  • Is there a way to get SSL certificate details using JavaScript?

    - by sHz
Hi all, I'd like to gather certain details of an SSL certificate on a particular web-site. I know this is straightforward using the openssl tool on Linux/MacOSX. However is the same or similar possible in JavaScript? I understand that the browser handles socket connections and that the SSL handshake occurs prior to any party sending data. However in an XMLHTTPRequest, I'd like to know if its possible to get these details as some sort of response code etc?

  • Get the coordinates of a drop event in Javascript?

    - by Sebastián Grignoli
I made a javascript library that lets me drag a marker from a dragzone to one or more dropzones. The problem is... the mouseup event happens over the marker I'm dragging, no te dropzone. How can I detect in wich dropzone was the marker dropped, and in wich coordinates? Here's my script: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/186012/demos/dragger/drag.html

  • Where is a good javascript reference for object event handlers?

    - by GregH
I am relatively new to Javascript and constantly need to look up how to handle various events for objects. For example, I have a table containing a few text fields and need to know when somebody starts typing in any of the text boxes. Is there any good concise reference on the web anyplace that documents all of the objects and event handlers associated with all objects? I'd like to be able to look up the object and see all of the events I can handle for that object.

  • best PHP programming approach?

    - by Nazmin
Hello guys, i guess that many of us has acceptable years of experience in PHP programming, me myself got 5 years programming in PHP since in University (not very solid), i just want to gather some suggestion here, what is better approach in PHP OOP? Since there is a lot of PHP framework out there as well as javascript framework, can anyone share their experience in using one of them as well as using both of the PHP and javascript framework together especially for developing enterprise system? (my company want to start using framework, ISP company) if someone has his/her own framework or class or php file so on and so forth, mind to share? now I've only database connection class. I've never use any php framework before, just jquery as javascript framework, my company has a messed up of programming approach because they did not actually a software house, so all the files are scattered across the server, I see that there are some question before about the framework but i just want to know you all approaches on OOP and in developing massive web apps using PHP, or maybe someone kind enough to share their solid written class. Also pro's and con's of all this things. Thanks in advance.

  • How to explain OOP to a matlab programmer?

    - by Oak
I have a lot of friends who come from electrical / physical / mechanical engineering background, and are curious about what is "OOP" all about. They all know Matlab quite well, so they do have basic programming background; but they have a very hard time grasping a complex type system which can benefit from the concepts OOP introduces. Can anyone propose a way I can try to explain it to them? I'm just not familiar with Matlab myself, so I'm having troubles finding parallels. I think using simple examples like shapes or animals is a bit too abstract for those engineers. So far I've tried using a Matrix interface vs array-based / sparse / whatever implementations, but that didn't work so well, probably because different matrix types are already well-supported in Matlab.

  • best way to "introduce" OOP/OOD to team of experienced C++ engineers

    - by DXM
I am looking for an efficient way, that also doesn't come off as an insult, to introduce OOP concepts to existing team members? My teammates are not new to OO languages. We've been doing C++/C# for a long time so technology itself is familiar. However, I look around and without major infusion of effort (mostly in the form of code reviews), it seems what we are producing is C code that happens to be inside classes. There's almost no use of single responsibility principle, abstractions or attempts to minimize coupling, just to name a few. I've seen classes that don't have a constructor but get memset to 0 every time they are instantiated. But every time I bring up OOP, everyone always nods and makes it seem like they know exactly what I'm talking about. Knowing the concepts is good, but we (some more than others) seem to have very hard time applying them when it comes to delivering actual work. Code reviews have been very helpful but the problem with code reviews is that they only occur after the fact so to some it seems we end up rewriting (it's mostly refactoring, but still takes lots of time) code that was just written. Also code reviews only give feedback to an individual engineer, not the entire team. I am toying with the idea of doing a presentation (or a series) and try to bring up OOP again along with some examples of existing code that could've been written better and could be refactored. I could use some really old projects that no one owns anymore so at least that part shouldn't be a sensitive issue. However, will this work? As I said most people have done C++ for a long time so my guess is that a) they'll sit there thinking why I'm telling them stuff they already know or b) they might actually take it as an insult because I'm telling them they don't know how to do the job they've been doing for years if not decades. Is there another approach which would reach broader audience than a code review would, but at the same time wouldn't feel like a punishment lecture? I'm not a fresh kid out of college who has utopian ideals of perfectly designed code and I don't expect that from anyone. The reason I'm writing this is because I just did a review of a person who actually had decent high-level design on paper. However if you picture classes: A - B - C - D, in the code B, C and D all implement almost the same public interface and B/C have one liner functions so that top-most class A is doing absolutely all the work (down to memory management, string parsing, setup negotiations...) primarily in 4 mongo methods and, for all intents and purposes, calls almost directly into D. Update: I'm a tech lead(6 months in this role) and do have full support of the group manager. We are working on a very mature product and maintenance costs are definitely letting themselves be known.

  • PHP OOP: Am i following right way?

    - by sineverba
I'm learning OOP (PHP). I've realized my own CRUD Class, that performs some kind of queries SQL. Btw, a Gasoline asked us to realize a smart, simple web-app where he can update prices of his gasoline (gasoline, diesel, lpg) and via an API i could recall them and display in his site. So, I did create a new Class Gasoline but it perform some methods of CRUD Class public function getPrezzoBenzina($id) { $prezzo_benzina = $this->distributore->sql('SELECT prezzo_benzina FROM prezzi WHERE id = '.$id); return $prezzo_benzina } And so on (code is pseudocode, just to explain). I could perform all my code only with help of Crud Class... without necessity of Class Gasoline. So, what I'm missing about OOP? Where am I wrong?

