  • dpkg broken while upgrading Debian Etch to Lenny

    Good day! While trying to recover a box to lenny it seems I've broken things. It upgrades libc and glib after that dpkg seems to be broken. I can run apt-get, but it gets segmentation fault from dpkg: # apt-get -f install Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 316 not upgraded. 9 not fully installed or removed. Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used. /bin/sh: line 1: 4606 Segmentation fault /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure --apt E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault.   • S.M.A.R.T. broken sectors

    Recently I received my hard drive (LaCie) that I've sent away for warranty, my disk failed, and I used Palimpsest Disk utility to check if anything was wrong in the S.M.A.R.T Status. And it said that there were a few broken sectors. So the next day, I went to the store and told the story. 4 weeks later I actually got my drive back. The first thing I did was plugging it in and starting the disk utility, and weirdly it showed me pretty much the exact same things, even the values of most tests were the same as they were before when my drive broke. The serial number is different though, but it does show a very peculiar value. Now I'm wondering, I'm almost sure it's the exact same drive and it still says I've got broken sectors, does it just say that because it has been cached in the drive somewhere while LaCie DID actually fix it? Or should I run the extended self test (which seems to take hours) first? Also I've tried the smartctl command tool, it says the drive has smart support, but it doesn't show anything, it says that it's enabled, but then it says that it's disabled, picture below The picture of the Disk utility: Thanks in advance

  • How do you use multiple versions of the same R package?

    In order to be able to compare two versions of a package, I need to able to choose which version of the package that I load. R's package system is set to by default to overwrite existing packages, so that you always have the latest version. How do I override this behaviour? My thoughts so far are: I could get the package sources, edit the descriptions to give different names and build, in effect, two different packages. I'd rather be able to work directly with the binaries though, as it is much less hassle. I don't necessarily need to have both versions of the packages loaded at the same time (just installed somewhere at the same time). I could perhaps mess about with Sys.getenv('R_HOME') to change the place where R installs the packages, and then .libpaths() to change the place where R looks for them. This seems hacky though, so does anyone have any better ideas?

  • Confirm disk is broken when it passes all diagnostics

    I have a system with a potentially broken disk, but the disk passes all manner of diagnostics. I have been unable to confirm that the disk is broken. What are my options? I could just replace the disk, but because this situation is very similar to another more severe situation I have (long story), I'd like to actually make a proper diagnosis as opposed to randomly binning hardware. The issue and history is this: I had a Debian Linux PC (500 MHz P3) acting as router, nagios and munin. It crashed every couple of weeks. No logs or dmesg could be obtained (because it's an old Compaq that only boots when you configure it as keyboardless, making connecting a keyboard later, once it's booted, impossible). At the time, I just replaced the computer with another Compaq (P4 2.4 GHz) because I thought the hardware was faulty. However, it still crashed every couple of weeks. the difference is that on this computer, I can still SSH into it. It gives all kinds of errors on hda. I'd like to confirm that the disk is broken, but nothing I do confirms this: SMART error logs shows no errors. Normally when a disk starts acting up, SMART my pass, but it still records a read-error in the error log. SMART self-test (smartctl -t long /dev/sda) completes without errors. re-allocated sector count (a tell-tale parameter) has been 31 all its life, even when the disk was still in use in my desktop PC years ago, and it still is. The figure never changed. dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=4096 passes with flying colors. What else can I do to assess the health of the drive? Again, this is not about making this router fully functional again, this is a disk forensic question, because it just so happens that I have another server that potentially has the same problem, and knowing the answer to this will possibly help me greatly.     Hi, I have to run a tool on around 300 directories. Each run take around 1 minute to 30 minute or even more than that. So, I wrote a python script having a loop to run the tool on all directories one after another. my python script has code something like: for directory in directories: os.popen('runtool_exec ' + directory) But when I run the python script I get the following error messages repeatedly: .. tail: write error: Broken pipe date: write error: Broken pipe .. All I do is login on a remote server using ssh where the tool, python script, and subject directories are kept. When I individually run the tool from command prompt using command like: runtool_exec directory it works fine. "broken pipe" error is coming only when I run using the python script.   • How to install (old) packages for Ubuntu 9.04?

