  • Find wait reason in Oracle

    I'm running a Java application with an Oracle 10g. I've discovered kind of a race condition that leads to an inifite long waiting time for an UPDATE statement. To solve this situation I'd like to find out what this statement is waiting for (locks on certain tables caused by statement xy etc.). I tried to use the Oracle Enterprise Manager which has found this situation as well but it doesn't tell my the reason for the wait.

  • Is there a way I can find if my hard disk data was stolen? [closed]

    How can I tell if the repair shop stole my hard drive? I had my computer in the shop for a couple of days to get a diagnostic check and he quoted me $130. I have a family member who said he would do it for $30 so I rejected the offer and requested it back. When he returned it I hooked it back up and now I get a low disk space warning; when I dropped it off I had at least 50 gb of space left, on a total of 149 gb and all my pictures movies, and music are gone. Can I find if he indeed did steal my hard drive or something?

    How do I go about performing a full, bare metal disaster recovery from BRU Server backups? I have backed up the entire C:\ (including Windows, Program Files etc) of a test machine (using Open File Manager) and want to restore this to a new server. What is the procedure I need to go through to restore to a clean server using my backup? How does this work with various services such as DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, SQL Server, Windows Registry etc? Thanks in advance.

  • Should I store my code/projects on my SSD or my secondary drive?

    I just got a new box. It has an SSD for the primary drive, and a 1TB SATA for the secondary drive. I'm going to run windows and my binaries on the SSD and keep all my downloads/documents/music/etc on the secondary drive. My question is should I also keep my Visual Studio Projects and code on the SSD or keep them on the secondary drive? The faster SSD would presumably be better for compiling and indexed searches, but would it be better to keep it on the 2nd drive for a more parallel disk IO situation?

  • Summer Programming Plans

    I've wanted to start "hacking" for many months now. But I put it off in favor of school and other things. Now, though, I'm free for the summer and want to learn as much as I can. I have a rough idea of what I want to try my hand at, but need some guidance as to what specifically - and how - I should learn. This is my plan so far: 1) Get good at programming in general. I plan to read up on how to think/work like a programmer. I'm waiting for the Pragmatic Programmer to arrive, which will be the first book I read. Q: What other books/ebooks should I look at? What more can I do here? 2) Learn/Improve at HTML/CSS. My first project will be to make a personal website/blog for myself using HTML and CSS. ----Then I hope to write/design articles like Dustin Curtis. After I finish this (and learn a programming language) I'll try to create user-based a user-focused website. Q: It's my understanding that just trying to design/manage websites is a good way to learn/improve at HTML/CSS. Is that all correct? 3) Try music development. This might be a sort of stretch for stackoverflow, but I'm interested in mixing/making techno songs. (Think Justice, or Daft Punk, or MSTRKRFT.) Q: I have a Mac. Any ideas on how I could start/learn music making? Any programs I should download, for instance? 4) My main goal: Learning a web development language/framework. I'm a year into learning/using C++. But what I really want to do is develop websites and web apps. I've searched online, and there seems to be great debate over which language/framework to learn first (and which is best). I think I've narrowed it down to three: Ruby (Rails), Python (Django), and PHP (?). Q #1: Which should I learn and use first? (Reasons?) Q #2: One reason I was leaning towards PHP is that I'm taking a PHP development course next semester. Learning it now would make that course easy. If PHP was not the answer to Q #1, is it worth learning both? Or, would it be better to just focus on PHP for this summer and next semester, and then transition thereafter to a better language? 5) iPhone/iPad Programming (Maybe). I've a number of simple, useful app ideas that I'd like to eventually get too. I just bought a Mac, as well as a few app development books. Q #1: Am I spreading myself thin trying to learn all of the above, and objective-C? Q #2: How much harder/easier is objective-C compared to the above languages? Also, how easy is it to learn obj-C after learning a web development language (and some C++)? Q #3: Yes or no? Should I go for it, or just keeep with #1-4 for now? Also: If you have any tips on how I should learn (or how you learned to hack), I'm all ears. I'd be especially interested in how you planned out learning: did you just hack whenever you felt like it, or did you "study" the language a few hours a day, or something else? Thanks so much, guys.

