  • Java Developers: Open-source Modules, Great Tools, Opportunity.

    - by Paul Sorensen
The role of Java developer may just be better than ever. An excellent article in Java Magazine discusses the availability of web-based tools that help development teams more effectively manage their projects and modules. If you are a Java developer you should definitely read this article. I especially like the Expert Opinions scattered throughout the article. These highlight real-world usage of the latest and greatest development tools.  As you consider steps to move your career forward, consider Java certification. Oracle has over 15 unique Java certification credentials available. The process of becoming certified in Java and preparing for your exams will require you to study, learn and practice (code). All of this activity will help you sharpen your skills and increase your working knowledge of Java - making you a better developer and more valuable member of your team. You can use the Certification Finder on the Oracle certification homepage to find a Java certification that is right for you. Thanks!

  • What You Said: Your Favorite Remote Desktop Access Tools and Tips

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite remote desktop access tools and tips; now we’re back to highlight your favorite tools and how you use them. The two prevailing themes among all the tools suggested were pricing and ease of deployment. On that front, LogMeIn had a strong following. Mtech writes: I use Logmein and am amazed the free version can be used even for business purposes. I also felt so bad and wanted to pay for the Pro version just out of gratitude but they called me personally from the USA and said why pay when the free version does all you need! What a company. • Connect Digest : 2011-06-27

    - by AaronBertrand
Sorry I have fallen off the Connect Digest wagon for the past few weeks; been a little swamped since returning from SQLCruise Alaska. Not sure I'll be able to assemble a digest every week, but I'll certainly try to keep a steady pace. This week I wanted to highlight a few suggestions around indexed views. With the coming of SQL Server code-named "Denali" we will be pushed toward the new columnstore index as an alternative to indexed views. But this won't be for all cases, and it likely won't be available...(read more)

  • 13.10 Unable to link Google account

    - by Lolwhites
When I try to connect my Google account, the following happens: I open "Online Accounts" - the Google account appears in the left hand margin. When I highlight it, I am invited to grant access. On clicking on "Grant Access", I get a window with the following message: Erreur :invalid_request Invalid response_type: code&access_type=offline En savoir plus Détails de la requête response_type=code&access_type=offline scope=https://docs.google.com/feeds/ https://www.googleapis.com/auth/googletalk https://www.googleapis.com/auth/userinfo.email https://www.googleapis.com/auth/userinfo.profile https://picasaweb.google.com/data/ redirect_uri=https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ client_id=759250720802-4sii0me9963n9fdqdmi7cepn6ub8luoh.apps.googleusercontent.com type=web_server Clicking the "Cancel" button returns me to Online Accounts, but a new window opens with the same error messages, and pops up repeatedly when I try to close it. I have tried to remove the account and re-add, but when I click on "Remove Account" I am asked if I'm sure, but nothing happens when I click "Remove"; the dialogue box disappears but the account stays. There's a bug report on Launchpad here but it says the bug has been fixed. Not for me, apparently...

  • What grammatical tense should I write my specifications in?

    - by John
We are currently writing functional and technical specifications in a two column format; summary sentence and technical detail. The details often refer to an appendix with diagrams, layout designs ect. However I am struggling with what tense to write it in: With past tense as if the work is done I struggle to show highlight extensions of exiting work. Future tense as in it needs to do X starts to sound like a to do list or Tense neutral very hard as it has either going to be done or is done. To add further confusion this specification may be read by people who do not have English as a first language.

  • Oracle Linux Friday Spotlight - November 8, 2013

    - by Chris Kawalek
Happy Friday, everyone! This week, I want to highlight a really wonderful resource, the Oracle Linux Wiki on wikis.oracle.com. You can find a lot of in-depth technical information there and it’s probably worthy of a bookmark to check in on occasionally. One of my favorite types of content on the wiki is the do it yourself hands on labs. We do these at in person events like Oracle OpenWorld and also online for our Virutal SysAdmin Days, and those are great because you can get real-time assistance if you have any questions. But, if you’re eager to learn more about Oracle Linux and don’t want to wait for one of those events, you can step through these labs in your own time. All of the information you need is on the wiki. We’ll see you next week! -Chris

  • Herzlichen Glückwunsch!

