    Given a string s, what is the fastest method to generate a set of all its unique substrings? Example: for str = "aba" we would get substrs={"a", "b", "ab", "ba", "aba"}. The naive algorithm would be to traverse the entire string generating substrings in length 1..n in each iteration, yielding an O(n^2) upper bound. Is a better bound possible? (this is technically homework, so pointers-only are welcome as well)

    Right now we are using Fastpath ODBC DSN connection method to access our "ARUNA" db. Our development platform is .NET C#. But we are in need of connecting the DB without using DSN.   • unformatted input to a std::string instead of c-string from binary file.

    ok i have this program working using c-strings. I am wondering if it is possible to read in blocks of unformatted text to a std::string? I toyed arround with if >> but this reads in line by line. I've been breaking my code and banging my head against the wall trying to use std::string, so I thought it was time to enlist the experts. Here's a working program you need to supply a file "a.txt" with some content to make it run. i tried to fool around with: in.read (const_cast<char *>(memblock.c_str()), read_size); but it was acting odd. I had to do std::cout << memblock.c_str() to get it to print. and memblock.clear() did not clear out the string. anyway, if you can think of a way to use STL I would greatly appreciate it.     We can replace strings in a batch file using the following command set str="jump over the chair" set str=%str:chair=table% These lines work fine and change the string "jump over the chair" to "jump over the table". Now I want to replace the word "chair" in the string with some variable and I don't know how to do it. set word=table set str="jump over the chair" ?? Any ideas?

I think it could be done with .NET regexps using "Lookaround" operators, particularly balancing operators. I'm not so sure about perl.

    Just wondering if there was a nice (already implemented/documented) algorithm to do the following Given any shape (without crossing edges) and two points inside that shape, compute all the paths between the two points such that all reflections are perfect reflections. The path lengths should be limited to a certain length otherwise there are infinite solutions. I'm not interested in just shooting out rays to try to guess how close I can get, I'm interested in algorithms that can do it perfectly. Search based, not guess/improvement based.

    Does anybody have a quickie for converting an unsafe string to an int? The string typically comes back as: '234\r\n' or something like that. In this case I want 234. If '-1\r\n', I want -1. I never want the method to fail but I don't want to go so far as try, except, pass just to hide errors either (in case something extreme happens).
