• Wireless option grayed out in Windows Mobility Center

  We currently have a Lenovo ThinkPad L512 which can't connect to wireless networks. He simply indicates he can't find any networks. Other notebooks (also ThinkPad L512-notebooks) in the company do find the network so nothings wrong with the configuration of the wireless router. As indicated on answer.microsoft.com, I should check Windows Mobility Center and enable the entry "Turn Wireless On". Unfortunately this option has been grayed out. How can I enable this option? There isn't a physical switch on the laptop to turn on the wireless.

  Here's the situation: We have a large (5,000+ user) organization that is currently using folder redirection to manage the windows desktop icons. This folder is redirected to a network share where we can centrally manage the different sites and such. When a user tries to use a computer when the network is not available, they are unable to use any shortcuts in the Public folder. We only redirect the C:\Users\%username%\Desktop folder. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to go about managing desktop icons? We still want a central location to manage these items, but find a way to keep the system working when the network is unavailable. As a point of clarification, the network rarely goes down. We do have instances where a few computers do not have a network connection. Usually, something is simply unplugged. Since we have multiple sites, the line from a branch to the central office has gone down a few times. This is more of an attempt to maintain a positive end user experience when disconnected from the network.

  Is there a way to display User fields under a form that adds/edits a UserProfile model? I am extending default Django User model like this: class UserProfile(models.Model): user = models.OneToOneField(User, unique=True) about = models.TextField(blank=True) I know that it is possible to make a: class UserProfileInlineAdmin(admin.TabularInline): and then inline this in User ModelAdmin but I want to achieve the opposite effect, something like inverse inlining, displaying the fields of the model pointed by the OneToOne Relationship (User) in the page of the model defining the relationship (UserProfile). I don't care if it would be in the admin or in a custom view/template. I just need to know how to achieve this. I've been struggling with ModelForms and Formsets, I know the answer is somewhere there, but my little experience in Django doesn't allow me to come up with the solution yet. A little example would be really helpful!

• ASP.NET and WIF: Showing custom profile username as User.Identity.Name

  I am building ASP.NET MVC application that uses external services to authenticate users. For ASP.NET users are fully authenticated when they are redirected back from external service. In system they are logically authenticated when they have created user profiles. In this posting I will show you how to force ASP.NET MVC controller actions to demand existence of custom user profiles. Using external authentication sources with AppFabric Suppose you want to be user-friendly and you don’t force users to keep in mind another username/password when they visit your site. You can accept logins from different popular sites like Windows Live, Facebook, Yahoo, Google and many more. If user has account in some of these services then he or she can use his or her account to log in to your site. If you have community site then you usually have support for user profiles too. Some of these providers give you some information about users and other don’t. So only thing in common you get from all those providers is some unique ID that identifies user in service uniquely. Image above shows you how new user joins your site. Existing users who already have profile are directed to users homepage after they are authenticated. The other problem is related to usernames that we don’t get from all identity providers. Why is IIdentity.Name sometimes empty? The problem is described more specifically in my blog posting Identifying AppFabric Access Control Service users uniquely. Shortly the problem is that not all providers have claim called http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2005/05/identity/claims/name. The following diagram illustrates what happens when user got token from AppFabric ACS and was redirected to your site. Now, when user was authenticated using Windows Live ID then we don’t have name claim in token and that’s why User.Identity.Name is empty. Okay, we can force nameidentifier to be used as name (we can do it in web.config file) but we have user profiles and we want username from profile to be shown when username is asked. Modifying name claim Now let’s force IClaimsIdentity to use username from our user profiles. You can read more about my profiles topic from my blog posting ASP.NET MVC: Using ProfileRequiredAttribute to restrict access to pages and you can find some useful extension methods for claims identity from my blog posting Identifying AppFabric Access Control Service users uniquely. Here is what we do to set User.Identity.Name: we will check if user has profile, if user has profile we will check if User.Identity.Name matches the name given by profile, if names does not match then probably identity provider returned some name for user, we will remove name claim and recreate it with correct username, we will add new name claim to claims collection. All this stuff happens in Application_AuthorizeRequest event of our web application.   We've got a website which has been running for a few years now. One of our customers has just started having an intermittent problem. Looking at our iis6.0 logs the service works correctly when they have a user agent beginning "mozilla/4.0+" but fails when the user agent begins "mozilla/5.0+". The particular customer only started having this problem on Wednesday. Does anyone know the browser/upgrade which changes the 4.0 to 5.0? The actual problem caused is that an "&" in a url parameter list is being encoded as "&amp;". Anyone seen anything similar? We have other users sending from browsers with the 5.0+ user agent without trouble. Sorry about the tags but don't have the rep to create new ones. • User unable to delete folder / files "File in use by another user" Server 2003

  I am administering a standalone Windows 2003 Terminal Server with no domain membership. Occasionally (about once a week or so) a user will attempt to delete a sub-folder in a Shared folder and gets denied with "File in use by another user". I tried checking the shared folder snap-in and that folder is not open. She has full control and is the owner of the folder as well. I even checked in "Effective permissions" for some of the folders / files she cant delete and she truly has full control. I am able to delete the folder as Administrator with no problem. Another odd thing, she can delete the files IN the folder most of the time (this issue happens on both folders and files in the share). Sometimes merely waiting a day or two will allow her to delete the folder or files. I am curious as to why she gets the message that it is in use as creator/owner with full control yet I don't get it simply as a member of the Admin group. If anyone out there has any ideas I'd love to hear them! THANK YOU.

