  Hi guys, I've created a new Silverlight 3 Business Application with VS 2008. The creation has completed correctly. • Which are the RDBMS that minimize the server roundtrips? Which RDBMS are better (in this area) than

  When the latency is high ("when pinging the server takes time") the server roundtrips make the difference. Now I don't want to focus on the roundtrips created in programming, but the roundtrips that occur "under the hood" in the DB engine, so the roundtrips that are 100% dependant on how the RDBMS is written itself. I have been told that FireBird has more roundtrips than MySQL. But this is the only information I know. I am currently supporting MS SQL but I'd like to change RDBMS (because I use Express Editions and in my scenario they are quite limiting from the performance point of view), so to make a wise choice I would like to include also this point into "my RDBMS comparison feature matrix" to understand which is the best RDBMS to choose as an alternative to MS SQL. So the bold sentence above would make me prefer MySQL to Firebird (for the roundtrips concept, not in general), but can anyone add informations? And MS SQL where is it located? Is someone able to "rank" the roundtrip performance of the main RDBMS, or at least: MS SQL, MySql, Postegresql, Firebird (I am not interested in Oracle since it is not free, and if I have to change I would change to a free RDBMS). Anyway MySql (as mentioned several times on stackoverflow) has a not clear future and a not 100% free license. So my final choice will probably dall on PostgreSQL or Firebird. Additional info: somehow you can answer my question by making a simple list like: MSSQL:3; MySQL:1; Firebird:2; Postgresql:2 (where 1 is good, 2 average, 3 bad). Of course if you can post some links where the roundtrips per RDBMSs are compared it would be great

• Creating one row of information in excel using a unique value

  This is my first post. I am currently working on a project at work which requires that I work with several different worksheets in order to create one mail master worksheet, as it were, in order to do a mail merge. The worksheet contains information regarding different purchases, and each purchaser is identified with their own ID number. Below is an example of what my spreadsheet looks like now (however I do have more columns): ID Salutation Address ID Name Donation ID Name Tickets 9 Mr. John Doe 123 12 Ms. Jane Smith 100.00 12 Ms.Jane Smith 300.00 12 Ms. Jane Smith 456 22 Mr. Mike Man 500.00 84 Ms. Jo Smith 300.00 What I would like to do is somehow sort my data so that everythign with the same unique identifier (ID) lines up on the same row. For example ID 12 Jane Smith - all the information for her will show up under her name matched by her ID number, and ID 22 will match up with 22 etc... When I merged all of my spreadsheets together, I sorted them all by ID number, however my problem is, not everyone who made a donation bought a ticket or some people just bought tickets and nothing us, so sorting doesn't work.   I'm trying to determine CPU usage of my PHP scripts. I just found this article which details how to find system and user CPU usage time (Section 4). However, when I tried out the examples, I received completely different results. The first example: sleep(3); $data = getrusage(); echo "User time: ". ($data['ru_utime.tv_sec'] + $data['ru_utime.tv_usec'] / 1000000); echo "System time: ". ($data['ru_stime.tv_sec'] + $data['ru_stime.tv_usec'] / 1000000); Results in: User time: 29.53 System time: 2.71 Example 2: for($i=0;$i<10000000;$i++) { } // Same echo statements Results: User time: 16.69 System time: 2.1 Example 3: $start = microtime(true); while(microtime(true) - $start < 3) { } // Same echo statements Results: User time: 34.94 System time: 3.14 Obviously, none of the information is correct except maybe the system time in the third example. So what am I doing wrong? I'd really like to be able to use this information, but it needs to be reliable. • Handling Corrupted JPEGs in C#

  We have a process that pulls images from a remote server. Most of the time, we're good to go, the images are valid, we don't timeout, etc. However, every once and awhile we see this error similar to this: Unhandled Exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException: A generic error occurred in GDI+. at System.Drawing.Image.Save(Stream stream, ImageCodecInfo encoder, EncoderPa rameters encoderParams) at ConsoleApplication1.Program.Main(String[] args) in C:\images\ConsoleApplic ation1\ConsoleApplication1\Program.cs:line 24 After not being able to reproduce it locally, we looked closer at the image, and realized that there were artifacts, making us suspect corruption. Created an ugly little unit test with only the image in question, and was unable to reproduce the error on Windows 7 as was expected. But after running our unit test on Windows Server 2008, we see this error every time. Is there a way to specify non-strictness for jpegs when writing them? Some sort of check/fix we can use? • Enterprise integration of disparate systems

