  It seems like optimization is a lost art these days. Wasn't there a time when all programmers squeezed every ounce of efficiency from their code? Often doing so while walking 5 miles in the snow? In the spirit of bringing back a lost art, what are some tips that you know of for simple (or perhaps complex) changes to optimize C#/.NET code? Since it's such a broad thing that depends on what one is trying to accomplish it'd help to provide context with your tip. For instance: When concatenating many strings together use StringBuilder instead. If you're only concatenating a handful of strings it's ok to use the + operator. Use string.Compare to compare 2 strings instead of doing something like string1.ToLower() == string2.ToLower()

  I've been thinking about using Markov techniques to restore missing information to natural language text. Restore mixed case to text in all caps Restore accents / diacritics to languages which should have them but have been converted to plain ASCII Convert rough phonetic transcriptions back into native alphabets That seems to be in order of least difficult to most difficult. Basically the problem is resolving ambiguities based on context. I can use Wiktionary as a dictionary and Wikipedia as a corpus using n-grams and Markov chains to resolve the ambiguities. Am I on the right track? Are there already some services, libraries, or tools for this sort of thing?   I have an J2EE compliant web application. I use a session based token to append a secondary id to all incoming link generated by my application. To prevent my application against CSRF attack, I validate the secondary id before I allow the user session to work off the subsequent page. Recently, while working with session replication mechanism implementation, I observed that on session failover, the generated secodary id is lost and the user get re directed to the login page/default page. Any suggestions on how I can ensure that the my generated secondary token id is not lost from the replicated session?

  I'm sure this is easy, but I don't work with website development very often and I'm lost on this one. I have a web application that needs to support multiple clients with different settings, icons and other content. The contents of these files are in separate directories for each client. What I would like to do is respond to a request sent to a jsp/java servlet. The servlet will look up the proper folder location in a database (I have the database stuff working) and send the actual object to the requesting page whether it is xml, graphic or video. How do I do that? What methods should I be using. Help I'm lost! :(

  I'm programming a Minesweeper clone in Visual Studio 2010, with VB.NET, as a Windows Form Application, and I'm having trouble with the Game Won and Game Lost forms. When I show those forms, I want the game form to still be visible, so that the player can see where the mines were, but I don't want the game form to be enabled until the Game Won or Game Lost form is closed. Exactly like Windows Minesweeper does when you win or lose. There aren't any obvious properties for this, as far as I can see, and I've had no luck Googling, I don't know what terms to search. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

• Memory leaks getting sub-images from video (cvGetSubRect)

  Hi, i'm trying to do video windowing that is: show all frames from a video and also some sub-image from each frame. This sub-image can change size and be taken from a different position of the original frame. So , the code i've written does basically this: cvQueryFrame to get a new image from the video Create a new IplImage (img) with sub-image dimensions ( window.height,window.width) Create a new Cvmat (mat) with sub-image dimensions ( window.height,window.width) CvGetSubRect(originalImage,mat,window) seizes the sub-image transform Mat (cvMat) to img (IplImage) using cvGetImage my problem is that for each frame i create new IplImage and cvMat which take a lot of memory and when i try to free the allocated memory I get a segmentation fault or in the case of the CvMat the allocated space does not get free (valgrind keeps telling me its definetly lost space). the following code does it: int main(void){ CvCapture* capture; CvRect window; CvMat * tmp; //window size window.x=0;window.y=0;window.height=100;window.width=100; IplImage * src=NULL,*bk=NULL,* sub=NULL; capture=cvCreateFileCapture( "somevideo.wmv"); while((src=cvQueryFrame(capture))!=NULL){ cvShowImage("common",src); //get sub-image sub=cvCreateImage(cvSize(window.height,window.width),8,3); tmp =cvCreateMat(window.height, window.width,CV_8UC1); cvGetSubRect(src, tmp , window); sub=cvGetImage(tmp, sub); cvShowImage("Window",sub); //free space if(bk!=NULL) cvReleaseImage(&bk); bk=sub; cvReleaseMat(&tmp); cvWaitKey(20); //window dimensions changes window.width++; window.height++; } } cvReleaseMat(&tmp); does not seem to have any effect on the total amount of lost memory, valgrind reports the same amount of "definetly lost" memory if i comment or uncomment this line. cvReleaseImage(&bk); produces a segmentation fault. notice i'm trying to free the previous sub-frame which i'm backing up in the bk variable. If i comment this line the program runs smoothly but with lots of memory leaks I really need to get rid of memory leaks, can anyone explain me how to correct this or even better how to correctly perform image windowing? • Generic calls to OnResetDevice() and OnLostDevice()

