• Workshop in Denver canceled - thanks to hurricane Isaac

  Yesterday Roy did start his journey on time to travel to Denver, CO for today's Upgrade and Migration Workshop.  But unfortunately due to the remnants of  hurricane Issac moving up the East Coast and scrambling up flight schedules Roy's flight from NYC to Denver got canceled after a 3 hour delay leaving Manchester, NH, and there was no option to arrive in Denver this morning on time. So we apologize for canceling that workshop. The local marketing department will contact you regarding an alternative date. Sorry for any inconvenience!

• Support / Maintenance documentation for development team

  Hi, I'm working in the Development dept (around 40 developers) for a large E-Commerce company. We've grown quickly but have not evolved very well in the field of documenting our work. We work with an Agile / Scrum-like methodology with our development and testing but documentation seems to be neglected. We need to be able to make documentation that would aid a developer who hasnt worked on our project before or was new to the company. We also have to create more high level information for our support department to explain any extra config settings and fixes of known issues that may arise, if any. Currently we put this in a badly put together wiki, based on an old Sharepoint / TFS site. Can anyone suggest some ideal links or advice on improving the documentation standard? What works in other companies? Has anyone got avice on developing documentation as part of an agile process? Many thanks, ben

• Grub bootloader goes fail to boot in dual boot system after installing Ubuntu 12.10

  I had 12.04 with my dual boot system. Yesterday I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 make bootable USB and choose Upgrade option in Installer. After installation Grub failed to boot my machine. I tried following to fix grub bootloder . Same problem I fixed with Ubuntu 12.04 using live USB but this solution not work for Ubuntu 12.10. Now coming at exactly where this solution goes fail. I followed this steps after booting Live USB and opening terminal. 1) sudo fdisk -l to see where Linux is installed 2) sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt where sda9 is my linux partition 3) sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt/boot 4) sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev 5) sudo chroot /mnt (No problems with this steps done perfectly) 6) grub-install /dev/sda when I type command I got error that source_dir doesn't exist Please specify --target or --directory How can I solve this ?

• Installing netcdf c++ interface on ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

  I am using a code which employs the modern netcdf c++ interface (netcdf namespace, include file is called just netcdf without .h or similar, ncFile class, etc) and have just switched to ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. I installed netcdf and libnetcdf6 with apt-get, but I still get the "old" headers in /usr/local/include (netcdf.h, netcdfcpp.h, etc). In Ubuntu, the library version for netcdf is 4.1.1, while at my own computer with Mac Os X (where I have the right netcdf include file) the version is 4.2.1.1 . I cannot modify the source code I am using. I would like to know if there is a way to upgrade the netcdf library on ubuntu to support the modern c++ ointerface, or, if I have to manually compile it, if you think that using src2pkg is a good idea. This is my first experience with Ubuntu. Thanks in advance.