  We're about to embark on a fairly large integration effort to kill off a bunch of Access and Sql Server databases and get everything into one coherent enterprise system. There are also a number of other systems (accounting, CRM, payroll, MS Exchange) that hold critical data that we need to integrate (use for data validation in other systems), report on and otherwise expose. It is likely that some of these systems will change in the next few years, so we need to isolate our systems to be ready for change. Ideally we would be able to expose our forms in a consistent manner across as many of our our systems as possible without having to re-develop them for each system. We are currently targeting SharePoint (2007 and soon 2010), Office (2007 and soon 2010 - Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), Reporting Services, .Net console applications, .Net Windows applications, shell extensions, and with the possibility of exposing some functionality on mobile devices (BlackBerries currently, maybe iPhones later) and via our website. We're moving development to Visual Studio 2010 (from 2005) ahead of migrating to SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010. Given that most of our development is presently targeted to the .Net framework (mostly in C#) it seems logical to stick with this unless there is some compelling reason to switch frameworks/platform for some aspects. We're thinking of your standard Database-Data Integration layer-Business Objects Layer-Web Services (or REST) layer-Client Application plus doing our own client application with WPF (or something else?) forms that can also be exposed in the MS systems (SharePoint, Office, Windows). So, we don't want much, just everything :) Basically we need to isolate ourselves from database and systems changes, create an API that can be used throughout our systems and then make this functionality available in our client applications. I'm very keen to get pointers from anyone who has tips on how to pull this off. Should we look at the Enterprise Library as a place to start? Is REST with ASP.Net MVC2 a better solution than Web Services for a system like this? Will WPF deliver forms re-use or is there something better?

• PDO closeCursor Error

  Hey Everyone, I currently have a database layer that I wrote myself and I have been using it now for over a year without any problems. The database class uses PDO, and there are two different databases that I regularly connect to (MySQL and MS SQL). The MS SQL database is used for Accpac accounting storage, and the MySQL database is used for everything else. In one of the MySQL databases I have all of the dsn's listed which I use to create the string I need to connect to the MS SQL databases. I have a new program I am trying to write which I am taking employee data from one of the MySQL databases, and using the employee ID to get the employee's information from the MS SQL database. For some reason, whenever I run the program it will get through about 1200 records (out of 11k) and then crash with an error like the following, Fatal error: Call to a member function closeCursor() on a non-object I have tried moving the loops around in many different ways, and I have tried manually closing the connections by setting the database handle to null. Nothing I do seems to work. Thanks for any help! Metropolis

• What's a good way to do testing a plug-in on multiple Windows and Outlook versions?

  Hello, We're building a plug-in for Outlook that should work on multiple Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7) and also with different Outlook versions (2003, 2007, 2010). The testing problem I am facing right now, is that I can't figure out a good/convenient/thorough way to test the application on multiple Windows and Outlook versions. At the moment, I have a VirtualBox which runs many virtual machines, with different Windows versions and Outlook versions. So I would have a virtual machine with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2010, and another one with Windows 7 testing Outlook 2007, Windows Vista with Outlook 2010 and so on, going through some of the possible combinations. It kind of gets the job done, although it is cumbersome and takes a long time to test. Some of the testing included in the application is unit testing, but this is also rather tied in with the machine I test it on (windows 7 with outlook 2010). For example, I was using ManagementObject recently, which worked fine on my system (and thus passed the unit test for that method), however, using that object threw an exception in another person's system, which crashed the application. I work on Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate. The questions: Is there a more elegant way to make the testing process more streamline and more efficient? Any other testing methods you recommend? • Web pages that a long time to load keep on reloading, just on vista on my work n/w...

  I have a curious problem at work which I've been struggling with since the advent of Windows Vista. We send our own email newsletter out to 40,000+ people once a week. The sending code has been in place for years, it's in classic ASP/VBscript called through a browser and simply loops through each email address, sending it to them. The page takes 40 mins or more to run, so has a big timeout value to allow it to do so. All well and good, suddenly, after Windows Vista is installed on the work PCs, the email sending page behaved oddly - after a period of time it seems to reload the page, endlessly, so the first 20% of our users get multiple copies of the newsletter until we kill the process! If we run the code on an XP machine in the on the same office network, it works fine. If we run it on Vista outside the office, so, say, on my own ISP, then it also works fine! Note, same effect in IE and FF... So, something about my office network and Vista is causing this... I recently re-wrote the newsletter code so it would split the task into chunks of 100 users at a time, hoping this would fix it, but my most recent test shows that the office n/w vista machine once again reloads the same page over any over, even though it takes 1/10th of the time to run... Does anyone have any ideas what it might be, how I can prove it, or, better, how I can get round it? Thanks for your advice :)

• Ubuntu 12.04 + Wifi not working

  i'm having problems connecting over wireless. At the moment, I'm using wicd. It seems to get stuck on "Verifying AP association...". Without wicd I can get the connection up and ping the Net - but if I take eth0 down (ifconfig eth0 down), my wireless goes away too (same result if I unplug the wire instead). wicd is the only way I can bring eth0 back (which is the main reason I'm using it) - ifconfig eth0 and/or ifup eth0 do not re-enable the connection (I just discovered it leaves out the gateway. Adding the gateway back in re-enables the connection including wifi; I didn't want to delete the info about wicd above in case it gives someone an idea.)
