundImage]); NSLog(@"%@ is the string", [[data sections] objectAtIndex:0]); //CGRect rect; NSLog(@"Count of array is %i", [delegateEntries count]); //collect as many items as there are XML entries for(int i=0; i<[delegateEntries count]; i++) { if([[delegateEntries objectAtIndex:i] xPos]) { NSLog(@"Found %i items", i+1); [arrayOfRects addObject:[NSValue valueWithCGRect:CGRectMake([[[delegateEntries objectAtIndex:i] xPos] floatValue], [[[delegateEntries objectAtIndex:i] yPos] floatValue], [[[delegateEntries objectAtIndex:i] xBounds] floatValue], [[[delegateEntries objectAtIndex:i] yBounds] floatValue])]]; } else { NSLog(@"Nothing"); } } //remove the following once the NSMutableArray from above works (legacy) blurImage = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:[data backgroundBlur]]; NSLog(@"5"); normalImage = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:[data backgroundImage]]; clicked = NO; } return self; } And then: - (void)populateFieldsForTouchedItem:(TouchedRect)touchInfo { Data *touchDatum = [[Data alloc] init]; touchDatum = [[self delegateEntries] objectAtIndex:touchInfo.recordNumber]; NSLog(@"Assigning %@", [[[self delegateEntries] objectAtIndex:touchInfo.recordNumber] backgroundImage]); rect = [[arrayOfRects objectAtIndex:touchInfo.recordNumber] CGRectValue]; image = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:[[touchDatum sections] objectAtIndex:0]]; [touchDatum release]; } - (BOOL)ccTouchBegan:(UITouch *)touch withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { TouchedRect touchInfo = [self containsTouchLocation:touch]; NSLog(@"Information pertains to %i", touchInfo.recordNumber); if ( !touchInfo.touched && !clicked ) { //needed since the touch location changes when zoomed NSLog(@"NOPE"); return NO; } [self populateFieldsForTouchedItem:touchInfo]; NSLog(@"YEP"); return YES; }

  • iPhone UIImage Display Controller

    - by Bill Shiff
    Hello, I would like to be able to display a UIImage from within my app and support a lot of the functionality available in the built-in Photos app (i.e., pinch-to-zoom, pan, etc). I don't really want to write a bunch of code that someone has already written, so I'm wondering if there is a library out there already that I could just import into my project. I'm aware of the Three20 project, but I don't want to import a huge library if I don't have to. Is anyone aware of an available library that's already out there for displaying UIImages? Or part of some open-source project that can be pulled out on its own? Thanks!

  • Extra retain counts after initWithNibName

    - by optimisticmonkey
    I have extra retain counts after calling initWithNib. What could cause this? (There are no referencing outlets in the nib) StepViewController *stepViewController = [[StepViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"StepViewController" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:stepViewController animated:YES]; [stepViewController release]; NSLog(@"nextStep stepViewController retain count %i", [stepViewController retainCount]); the above results in a retain count of 3... Thanks for any advice on how to troubleshoot

  • Hiding UITableViewCell

    Is there a way to hide a UITableView cell? I'm looking for some property or method I can invoke on the UITableViewCell returned by a synchronous cellForRowAtIndexPath() to hide it and make it unselectable by the user.

  • iPhone UIImage number recognition

    - by Skeep
    Hi All, I have a small UIImage (jpg) with a single typed number. I want to be able to read the number with some kind of pattern recognition. I'm really not sure where to start, so any help would be appreciated. my initial idea was to compare this image with other images. For instance compare the image with that of a 1,2,3, etc until a match was found. That just seems slow and cumbersome and wondered if there was a better way to do it? Thanks

  • Should I always release self for failed init methods?

    - by leo
    Should I always release self when there is a failure inside init, or should I only do so if I have initialized instance variables first? To put it another way, is this pattern valid? Is there a time when I shouldn't release self inside an init method, or should I assume that if the control flow enters init, self has at least a retain count of 1? - (id)init { if ((self = [super init]) == nil) { [self release]; return nil; } //do some init stuff if (somethingFailed) { [self release]; return nil; } return self; }

  • How can we know which cell is touched in tablView when a custom button in the cell is touched ?

    - by srikanth rongali
    I need to know which cell is touched when any button inside the cell is touched. I have custom UIButton *button1 in the cell and UIButton *button2 on the cell.imageView.image of the cell. I wrote selectors for both buttons.; But, I could not differentiate the buttons for each cell. How do I know which cell button was touched. What to do, to know that a particular cell's button was touched ? Thank you.