  • FMOD.net streaming, callback and exinfo parameters

    I posted a question on gamedev about how to play nsf files (NES console music) in FMOD. It didn't get any results, but since then I made some progress. I decided that the easiest method was just to compile an existing player into a dll and then call it from C# to populate my buffer. The problem now is getting it to sound right, and making sure all my paremeters are correct. Here are the facts so far: The nsf dll is dealing with shorts, so the data is PCM16. The sample nsf I'm using has a playback rate of 60 Hz. Just for playing around now, I'm using a frequency of 48000. Based on 2 and 3, the dll calculates a necessary buffer size of 48000 / 60hz = 800. This means it will render 800 shorts worth of buffer for every simulated NES frame. I've so far got my C# code to play the nsf, at the correct pitch and tempo, but it's very grainy / fuzzy, which I'm attributing to the fact that the FMOD read callback is giving a data length of 1600, whereas I should be expecting 800. I've tried playing around with all the numbers and it either crashes, or the music changes pitch, tempo, or both. With this code sample, it's coming in as 3200. I don't know where that factor of 4 between it and the decodebuffersize comes from. Is datalen in the callback referring to number of bytes, or shorts? The process_buffer function takes a short array and its length. I would expect fmod is talking about shorts as well because I told it PCM16. Maybe my playback quality is bad for some totally different reason. If so I have no idea where to begin solving that. Any ideas there?

The only problem is my menu isn't overlaying my map, it pushes the content up. I tried with the menu manager like in your first response, resizing the content manager but it is the same result. Max gave me the link http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1497073/blackberry-fields-layout-animation to do so, but I really don't know how to use it to make it work in my project... Thank you for your help! UPDATE This works great, it's what I wanted. However, I still have a problem because I'm under 4.5. So first in the MenuHostManager constructor, I deleted the USE_ALL_HEIGHT and change setPositionChild(mMenuManager, 0, Display.getHeight() - mMenuManager.getPreferredHeight()); like this to have the menu at the bottom of the screen. It worked. Then, instead of drawing my bitmaps, I did this: Bitmap nBitmap = EncodedImage.getEncodedImageResource("menu" + i + ".png").getBitmap(); BitmapButtonField button = new BitmapButtonField(nBitmap, nBitmap); And it worked too (no rollover for now, later). So it is great! I also overwrite the Paint method of my CyclicHFManager to have a background color, because I can't use the BorderFactory and BackgroundFactory... My menu bar has a color for now so it's ok. Then, because of these 2 classes missing, in my BitmapButtonField I had to delete the 2 setBorder functions that change the borders. And now i have my buttons pretty big like normal buttons with borders... How can I make the same effect as the setBorder functions under 4.5? (BTW, setBorder is not working under 4.5 too...).   • How to associate newly created SurfaceHolder to MediaPlayer

    In my code, I want to be able to temporarily hide (and subsequently show) a video. I am using a SurfaceView + MediaPlayer combination instead of the VideoView due to requirements. However, I am facing difficulties in getting video playback to occur as expected after I show the SurfaceView. And then I want to output a specially formatted list of song information into fout (which will be used as an input file later on). Printing to cout works great.   • Grabbing all <a> tags in a specific div and displaying them

    So I'v got a small problem with my portfolio site (you can see it at here) When you click on a portfolio piece, a top section opens up to reveal the details (Title, year, role, description) as well as the photos. I'v been able to get each project to replace all the text data, but I can't seem to get the images to load into the thumbnails. I have been able to get the last image i'm looking for in all of the images on the site, but not display each photo for each project.     I've written about various breeds of social shopping in the past, so I decided to give some thought into a categorization with examples. Below I've listed the different types of social shopping I've observed and some companies that support them. Comments and Ratings -- Commenting on products has been around almost as long as e-commerce. Two popular players in this space are BazaarVoice and PowerReviews. Most shoppers prefer relying on peer reviews rather than retailer descriptions, so the influence over sales is very strong. f-commerce -- A new term that was sure to rear its ugly head when retailers started allowing shopping on Facebook, And its all Elastic Path and Alvenda's fault! Co-shopping -- Retailers like Wet Seal are enabling multiple people to shop together online. This is particularly applicable to fashion, where the real-time exchange of opinions is important. I actually tried this with a co-worker and its pretty cool. Bragging -- Blippy is Twitter for shoppers, allowing purchases to be "tweeted" so you can keep up with your friends. I get alerted when friends download music or apps from iTunes because chances are I'll be interested as well. This covert influence is one-up'ed by Snatter, a service that gives people discounts for tweeting or posting promotions from retailers. This is the petri dish of viral marketing. Advice -- Combine the bragging of Blippy and the opinions from BazaarVoice and you'd get ShopSocially, a social network dedicated to spreading product knowledge amongst informed shoppers. I'm sure if I gave it more thought, a few more types would come to mind, but I've got to get back to work. Now is not the time to be blogging at Oracle!