• 2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

  So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post.  What kind of title should I put?  Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message.  I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne.  It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat.  I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up waking up around 11:15 to that text message buzz.  I guess my DE, Rachel Appel, had texted me “Happy New Years”, because Rachel is that kind of person.  I immediately proceeded to check my email.  I noticed my live account had a hit.  The account I rarely ever use had an email.  I sort of had that sinking suspicion I was going to get Silverlight MVP right?  So I open the email and something out of the blue happens it says “blah blah blah SharePoint Server MVP blah blah…”.  I’m sitting here a little confused what?  Really?  Just about when you give up on something the unexplained happens.  I am grateful for what I have every day. So let me tell you a story.  I was a senior in high school and it was December 31st, 1999.  A couple days prior my grandmother was complaining she had a cold and her assisted living facility was not going to let her see a doctor.  She claimed to be very sick.  New Year’s Eve Day 1999 my grandmother was rushed to the hospital sometime very early in the morning.  My uncle, my little brother, and myself were sitting in the waiting room eagerly awaiting news.  The Sydney Opera House was playing in the background as New Years 2000 for Australia was ringing in.  They come out and they tell us my grandmother has pneumonia.  She is in the ICU in critical condition.  Eventually time passes in the day and my parents take my brother and I home.  So in the car we had a huge fight that ended in the worst new years of my life.  The next 30 days were the worst 30 days of my life.  I went to the hospital every single day to do my homework and watch my grandmother.  Each day was a challenge mentally and physically as my grandmother berated me in her demented state.  On the 30th day my grandmother ended up in critical condition in the ICU maxed out on painkillers.  At approximately 3 am I hear my parents telling me they don’t want to wake me up and that my grandmother had passed away.  I must have cried more collectively that day than any other day in my life.  Every New Years Even since I have cried thinking about who she was and what she represented.  She was human looking back she wasn’t anything great, but she was one of the positive lights in my life.  Her and my dad and my other grandmother constantly tried to make me feel great when my mother was telling me the opposite.  I’d like to think since 2000 the past 11 years have been the best 11 years of my life.  I got out of a bad situation by using the tools that I had in front of me.  Good grades and getting into a college so I could aspire to be the person that I wanted to be.  I had some great people along the way to help me out. So getting to the point I like to help people further there lives somehow in the best way I can possibly help out.  This New Years was one of the great years that helped me forget the past and focus on the present.  It makes me realize how far I’ve come since high school and even since college.  The one thing I’ve been grappling with over the years is how do you feel good about making money while helping others out.  I’d to think I try really hard to give back to my community.  I could not have done what I did without other people’s help.  I sent out an email prior to even announcing I got the award today.  I can’t say I did everything on my own.  It’s not possible.  I had the help of others every step of the way.  I’m not sure if this makes sense but the award can’t just be mine.  This award is really owned by each and everyone who helped me get here.  From my dad to my grandmother to Rachel Appel to Bob Hunt to Jason Gallicchio to Cathy Dew to Mark Rackley to Johnny Ennion to Lee Brandt to Jeff Julian to John Alexander to Lori Gowin and to many others.  Thank you guys for all the help and support. • PIN request at each login after update to Maverick

  I have a netbook with included 3G mobile broadband card (Huawei E620). I have configured the broadband network connection in the Network Manager and it works perfectly. However since Maverick upgrade, a window appears just after login I asking for the SIMcard PIN. This happens every time I log in and did not happen with Lucid. Note that the PIN is stored in the configuration of the mobile broadband connection and Lucid was satisfied with that. Is there a way to prevent this request or, at least, to have the system rember the PIN and stop ansking for it? If it may be useful, the broadband network connection is configured as not being available for other users. Also, I would like to keep the SIMcard asking for the PIN; only I do not want to insert it manually at login.

  ** my problem is as following: unable to add/remove any program using either update-manager or Synaptic Package Manager or terminal update-manager is asking for partial upgrade and while updating software-center 5.6.2 catalog , there is no progress beyond the line "this is may take a moment" synaptic is unable to obtain an exclusive lock, similarly can't do terminal command sudo apt-get update if i try to break down the lock using the command sudo fuser -cuk /var/lib/dpkg/lock; sudo rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/lock it turns off my monitor display and i have to restart the whole system. note: this whole trouble started ,when i found ubuntu software-center missing after adding a repository and reinstalled it. **

VS2010 SP1 Beta ships with a go live license which means you can start using it for production work though I’m not sure I’m going to be that brave until I check it out a bit first. • Moodle Inconsistencies, Flowplayer, or Server?

  We are trying to decide if an issue we're having with Moodle and our videos is a flowplayer issue, a video issue, or a network issue. Any input is welcome. We've had videos in our Moodle (version 1.9, we're working on an upgrade on a different server) up for weeks, or even months. After that time, some of them have suddenly just stopped working. When they don't work, they just don't load. The videos work when we first upload them. With flowplayer, we don't get errors, just a blank screen. We have re-uploaded our videos several times when this has happened, but we really would like to know what's causing it so that we can prevent it. There are also no keyframe issues with the video. We are currently trying to find answers through various searches, but have not had any luck. I will continue to post more info as I come across it...but if there's anyone who knows or has ideas, it's welcome.

