• Resizing JPEG image during decoding

  I'm working on a program that creates thumbnails of JPEG images on the fly. Now I was thinking: since a JPEG image is built from 8x8-pixel blocks (Wikipedia has a great explanation), would it be possible to skip part of the decoding? Let's say that my thumbnails are at least 8 times smaller than the original image. We could then map each 8x8 block in the input file to 1 pixel in the decoding output, by including only the constant term of the discrete cosine transform. Most of the image data can be discarded right away, and need not be processed. Moreover, the memory usage is reduced by a factor of 64. I don't want to implement this from scratch; that'll easily take a week. Is there any code out there that can do this? If not, is this because this approach isn't worthwhile, or simply because nobody has thought of it yet?

• Tree data structure in iphone with coredata

  Hi, I am looking to store a tree structure in CoreData for iphone. Can someone give me some tips on the best way to go about this? Basically I want to have a bunch of folders that people can dive into in a table view, and I want to have leaves of the tree be photos. The thing is, I want to be able to let the user edit these folders on-the-fly and add folders and content (photos) at their discretion. I'm relatively new to CoreData. Any help would be appreciated.   For our small team of 20 developers, we used do code review like: Make a label in svn and publish the label to the reviewers Reviewers checkout the code and add comments in line (with marker like: // REVIEWER_NAME::REVIEW COMMENT:) After all comments are in, reviewer checks in the code, preferably with new label. Developer checks the comments and makes changes (if appropriate) Developer keeps an excel sheet report for considered changes and reasons for ignored comments Problem: Developer needs to keep track of multiple labels which might have same comments Sometimes we even do One on One review and if we really have time, even do Table review (team of reviewers looks at the code on projector, on the fly, and pass comment) I was wondering: Are you guys using any specific tool which helps to do code reviews smoother? I have heard of Code Collaborator. But have anyone used that? Is it worth the money?

• Alternatives to GameKIt for iPhone to iPhone transfer

  I am needing to transfer information as an NSData object from one iPhone to another inside an application and was originally planning on using Bluetooth/GameKit, but the data looks like it will be in the neighborhood of 500KB - 1MB in size. I don't think this is going to fly with GameKit (Bluetooth) as it will take forever and it seems like people are having all kinds of issues with GK anyway. I'd prefer the users to not have to be on the same WiFi network to make it work but am running out of options and time so I'd probably be happy with whatever works. What is a reasonable alternative? The simpler the setup the better or something with sample code would be greatly appreciated and preferred. Thanks.

• Compile-time lookup array creation for ANSI-C?

  A previous programmer preferred to generate large lookup tables (arrays of constants) to save runtime CPU cycles rather than calculating values on the fly. He did this by creating custom Visual C++ projects that were unique for each individual lookup table... which generate array files that are then #included into a completely separate ANSI-C micro-controller (Renesas) project. This approach is fine for his original calculation assumptions, but has become tedious when the input parameters need to be modified, requiring me to recompile all of the Visual C++ projects and re-import those files into the ANSI-C project. What I would like to do is port the Visual C++ source directly into the ANSI-C microcontroller project and let the compiler create the array tables. So, my question is: Can ANSI-C compilers compute and generate lookup arrays during compile time? And if so, how should I go about it? Thanks in advance for your help!

• ASP.NET MVC 2 Dynamic QueryString Management

  Hello All, I am very new to ASP.NET MVC and currently, I am involved in developing a new application in ASP.NET MVC 2. I am having problem in managing a long querystring parameters that comes from dBase. For example, in any non-mvc app the following URL works well: http ://example.com/test.aspx?first_name=fname&last_name=lname&email_id=email&address1=add1&address2=add2&city=city&state=state&zip_code=zip and so on. The QueryString parameter can be determined on the fly (i.e. at run-time). Now for dynamic QueryString how routing will be done? Also for a simple URL, the URL will be as follows (in ASP.NET MVC): http ://example.com/test/id/category But for above mentioned dynamic & long QueryString how the URL will look like? • Why isn't my assets folder being installed on emulator?

  Where are my assets being installed to? I utilize an assets folder in my new app. I have two files in the folder. When I install my app on the emulator, I cannot access my assets, and furthermore I cannot see them on the emulator filesystem. Extracted my apk and confirmed the assets folder exists: $ ls -ltr assets/ total 16 -rw-rw-r--. 1 brad brad 1050 2010-05-20 00:33 schema-DashDB.sql -rw-rw-r--. 1 brad brad 9216 2010-05-20 00:33 dash.db On the emulator, no assets folder: # pwd /data/data/com.gtosoft.dash # ls -l drwxr-xr-x system system 2010-05-20 00:46 lib # I just want to package a pre-built database with my app and then open it to obtain data when needed. Just tried it on my Moto Droid, unable to access/open the DB, just like the emulator: DBFile=/data/data/com.gtosoft.dash/assets/dash.db Building the DB on the fly from a schema file is out of the question because its such a slow process (about 5-10 statements per second is all I get for throughput).

