  • WSUS 3.0 SP2 installation fails at "configuring database" step.

    - by flashkube
Attempting to install WSUS 3.0 SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise system. I'm asking the setup to create a new database on one of our existing SQL Server 2005 systems. When the setup gets to the "configuring database" step it stops and throws "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." The two logs it suggests I look at are below. I'm not seeing any errors that mean anything to me. Any direction you can give will be greatly appreciated. I am trying to install the above but am getting the following errors when its attempting to install the setup support files, This is the first error that occurs during installation of the setup support files TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup ------------------------------ The following error has occurred: The installer has encountered an unexpected error. The error code is 2337. Could not close file: Microsoft.SqlServer.GridControl.dll GetLastError: 0. I have also tried using the web platform installer to install the express version instead but the SQL Server Installation fails with that also. The management studio installs fine but not the server. I have checked to make sure that the Windows Installer is started and it is. Cant seem to find an answer for this anywhere as all previous reported issues appear to be related to XP. I did have the express edition installed on the machine previously but uninstalled it to upgrade to the full version, I wish I hadn't now. Can anyone kindly offer any advice or point me in the right direction to stop me going insane with this? Any advice will be appreciated. • Installing Lubuntu 14.04.1 forcepae fails

    - by Rantanplan
I tried to install Lubuntu 14.04.1 from a CD. First, I chose Try Lubuntu without installing which gave: ERROR: PAE is disabled on this Pentium M (PAE can potentially be enabled with kernel parameter "forcepae" ... Following the description on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE, I used forcepae and tried Try Lubuntu without installing again. That worked fine. dmesg | grep -i pae showed: [ 0.000000] Kernel command line: file=/cdrom/preseed/lubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- forcepae [ 0.008118] PAE forced! On the live-CD session, I tried installing Lubuntu double clicking on the install button on the desktop. Here, the CD starts running but then stops running and nothing happens. Next, I rebooted and tried installing Lubuntu directly from the boot menu screen using forcepae again. After a while, I receive the following error message: The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again. Hitting Enter brings me to the desktop. For what errors should I search? And how? Finally, I rebooted once more and tried Check disc for defects with forcepae option; no errors have been found. Now, I am wondering how to find the error or whether it would be better to follow advice c in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE: "Move the hard disk to a computer on which the processor has PAE capability and PAE flag (that is, almost everything else than a Banias). Install the system as usual but don't add restricted drivers. After the install move the disk back." Thanks for some hints! • An XEvent a Day (9 of 31) – Targets Week – pair_matching

    - by Jonathan Kehayias
Yesterday’s post, Targets Week – synchronous_event_counter , looked at the counter Target in Extended Events and how it could be used to determine the number of Events a Event Session will generate without actually incurring the cost to collect and store the Events.  Today’s post is coming late, I know, but sometimes that’s just how the ball rolls.  My original planned demo’s for today’s post turned out to only work based on a fluke, though they were very consistent at working as expected,...(read more)

  • DNS lookup when using a CDN

    - by Steven Wu
Using a CDN can vastly improve the load time of a website. I been thinking of using it to host all my external files like CSS, JS, Images, Videos etc. However I was thinking when linking to a CDN, wouldn't the browser have to use additional DNS lookup? So wouldn't this be counter productive? Or is the benefit to host every external files on a CDN out weighs the additional cost of a DNS lookup? What are your thoughts?

  • MBO in software development

    - by Euphoric
I just found out our middle sized software development company is going to implement MBO. As a big fan of Agile, I see this as counter-intuitive, because I believe it is impossible to create a objective, that is measurable. Especialy where creativity, experience, knowledge and profesionalism are important traits and expanding those are objectives and goals of many. So my question is, what is your opinion on using MBO in software development? And if there are development companies using MBO, either successfuly or unsucessfuly.

  • Can an agile shop really score 12 on the Joel Test?

    - by Simon
I really like the Joel test, use it myself, and encourage my staff and interviewees to consider it carefully. However I don't think I can ever score more than 9 because a few points seem to contradict the Agile Manifesto, XP and TDD, which are the bedrocks of my world. Specifically: the questions about schedule, specs, testers and quiet working conditions run counter to what we are trying to create and the values that we have adopted in being genuinely agile. So my question is: is it possible for a true Agile shop to score 12?

