• Image caching when rendering the same images on different pages

  I'm told to think about caching of images that will be displayed on the page. The images will be repeated throughout the website on different pages and I'm told to figure out the best way to cache these images. There could be few to dozen of images on single page. Here's few questions: Will browser caching work to display the same images across different web pages? Should I rather store images in stringified form in a memory instead, using JavaScript arrays? Store them on hard drive using 'localStorage'? What would be easiest yet best option for this? Are there any other alternatives? How to force cache? Any other information would be greatly appreciated...

• Is doing AB Tests using site redirection a bad practice?

  I'm developing hotels websites here in Brazil. When the site is done, we do an AB test with the old version to measure conversion and show to the hotel owner how good our site is. Due to the fact that I cannot put the old site inside the new one as a subresource (newone.com/old), currently I'm doing those AB test as follows: 1) I create 2 Google Analytics accounts, one for each site (old and new); 2) I put the GA tags in the old website pages (changing its possibly existent GA ID to the just created one); 3) I put an Javascript code that redirects the user to the old website (in a different URL and different domain) with 50% of probability. So I compare all the metrics, events and goals between those two GA accounts. How bad is it? How Google can interpretate the fact of being, sometimes redirected, sometimes don't? The experiment usually runs for 2 weeks. Is there any other alternative for doing this in a better way?

• Sprite animation problem

  I have this sprite I have to animate. The sprite is 7 images total but animation is 10 frames (2 positions are repeated). The order I want to go through the frames is like this: 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 0 - 2. My problem is how can I skip 1 frame once I reach the end of each direction? The reason I want to skip is to save me from creating duplicate positions in the spritesheet. I'm doing this in Javascript.

• Space in img:s "ALT" attribute good/bad for search engines?

  I am trying to make it easier for search engines to crawl my website, as it is almost 100% dynamic. I have a couple of transparent images which are actually links to sections of my page. I wonder, if I add an "alt" attribute containing space characters to explain the target, will this improve SE rankings etc? For example: <img src="blabla.png" alt="post new classified"> Or will this just result in errors? Ànd, what should I put in the alt attribute if I can't use space? PS: Another different and short question, will javascript-rich content make a page less important to crawlers? Thanks

  Im not sure if i use the right terms, but im not able to find something to start with. Im trying to develop a little HTML5 game. I have a ground with a texture and now I want to make a surrounding texture. The texture is an image wich should be bend around the ground. At the moment im using easelJS for display my images/textures. So im looking for some sort of Tutorial/Script/Advice. Im not even sure if I can bend a image in javascript. So the worst case I can think of is split the image in 100 pieces and then put it back together and rotate each piece. for example like this:

• 3d js map rendering

  In the past I've done a 2D tile map using HTML, CSS and Javascript. Now I have the task of creating a 3D version using the same technologies - think of it like a space map where all planets have x/y/z positions. Currently, I have no idea to do this. Is there an existing library or something I can modify to do my job? If not, what method of rendering the map should I use? It needs to be as browser independent as possible, so I can't use webgl, flash or canvas. I'm considering plain JS & HTML or SVG (using Raphael for compatibility).

  My brother just started learning some html/css at school and he loves it. He asked me to give my advice on what languages to learn in order to build great web-apps by the time he leaves school. (2015 or something like that.) • Using Minified Page Specific JS [migrated]

  I've been working on a rather large scale project which makes use of a number of different pages with some very specific Javascript for each of them. To lessen load times, I plan to minify it all in to one file before deploying. The problem is this: how should I avoid launching page specific JS on pages which don't require it? So far my best solution has been to wrap each page in some additional container <div id='some_page'> ...everything else... </div> and I extended jQuery so I can do something like this: // If this element exists when the DOM is ready, execute the function $('#some_page').ready(function() { ... }); Which, while kind of cool, just rubs me the wrong way.

• Should a complete newbie use mongoose js? [on hold]

  I drank from the koolaid and jumped aboard the node.js bandwagon even though I barely know javascript. That said, I have the opportunity to work with one of 2 templates. One is just node, express and mongodb, and the second includes mongoose and jade with the other 3 and is easier for me to understand. Yet I'm concerned that if I begin with mongoose, I'll be too high level and miss some of the fundamentals. Is my concern warranted? Should I work my way up or should I just start playing with all the toys from day one?

  I am developing a web app and I have currently written the entire website in html/js/css and on the backend I have servlets that host some RESTFUL services. All the presentation logic is done through getting json objects and modifying the view through javascript. The application is essentially a search engine, but it will have user accounts with different roles. I've been researching some frameworks such as Play and Spring. I'm fairly new to web development, so I was wondering what advantages using server side page rendering would provide? Is it: Speed? Easier development and workflow? Access to existing libraries? More? All of the above?

• How do developers find the time to stay on top of latest technologies?

