    I have a belief that markup should remain in mark-up and not in the code behind. I've come to a situation where I think it is acceptable to build the HTML in the code behind. I'd like to have some consensus as to what the best practices are or should be. When is it acceptable to build html in the code behind? What is the best method to create this html? (example: Strings, StringBuilder, HTMLWriter, etc)

  • What are the CS fundamentals behind package/dependency management?

    Often I hear about situations where companies are developing extensable in house software (the dreaded enterprise 'framework') which is supposed to support multiple 'plugins' from diffirent teams. Usually this ends up being a half baked solution that does not really work due to compatibility prolems between addins, or between addins and the framework itself. Usually this means QA have to 'rubber stamp' a global set of versions accross all plugins, or more usually plugins are released and stuff breaks in nasty ways. This problem has been solved before however, for example the package management systems like apt for debian linux. I suspect that the reason it works is that it is built from the start on a known 'Computer Science-y' concept. My question is what is it?

  • BDD on Rails - Is the community more behind Shoulda or RSpec?

    For a new application I want to start dabbling in BDD and I'm trying to decide between using RSpec or Thoughtbot's Shoulda. I like the macros that Shoulda uses, and the fact that it doesn't seem to reinvent the way Ruby/Rails does testing, but simply provides an add-on. On the other hand, the macros seem like a bit too much "magic" instead of being explicit about what you're testing (however I know from dabbling that it's annoying to write a dozen "should be invalid without xxx" two-liners on a model). To be honest I find writing specifications/tests for models to be trivially and almost boringly easy, but I find writing them for controllers to be insanely difficult because I'm never sure exactly what I should be testing or how to write it. I'm iffy on the subject of mocking and stubbing since I think they give you false assumptions (since you can just tell it to think it has whatever data you need or to pretend that Method X was called) and I know that RSpec makes heavy use of both of them. I like the documentation that RSPec produces but I'm creating an application for sale, not to give to a client so the pretty documentation isn't that useful. I like Cucumber but it seems like overkill (and yes I know it can be used with Shoulda). At this point is the Rails community in favor of RSpec or Shoulda?

  • Not possible to load DropDownList on FormView from code behind??

    I have a UserControl, containing a FormView, containing a DropDownList. The FormView is bound to a data control. Like so: <asp:FormView ID="frmEdit" DataKeyNames="MetricCode" runat="server" DefaultMode="Edit" DataSourceID="llbDataSource" Cellpadding="0" > <EditItemTemplate> <asp:DropDownList ID="ParentMetricCode" runat="server" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("ParentMetricCode") %>' /> etc, etc I am trying to populate the DropDownList from the codebehind. If this was not contained in a FormView, I would normally just do it in the Page_Load event. However, that does not work within a FormView, as as soon as I try to do it, accessing the dropdownlist in code, ie: theListcontrol = CType(formView.FindControl(listControlName), System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl) ...the data binding mechansim of the FormView is invoked, which, of course, tries to bind the DropDownList to the underlying datasource, causing a *'ParentMetricCode' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. Parameter name: value * error, since the DropDownList has not yet been populated. I tried performing the load in the DataBinding() event of the FormView, but then: theListcontrol = CType(formView.FindControl(listControlName), System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl) ...fails, as the FormView.Controls.Count = 0 at that point. Is this impossible? (I do not want to have to use a secondary ObjectDataSource to bind the dropdownlist to)

    At the moment, I have lot's of Java which does all kind of nifty stuff and I'm happy with it. The code is command line driven which have been great so far, but I recently decided I want to make the functionality available through web-services. Since my is complex and I'm happy with the way it's written , I don't want go through the pain of porting it to other languages. So I set out on a google journey to find out what web servers exist (on a Linux machine, though it's interesting to hear the answer without that limitation). From what I could find, it seems that there are two viable options: Apache Tomcat and Sun Java Server. What are the reason to choose one on top of the other? what are the strength of each and what are the weaknesses? Or, perhaps, there is a third one which is much easier, flexible and less cumbersome. Anyone?

  • iPhone - Get a pointer to the data behind CGDataProvider?

    I'm trying to take a CGImage and copy its data into a buffer for later processing. The code below is what I have so far, but there's one thing I don't like about it - it's copying the image data twice. Once for CGDataProviderCopyData() and once for the :getBytes:length call on imgData. I haven't been able to find a way to copy the image data directly into my buffer and cut out the CGDataProviderCopyData() step, but there has to be a way...any pointers? I can see a trace bit of it underneath my gradient-brushed item. If I reset the background brush to "no brush" then the selection rendering works properly. If I set the background brush to a solid color, it also fails to render as I'd expect. How can I get the selection coloring to be on top? What is trumping the selection rendering?

Once I managed to lose my wired connection as well and had to reinstall. And yet extension methods form the foundation of Linq; in fact, Linq was the reason extension methods were created. Are there specific design criteria where using extension methods are perferred over inheritance or composition? Under what criteria are they discouraged?

  • Why have minimal user/handwritten code and do everything in XAML?

    I feel the MVVM community has become overzealous like the OO programmers in the 90's - it is a misnomer MVVM is synonymous with no code. From my closed StackOverflow question: Many times I come across posts here about someone trying to do the equivalent in XAML instead of code behind. Their only reason being they want to keep their code behind 'clean'. Correct me if I am wrong, but is not the case that: XAML is compiled too - into BAML - then at runtime has to be parsed into code anyway. XAML can potentially have more runtime bugs as they will not be picked up by the compiler at compile time - from incorrect spellings - these bugs are also harder to debug. There already is code behind - like it or not InitializeComponent(); has to be run and the .g.i.cs file it is in contains a bunch of code though it may be hidden. Is it purely psychological? I suspect it is developers who come from a web background and like markup as opposed to code. EDIT: I don't propose code behind instead of XAML - use both - I prefer to do my binding in XAML too - I am just against making every effort to avoid writing code behind esp in a WPF app - it should be a fusion of both to get the most out of it. UPDATE: Its not even Microsoft's idea, every example on MSDN shows how you can do it in both.

    I have been reading page after page after page about the benefits of using YUM package installer and how NOBODY should built installs from source files (which again makes no sense to me) yet the repositories and source builders always package files in Tarball format, leaving a TON of work (which usually ends up going wrong) to the individual instead of formatting SRPMs for the end user. Has the world gone mad? I feel like I am taking crazy pills!

I believe that this is becuase the control is inside the XSL template. so is there any workaround for this ? thanks

  • What is the magic behind perl read() function and buffer which is not a ref ?

    I do not get to understand how the Perl read($buf) function is able to modify the content of the $buf variable. $buf is not a reference, so the parameter is given by copy (from my c/c++ knowledge). So how come the $buf variable is modified in the caller ? Is it a tie variable or something ?     I am working with WPF TreeView control. I am creating a hierarchical data structure and assigning it to ItemsSource and it will generate TreeviewItems automatically. By default I use IsExpanded of TreeViewItem to true. But in a particular case, I want to set IsExpanded property to false. So that treeview loading doesn't take time to generate all items. How can I set that in code since I don't have reference to TreeViewItem's instance at that time?
