  This is a consumer app, so I will care about storage costs - I don't want to have 5x copies of data lying about. The app shards very well, so I can use MySQL and not have scaling issues. Amazon EBS has a nice baseline+snapshot backup capability that uses S3. This should have a light footprint (in terms of storage cost). BUT: the magnolia.com story scares the crap out of me: basically flawless block-level backup of a corrupt DB or filesystem. Is there anything that is nearly as storage efficient as EBS at the MySQL level?

  Hello, I know there is landscape from canonical, but it has some $$ costs. Als there is webmin, and it can be used as a cluster management tool. Also there is m23, probably the most usable and interesting peace of manager software. But, what would you suggest to install and use on following configuration: 1) 100 desktop users, against an AD with quest authentication services installed. (ubunt8.04,9.04,9.10,10.04) 2) 50 servers (debian sid, lenny , ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04) We work on different software, so each group of persons need different configurations, each server has different pourposses, nothing is clusterized. And we have a good enough backup software.   Hiya, I'm trying to find an integrated PM solution which will give my business all of the following: Timesheeting so we can track time spent on tasks Holiday planner (integrated with timesheet and project management Project management tool, integrating the above, with milestones, gantt chart, dependancies etc. Forecasting ability (nice to have, but not a requirement) Reporting capability - especially time spent on projects, costs etc. Now yeah, that's quite a lot of functionality, I appreciate that! But currently we've got 3 systems, none of which really talk to each other and it's a right headache. So far we've looked at: OpenWorkbench - not enough features Basecamp - not enough features and too reliant on online MS Project - too expensive? Can anyone throw some other hats into the ring which maybe I've not heard about? Really interested to hear how other people have approached this, it's not an unusual business requirement! Thanks!

• How can I store Rails uploads on a remote server (and not a common cloud host)?

  I would like to store uploads from a Rails application on a different server than my application server. I want to keep costs to a minimum and host this other server in-house. I am planning to use Carrierwave for uploads. It seems Carrierwave interfaces with Fog for remote hosts. Is there a way I could set the other server to act as a Fog provider? How would I go about this setup? Or, is there some better and easier way to go about all this?

  What would be the ideal hardware setup for pushing lots of bandwith on a tube site? We have ever-expanding cloud storage where users upload the movies, then we have these web-delivery machines which cache the FLV files on its local harddrives and deliver them to users. Each cache machine can deliver 1200 mbits/s , if it has SAS 8 harddrives. Such a cache machine costs us $550/month for 8x160gb -- so each machine can cache only 160GB at any given time. If we want to cache more then 160gb , we need to add another machine..another $550/month..etc. This is very un-economical so I am wondering if we have any experts here who can figure out a better setup. I've been looking into "gluster FS", but I am not sure if this thing can push a lot of bandwith. Any ideas highly appreciated. Thank you!

• SQL 2008 Mirroring, how to failover from the mirror database?

  I have configured a database mirroring setup in SQL 2008 using the High-safety, Synchronous mode, without automatic failover. I don't have a Witness instance. Regarding high availability, I understand Mirroring is a better strategy than Log Shipping (faster and smoother failover), and cheaper than Clustering (because of license and hardware costs). According to the MS docs, to do the failover you need to access to the Principal database and in the "Mirror" options click the "Failover" button. But I want to do this from the Mirror database, because what would be the benefit as all this setup is being done in case the Principal server knocks down? Evidently I am missing something. If Mirroring is not a solution for server downtime (as would be Clustering, if I understand correctly), then which practical (i.e. real world examples) cases would benefit from Mirroring for high-availability purposes? • Problem with MSDE 2000 5 minute keepalive over ISDN

  We have a SQL Server transactionally pushing replicate data to an MSDE 2000 SP3a subscriber over ISDN. Prior to a recent upgrade to bring us to the MSDE 2000 level we pushed to MSDE 1. We are finding that there is now a 5 minute keepalive being instigated from MSDE 2000 which we cannot account for. Further, we can find no way to either disable it or lengthen the keepalive interval. Not surprisingly, we are finding a marked increase in ISDN line costs due to these previously non-existent keepalive packets! Please note that we are assuming that it is an MSDE 2000 server issue, but it could equally be some behaviour related to the way that replication is operating on MSDE 2000. Unfortunately, as yet, we have not identified a replication configuration parameter that affects the keepalive in any way. Can anyone advise how we might indentify a root cause for this problem (and ideally a fix)?