• Adding audio channel using ffmpeg

  Hi all, I am working on ffmpeg and trying to add a audio stream on the fly. I am using AudioQueues and I get raw audio buffer. I am encoding audio with linear PCM and hence the audio I get will be of raw format, which I know ffmpeg does accept it. But I cannot figure out how. I have looked into AVStream, where in we have to create a new stream for this audio channel but how do I encode it to a video which is already initialized in another AVStream structure. Overall, I would like to have an idea of the architecture of ffmpeg. I found it difficult to work since it is least documented. Any pointers or details are appreciated. • Real world uses of Reflection.Emit

  In all the books I've read on reflection they often say that there aren't many cases where you want to generate IL on the fly, but they don't give any examples of where it does make sense. After seeing Reflection.Emit as a job requirement for a gaming company I was curious where else it's being used. I'm now wondering if there are any situations you've seen in the real world were it was the best solution to the problem. Perhaps it is used as an implementation to a design pattern? Note I imagine PostSharp / AOP uses it.

• Storable Geocoding/reverse Geocoding services

  Im currently looking into an easy way to query and store Latitude/Longitude for a given address. There are a plentitude of services out there, but none actually allows me to store the data I retieve (i.e. Google Maps API TOS, Yahoo! Maps API TOS). As I wan't to use them for a distance search I can't really query the data on the fly. Are there any services that acutally allow to store the location you get for an adress? And I want to do it more or less worldwide. (As a side question, I might need the other way around soon, getting from latitude/longitude to an address or place name, but this falls under the same terms as the above).

• Using Timthumb to Resize Images from CKEditor

  I am using CKEditor to do basic text and image input into my website. I have noticed that it is quite sporadic in it's method of generating HTML for images when you add them. (Sometimes it might use height and width tags, other times it might use CSS). I use Timthumb for on the fly image resizing on a number of other websites and find it very useful. I use a mod_rewrite rule in my .htaccess file to allow me to create domains like http://localhost/images/800x600/image.jpg and achieve resizing. I would like to somehow incorporate this into CKEditor. I cannot find how to do this looking through the documentation so I have tried post-processing the data produced by CKEditor using Regex, however as mentioned before CKEditor seems to be too sporadic to be able to get this to work all the time. Anyone else done this before? How did you achieve it?

  Hi, i've seen many article on encrypt/decrypt of file and typically a button is used to choose the file for encrypt and another button to decrypt the file. i've seen some application like truecrypt and probably others which does file encryption on-the-fly with transparent. this means that when a encrypted file is clicked to access, it will automatically decrypt and play/open the file. then when the file is closed, it will automatically encrypt again. what are the ways to do this in c# compact framework?

  Hi, I have a nested list of ul elements. I would like to decrease the font size by a couple of pixels for each level down. So for example the first li elements would have font size 18px, then nested elements of that would have font size 16px and any nested elements of that would have font size 14px etc. However once the font size gets to a certain size e.g. 8px I would like to stop making them any smaller. These lists are generated on the fly so I have no way of knowing how deep they are going to be so can't just hard code the css to a certain level. Is there a way in css or JQuery where I could apply this type of formatting?

I've been creating classes and objects so say i created a class called Member: public class Member { public int MemberID; public string FirstName; public string LastName; public string UserName; } and i create a new object of that class by doing this: Member Billy = new Member(); Billy.UserName = "Jonesy"; Billy.FirstName = "Billy"; Billy.LastName = "Jones"; Thats all fine but what if I've queried a database and gotten back 5 members, can I create objects on the fly? Or what is the best way to store these members in memory? I've used VB.Net where I would just add them into a datatable. But I've never really done any object-oriented programming before and thought since I'm learning C sharp nows the best time to learn OOP.. Any help most appreciated! Jonesy

  Hi. I have to write a solution that uses different databases with different structure from the same code. So, when a user logs to the application I determine to which database he/she is connected to at runtime. The user can create tables and columns at any time and they have to see the change on the fly. The reason that I use one and the same code the information is manipulates the same way for the different databases. How can I accomplish this at runtime? • Somebody is storing credit card data - how are they doing it?