  • Does FP mess up your OOP skills?

    - by bonomo
I've been learning functional programming in Haskell and F# for awhile and now when I got some skills it gets harder for me to think in OOP way and program in C# and JavaScript. Everything seems to be ass-backwards there with classes, interfaces, objects and I often stare at the screen trying to think of a better way around without using them. This is something that scares me, because I didn't have problems like that before (not knowing that the same stuff can be done in a different way). So I am concerned as I don't want to loose myself as a OOP developer, because this is what I do for living. Is it a normal thing? Shall I rather stop doing FP? How did you manage to cope with it?

  • Is OOP becoming easier or harder?

    - by tunmise fasipe
When the concepts of Object Oriented Programming were introduced to programmers years back it looks interesting and programming was cleaner. OOP was like this Stock stock = new Stock(); stock.addItem(item); stock.removeItem(item); That was easier to understand with self-descriptive name. But now OOP, with pattern like Data Transfer Objects (or Value Objects), Repository, Dependency Injection etc, has become more complex. To achieve the above you may have to create several classes (e.g. abstract, factory, DAO etc) and Implement several interfaces Note: I am not against best practices that makes Collaboration, Testing and Integration easier

  • What's the problem of this piece of JavaScript code?

    - by Yousui
Hi guys, The following piece of JavaScript code is a cross browser way to add/remove event handler. It will save a deleting method as a property of an HTML element object. Now it works well in FireFox but not in IE6. I can't find out why so I came here for help. • JavaScript frameworks and CSS frameworks: JQuery, YUI, neither, or something else?

    - by Eric Johnson
I haven't done web development for about 6 years. I'm trying to get back into it and there is a lot of new stuff out there. I've chosen to write my next project with Perl and Catalyst. I keep hearing about various JavaScript and CSS frameworks. I know very little about these frameworks so maybe this question is overly broad and open ended. What are the strengths, weaknesses, and popularity of the various frameworks? Should I be using YUI, JQuery, neither, or something else?

  • where is the best place to place a javascript snippet to alter the DOM of a page before it renders

    - by icepack
I have a few dynamic pages and I want to alter certain elements before the page has fully rendered. My snippet is something like document.body.getElementById("change").innerHTML = "<img src..."; I do not have access to change the content server side. Where is the best place to put the snippet to have the code run before the page it has rendered? Rather, is putting the javascript in either the HEAD (inside the window.onload event?) or before the closing BODY(not inside an event listener) optimal?

  • Can you use Javascript to detect a file download window created server side?

    - by Zacho
I have a jQuery plugin I use to dynamically create and render a form on a default.aspx asp.net page, then submit it. The page it gets submitted to is a pdf.aspx page. The page builds a PDF then uses Response.Write to write the file (application/pdf) to the browser. I use the same method to render XLSX files to the browser as well. It works really great, but I need a callback or some event to tell the button when to stop spinning. This prevents the user from continuously clicking the Excel or PDF buttons. Does anyone know a way to detect the file dialog window when it was not created using javascript? I am also open to other methods of callback from the server side as well.

  • Javascript onclick event is not working in internet explorer 8.

    - by Mallika Iyer
    Hi, I have the following line of code that works fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari, but not in internet explorer 8. <a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="showHide('reading','type_r','r');">Show me the example</a> The function simply shows and hides a div on clicking the hyperlink. Is there anything I'm missing here? This is the showHide function: function showHide(elementId,parentId,qtype) { if (document.getElementById && !document.all) { var elementParent = document.getElementById(parentId); var element = document.getElementById(elementId); var upArrowId = 'up-arrow-'+qtype; var downArrowId = 'down-arrow-'+qtype; if(element.style.visibility == 'hidden'){ elementParent.style.height = 'auto'; element.style.visibility = 'visible'; document.getElementById(upArrowId).style.visibility = 'visible'; document.getElementById(downArrowId).style.visibility = 'hidden'; } else if(element.style.visibility == 'visible'){ element.style.visibility = 'hidden'; elementParent.style.height = '50px'; document.getElementById(upArrowId).style.visibility = 'hidden'; document.getElementById(downArrowId).style.visibility = 'visible'; } } } Thanks.

  • Why is better to use external JavaScript or libraries ; and is it prefered to use jquery meaning more security?

    - by shareef
I read this article Unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery and I noticed these points in the slide page 11 some companies strip JavaScript at the firewall some run the NoScript Firefox extension to protect themselves from common XSS and CSRF attacks many mobile devices ignore JavaScript entirely screen readers do execute JavaScript but accessibility issues mean you may not want them to I did not understand the fourth point. What does it mean? I need your comment and responses on these points. Is not using JavaScript and switching to libraries like jQuery worth it? UPDATE 1 : whats the meaning of Unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery ? and yes it does not say we should use libraries but we should have them on external files for that reason i asked my question.

  • Where can I learn more about JavaScript and Python?

    - by Tom Maxwell
Been teaching myself how to code over the past four months or so -- mainly in JavaScript, but just started Python -- and had a revelation today. I can write in JavaScript pretty well, but I don't actually know what JavaScript is. Basically I know how to use it, but not the advantages/disadvantages, its origination, its purpose, etc. Where can I learn more about the languages themselves and not just how to write in them?

Because, before OOP, structured programming paradigm is there with C. Don't close it Please, because I need to aware, which paradigm have the ability to withstand in future? Aspect-oriented programming. Declarative programming. Functional programming. Object-oriented programming. Any Others? This describes programming paradigm according to their kernel language.