    The Webby Awards were created back in 1996 when the internet was just a baby. This is their 14th year of highlighting excellence on the Web, and there are lots of great nominations. Its quite amazing to see the rich content and interactivity of today's websites. Some interesting nominees for this year are: Sephora did a campaign at Christmas, and what remains of the Sephora Clause website is a bunch of wishes. The Starbucks "All you need is Love" campaign has lots of cool videos. The Sound Check from Walmart highlights raising music artists. Refinery29 has their fashion info hub. The five nominees in the retail category are: Bugaboo.com's website for selling high-end baby strollers. If you're looking for a high-end bag, check out Crumpler's flash-based e-commerce site. It's highly interactive, but a little on the slow side. I Make My Case sells custom designed iPod/iPhone and Blackberry cases. At MOO.com, they love to print. Tons of art for printing customized business cards, post cards, etc. If you want light shoes, check out Puma L.I.F.T. and see just how light shoes can weigh. Check them out, cast a few votes, and see if you're inspired to create something even better.

    Are you frustrated that you can not minimize Windows Live Mail to the system tray in Windows 7? With just a few tweaks you can make Live Mail minimize to the system tray just like in earlier versions of Windows. Windows Live Mail in Windows Vista In Windows Vista you could minimize Windows Live Mail to the system tray if desired using the context menu… Windows Live Mail in Windows 7 In Windows 7 you can minimize the app window but not hide it in the system tray. The Hide window when minimized menu entry is missing from the context menu and all you have is the window icon taking up space in your taskbar. How to Add the Context Menu Entry Back Right click on the program shortcut(s) and select properties. When the properties window opens click on the compatibility tab and enable the Run this program in compatibility mode for setting. Choose Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down menu and click OK. Once you have restarted Windows Live Mail you will have access to the Hide window when minimized menu entry again. And just like that your taskbar is clear again when Windows Live Mail is minimized. If you have wanted the ability to minimize Windows Live Mail to the system tray in Windows 7 then this little tweak will fix the problem.   • The Disloyalty Card

    Let's take a break from technology for a second; please indulge me. (That's for you Erick.) A few months back, James Hoffmann reported that Gwilym Davies, the 2009 World Barista Champion, had implemented a rather unique idea for his cafe: the disloyalty card. His card lists eight nearby cafes in London that the cardholder must visit and try a coffee. After sampling all eight and collecting the required stamps, Gwilym provides a free coffee from his shop. His idea sends customers to his competitors. What does this say about Gwilym? First, it tells me he's confident in his abilities to make a mean cup of java. Second, it tells me he's truly passionate about his his trade. But was this a sound business endeavor? Obviously the risk is that one of his loyal customers might just find a better product at a competitor and not return. But the goal isn't really to strengthen his customer base -- its to strengthen the market, which will in turn provide more customers over the long run. This idea seems great for frequently purchased products like restaurants, bars, bakeries, music, and of course, cafes. Its probably not a good idea for high priced merchandise or infrequently purchased items like shoes, electronics, and housewares. Nevertheless, its a great example of thinking in reverse. Try this: Instead of telling your staff how you want customers treated, list out the ways you don't want customers treated. Why should you limit people's imagination and freedom to engage customers? Instead, give them guidelines to avoid the bad behavior, and leave them open to be creative with the positive behavior. Instead of asking the question, "how can we get more people in our stores?" try asking the inverse: "why aren't people visiting our stores?" Innovation doesn't only come from asking "why?" Often it comes from asking "why not?"

  • Display Song Lyrics in Windows Media Player with Lyrics Plugin

    Looking for a way to display song lyrics in Windows Media Player? Today we look at a very simple method to accomplish this with Lyrics Plugin for Windows Media Player. Download and run the Lyrics Plugin install. (See download link below) When the installation is finished you’ll be prompted to run Windows Media Player. Click Yes. Begin playing your song or playlist then switch to Now Playing mode.   You should now see the full song lyrics of the currently playing track. To toggle the lyrics on and off, select Tools from the Menu in Library view, choose Plug-ins, and click Lyrics Plugin. If you don’t see the Menu bar, you can enable it by going to Organize, Layout, and Show Menu Bar. When Lyrics Plugin is turned off, Windows Media Player will switch back to it’s default visualization.   Whether you just want to know the lyrics or you’d like to hone your karaoke chops, Lyrics Plugin makes a nice addition to Windows Media Player 12.