  Storing credit card information securely and legally is very difficult and should not be attempted. I have no intention of storing credit card data but I'm dying to figure out the following: My credit card info is being stored on a server some where in he tworld. This data is (hopefully) not being stored on a merchant's server, but at some point it needs to be stored to verify and charge the account identified by merchant submitted data. My question is this: if you were tasked with storing credit card data what encryption strategy would you use to secure the data on-disk? From what I can tell submitted credit card info is being checked more or less in real time. I doubt that any encryption key used to secure the data is being entered manually, so decryption is being done on the fly, which implies that the keys themselves are being stored on-disk. How would you secure your data and your keys in an automated system like this?

The problem is that WriteSubstitution takes as a parameter a HttpResponseSubstitutionCallback callback which looks like this: public delegate string HttpResponseSubstitutionCallback(System.Web.HttpContext context) This is where things get complicated since there is no easy/fun way to generate the html on the fly. You have to do a hack like this. So the question is: Is there an easier way to make a partial view not cached ?

• Implementation of a general-purpose object structure (property bag)

  We need to implement some general-purpose object structure, much like an object in dynamic languages, that would give us a possibility of creating the whole object graph on-the-fly. This class has to be serializable and somehow user friendly. So far we have made some experiments with class derived from Dictionary<string, object> using the dot notation path to store properties and collections in the object tree. We have also find an article that implements something similar, but it doesn't seem to fit completely into our picture either. Do you know about some good implementations / libraries that deal with a similar problem or do you have any (non-trivial) ideas that could help us with our own implementation ? Also, I probably have to say that we are using .NET 3.5, so we can't take advantage of the new features in .NET 4.0 like dynamic type etc. (as far as I know it's also not possible to use any subset of it in .NET 3.5 solution).

• Prawn PDF with Rails mailer?

  Hi Everyone, I have successfully created an email that sends on creation of a Kase, but now I need to attach a PDF that is created on the fly by Prawn and Prawno. Basically when you visit a kase such as application.com/kase/1 you just append the URL with .pdf i.e. application.com/kase/1. I spent ages getting the PDF to work and look how I wanted, but I can't figure out how to add the PDF to an auto sending email - mainly because I cannot work out how to give it a link as it's auto generated. Has anyone ever managed to get this to work? Thanks, Danny

• Perl - Internal File (create and execute)

  I have a quick question about creating files with perl and executing them. I wanted to know if it was possible to generate a file using perl (I actually need a .bat script) and then execute this file internally to the program. I know I can create files, and I have with perl, however, I'm wanting to do this internally to the program. So, what I want it to do is actually create a batch script internally to the program (no file is actually written to the disk, everything remains in memory, or the perl program), and then once it completes the writing of the file, I'd like to be able to actually execute this file, and then discard the file it just wrote. I'm basically trying to have it create a batch script on the fly, so that I can just have output text files from the output of the script, rather than creating the batch script on disk, then executing it, and then deleting the batch file from disk when its done. Can this be done and how would I go about doing this? Regards, Drew

• Can't find how to import as one object or how to merge

  I need write a script in blender that creates some birds which fly around some obstacles. The problem is that I need to import a pretty large Collada model (a building) which consists of multiple objects. The import works fine, but the the building is not seen as 1 object. I need to resize and move this building, but I can only get the last object in the building (which is a camera)... Does anyone know how to merge this building in 1 object, group, variable... so I can resize and move it correctly? • Creating Tables in Word Programatically

  I am generating tables and writing them to word on the fly. I do not know how many tables there will be each time i write the data to word and the problem I am having is the second table is written inside the first cell of my first table. If there was a third table it is put inside the first cell of my second table. Is there a way to move the cursor out of the table? I have tried creating a new range with each table also but the same thing happens. I have also tried things like tbl.Range.InsertParagraphAfter() The closest I came was using the Relocate method, but this only worked for two tables. Thanks Ben

  So the site I'm working on has a filter system that operates by passing a key and value system through a querystring. The whole site is going through a re-factor soon and I'm maintaining the existing site so before we discuss the RIGHT way to implement this, I just need ideas for changing my delimiter. The current format is like this: cf=<key>:<value> The problem is, I've recently run into an issue because some of our new values for this filter contain : in them. I.e: cf=MO_AspectRatio:16:10 The value is being UrlEncoded, but the browsers are de-coding %3a into : on the fly because the : doesn't inherently break the urls. I need some suggestions for url-safe delimiters that aren't :,-,_,&,? that makes sense. I'm not looking for a solution like () or something wild.

Allow a user to specifiy a connection string to a sql db Allow a user to specify a table in the db Allow a user to specify columns from the specified table Generate Views & a Controller with Crud methods on the fly for the specified table columns in a subdirectory on the current web app. I'm aware that there are apps that currently do this (such as sharepoints list creation stuff), but i'd like to see how this was accomplished and recreate it for my own learning purposes.
