  • Git: changes not reflecting on other checkouts - huh?

    - by Chad Johnson
Okay, so, I have my branches (git branch -a): * chat master remotes/origin/HEAD -> origin/master remotes/origin/chat I make changes (still with the 'chat' branch checkout out), commit, and push. I go to my server, on which I have a clone of the repository, and I do a fetch: git getch then I switch to the chat branch: git checkout --track -b chat origin/chat and I event do a pull, just to make sure everything is up to date: git pull and my changes from my other computer are NOT. THERE. What the heck am I doing wrong? If I had hair, I would have pulled it out. Thankfully I am bald. When I try a 'git commit' again, I get this # On branch chat # Changed but not updated: # (use "git add/rm <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: app/controllers/chat_controller.rb # modified: app/views/dashboard/index.html.erb # modified: app/views/dashboard/layout.js.erb # modified: app/views/layouts/dashboard.html.erb # deleted: app/views/project/.tmp_edit.html.erb.55742~ # deleted: app/views/project/.tmp_edit.html.erb.83482~ # modified: public/stylesheets/dashboard/layout.css # # Untracked files: # (use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed) # # .loadpath # .project # config/database.yml # config/environments/development.yml # config/environments/production.yml # config/environments/test.yml # log/ no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a")

  • Do You Really Know Your Programming Languages?

    - by Kristopher Johnson
I am often amazed at how little some of my colleagues know or care about their craft. Something that constantly frustrates me is that people don't want to learn any more than they need to about the programming languages they use every day. Many programmers seem content to learn some pidgin sub-dialect, and stick with that. If they see a keyword or construct that they aren't familiar with, they'll complain that the code is "tricky." What would you think of a civil engineer who shied away from calculus because it had "all those tricky math symbols?" I'm not suggesting that we all need to become "language lawyers." But if you make your living as a programmer, and claim to be a competent user of language X, then I think at a minimum you should know the following: Do you know the keywords of the language and what they do? What are the valid syntactic forms? How are memory, files, and other operating system resources managed? Where is the official language specification and library reference for the language? The last one is the one that really gets me. Many programmers seem to have no idea that there is a "specification" or "standard" for any particular language. I still talk to people who think that Microsoft invented C++, and that if a program doesn't compile under VC6, it's not a valid C++ program. Programmers these days have it easy when it comes to obtaining specs. Newer languages like C#, Java, Python, Ruby, etc. all have their documentation available for free from the vendors' web sites. Older languages and platforms often have standards controlled by standards bodies that demand payment for specs, but even that shouldn't be a deterrent: the C++ standard is available from ISO for $30 (and why am I the only person I know who has a copy?). Programming is hard enough even when you do know the language. If you don't, I don't see how you have a chance. What do the rest of you think? Am I right, or should we all be content with the typical level of programming language expertise? Update: Several great comments here. Thanks. A couple of people hit on something that I didn't think about: What really irks me is not the lack of knowledge, but the lack of curiosity and willingness to learn. It seems some people don't have any time to hone their craft, but they have plenty of time to write lots of bad code. And I don't expect people to be able to recite a list of keywords or EBNF expressions, but I do expect that when they see some code, they should have some inkling of what it does. Few people have complete knowledge of every dark corner of their language or platform, but everyone should at least know enough that when they see something unfamiliar, they will know how to get whatever additional information they need to understand it.

  • ASP Function that returns result from stored procedures

    - by Brad
I am working on a project that requires me to hop into to separate DB's. So I have figured that I need to have multiple functions inside of my VB page. The only problem I am having,is I am not to sure how to get this all accomplished. So far I have figured out the overall structure, just need help implementing that structure. Here is my idea: The main Function would call two other functions. We can Call them Sub Function 1 and Sub Function 2. So, the main Function takes the saved sessions information for the E-mail address and dumps in into Sub Function 1. It needs to open up a new connection to the db/stored procedure and RUN the following procedure and then return the result. Here is the stored procedure and what i think is correct. CREATE PROCEDURE WEB_User ( @EMAIL_ADDRESS varchar(80) = [EMAIL_ADDRESS] ) AS SELECT MEMBER_NUMBER FROM WEB_LOGIN WHERE EMAIL_ADDRESS = @EMAIL_ADDRESS So my question is, what is the function suppose to look like? how do I send the session information to the procedure? and finally, how do I return the stored procedure results and push back into the main function so it can be carried into sub function 2? Thank you in advance for your help... I really appreciate it!

  • MySQL: Is it possible to compute MAX( AVG (field) )?

