• How to connect AD Explorer from Sysinternals to Global Catalog

  I'm using the sysinternals AD Explorer quite frequently to search and inspect an Active Directory without any big problems. But now i'd like to connect not only to a single AD Server. Instead i like to inspect the global catalog. If i enter within the AD Explorer connect dialog only the dns name of the machine (e.g. dns.to.domain.controller) that is serving the global catalog i only receive the concrete domain for which it is responsible, but not the whole forest (that's normal behaviour and expected by me). If i'm going to add the default port number (3268) for the global catalog in the form dns.to.domain.controller:3268 AD Explorer will simply crash without any further message. The global catalog itself works as expected under the given name and port number, cause our apache server use exactly this address and port number to authenticate some users. So any hints or tips to access the global catalog out of AD Explorer? Or there are any other nice tools like AD Explorer out there that doesn't have any problems to access the global catalog?

• Detecting Idle Time with Global Mouse and Keyboard Hooks in WPF

  Years and years ago I wrote this blog post about detecting if the user was idle or active at the keyboard (and mouse) using a global hook. Well that code was for .NET 2.0 and Windows Forms and for some reason I wanted to try the same in WPF and noticed that a few things around the keyboard and mouse hooks didn’t work as expected in the WPF environment. So I had to change a few things and here’s the code for it, working in .NET 4. I took the liberty and refactored a few things while at it and here’s the code now. • Can an LDAP query on AD provide the netbios domain name for a single account when using the Global Catalog?

  I am using ADSI Edit to look at LDAP properties of a single user account in AD. I see properties such as userPrincipalName, but I do not see one for the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or the netbios domain name. We will be setting up the Global Catalog (GC) to give us LDAP access to multiple domains and through configuration in an application we map LDAP properties to user profile properties within the application. With typical AD the FQDN and netbios domain name are the same for all users, but with the GC involved we need this additional information. We really only need the netbios domain name (the FQDN is not good enough). Maybe there is a LDAP query that can be done to request this information from a more top-level object in AD?

  I'm having problems with external native DLL. I'm working on ASP.NET 1.1 web application and have this DLL which I load through DLLImport directives.   I have software that can launch and control multiple firefox browsers on Ubuntu EC2 images. I need to run a small load test against a QuickTime Streaming server. The stream starts automatically when loaded in a browser that has the QuickTime plugin, so I don't need to automate the stream once it starts. Alternately, I can also make these machines run arbitrary ruby code or executables. How can I get these ubuntu machines to pull in the stream? Also, how can I capture bandwidth usage (maybe a shell script?) on the worker machines?

• jquery load links not clickable

  ok i am loading a separate page with links in it, into a page named index.php. it loads fine, but when i click one of the links inside the loaded content, nothing happens. they dont act as links. but if i do a alert('hi'); after the load('page.html'); then it will work. any ideas on getting this to work without alerting something after it loads? oh also i cant use a callback, unless there is a way to update the get variable because the page loading, has a $_GET variable, and the links inside the loaded page are supposed to update the $_GET variable. anyways is there a way to make the links clickable after loading the page?

• Fetch and load a whole page with AJAX

  I realize that it's generally not a good idea to do this but the reason why I want to is because it's a really heavy page and I want to show the user progress of the download and when it's done load the page. I can either do this with some kind of spinner but is it possible for me to show the actual progress? Can I see how much and what data has been downloaded? • How can I write classes that don't rely on "global" variables?

  When I took my first programming course in university, we were taught that global variables were evil & should be avoided at all cost (since you can quickly develop confusing and unmaintainable code). The following year, we were taught object oriented programming, and how to create modular code using classes. I find that whenever I work with OOP, I use my classes' private variables as global variables, i.e., they can be (and are) read and modified by any function within the class. This isn't really sitting right with me, as it seems to introduce the same problems global variables had in languages like C. So I guess my question is, how do I stop writing classes with "global" variables? Would it make more sense to pretend I'm writing in a functional language? By this I mean having all functions take parameters & return values instead of directly modifying class variables. If I need to set any fields, I can just take the output of the function and assign it instead of having the function do it directly. This seems like it might make more maintainable code, at least for larger classes. What's common practice? Thanks!