  I install ubuntu 12.04 in my notebook and I use c++. I want to use c++11,so I want to upgrade my gcc to gcc4.7. I do like this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 sudo apt-get install g++-4.7 but when I run "sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7", it just can find gcc-4.7-base not gcc-4.7, and when I run "sudo apt-get install g++-4.7", it can find nothing... Today, I want to install the "bumblebee" and do like this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia sudo reboot but when I run "sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia", it tells me the packages can't be find. • netbook alternate installation/update

  I have an Asipre One D255E netbook. Installed 9.10 sucessfully, but no internet connections to upgrade to 10.04 or 10.10. Have 10.10 alternate (couldnt get 10.04). However it says that no cd-rom present (netbook via live usb), and I directed it to sdb1 but that did not work. Could someone guide me to the steps to installation via alternate ubs only (& no internet)? The live usb's of 10.04 & 10.10 internet connections worked, but installation hanged (non alternate). • can't use flash in ubuntu 13.10

  Since I upgraded to ubuntu 13.10, my flash isn't working anymore in firefox or opera. It only works in Google Chrome as it is included in the browser. I did check that I have flash plugin for firefox and so on installed. Everthing did work before the upgrade. When I try to install from adobe's website, it doens't pick up anymore the apt installer/ software center. You have to physically to go and look for the correct program to install flash, but I don't know where to look for it or choose it. Is there a other way like in terminal or somewhere else to reinstall it? Or what can I do?

  I have a sales call today in which the person that I am talking to is interested in what TFS would give them over Star Team, The first thing I believe that I can say is that TFS is cheaper! Especially if you are doing MSFT development already and your team members have MSDN subscriptions as the CALs for TFS are covered in the MSDN subscription. The other thing that I noticed about Star Team was all of the references to ‘readiness’ and ‘integration’. While that is great, that means that other tools will be needed to provide the features that are already bundled with TFS like, SharePoint integration, as well as Analysis Services and Reporting Services to provide visibility on the web with reports on project health, and team velocity. • Ubuntu 11.10 and Atheros AR8131 ethernet card

  I have an Atheros AR8131 Ethernet card on a Lenovo b560 laptop. Sometime in the past, probably at some upgrade or other my wired connection stopped functioning. I know the card is ok because it works with windows. I tried upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 hoping the problem would go away. It didn't... Tried to google the problem, but all of the solutions I found didn't work for me. This is probably a driver problem. Any help will be appreciated. Please note that I'm a linux newbie so I don't really know what logs to post... Niv

• JDeveloper and Upgrading Your JDK on Ubuntu

  One little gotcha, if you, as I did recently, upgrade your JDK on Ubuntu then you may have to make sure you reflect that change in a couple of places for JDeveloper to stay happy. Assuming that you've installed from the jar version of the JDeveloper installer, then the JDK that you specified at install time will be recorded in the .jdev_jdk file in your home directory.However, be aware that this is not the only reference to the absolute path of the JDK. When you run the embedded WebLogic for the first time then the .jdeveloper/system11.1.1.3.37.56.60/DefaultDomain/bin/startWebLogic.shscript will be created, and associated with that, the setDomainEnv.sh script in the same directory. So, if you do want to change the JDK location be sure to change this file as well. (or of course do everything with symbolic links)

• (Xubuntu) no touchpad or mouse on Aspire One D270

  I installed Xubuntu 12.10 on an Aspire One D270 using a Live USB. Initially, the live USB wouldn't boot, but by running sudo apt-get dist-upgrade on it (on a different machine), I upgraded the kernel and it now works perfectly. However, after installing Xubuntu from the stick onto the D270, neither the touchpad nor an external mouse works. If I use the keyboard to navigate to the mouse settings, the 'device' setting is greyed out. I don't see why the mouse should work perfectly when running from the live USB but not once installed to the machine...? Thanks for any help.

  I am currently dual booting Win7 and Ubuntu. I created a new partition, on my c drive, to install windows 8 on (i did not want to do the upgrade). I inserted the windows 8 cd and restarted my computer. no such partition/ grub rescue is all that comes up now. I loaded ubuntu from disk and did boot-repair. It did not solve my problem but I got the following output Please let me know if anyone can fix this. I am lost.

• How to troubleshoot Ubuntu One in Maverick beta?

  I just updated to the Maverick beta (actually it's a fresh install, and not an upgrade of 10.04). But now "Ubuntu One" doesn't show up in my me-menu thing. In addition, when I go to Ubuntu One from System-Preferences and attempt to log in from there it will sometimes look like it works, but other times it won't do anything. When I go to the command line and type u1sdtool -s it will either say something like "doing auth dance" or "auth failed" and often it has never even prompted me to log in or try to get a new password (even though I know it's correct). Anyway, this is the main hangup I have with the Maverick beta. I can't get to my ubuntu one account from the native client. Is this a widespread issue? Is there something I can do to fix this?