  • T4 Performance Counters explained

    - by user13346607
Now that T4 is out for a few month some people might have wondered what details of the new pipeline you can monitor. A "cpustat -h" lists a lot of events that can be monitored, and only very few are self-explanatory. I will try to give some insight on all of them, some of these "PIC events" require an in-depth knowledge of T4 pipeline. Over time I will try to explain these, for the time being these events should simply be ignored. (Side note: some counters changed from tape-out 1.1 (*only* used in the T4 beta program) to tape-out 1.2 (used in the systems shipping today) The table only lists the tape-out 1.2 counters) 0 0 1 1058 6033 Oracle Microelectronics 50 14 7077 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} pic name (cpustat) Prose Comment Sel-pipe-drain-cycles, Sel-0-[wait|ready], Sel-[1,2] Sel-0-wait counts cycles a strand waits to be selected. • Problems with my Intel HD GC

    - by Stevan Hranisavljevic
I'm running Ubuntu and I have an Intel HD graphic card, I installed Counter Strike 1.6 and I cannot launch wide screen display mode, parts from the both side of my screen are black. Also when I am playing some clips on YouTube, both sides on the screen are black and I don't see the whole picture. When I click on "About this computer" I'm getting this: Intel® Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2 But I can't find the driver for my Intel GC. I have this driver installed: X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx

  • Operations Manager SQL monitoring issue?

    - by merrillaldrich
We're in the early stages of implementing System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2, and from what I've see so far it looks really good. I am still interested to see the depth of performance counter information that it'll collect and store, but haven't been able to really dig into that just yet. There is one issue I am seeing and I don't know if others have come across this (could not find much online about it either): computing a database file free space alert rule is a little complicated, and it...(read more)

  • Proactive Reputation Management and Your SEO-SEM Company

Reputation management is often seen as necessary only when a negative publicity attack is under way. While working with an accomplished reputation management company in such circumstances can counter an attack and minimize potential damage, the best results are actually seen when companies start working with a company that will both build and protect their reputation prior to any kind of attack.

  • Pidgin script with Python/ Get Focus Signal

    - by Mr Alles
I am creating a script in Python to integrate Pidgin with Unity (12.04), I've managed to do the counting notifications system using the Launcher API. But I dont know what event or signal is activated when the conversation window gains focus (To clear the message counter). I've tried some of the signals available on the documentation of Pidgin but none of them worked. Is there any GTK(or anything) event that is triggered when the window chat gets focus?

  • I'm looking to learn how to apply traditional animation techniques to my graphics engine - are there any tutorials or online-resources that can help?

    - by blueberryfields
There are many traditional animation techniques - such as blurring of motion, motion along an elliptical curve rather than a straight line, counter-motion before beginning of movement - which help with creating the appearance of a realistic 3D animated character. I'm looking to incorporate tools and short cuts for some of these into my graphics engine, to make it easier for my end users to use these techniques in their animations. Is there a good resource listing the techniques and the principles behind them, especially how they might apply to a graphics engine or 3D animation?

  • Building Performance Metrics into ASP.NET MVC Applications

When you're instrumenting an ASP.NET MVC or Web API application to monitor its performance while it is running, it makes sense to use custom performance counters. There are plenty of tools available that read performance counter data, report on it and create alerts based on it. You can then plot application metrics against all sorts of server and workstation metrics. This way, there will always be the right data to guide your tuning efforts.