    - by Brad
My current query reads: SELECT entry_id, user_id, cat_id, AVG( rating ) as avg_rate FROM entry_rate WHERE 1 GROUP BY entry_id cat_id relates to different categories: 1, 2, 3 or 4 Is there a way I can find the maximum average for each user in each category without setting up an additional table? The return could potentially be 4 maximum avg_rate for each user_id Visit the link below for example: http://lh5.ggpht.com/_rvDQuhTddnc/S8Os_77qR9I/AAAAAAAAA2M/IPmzNeYjfCA/s800/table1.jpg

  • What are the major differences between Windows CE and Windows Mobile for a programmer?

    - by Brad Bruce
What are the major differences between Windows CE and Windows Mobile for a programmer? I'd love to find a feature table, but haven't been able to find one on the Microsoft web site. I'm starting to work on a project involving industrial handheld terminals. I'm early into the design phase and need to find a comparison of Windows CE and Windows Mobile. Many of the people I'll be talking to jump on the first option that sounds "good enough". I want my first suggestion to be the best based on their needs. We're talking heavy duty hardware with a heavy duty price. I've got to get the programming questions out of the way early. We're currently a MFC6 and .Net 2.0 shop

  • How do I start a service which is defined in a different package?

    - by Brad Hein
I have two apps, one runs in namespace com.gtosoft.voyager and the other is com.gtosoft.dash. From com.gtosoft.dash I would like to start up the service which is defined in com.gtosoft.voyager... I think I need an intent, but what arg(s) would I pass to the intent before kicking it off with startService()? If they were in the same package I could just use Intent svc=new Intent (SettingsActivity.this,VoyagerService.class); startService(svc); Snippet of Manifest which defines the service <application android:icon="@drawable/voyagercarlogo" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="false"> <provider android:name="com.gtosoft.voyager.VoyagerCProvider" android:authorities="com.gtosoft.voyager"/> <service android:name=".VoyagerService"/> <activity android:name=".SettingsActivity" android:label="Voyager" android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity>

  • How to prevent the beep sound caused by alt key pressed in a WinForms TextBox?

    - by Michael Johnson
I'm creating a routine that allows the user to replicate keyboard shortcuts into a textbox for 'custom keyboard shortcuts' customization, but every time the alt key is pressed with another letter, it produces another sound. I'm capturing the keys in the textbox_keydown event to parse the modifiers + other keys into a readable Shift + A or Ctrl + Shift + B manner into that very same textbox. Should I be doing this in a different event like textbox_previewkey instead of textbox_keydown? How can I prevent the alt modifier key + a letter or number causing the Beep sound? the textbox is just a normal .net 3.5 textbox with the only edited properties of it being the ReadOnly property to false. Is there a better way I could re-do this? I'm currently just checking that if any modifiers keys are pressed and then + a-z or 0-9, then to go ahead and input the appropriately pressed keys into that same textbox like Shift + A or Ctrl + Shift + Y.

  • Sync Algorithms

Are there any good references out there for sync algorithms? I'm interested in algorithms that synchronize the following kinds of data between multiple users: calendars documents lists and outlines I'm not just looking for synchronization of contents of directories a la rsync; I am interested in merging the data within individual files.

  • Is there a way to force a user to select an autocomplete value before they can submit the form?

    - by Randy Johnson
I am using the jqueryui autocomplete feature to allow the user to select their location. I need to make sure they select a location from the autocomplete before they can submit the form. I don't want them to be able to submit the form before they select a value. My solution is after they submit make sure that the value found is in the database. The other solution would be that when they click submit or after they leave the location box and go to another field to submit the entry via ajax to ensure it is valid if not show an error and do not let them submit the form. I was wondering if there was something easier I could do, or if there is something more elegant. I realize they have to be able to type something into the box to get the autocomplete to work, so I could force them to select a value from the autocomplete because it is not a select box, so it seems that my above solutions would be the best way to go. Thoughts?

  • Variable collation with MySQL stored function?

    - by Chad Johnson
I want to do something like this in a stored procedure: IF case_sensitive = FALSE THEN SET search_collation = "utf8_unicode_ci"; ELSE SET search_collation = "utf8_bin"; END IF; INSERT INTO TABLE1 (field1, field2) SELECT * FROM TABLE 2 WHERE some_field LIKE '%rarf%' collate search_collation; However, when I do this, I get ERROR 1273 (HY000): Unknown collation: 'search_collation' Also, if I do what's suggested at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1680850/mysql-stored-procedures-use-a-variable-as-the-database-name-in-a-cursor-declara/2070021#2070021 I get Dynamic SQL is not allowed in stored function or trigger How can I use a dynamic collation?