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop.   If been using "dbForge Query Builder" lately and I'm gotten used to the ease of building and testing a query, specially for those complex ones with inner joins, aliases and multiple conditionals. The expiry date of the trial is about to come, and while wanting to remain on the legal side for this I'd rather not pay the 50USD it costs (although I must say it's pretty cheap for what it does). So my question would be: Are there any free alternatives to replace this visual query builder? I've failed to find any and fear that my only two options are paying for it, or going to the dark side.

  in LVM1 there was a limit of 65k extends. So size of extent had to been chosen carefully between wasted space on partitions (to big extent) and maximal possible size of logical volume (too small extent). in lvm2 (according to http://docstore.mik.ua/manuals/hp-ux/en/5992-4589/apa.html) the limit is ~16 million extents. so the default size of 4mb gives ~60TB of LV size. so is there any point in making the extent larger than 4-16mb on a desktop? is there any performance degradation or other costs of having big number of extents?

• Is LiveDrive.com reliable?

  I'm currently using DropBox (50GB account) which works fine, but at this moment I'm not impressed with its speed. I have a 60down/6up connection and only LiveDrive can use almost the full bandwidth of my connection. Dropbox often is very slow (avg. 100-500Kb/s compared to LD at 6MB/s). If I only look at the speed and storage costs then LD is much better, but I don't have enough experience with LD to be able to say something about reliability. Can anyone comment on this? Thx.

  Will be starting a small graphics design firm soon, with 20 employees. Therefore need software to manage the network. Have bought a bulk license of Windows 7. I have a spare computer which can act as a server if necessary, but its an ancient Dell machine (Pentium-III). If required I would purchase an extra machine, but would like to avoid unnecessary costs at start up. • What is a good alternative to Camtasia Studio (screen recording not required)?

  I'm looking for a good alternative to Camtasia Studio - really just the video editing part. My current workflow looks like this: Record audio (with Audacity) Save screenshots of the subject matter (websites) Import audio and screenshots into Camtasia Use the zoom and callout tools in Camtasia to go along with the spoken audio and highlight certain parts of the sites Given that Camtasia costs $300 (I've been using a trial version), I'd like to find something else that can do this well. I suspect that a lot of the pricetag for Camtasia is because of the screencasting features. I've tried Sony Vegas Movie Studio, but it was really a lot more than I need. I'd like something relatively simple (so that new users can pick it up relatively quickly), with the zoom and callout functionality that Camtasia has. Any suggestions? Edit for clarity: I'm looking for a program that will let me combine the screenshots and audio, and (most importantly) that has features equal to or better than Camtasia for text overlays, highlighting areas on the screen, etc.

• Setting up MySQL database replication [without restarting mysql]

  I'm trying to setup MySQL db replication, it seems pretty straight forward. I was using this tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/mysql_database_replication Now I run a rather large MySQL database for a very large website, and in this tutorial it asks me to restart MySQL to apply the new settings in the /etc/my.cnf file. I'm try to avoid that step at all costs, as I know that restarting MySQL can take a few minutes on my machine (due to large logs/dbs), and I don't want any downtime. Is there a way to apply the necessary settings WITHOUT fully restarting Mysql?

• Remote Yum mirror

  I have a bunch of remote computers that must be updated to the most recent packages for RedHat 4 and RedHat 5. I am using mrepo to mirror the RHN packages, however the remote computers do not have an internet connection. Because of this I have to update the mirror server that is part of the remote computers with a dvd. This is to cut down shipping costs to just a dvd. I am attempting to script this so I can fit all of the new packages on a CD or a DVD. I send updates about once or twice a month depending on package requirements. So my question is, is their a good method to do this so that the only things transferred are the new packages? I wish I could just use rsync. Thanks.