• Goldtouch USB Keyboard reverses keystrokes in fast typing -- expected?

  I am running into an odd keyboard problem: some key combinations end up reversed (e.g. "pl" ends up being emitted as "lp") when I'm typing quickly. The problematic ones are the key combos I hit with two adjacent fingers on my right hand-- in other words, the combos I can hit the fastest. No idea how fast is "fastest", but I guess around 50-150 msecs gap between them. I'm trying to track down whether this represents a failed keyboard, an inherent limitation of my Goldtouch USB keyboards, or a software problem on my Windows 7 Lenovo T500. I use a PS/2 version of the same Goldtouch keyboard at home with no problems. I've tried another USB keyboard with my laptop and can't repro the problem. I've also used this keyboard on other laptops without a problem. According to this SU thread, USB keyboards have higher latency than PS/2 keyboards-- up to 30 msecs. I find it hard to imagine that I can type key combos faster than 50 msecs, probably more like 100-150. Anyone encountered this problem with this or another keyboard? If so, how did you fix it? Any idea if there's a "keyboard log" or some way to diagnose the problem inside Windows?

• Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901: Remap orange "My Computer" button

  I have a Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901 (a.k.a. Part No. 57Y6336) that I'm using with an HTPC running Windows 7. The remote comes with an orange button in the top-left corner that by default, when pressed, opens the Windows "My Computer" window. I would like to remap / reprogram this button to act like the green "Windows Media Center" button instead on a Windows Media Center (WMC) remote; that is, open Windows Media Center if it isn't already open, or go to the WMC homepage if WMC is already open. I've tried several keyboard-remapping utilities (as recommended in other, more general "how to remap keyboard key?" SuperUser.com questions) including SharpKeys, Key Mapper, and KeyTweak, with no luck so far. None of these utilities recognize the orange button -- they all do recognize that some key was pressed, but display a value for the key of "unsupported" or something similar. I was able to use a utility called Keyboard Scan Code Generator to determine that a press of the orange button has a KeyData value of 16777217 (0x1000001), and a "Virtual Code" value of 182. (The other "media" buttons on the N5901 have the same KeyData value, but different Virtual Code values). I'm not sure at this point where in Windows this keystroke is being interpreted as a command to open "My Computer." There is no special software / driver for this device; it worked out of the box with Windows 7, no special driver install necessary. Is there any way to accomplish this?   I'm having diffculties configuring 20 new Dell Vostro minis here. I set up one of them with my preferred OS, applications and settings, especially the Visual Effects Settings of Windows XP. I set them to best performance and deactivated everything else in the box. I copied this profile to Default User Profile and did sysprep -mini -reseal. After capturing this image and deploying it again, the desktop settings are correct except the visual effects settings. fading and everything else is reenabled for each new user which is created on the system. How do I preserve my settings from being overwritten by sysprep? thanks!

  I'm running a Lenovo X61 which i carry around my college for getting on the internet at various points in the day. The network has always been finicky but recently it's gotten worse. I'll connect using iwconfig, get an ip from dhcpcd and log in using vpnc to their system. Sometimes I'll stay connected for hours but most of the time within 30 seconds my network traffic will drop to zero and i'll be unable to do anything. My computer still belives it's connected, however to try again i need to put my wireless interface down, put it back up and try again. It's gotten so bad that i've got a window on my computer pinging yahoo or google constantly in order to know if i'm still able to get online. I know other people who have used Arch Linux that don't have the same problems as well as people who use Ubuntu who haven't had any problems either. It seems like my computer is a special case. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? dmesg doesn't show anything out of the ordinary going on and i don't know where else to look for errors or other things to try.

For example, for the following programs: Tomcat Nginx Supervisor PostgreSQL This seems to be recommended based on my reading online. However, I want to restrict these user accounts as much as possible, so that they dont have a shell login, dont have access to the other programs and are as limited as possible but still functional. Would anyone mind telling me how this could be achieved? My reading so far suggests this: echo "/usr/sbin/nologin" >> /etc/shells useradd -s /usr/sbin/nologin tomcat But I think there may be a more complete way of doing it. EDIT: I'm using debian squeeze

• Unable To Successfully Use Java Anywhere (Windows 7 64bit)

  This is a bit of an odd issue: (This is with JRE 7u7 32bit.) New Lenovo W530 laptop, everything is shiny. I tried to use a java applet for the first time recently (in Chrome). I got the Java logo and it started spinning like it was going to load, but didn't get anywhere and the browser locked up. I tried IE. Same deal. Tried Firefox. Same deal. So, I did the usual things: Rebooted, nothing. Un-installed Java, rebooted, re-installed, nothing. Tried it installing a 64bit Java as well. Same thing. I tried JRE6. Same thing. I uninstalled and manually deleted all the registry entries I could find related to it, then re-installed. Same thing. I un-installed and used the JavaRa utility. Same exact thing. I've not been able to use web applets or desktop stuff (minecraft), until yesterday. I did a graphics driver update and I was able to play minecraft for small amounts of time. It crashed regularly and wouldn't start reliably. No change in web applets. I'm at my wits end here. I'm to the point where reformatting is my only option. If anyone has any ideas at all, that would be awesome.