  • Why use a Rails-like deployment mechanism over 'git pull' for releasing?

    - by Chad Johnson
To release my centralized webapp, I COULD have a vhost pointed to some directory and then just do a 'git pull' when I want to release, updating the files. But Rails has a different deployment mechanism: it copies files to a subdirectory and then points a symlink ('current') to that new subdirectory. I understand that it probably more acceptable to do a Rails-like deployment because the release is built in some directory, and then the symlink is pointed to that directory, so this is much faster, and it's less likely that users would experience weird issues while a release is happening. Are there any other advantages to the Rails approach? Or, is a 'git pull' approach actually more widely accepted?

  • Tracking DB changes with Zend Framework?

    - by Chad Johnson
I am trying to decide between the Zend Framework and Ruby On Rails for my web application. If I go with ZF, I need the following: A way to incrementally track changes to my database, as with RoR's migration feature (001_something.sql, 002_something_else.sql). A place to put SQL for the next release of my software. At work in our custom PHP solution, we just have release.sql, which gets run, archived, and blanked out upon release. ZF has Zend_Db_Schema_Manager, which does the same thing, but I'm not interested as its not official, complete, or maintained. Is there an official mechanism that ZF provides for doing something similar to what I described? EDIT I ended up going with Rails. Nothing compares.

  • Learning OpenGL ES 1.x

    - by Kristopher Johnson
What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts. Note: For answers about learning general OpenGL, see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/62540/learning-opengl Some resources I've found: http://khronos.org/opengles/1_X/ http://www.imgtec.com/powervr/insider/sdk/KhronosOpenGLES1xMBX.asp OpenGL Distilled by Paul Martz (a good refresher on OpenGL basics)

  • Are there any PHP Frameworks (e.g. CodeIgniter) that support database connections on a per user acco

    - by Brad G
I'm looking into developing a multi-tenant SaaS application, and I found several sites that describe a solid way to separate the data using tenantIDs and updateable views. e.g. This blog post It all hinges on the ability to have your user accounts authenticated from a master users table and then having their respective database connections use those user-specific credentials. This way, the views can pull the userid and map it to the tenantID to display that user's view. However, most PHP frameworks tend to be very static when it comes to database connections (stored in text config files). They appear to be at odds. Does anyone know: a) how to make CodeIgniter handle this gracefully? b) a different PHP framework that might?

  • jQuery .getJSON() Not Parsing All Objects

    - by Brad
I'm using jQuery's .getJSON function to parse a set of search results from a Google Search Appliance. The search appliance has an xslt stylesheet that returns the results as JSON data, which I validated with both JSONLint and Curious Concept's JSON Formatter. According to FireBug, the full result set is returned from the XMLHTTPRequest, but I tried dumping the data (with jquery.dump.js) and it only ever parses back the first result. It does successfully get all the Google Search Protocol stuff, but it only ever sees one "R" object (or individual result). Has anybody had a similar problem with jQuery's .getJSON? I know it likes to fail silently if the JSON is not valid, but like I said, I validated the results with several validators and it should be good to go. Edit: Clicking this link will show you the JSON results returned for a search for the word "google": http://bigbird.uww.edu/search?client=json_frontend&proxystylesheet=json_frontend&proxyrefresh=1&output=xml_no_dtd&q=google jQuery only retrieves the first "R" object, even though all "R" objects are siblings.