    - by cjandaus

  • Can I use GPL software in a commercial application

    - by Petah
I have 3 questions about the GPL here: If I use GPL software in my application, but don't modify or distribute it, do I have to release my application under the GPL? What if I modify some software that my application uses. Then do I have to release my application under the GPL, or can I just supply the modified software under the GPLs terms. And what if I use GPL software, but don't modify it, can I distribute it with my application? My case in point is, I have a PHP framework which I use the GeSHi library to highlight some output. Because GeSHi is GPL, does my framework have to be GPL? Can I modify GeSHi for particular use cases of my application if I supply the modifications back to the GeSHi maintainers? Can I redistribute my framework with GeSHi?

  • How can I set 'Print to File' as my default printing option?

    - by edm
At the moment when I print, my Deskjet-3050 is selected as the default printer. I would like 'Print to File' to be the default 'printer' without using cups-pdf I specifically do not want to use cups-pdf because of the way it renders text (see below). I am not entirely sure what it is doing but it seems as though it renders the text as bitmaps and embeds them in pdf (as I am not able to highlight/copy/search embedded text as I am using a standard Print to File pdf). N.B. this is not a dupe of: Can I make PDF the default for 'print to file'

  • Can't install wireless driver or get ubuntu to recognize ethernet cable

    - by Catherine
I'm brand new to Ubuntu and I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to connect to the internet. When I try to activate the Broadcom STA wireless driver, it says "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log." So I try the steps detailed here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1967515&highlight=jockey Problem is, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet cable either. I tested the cable with another laptop and it works just fine. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • How can I have a Bluetooth Keyboard Auto-Connect at Startup?

    - by Grant
I have a bluetooth keyboard for my HTPC. I pair it with my computer via bluetooth, and it works fine. However, when I turn off the keyboard or my computer, it has to connect again (which requires me entering a passcode on the computer and keyboard) when I turn them back on. I've looked through many forums and through that I have found that I'm missing some seemingly vital bluetooth files: /etc/default/bluetooth /etc/init.d/bluetooth /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf In the instructions that I've found online so far, I must change certain lines in any of these files. I am unable to, since they do not exist. Am I missing a dependency or something? I've also tried installing Blueman but that didn't help at all. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick). • What You Said: How Do You Set Reminders?

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite tricks for staying on top of your tasks with timely reminders. Now we’re back to highlight some great reader tips (including a bit of software older than some of our readers). Most of us have to-do lists longer than we can do in a given day (or week!) and a constantly changing set of demands and next-actions. Having a timely and effective reminder system is the difference between dropping the ball and getting things done; how exactly that reminder system plays out, however, varied greatly from reader to reader. OJMDC sticks with analog reminders: Sticky notes in the middle of my monitor and in my wallet. I’ve tried my phone apps but I typically disregard them. HTG Explains: Is UPnP a Security Risk? • How do I add Different Screens to my C#/XNA Game?

    - by Ramses Brown
I'm working on a Pong clone in XNA. Gameplay-wise, I have it where I want it to be. I want to add a title screen and some other screens to it like a menu, as well as a screen for the Winning/Losing results. I've tried the Game State Management Example on the App Hub site, but It's very complicated and I haven't been able to make sense of it. Is there a simpler way? I'm hoping for a solution that can be used in other projects too. Plus I'd like to know how to actually create menu items (basically, how do I display the different options on it, and highlight them, etc).

  • Whats New in RadMap for Silverlight / WPF in Q1 2010

Now that the Q1 2010 release has passed I would like to bring to your attention the official release of one of our newest controls - RadMap for Silverlight [and WPF]. Most of you who are actively involved into the business of data visualization solutions probably are aware that with the Q3 2009 release last year we released a public beta (CTP) version of our map control and it naturally evolved into a fully-fledged control for our current official release. First of all – a BIG thanks to all of you early adopters, who gave the control a try and shared constructive feedback (and also lots of kind words ;)) with us and helped this to happen. So in the good tradition of my original overview of the CTP version of RadMap, I would like to highlight some of the most exciting new features that you might have missed in ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to tweak the appearance of desktop icons in Lubuntu?

    - by vasa1
In Ubuntu 11.10 with Nautilus it was possible to tweak the appearance of desktop icons by editing nautilus.css as I had posted in How can I change the text colour on my desktop icons?. In Xubuntu the same can be done by adding a few lines to one's .gtkrc-2.0 as described in How to highlight items on Desktop using xfce?. In both cases, it is possible to assign colors to the various icon states (such as normal, selected and active). My question is this: is it possible to do the same in Lubuntu? PCManFM seems to be responsible but I can't find any GUI or files to edit for the purpose. The default ~/.config/pcmanfm/lubuntu/pcmanfm.conf doesn't have any relevant settings.