• jquery load and tinymce gives me a "g.win.document is null" on subsequent loads

  So... very excited as first post on stackoverflow I have this page, clicking a button will call editIEPProgram(). editIEPProgram counts how many specific divs exists, adds another div, loads it with html from '/content/mentoring/iep_program.php' and then calls $("textarea.tinymce").tinymce to add a rich text editor to the newly added text boxes. It finally adds a tab which handles the new stuff and bob is your uncle. It ALMOST works. Clicking the button the first adds everything and everything woks, on the second and subsequent click, everything is added but the tinymce fails to initiate (I guess) and gives me "g.win.document is null". • Load Balance WCF and Share a Remote MSMQ for High Throughput

  After a ton of reading in books and on the web, I have noticed hints of information that WCF and MSMQ can be used in achieving high throughput. The information I have seen mentions using multiple WCF services in a farm that reads from a single MSMQ queue. The problem is that I have found paragraphs here and there that mentions that high throughput can be done, but I cannot seem to find a document of how to implement it. The following is an excerpt from a MSDN article. The following paragraph is from Best Practices for Queued Communication http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms731093.aspx To achieve higher throughput and availability, use a farm of WCF services that read from the queue. This requires that all of these services expose the same contract on the same endpoint. The farm approach works best for applications that have high production rates of messages because it enables a number of services to all read from the same queue. This is what I'm trying to solve. I have an intranet application where a client sends a request to a WCF service. But I want the ability to load balance the WCF services on multiple servers in a farm. I also want these WCF services in the farm to do transactional reads from a remote MSMQ when an item is available in the Queue. If this is possible, an issue I have is that I do not understand the activation process of WCF to retrieve messages from a remote queue. If this is possible, does anyone know of any articles or Webcasts that would explain it in detail? BarDev

• How to balance the root domain using NS records?

  I have two load balancers that balance incoming traffic across multiple data centers. These work fine. I can test them out by doing an 'nslookup mydomain.com xIP' I have now taken out DNS services with DYN.com to allow me to manage the DNS Zone file so that typing mydomain.com will ask my load balancers what the IP address is to resolve. Step 1 : the NS record for www. I set up A records (glue) for ns1 & ns2, then the corresponding NS record to delegate the DNS lookup to the balancers instead of DYN.com's nameservers. ns1.mydomain.com A [ip address of load balancer 1] ns2.mydomain.com A [ip address of load balancer 1] www.mydomain.com NS ns1.mydomain.com www.mydomain.com NS ns2.mydomain.com All is well - when I type www.mydomain.com, the requests get delegated to my load balancers who provide the IP address of the endpoint and the connect is made successfully. Step 2 : the NS record for root. This is where I run into problems. I need customers to be able to type 'mydomain.com' (without the www) and ALSO get delegated to the load balancers for the IP address. However - of the research I have done, and through the DYN control panel, it seems to be not allowed to provide an NS record for the root - as this overrides the default NS servers. How can i delegate both the root, and the www. to my load balancers?

  Here are requirements: 1. High Availability 2. Load Balancing First configuration 1. Two linux servers have been configured with one static IP for each: 10.17.243.11, 10.17.243.12 2. Keepalived has been installed and configured with one VRRP instance to provide one virtual IP (10.17.243.10 as VIP, 10.17.243.11 as master and 10.17.243.12 as backup). 3. Everything works fine. The VIP is assigned to the master server (10.17.243.11) as long as it is up and running. As soon as it goes down, the VIP will be assigned to the backup server (10.17.243.12). 4. The problem here is all communication goes to the master server. Second configuration 1. I found active-active configuration for Keepalived which is possible by defining more than one VRRP instance. So that both server have two IPs (real 10.17.243.11 and virtual 10.17.243.10 for server #1 and real 10.17.243.12 and virtual 10.17.243.20 for server #2. 2. Everything works fine. we have two VIPs which are accessible (HA). But all communication coming to each IP still goes to one single machine (either server #1 or #2 depending on the IP). However I found some tricks on the DNS to overcome this limitation. But it's not acceptable in our case. Question: Is there any way to have one virtual IP which is assigned to both servers? By that I mean both servers are handling some part of workload (like the thing we do in web server load balancing)? By using either keepalived or some other tools? Thanks in advance.

• How to set up a load/stress test for a web site?

  I've been tasked with stress/load testing our company web site out of the blue and know nothing about doing so. Every search I make on google for "how to load test a web site" just comes back with various companies and software to physically do the load testing. For now I'm more interested in how to actually go about setting up a load test like what I should take into account prior to load testing, what pages within my site I should be testing load against and what things I'm going to want to monitor when doing the test. Our web site is on a multi-tier system complete with a separate database server (IIS 7 Web Server, SQL Server 2000 db). I imagine I'd want to monitor both the web server and the database server for testing load however when setting up scenarios to load test the web server I'd have to use pages that query the database to see any load on the database server at the same time. Are web servers and database servers generally tested simultaneously or are they done as separate tests? As you can see I'm pretty clueless as to the whole operation so any incite as to how to go about this would be very helpful. FYI I have been tinkering with Pylot and was able to create and run a scenario against our site but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the results or if the scenario I created is even a scenario worth measuring for our site.