  • Dynamic Dispatch without Virtual Functions

    - by Kristopher Johnson
I've got some legacy code that, instead of virtual functions, uses a kind field to do dynamic dispatch. It looks something like this: // Base struct shared by all subtypes // Plain-old data; can't use virtual functions struct POD { int kind; int GetFoo(); int GetBar(); int GetBaz(); int GetXyzzy(); }; enum Kind { Kind_Derived1, Kind_Derived2, Kind_Derived3 }; struct Derived1: POD { Derived1(): kind(Kind_Derived1) {} int GetFoo(); int GetBar(); int GetBaz(); int GetXyzzy(); // plus other type-specific data and function members }; struct Derived2: POD { Derived2(): kind(Kind_Derived2) {} int GetFoo(); int GetBar(); int GetBaz(); int GetXyzzy(); // plus other type-specific data and function members }; struct Derived3: POD { Derived3(): kind(Kind_Derived3) {} int GetFoo(); int GetBar(); int GetBaz(); int GetXyzzy(); // plus other type-specific data and function members }; and then the POD class's function members are implemented like this: int POD::GetFoo() { // Call kind-specific function switch (kind) { case Kind_Derived1: { Derived1 *pDerived1 = static_cast<Derived1*>(this); return pDerived1->GetFoo(); } case Kind_Derived2: { Derived2 *pDerived2 = static_cast<Derived2*>(this); return pDerived2->GetFoo(); } case Kind_Derived3: { Derived3 *pDerived3 = static_cast<Derived3*>(this); return pDerived3->GetFoo(); } default: throw UnknownKindException(kind, "GetFoo"); } } POD::GetBar(), POD::GetBaz(), POD::GetXyzzy(), and other members are implemented similarly. This example is simplified. The actual code has about a dozen different subtypes of POD, and a couple dozen methods. New subtypes of POD and new methods are added pretty frequently, and so every time we do that, we have to update all these switch statements. The typical way to handle this would be to declare the function members virtual in the POD class, but we can't do that because the objects reside in shared memory. There is a lot of code that depends on these structs being plain-old-data, so even if I could figure out some way to have virtual functions in shared-memory objects, I wouldn't want to do that. So, I'm looking for suggestions as to the best way to clean this up so that all the knowledge of how to call the subtype methods is centralized in one place, rather than scattered among a couple dozen switch statements in a couple dozen functions. What occurs to me is that I can create some sort of adapter class that wraps a POD and uses templates to minimize the redundancy. But before I start down that path, I'd like to know how others have dealt with this.

  • How do I find the user that has both a cat and a dog?

    - by brad
I want to do a search across 2 tables that have a many-to-one relationship, eg class User << ActiveRecord::Base has_many :pets end class Pet << ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :users end Now let's say I have some data like so users id name 1 Bob 2 Joe 3 Brian pets id user_id animal 1 1 cat 2 1 dog 3 2 cat 4 3 dog What I want to do is create an active record query that will return a user that has both a cat and a dog (i.e. user 1 - Bob). My attempt at this so far is User.joins(:pets).where('pets.animal = ? AND pets.animal = ?','dog','cat') Now I understand why this doesn't work - it's looking for a pet that is both a dog and a cat so returns nothing. I don't know how to modify this to give me the answer I want however. Does anyone have any suggestions? This seems like it should be easy - it doesn't seem like an especially unusual situation.

  • How to deploy to multiple redundant production servers with "cap deploy"?

    - by Chad Johnson
Capistrano is working great to deploy to a single server. However, I have multiple production API servers for my web application. When I deploy, my code needs to get deployed to every API server at once. Specifying each server manually is NOT the solution I am looking for (e.g. I don't want to do "cap api1 deploy; cap api2 deploy"). Is there a way, using Capistrano, to deploy to all servers at once, with just a simple "cap deploy"? I'm wondering what changes I would need to make to a typical deploy.rb file, whether I'd need to create a separate file for each server, and whether and how the Capfile would need to be changed. Also, I need to be able to specify a different deploy_to path for each server. And ideally, I wouldn't have to repeat things in different config files for different servers (eg. wouldn't have to specify :repository, :application, etc. multiple times). I have spent hours searching Google on this and looking through tutorials, but I have found nothing helpful. Here is a snippet from my current deploy.rb file: set :application, "testapplication" set :repository, "ssh://domain.com//srv/hg/#{application}" set :scm, :mercurial set :deploy_to, "/srv/www/#{application}" role :web, "domain.com" role :app, "domain.com" role :db, "domain.com", :primary => true, :norelease => true Should I just use the multistage extension and do this? task :deploy_everything do system "cap api1 deploy" system "cap api2 deploy" system "cap api2 deploy" end That could work, but I feel like this isn't what this extension is meant for...

  • RFCOMM Before Android 2.0?

    - by Brad Hein
I have several apps which I wrote using the standard SDK. They all connect to RFCOMM devices using bluetooth, so at present, I can only support devices which are 2.0 or newer. What options are available for backporting a bluetooth app to pre-2.0 apps while re-writing as little code as possible? Thank you.

  • Creating Instance of Python Extension Type in C

    - by Brad Zeis
I am writing a simple Vector implementation as a Python extension module in C that looks mostly like this: typedef struct { PyObject_HEAD double x; double y; } Vector; static PyTypeObject Vector_Type = { ... }; It is very simple to create instances of Vector while calling from Python, but I need to create a Vector instance in the same extension module. I looked in the documentation but I couldn't find a clear answer. What's the best way to do this?