  • Multiple setInterval in a HTML5 Canvas game

    - by kushsolitary
    I'm trying to achieve multiple animations in a game that I am creating using Canvas (it is a simple ping-pong game). This is my first game and I am new to canvas but have created a few experiments before so I have a good knowledge about how canvas work. First, take a look at the game here. The problem is, when the ball hits the paddle, I want a burst of n particles at the point of contact but that doesn't came right. Even if I set the particles number to 1, they just keep coming from the point of contact and then hides automatically after some time. Also, I want to have the burst on every collision but it occurs on first collision only. I am pasting the code here: //Initialize canvas var canvas = document.getElementById("canvas"), ctx = canvas.getContext("2d"), W = window.innerWidth, H = window.innerHeight, particles = [], ball = {}, paddles = [2], mouse = {}, points = 0, fps = 60, particlesCount = 50, flag = 0, particlePos = {}; canvas.addEventListener("mousemove", trackPosition, true); //Set it's height and width to full screen canvas.width = W; canvas.height = H; //Function to paint canvas function paintCanvas() { ctx.globalCompositeOperation = "source-over"; ctx.fillStyle = "black"; ctx.fillRect(0, 0, W, H); } //Create two paddles function createPaddle(pos) { //Height and width this.h = 10; this.w = 100; this.x = W/2 - this.w/2; this.y = (pos == "top") ? 0 : H - this.h; } //Push two paddles into the paddles array paddles.push(new createPaddle("bottom")); paddles.push(new createPaddle("top")); //Setting up the parameters of ball ball = { x: 2, y: 2, r: 5, c: "white", vx: 4, vy: 8, draw: function() { ctx.beginPath(); ctx.fillStyle = this.c; ctx.arc(this.x, this.y, this.r, 0, Math.PI*2, false); ctx.fill(); } }; //Function for creating particles function createParticles(x, y) { this.x = x || 0; this.y = y || 0; this.radius = 0.8; this.vx = -1.5 + Math.random()*3; this.vy = -1.5 + Math.random()*3; } //Draw everything on canvas function draw() { paintCanvas(); for(var i = 0; i < paddles.length; i++) { p = paddles[i]; ctx.fillStyle = "white"; ctx.fillRect(p.x, p.y, p.w, p.h); } ball.draw(); update(); } //Mouse Position track function trackPosition(e) { mouse.x = e.pageX; mouse.y = e.pageY; } //function to increase speed after every 5 points function increaseSpd() { if(points % 4 == 0) { ball.vx += (ball.vx < 0) ? -1 : 1; ball.vy += (ball.vy < 0) ? -2 : 2; } } //function to update positions function update() { //Move the paddles on mouse move if(mouse.x && mouse.y) { for(var i = 1; i < paddles.length; i++) { p = paddles[i]; p.x = mouse.x - p.w/2; } } //Move the ball ball.x += ball.vx; ball.y += ball.vy; //Collision with paddles p1 = paddles[1]; p2 = paddles[2]; if(ball.y >= p1.y - p1.h) { if(ball.x >= p1.x && ball.x <= (p1.x - 2) + (p1.w + 2)){ ball.vy = -ball.vy; points++; increaseSpd(); particlePos.x = ball.x, particlePos.y = ball.y; flag = 1; } } else if(ball.y <= p2.y + 2*p2.h) { if(ball.x >= p2.x && ball.x <= (p2.x - 2) + (p2.w + 2)){ ball.vy = -ball.vy; points++; increaseSpd(); particlePos.x = ball.x, particlePos.y = ball.y; flag = 1; } } //Collide with walls if(ball.x >= W || ball.x <= 0) ball.vx = -ball.vx; if(ball.y > H || ball.y < 0) { clearInterval(int); } if(flag == 1) { setInterval(emitParticles(particlePos.x, particlePos.y), 1000/fps); } } function emitParticles(x, y) { for(var k = 0; k < particlesCount; k++) { particles.push(new createParticles(x, y)); } counter = particles.length; for(var j = 0; j < particles.length; j++) { par = particles[j]; ctx.beginPath(); ctx.fillStyle = "white"; ctx.arc(par.x, par.y, par.radius, 0, Math.PI*2, false); ctx.fill(); par.x += par.vx; par.y += par.vy; par.radius -= 0.02; if(par.radius < 0) { counter--; if(counter < 0) particles = []; } } } var int = setInterval(draw, 1000/fps); Now, my function for emitting particles is on line 156, and I have called this function on line 151. The problem here can be because of I am not resetting the flag variable but I tried doing that and got more weird results. You can check that out here. By resetting the flag variable, the problem of infinite particles gets resolved but now they only animate and appear when the ball collides with the paddles. So, I am now out of any solution.