  I just set up a new Debian server. I disabled root SSH and password auth, so you've gotta use a key file. For my primary user, everything works exactly as expected. I used ssh-keygen -t dsa and got myself a public and private key. Put one in authorized keys, put the other in a pem file locally. I wanted to create a user that I can deploy things with, so I did basically the same process. I addusered it, made a .ssh folder, ran ssh-keygen -t dsa (I also tried RSA), put the keys in their appropriate locations. No luck. I'm getting a Permission denied (publickey) error. When I use the exact same keys as the account that works, same error. When I enable password authentication, I can log in via SSH with the password. How do I debug this?

• Windows 8 freezes after every other reboot on Lenovo W520 after about 10 seconds

  I have a Lenovo W520 laptop with i7-2760QM, intel 520 SSD and Nvidia Quadro 1000m. When i boot the PC with discrete graphics SET in BIOS, the computer totally freezes and the only thing left to do is reboot. This only happens with NVidia drivers for Windows 8 x64 installed (I've tried about 4 different drivers on Nvidia's site). When i boot the PC with integrated graphics set in BIOS, there is a momentary "hickup" after about 10 seconds (instead of freezing) and then everything is working fine. When i boot the PC with discrete graphics ON and no Nvidia drivers installed, the same thing happens as described above with integrated graphics. I've tried doing 1) bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes 2) Disabling VT-x in BIOS (Seriously would prefer not to disable it, since i use VM-s almost every day) but no dice. The only thing that worked was to enable the Hyper-v feature. I was then able to boot properly with discrete graphics and Nvidia drivers installed, but since i use VMWare for VM development this was no solution (VMWare complained about not being able to launch because of Hyper-v being installed). I followed the instructions in this tutorial, to be able to run VMWare. Then the computer just booted into a black screen past Windows logo. How to boot Windows 8 x64 without freezing with Quadro 1000M enabled, Nvidia Drivers installed and Hyper-v feature preferably disabled ?

  When installing Windows 7 using WDS, a local user account is used during the set up after the main image of Win7 is installed. And I've got this application that lies on the network and not the deploymentshare itself that I want to install. But logically I get no access to that share via the local user account. Is it possible to do this somehow? Or do I have to move the Share to the Deployment share? Or possibly map the share to a separate drive or something?

  I'm going to re-build a very old Lotus Notes infrastructure coming from 4.x towards 8.5. I'm trying to setup Domino so that all user names should be of a single string or the internet e-mail address. For example the user "John Smith/ACME" should be in the whole system jsmith or [email protected] . I still get jsmith/ACME all around. Where it is most annoying is in the NAB when creating a new message. Is there a way to get all addresses in uniform standard e-mail adress format at least in mail ? The mixup in the destination like "John Smith/ACME, [email protected]" confused the users.

  ATI Radeon HD3650 ffdshow (the one comes with CCCP 2010-10 AND the latest from Free-codecs site) Catalyst 10.12 Latest DirectX, Windows 7 HP x64 If I try to play it simply, the player (mpc-hc) won't use the acceleration. If I disable checks, I get artifacts. Back then it worked perfectly with my Intel and ATI too (Lenovo ThinkPad T500, switchable graphics). This only appeared recently. What should I do? What am I missing? If possible, I don't really want to downgrade drivers (waaa ATI drivers s.ck ... sorry but.. honestly), because the older one got a buggy DP driver so my external display gets a totally wrong resolution. • Turning on Bluetooth disables wifi on Yoga 2

  I have a Lenovo Yoga 2. The moment that I turn on bluetooth, the wifi drops out - I lose connection, and connecting again shows "connection failed". If I turn the bluetooth off, wifi can reestablish fine. I've tried lots of different combinations of drivers for both the wifi and the bluetooth, but no combination has has changed this behavior yet. I've read some speculation that the cards have insufficient shielding, but that seems like kind of a large flaw to ship with. I've tried with a Carbon X1, a Yoga 2 Pro, and a Yoga 2 all next to each other on the desk while running InSSIDer. The X1 and the Y2P don't lose wifi connection when the bluetooth turns on, but the Y2 does immediately. The Y2P and the Y2 are running the same drivers for bluetooth and wifi, and appear to have the same wireless card internally. During the failure state, InSSIDer still sees signal strength for my network, but I cannot connect to it. stats: the card that comes in the laptop is an Intel Wireless-N 7260 Intel Bluetooth driver is at 17.0.1401.422 Intel Wireless driver is at 17.0.2.5 Windows 8.1 x64 Home wifi is a Medialink MWN-WAPR150N