  This topic has been touched on before but not really answered. I have a dual monitor system and the colors differ wildly. I currently live Buenos Aires where color correction hardware costs premium prices. I do some graphic design, but don't require a pro-level calibration. That said, I'd like my monitors to be set as close to "true color" as possible. I've located the useful and free Monitor Calibration Wizard, but it seems to adjust the entire system internally at startup. I could use the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet to set a different ICC or ICM profile for each monitor, but the Monitor Calibration Wizard outputs its own format for profiles.

  What are the options for backup software for: HOST - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with HyperV VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Exchange 2010 VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SQL Express / SharePoint VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Terminal Services (10 users working on it) VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with AD/DNS What I'm looking at is possibility of having an offsite backup thru FTP, maybe copy to usb/esata/lan drives for easy taking backup data outside of company. What I've been looking at: - Symantec Exec Backup 2010 System Recovery has an offsite backup but I would need 5 licenses and it doesn't have granular recovery. - Symantec Exec Backup 2010 seems OK but a bit expensive - Microsoft DPM 2010 requires full SQL Standard and for each machine I would need 4 Enterprise licenses. But does it allow Offsite backup without need for additional license and server outside of company (for doing DPM backup of DPM). What other options? This is 10 people company and so the costs matter but also convenience and security. Offsite backup is requirement.

Is there an online storage service to which Windows Backup can save the backup files to? Can I make Windows Backup store the backed up data to an online storage service? I do not want to manually upload the backup files. I want it to save directly to the cloud. Doesn't matter if the service costs me some $$$. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition.

• rpd over https using a linux client

  My employer switched from vpn and rdp to using what our admin calls "rdp over https". Since that switch I find myself unable to connect to the "new" rdp server. I think the progress is as follows: A rdp gateway-server is connected via tls the requested sever (different from the gateway-server) is then connected through the tls connection. In windows mstsc-settings the server name is the "internal network name" of the machine I wish to connect. And on the last tab (in German it is called "leistung" - could be activity) I go to the "connection from everywhere" settings and set the gateway-server under gateway-server. Now: Is there any way to use this scenario under linux (apart from a virtual machine running Windows)? I am interested in free ideas (e.g. is it possible to create a tls tunnel and connect through that using freerdp/rdesktop?) non-free ideas. As long as they work I'll worry about the costs later. Free ideas would be better :-)

• Rackspace Cloud Sites: Compute Cycles exploding. Very expensive

  Since last week my compute cycles (CC) went through the roof (Rackspace Cloud Sites). Normally I stay under the 10,000 cycles per month . Now this month I already have more than 75,000 compute cycles. I don't have more visitors and I did not change anything in the code. I looked in the raw log files, that didn't help either... This explosion of CC already costs me more than 750 USD right now. And still counting. Anyone know what to do? I have contacted Rackspace last week. But still no solution/answer.... Looks like Rackspace is liking the money! Help! Thanks.

If I use a thread inside the web app probably it will use cpu cycles to listen this queue forever and then affecting performance. And if I reserve a single heroku worker dyno it costs $34.50 per month. It makes sense to pay this price for it for a single queue poll? Or it's not the case to use a worker for it? • Does an unmanaged 4/8-port GBit Ethernet switch with a GBIC port exist?

  I'm looking for a simple unmanaged switch with 4-8 GBit Ethernet ports and a fiber port (either as a GBIC slot or pre-installed with a 1000BASE-SX port). Does something like that exist? [EDIT] I want to connect to places in my home without drilling large holes though the floors. Therefore, I'm looking for a cheap way to connect two GBit switches via fiber. I tried with a media converter (GBit <- multimode fiber) but that costs about 50% throughput. So I was hoping that there is a cheap, small GBit switch which has a GBIC slot). All I found so far are very expensive managed switches with 12 or 24 ports for industry use.

• Is there such a thing as an IP femtocell, and what does it do?

  My dad mentioned a co-worker suggested using a device, that might use CDMA to route calls through IP to save costs on a certain overseas project we're on- since our home base is quite far from there. I've never heard of such a device, so if it does exist, I'm wondering, if it's specific to particular ISPs, or if you can just pick one off the shelf, plug it into an arbitrary Internet connection, and make calls using it and a cellphone of some sort? As you can tell, details are sketchy, so... if such a device doesn't exist, saying so might be a right answer ;)