  • Mutable Records in F#

    - by MarkPearl
I’m loving my expert F# book – today I thought I would give a post on using mutable records as covered in Chapter 4 of Expert F#. So as they explain the simplest mutable data structures in F# are mutable records. The whole concept of things by default being immutable is a new one for me from my C# background. Anyhow… lets look at some C# code first. using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; namespace MutableRecords { public class DiscreteEventCounter { public int Total { get; set; } public int Positive { get; set; } public string Name { get; private set; } public DiscreteEventCounter(string name) { Name = name; } } class Program { private static void recordEvent(DiscreteEventCounter s, bool isPositive) { s.Total += 1; if (isPositive) s.Positive += 1; } private static void reportStatus (DiscreteEventCounter s) { Console.WriteLine("We have {0} {1} out of {2}", s.Positive, s.Name, s.Total); } static void Main(string[] args) { var longCounter = new DiscreteEventCounter("My Discrete Counter"); recordEvent(longCounter, true); recordEvent(longCounter, true); reportStatus(longCounter); Console.ReadLine(); } } } Quite simple, we have a class that has a few values. We instantiate an instance of the class and perform increments etc on the instance. Now lets look at an equivalent F# sample. namespace EncapsulationNS module Module1 = open System type DiscreteEventCounter = { mutable Total : int mutable Positive : int Name : string } let recordEvent (s: DiscreteEventCounter) isPositive = s.Total <- s.Total+1 if isPositive then s.Positive <- s.Positive+1 let reportStatus (s: DiscreteEventCounter) = printfn "We have %d %s out of %d" s.Positive s.Name s.Total let newCounter nm = { Total = 0; Positive = 0; Name = nm } // // Using it... // let longCounter = newCounter "My Discrete Counter" recordEvent longCounter (true) recordEvent longCounter (true) reportStatus longCounter System.Console.ReadLine() Notice in the type declaration of the DiscreteEventCounter we had to explicitly declare that the total and positive value holders were mutable. And that’s it – a very simple example of mutable types.

  • Why do "Joke" programming languages exist? [closed]

    - by ThePlan
First of all please be aware this post contains some abusive language but I hope it will not bother anyone. I apologize for the bad language but that's what the name is. As I've been doing documentation on existing programming languages attempting to make a complete list of them I stumbled across terrible programming languages, which were clearly not made for actual use and implementation due to their insane difficulty. Languages such as Brainfu*k and LOLCODE or Whitespace are fool languages because they have no real use. For example, a "Hello world" program written in BrainFu*k. Taken from Wikipedia: The following program prints "Hello World!" and a newline to the screen: +++++ +++++ initialize counter (cell #0) to 10 [ use loop to set the next four cells to 70/100/30/10 > +++++ ++ add 7 to cell #1 > +++++ +++++ add 10 to cell #2 > +++ add 3 to cell #3 > + add 1 to cell #4 <<<< - decrement counter (cell #0) ] > ++ . print 'H' > + . print 'e' +++++ ++ . print 'l' . print 'l' +++ . print 'o' > ++ . print ' ' << +++++ +++++ +++++ . print 'W' > . print 'o' +++ . print 'r' ----- - . print 'l' ----- --- . print 'd' > + . print '!' > . print '\n' or another example taken from LOLCODE language: HAI CAN HAS STDIO? PLZ OPEN FILE "LOLCATS.TXT"? AWSUM THX VISIBLE FILE O NOES INVISIBLE "ERROR!" KTHXBYE These languages are very difficult to learn/read/work with. My question is - Why do they exist? What is the purpose of them? Also, is there an official "name" for these type of languages?

So my question is: is there a way to install back the ubuntu classic volume control so i can let go of this applet alltogether? thanx

  • Deletes that Split Pages and Forwarded Ghosts

    - by Paul White
Can DELETE operations cause pages to split? Yes. It sounds counter-intuitive on the face of it; deleting rows frees up space on a page, and page splitting occurs when a page needs additional space. Nevertheless, there are circumstances when deleting rows causes them to expand before they can be deleted. The mechanism at work here is row versioning (extract from Books Online below): Isolation Levels The relationship between row-versioning isolation levels (the first bullet point) and page splits is...(read more)

  • Wait Statistics in Microsoft SQL Server

    - by KKline
When it comes to troubleshooting in relational databases, there's no better place to start than wait statistics. In a nutshell, a wait statistic is an internal counter that tells you how long the database spent waiting for a particular resource, activity, or process. Since wait statistics are categorized by type, one look will quickly tell the variety of problem that needs your attention, assuming you know meaning for Microsoft's lingo for each wait type....(read more)

  • Running CLOC (count lines of code) on Windows...or alternative

    - by Chelonian
I'm trying to use CLOC on Windows (XP) to count lines of code, and I can't get it to work. I downloaded the latest Win installer for CLOC 1.5.6, ran it (which caused a "DOS" window to open, scroll with text rapidly, then close before I could read anything) and then wrote cloc at the cmd prompt...and Windows doesn't recognize it as a command. Or if there is another easy-to-use lines of code counter that one could recommend (that runs on Windows), I'd be happy to try that.