    Based on some excellent feedback by Mark here (http://serverfault.com/questions/285598/should-i-clone-a-physical-server-to-create-a-vm-for-a-staging-server), today I was able to use the vmware converter to clone my production server for a staging server. However the nic won't come up no matter what I do. I attempted to inistall vmware tools, as I suspect that the fact that it is not installed might prevent the nic from working. (I have the nic set as a vmxnet3 card in the vm settings). The install failed because there were several dependencies missing as well as the Linux headers. Given that Ubuntu 9.04 has been EOL'd, the packages I need to install to get the vmware tools to install are no longer available. I doubt the ubuntu 9.04 install CD has the packages on it. What are my options? I'd rather not upgrade the version of Ubuntu yet, as the point of the vm right now is to maintain parity with the production server. Might I have better luck resetting the driver to use vmxnet2 instead of the vmxnet3? Thanks in advance! Chris

  • How to update all the SSIS packages&rsquo; Connection Managers in a BIDS project with PowerShell

    During the development of a BI solution, we all know that 80% of the time is spent during the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) phase. If you use the BI Stack Tool provided by Microsoft SQL Server, this step is accomplished by the development of n Integration Services (SSIS) packages. In general, the number of packages made ??in the ETL phase for a non-trivial solution of BI is quite significant. An SSIS package, therefore, extracts data from a source, it "hammers" :) the data and then transfers it to a specific destination. Very often it happens that the connection to the source data is the same for all packages. Using Integration Services, this results in having the same Connection Manager (perhaps with the same name) for all packages: The source data of my BI solution comes from an Helper database (HLP), then, for each package tha import this data, I have the HLP Connection Manager (the use of a Shared Data Source is not recommended, because the Connection String is wired and therefore you have to open the SSIS project and use the proper wizard change it...). In order to change the HLP Connection String at runtime, we could use the Package Configuration, or we could run our packages with DTLoggedExec by Davide Mauri (a must-have if you are developing with SQL Server 2005/2008). But my need was to change all the HLP connections in all packages within the SSIS Visual Studio project, because I had to version them through Team Foundation Server (TFS). A good scribe with a lot of patience should have changed by hand all the connections by double-clicking the HLP Connection Manager of each package, and then changing the referenced server/database: Not being endowed with such virtues :) I took just a little of time to write a small script in PowerShell, using the fact that a SSIS package (a .dtsx file) is nothing but an xml file, and therefore can be changed quite easily. I leave the reader to search for these details. Using TFS as versioning system, before running the script I checked out the packages and, after the script executed succesfully, I checked in them.

    how can I fix broken IIS on Windows 7 ? Deinstalling it via "Windows Features" doesn't help. Apparently it doesn't uninstall IIS completely so on my subsequent attempts to install it installer hangs and I can see in Process Explorer that it keeps trying to launch svchost.exe -iis for 10 mins and then gives me error message. Reinstalling whole Windows with all apps would take me another 3 days :/ Please help.

I tried Handbrake (reads the file and resets the source to None), OggConvert, Avidemux and mencoder fail to read the file, I cannot seem to reencode this file. Since then, two problems have occurred and persisted: the boot splash screen has reduced down to a black screen with random color blocks/text/gibberish at the top; and the themes are broken, as in the light themes have checkboxes in menus the same color as the background, and the dark themes don't correctly change the font colors in the top menu. Help? On a side note, is there a need to upgrade from 10.04 RC to LTS?

  • Safe to remove Python2.6 files?

    I'm using Linux Mint 11 (will upgrade soon), and I've noticed that, even though I don't have any python2.6 packages installed with apt, there's a bunch of residual python2.6 files scattered around my drive, including, but not limited to, dist-packages in /usr/lib/python2.6 and various /usr/share stuff. Is there any way to test if these files are still being used? I'm tempted to sudo rm -rf the lot of them, but I'm scared it'll break stuff. Also, does anyone have any idea where these files could have come from? I believe I had python2.6 installed once upon a time, but I made sure to --purge them, so there shouldn't be any trace of them left, right? EDIT: after using a quick script to check all of the files, it appears most of them belong to important packages, so I won't try weeding out the few which I know are probably useless. Although I am curious why so many packages have python2.6 files when I don't even have it installed.     I am writing a post-install script for Ubuntu in Perl (same script as seen here). One of the steps is to install a list of packages. The problem is that if apt-get install fails in some of many different ways for any one of the packages the script dies badly. I would like to prevent that from happening. This happens because of the ways that apt-get install fails for packages that it doesn't like. For example when I try to install a nonsense word (i.e. typed in the wrong package name) $ sudo apt-get install oblihbyvl Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package oblihbyvl but if instead the package name has been obsoleted (installing handbrake from ppa) $ sudo apt-get install handbrake Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package handbrake is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'handbrake' has no installation candidate $ apt-cache search handbrake handbrake-cli - versatile DVD ripper and video transcoder - command line handbrake-gtk - versatile DVD ripper and video transcoder - GTK GUI I have tried parsing the results of apt-cache and apt-get -s install to try to catch all possibilities before doing the install, but I seem to keep finding new ways to allow failures to continue to the actual install system command. My question is, is there some facility either in Perl (e.g. a module, though I would like to avoid installing modules if possible as this is supposed to be the first thing run after a new install of Ubuntu) or apt-* or dpkg that would let me be sure that the packages are all available to be installed before installing and if not fail gracefully in some way that lets the user decide what to do?