  This is kind of a COM question to do with DirectX. So, both ID3DXSprite and ID3DXFont and a bunch of the other ID3DX* objects require you to call OnLostDevice() when the d3d device is lost AND OnResetDevice() when the device is reset. What I want to do is maintain an array of all ID3DX* objects and simply call OnResetDevice() and OnLostDevice() on each whenever the device is lost or reset. However I can't seem to find a BASE CLASS for the ID3DX* classes... they all seem to COM-ually inherit from IUnknown. Is there a way to do this or do I have to maintain separate arrays of ID3DXFont* pointers, ID3DXSprite* pointers, etc?

  Hi there! I had one Git repository (A) which contains the development of a project until a certain point. Then I lost the USB stick this repo A was on. Luckily I had a backup of the latest commit, so I could create a new repository (B) later where I imported the latest project's state and continue development. Now I recovered that lost USB stick, so I have two Git repositories. I think I just have to rebase repo B onto repo A somehow, but I have no idea how to do that, maybe using fetch/pull and rebase?   I have the following relationships in JPA (hibernate). Object X has two subclasses, Y and Z. Object A has a manyToOne relationship to object X. (Note, this is a one-sided relationship so object X cannot see object A). Now, I want to get the max value of a column in object A, but only where the relationship is of a specific subtype, ie...Y. So, that equates to...get the max value of column1 in object A, across all instances of A where they have a relationship with Y. Is this possible? I'm a bit lost as how to query it. I was thinking of something like: String query = "SELECT MAX(a.columnName) FROM A a join a.x; Query query = super.entityManager.createQuery(query); query.execute(); However that doesn't take account of the subclass of X...so I'm a bit lost. Any help would be much appreciated.

  Hello, can anyone tell me if you know to be a problem with Bitmap and steganography for WM 6? I am working on a project and i have to hide a digital signature in a bitmap. The algorithm works perfect, as in untill i have the image on the memory the bitmap contains the modified bytes. But after i save the image (Bitmap.Save()) and I reopen the image, than those bytes are lost. When i say lost i mean they are the orriginal bytes from when the picture was taken. Thank you.

  For an web application I am working on I have the following requirements: Clients need to be able to log in via a web brower. After logging in, they will be able to change configurations (normal request/response) will be able to receive alarms sent by the server (a server side push) Now, the question is how to implement the alarms. I first thought of using some long polling approach (Comet), but as the amount of clients will definitely belimited to 5-10, I'm now thinking to go with a simpler approach. What are the options I have? Would it be okay to just let the clients poll the server? Important aspects are: Alarms should be delivered in (nearly) real-time. Alarms must not get lost (a lost alarm could cause harm to real people).

  So due to a recent act of stupidity and bravado, I uttered the words "backups! who needs backups?!" and what followed was the tragic loss of 260gb of data. This scenario in particular is requiring me to recover a repartitioned hard disk, but I was wondering what tools people here use in general to recover lost data. I'm sure everyone has been there, either accidentally rewriting files, resaving an old version, computer crash, hard disk death, user deletes an important document etc. So was thinking it might be an interesting point of discussion as to what you guys use to recover lost data. I appologise if this is considered irrelevant, but considering there has been a few recovery questions, I think this might be interesting.

• twisted .loseConnection does not immediately lose connection?

  I have a server with a few clients connected to it. When CTRL+C is hit (that is, reactor starts shutting down), I want to close all my connections, wait until they are cleanly closed, and then stop. I do this by going through the connected clients' transports and calling .loseConnection(). On the ones that are connected locally, they immediately disconnect. However, on one that is connected through the internet, the connection is not immediately lost. Communication stops - and closing the client program no longer even tells the server that the connection has died, although it does before calling .loseConnection() - but the connection is not deemed 'lost' until a few minutes later after I send a few heartbeat requests from the server. I understand that if a connection dies, there's no way for the server to know unless it tries to send some data. But if I specifically ask for a connection to be closed, why does it not just close/disconnect immediately? Am I calling the wrong function?