  I was a freelance web developer until circa 2004 when I started going down the management route but have decided to try to get back into development again (specifically JavaScript and HTML5 web/mobile web apps) and I really get the impression to be truly good at these and similar fast moving technologies a constant amount of time is required to be set aside to invest in getting better at existing skills in addition to learning new skills. I understand right now since I am getting back into things there is a pretty steep learning curve, but seeing how good many guys are out there - the only way I see of getting up there is putting in a serious amount of time. For those working as fulltime developers, what I am trying to understand is this - on most days, how much time in the office is spent actually grinding out code compared to learning/research. I could easily spend 2-4 hours daily getting on top of the best ways to go about doing things. Do most good developers who are employed full time invest significant hours outside of work sharpening their skills? Or maybe I'm looking at all of this completely wrong?

  I have a simple javascript game and I'm initializing their positions on the y axis using random numbers. How can I ensure that they are reasonably spaced apart? My simple algorithm is: y = (Math.random()*1000%600); However I frequently get enemies almost directly on top of each other. This is a huge problem for the game, since it's a word game and the enemies have text on their center, that if overlapped makes them impossible to kill since you can't see the words. Any advice would be appreciated! I'm pretty new to making games in general so this has all been a learning experience for me!

However, I don't fully understand them.   I have my website, we'll say it's "www.mysite.com" and I want to redirect it to my mobile site, which I am going to set up at "www.mobile.mysite.com." Both sites are with the same account at 1and1.com. I don't know what I am doing wrong. It says I have too many redirect loops. I put the javascript code in my head tag of my index.html home page that detects the screen size and I put in the URL of "www.mobile.mysite.com" and it gives me the redirect error.

• Got a malware on my hosting provider which infect JavaScript files .. how do I find the entry point?

• Google Fonts API JSON Data in WordPress Options-Framework-Theme

  I'm developing a child-theme off of the new Twenty Twelve theme using Wordpress 3.4.2 and the development version of the Options Theme Framework by Devin Price. In Devin's tutorial, it shows of a way to implement 15 Google Web Fonts into the Theme Options page, but not all of them (roughly 560). I know I can create a "manual list", like in the tutorial that states each one with fallbacks, but this is time consuming and unproductive as Google may or may not add to, update, change or remove some of these fonts from their list. The list I've created above will ultimately store unavailable fonts the user thinks is there because of what they can see in the drop-down menu and it won't have any new ones - making the list and some selections obsolete. On the Google Developer API Web Fonts page, it talks briefly on retrieving a "dynamic list" using JSON/JavaScript. I was wondering how would I be able to pull the Google Web Fonts API into my Wordpress Theme Options page so I'm not creating my own list or have to constantly release an update to solve this issue. Could someone please walk me through what I would need to paste into my options.php, functions.php, /inc/options-framework.php file etc. or even in a new one to implement this? I've also had a look into some screencasts, plugins and tutorials on how it works, but none of them are specific enough for people just starting out. Please keep in mind I'm not the best coder... If I edit this array like array(1,2,3), it means the output need to show like 1 2 3 The concept is maximum 3 column only. If we give array(1,2,3,4,5), it means the output should be 1 3 5 2 4 Suppose we will give array(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9), then it means output is 1 4 7 2 5 8 3 6 9 that is, maximum 3 column only. Depends upon the the given input, the rows will be created with 3 columns. Is this possible with PHP? I am doing small Research & Development in array functions. I think this is possible. • Best Method of function parameter validation

  I've been dabbling with the idea of creating my own CMS for the experience and because it would be fun to run my website off my own code base. One of the decisions I keep coming back to is how best to validate incoming parameters for functions. This is mostly in reference to simple data types since object validation would be quite a bit more complex. At first I debated creating a naming convention that would contain information about what the parameters should be, (int, string, bool, etc) then I also figured I could create options to validate against. But then in every function I still need to run some sort of parameter validation that parses the parameter name to determine what the value can be then validate against it, granted this would be handled by passing the list of parameters to function but that still needs to happen and one of my goals is to remove the parameter validation from the function itself so that you can only have the actual function code that accomplishes the intended task without the additional code for validation. Is there any good way of handling this, or is it so low level that typically parameter validation is just done at the start of the function call anyway, so I should stick with doing that.

• How to refactor to cleaner version of maintaing states of the widget

  Backstory I inherited a bunch of code that I'd like to refactor. It is a UI application written in javascript. Current state: We have main application which consist of several UI components. And each component has entry fields, textboxes, menus, etc), like "ticket", "customer information", etc. Based on input, where the application was called from, who is the user, we enable/disable, hide, show, change titles. Unfortunately, the app grew to the point where it is really hard to scale, add new features. Main the driver (application code) calls set/unset functions of the respective components. So a lot of the stuff look like this Main app unit function1() { **call_function2()** component1.setX(true); component1.setY(true); component2.setX(false); } call_function2() { // it may repeat some of the code function1 called } and we have a lot of this in the main union. I am cleaning this mess. What is the best way to maintain the state of widgets? Please let me know if you need me to clarify.