  • Finding user location before map loads

    - by 4thSpace
    I'm trying to find the user's location using: CLLocationCoordinate2D _location; CLLocation *userLoc = nil; if(appDelegate.clLocationManager.locationServicesEnabled){ userLoc = mapView.userLocation.location; _location = userLoc.coordinate; } The problem is that I haven't yet initialized the map so the above doesn't work. Is there a way to get the user's location without using mapkit? Or should I be using a different technique?

  • Two way binding when setter is overriden

    - by Nicolas Goy
    I have an NSTextField bound to some object "zoom" property. In this object's class implementation, I have the following - (void)setZoom:(CGFloat)zoom { _zoom = MAX(0, MIN(10, zoom)); } If I write "-5" in the textfield, setZoom: will be called with "-5" as argument and _zoom will be set to 0. Then problem is that the textfield is not updating itself and it shows "-5" instead of re-reading the property value it has just set. If I do myObject.zoom = -5; in code, the text field will display 0 correctly. I tried to wrap _zoom =... inside willChangeValueForKey/didChangeValueForKey calls but it didn't change anything.

  • UISegmentedControl - how to toggle between 2 UITableViews

    - by embedded
    I have a tab bar based application. What is the best way to toggle between 2 different UITableView views? Should I use a wrapper view and add those 2 views to it and depending on which segment was chosen I will show the correct view? Using only one tableView will not work because the layout is different between those 2 tableviews. Thanks

  • Perform selector on paren NSOperation

    - by user326943
    I extend NSOperation (call it A) which contains NSOperationQueue for other NSOperations (which is another extended class different from A, call these operations B). When operation A is running (executing B operations) how do i call a specific function/method on operation A when certain event takes place on B operations? For example every operation B that finishes it calls a function on operation A returning itself? *Nested NSOperation and NSOperationQueue(s) Thanks

  • Blur CALayer's Superlayer

    - by eaigner
    Hi. I've got a CALayer and a sublayer in it. What i want to achieve is a blur of the superlayer (the area under the sublayer), just like the standard sheets do it. I've tried to set a .compositingFilter on the sublayer but this doesn't seem to work. Any ideas how to solve this?

  • How can I make a GUI frontend to a command line tool in OSX?

    - by bfred.it
    I'm dying to know how I can make a GUI for ffmpeg and jhead in OSX. I've been looking for a solution for a while and thought you, stackoverflow's users, could help me. Maybe you know some document I haven't come across of or, better, a tutorial to make a GUI. I love those two tools but I like the simplicity of drag/drop operations. Note: I don't need a GUI for them, I want to make one.

  • Return NSWindow to Normal Level

    - by PF1
    Hi Everyone: I have an NSWindow that I want to go above the captured kCGDirectMainDisplay when a function is run and have the window go back to its normal level after the display is released. My code works for capturing the display, setting the window's level, and releasing the display, however once the display is released, the window floats above all other windows. I have included my method of doing this, in case I am doing something wrong. Capture the display CGDisplayCapture(kCGDirectMainDisplay); [self.window setLevel:CGShieldingWindowLevel()]; Release the display CGDisplayRelease(kCGDirectMainDisplay) [self.window setLevel:NSNormalWindowLevel]; Thanks for any help!

  • Problems with UITableView when loading the view into the main window

    - by GuidoMB
    I've created a sub class of UITableViewController named LoginViewController with the XIB file using XCode. Then I opened the XIB file with IB and set the table's style to grouped. Finally I wrote the following code: - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application { LoginViewController *loginViewController = [[LoginViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"LoginViewController" bundle:[NSBundle mainBundle]]; [window addSubview: loginViewController.view]; window.backgroundColor = [UIColor blueColor]; [window makeKeyAndVisible]; [window layoutSubviews]; } I set the window's background color to blue for you to see what the problem is. I put a link to the screenshot If I don't use the table style grouped the problem does not occur

  • Very simple test view in MonoTouch draws a line using Core Graphics but view content is not shown

    - by Krumelur
    Hi, I give up now on this very simple test I've been trying to run. I want to add a subview to my window which does nothing but draw a line from one corner of the iPhone's screen to the other and then, using touchesMoved() it is supposed to draw a line from the last to the current point. The issues: 1. Already the initial line is not visible. 2. When using Interface Builder, the initial line is visible, but drawRect() is never called, even if I call SetNeedsDisplay(). It can't be that hard...can somebody fix the code below to make it work? In main.cs in FinishedLaunching(): oView = new TestView(); oView.AutoresizingMask = UIViewAutoresizing.FlexibleWidth | UIViewAutoresizing.FlexibleHeight; oView.Frame = new System.Drawing.RectangleF(0, 0, 320, 480); window.AddSubview(oView); window.MakeKeyAndVisible (); The TestView.cs: using System; using MonoTouch.UIKit; using MonoTouch.CoreGraphics; using System.Drawing; using MonoTouch.CoreAnimation; using MonoTouch.Foundation; namespace Test { public class TestView : UIView { public TestView () : base() { } public override void DrawRect (RectangleF area, UIViewPrintFormatter formatter) { CGContext oContext = UIGraphics.GetCurrentContext(); oContext.SetStrokeColor(UIColor.Red.CGColor.Components); oContext.SetLineWidth(3.0f); this.oLastPoint.Y = UIScreen.MainScreen.ApplicationFrame.Size.Height - this.oLastPoint.Y; this.oCurrentPoint.Y = UIScreen.MainScreen.ApplicationFrame.Size.Height - this.oCurrentPoint.Y; oContext.StrokeLineSegments(new PointF[] {this.oLastPoint, this.oCurrentPoint }); oContext.Flush(); oContext.RestoreState(); Console.Out.WriteLine("Current X: {0}, Y: {1}", oCurrentPoint.X.ToString(), oCurrentPoint.Y.ToString()); Console.Out.WriteLine("Last X: {0}, Y: {1}", oLastPoint.X.ToString(), oLastPoint.Y.ToString()); } private PointF oCurrentPoint = new PointF(0, 0); private PointF oLastPoint = new PointF(320, 480); public override void TouchesMoved (MonoTouch.Foundation.NSSet touches, UIEvent evt) { base.TouchesMoved (touches, evt); UITouch oTouch = (UITouch)touches.AnyObject; this.oCurrentPoint = oTouch.LocationInView(this); this.oLastPoint = oTouch.PreviousLocationInView(this); this.SetNeedsDisplay(); } } }

  • How to "flick" a UIImageView?

    - by Meltemi
    I've got some UIViews that I'd like the user to be able to "flick" across the screen. They're not scroll views. They simply contain a raster image (png). Can anyone point me to some sample code, etc to help get me started? Something a little more heavyweight than "MoveMe" out there that helps detect a "flick" (vs a "nudge" or a drag and drop) and then carries the view off in the direction of the "flick"? OpenGL probably overkill. If possible I'd like to stay w/in the realm of Core Graphics/Animation.

  • Convert Virtual Key Code to unicode string

    - by Joshua Weinberg
    I have some code I've been using to get the current keyboard layout and convert a virtual key code into a string. This works great in most situations, but I'm having trouble with some specific cases. The one that brought this to light is the accent key next to the backspace key on german QWERTZ keyboards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:KB_Germany.svg That key generates the VK code I'd expect kVK_ANSI_Equal but when using a QWERTZ keyboard layout I get no description back. Its ending up as a dead key because its supposed to be composed with another key. Is there any way to catch these cases and do the proper conversion? My current code is below. TISInputSourceRef currentKeyboard = TISCopyCurrentKeyboardInputSource(); CFDataRef uchr = (CFDataRef)TISGetInputSourceProperty(currentKeyboard, kTISPropertyUnicodeKeyLayoutData); const UCKeyboardLayout *keyboardLayout = (const UCKeyboardLayout*)CFDataGetBytePtr(uchr); if(keyboardLayout) { UInt32 deadKeyState = 0; UniCharCount maxStringLength = 255; UniCharCount actualStringLength = 0; UniChar unicodeString[maxStringLength]; OSStatus status = UCKeyTranslate(keyboardLayout, keyCode, kUCKeyActionDown, 0, LMGetKbdType(), kUCKeyTranslateNoDeadKeysBit, &deadKeyState, maxStringLength, &actualStringLength, unicodeString); if(actualStringLength > 0 && status == noErr) return [[NSString stringWithCharacters:unicodeString length:(NSInteger)actualStringLength] uppercaseString]; }
