• iPhone transparent images rendering poorly

  I'm developing an iPad application. I have been provided with a PNG image that contains some transparency - basically a drop shadow. The problem I'm having is that this is rendering poorly within the application, both on the device and in the sim. I can't provide the whole image but I've made up some samples to illustrate. The first is how the image appears in the PSD (correctly that is). The second is how it appears on the device. You can see that the strip of shadow in the middle of the image is distinctly more yellow and poorly looking. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

  Hi All, I have a data card, as soon as i insert the data card, i am getting the events by using wm_device_change event. But I also want to get event, when my data connect actually connects to out side world. I mean to say, as soon as we click on connect/disconnect button of data card,i want to get the event. exactly speaking wanted to know, when connection is established and disconnected. data card is vodaphone data card and i am trying to browse using that data card. what ever is the SDK, somewhere the OS should get the event of connection and disconnection to network is there any way to access that event which OS is getting. as i can see in notificaiton the changes of vodaphone connection and LAN connection data card is a USB device having SIM within it, and can be used to access internet through GPRS. can i know how to do this in win32 c/c++ programe. with regards Vinayaka Karjigi

• how do I get the SDK version for an app running on the simulator programmatically?

  I am trying to get the version/build that is running on the simulator via code. Basically I am checking various features of my app using the simulator, and want to switch code paths on and off based on which SDK do I have set as current, instead than doing it by hand every time (my testing machine has different version of the SDK on it and I switch the current for testing purposes between 4.1 and 5.1). So the idea is that when the app launch on the simulator, I can read the build of the SDK and know trough matching (I have a function that does the matching and turn on and off the features) if I should run a specific code path or not. I know how to figure out if I am running on the sim or on a device, but cannot find references about how to get the version of the SDK via code, so I am basically stuck. Is there any function that I can call and that returns me the build or version of the currently installed iOS, while I am running the app on the simulator?

  I have created an Amazon RDS database under the free tier (SQL Server Express, micro instance etc.), but I cannot connect to the server using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. I have configured the security group of the database instance (default) to accept my IP address. I am following the connection guide from amazon located here The error I receive is: Cannot connect to databaseName.c***rnqg***v.us-east-1.rds.amazonaws.com,1433. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060) I am using Server type "Database Engine" and using SQL Server Authentication.

Tommy is nine years old and the Iowa Code Camp was his second time presenting. Scott and Tommy introduce a package called Scratch that was developed by MIT to teach kids about logic and interacting with programming using sprites. Tommy's favorite experience with programming right now is Lego Mindstorms because of the interaction with the Legos and the development. Most adults when they get started with development also got started with interacting more with the physical machines. The next generation is given amazing tools, but the tools tend to be sealed and the physical interaction is not there. With some of these alternative hobby platforms like Legos, Arduino, and .NET Micro Framework, kids can write some amazing application and see their code work with physical movement and interaction with devices and sensors. In the second half of this podcast, Scott talks about how companies can us Gamification to prompt employees to interact with software and processes in the organization. We see gamification throughout the consumer space and you need to do is open up the majority of the apps on our phones or tablets and there is some interaction point to give the user a reward for using the tool. • Wireless not working - HP Probook 4540s

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on 3 HP Probook 4540s's, and none of them seems to be able to connect to wireless networks. I have 1 Probook 4540s with Windows 7 installed and I can access wlan from it. I tried installing the necessary drivers from HP's website, but it still doesn't seem to be working. I've seen other people with different Probooks having similar problems, but their computers seem to be able to detect and even attempt to connect wlans, while mine doesn't even acknowledge that it has wireless. • Migrating from DD-WRT to Tomato

  Is it possible to switch to the latest version of Tomato on a router that's already running DD-WRT? Using the default Linksys firmware on my WRT54GL v1.1, I had to upload a micro version of DD-WRT first. I imagine that, since I'm now running third-party firmware, I won't have to do that again to make the switch, but I thought I should check so as not to brick it. This router is taking a back seat to a new AirPort Extreme (for the 'n' capability), but I still want to have the soon-to-be-Tomato device sit between the AirPort Extreme and my modem for the superior traffic graphing.

• My Ubuntu Touch seems to be broken no matter how many different files I try

  So I'm planning on testing out Ubuntu Touch, and developing some applications for it so I thought I would flash it to my Nexus 4 that was already unlocked, and running Paranoid Android and the kernel associated. I headed to Ubuntu's website, browsed around and came across this page: Touch/Install - Ubuntu Wiki I followed Step 1 perfectly, word by word. Its seems to me that everything on that part is fine. I skipped Step 2 having already done that for Paranoid Android, and then I follow 3 and 4 word to word also. Using the command phablet-flash -b everything seemed to be fine. So it booted up and all seemed normal, but it wasn't. Here are some major bugs that only seem to happen to me. So I was greeted with a normal lock screen: But one of the first noticable things on the home screen is that I only have 4 tabs, not 5: Some of the applications that are supposed to work do not (I know some are dummies) like here with the calculator, this is what I get: On the homescreen it is a black box, it will crash a couple of seconds later: Another annoying problem is that when I want to close apps, I have from right to left, if I close an app on the left first it will close it, but it will open the app to it's right, weird: Yet another bug, this one is in the pull down drawer, when you just click on it, you can see that not all the icons are there: Pretty much everything else works as it should, but my main problem is that there is no telephony, I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I'm never asked a SIM code (I'm guessing you need that?), I can't compose SMS's and can't dial numbers, it won't let me select the 'Send' or 'Call' button. I've after tried manual installs all over the place with these files: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/saucy-preinstalled-armel+mako.zip (Says 44MB on site - 46.6MB on my laptop) http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/saucy-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (Says 366MB on site - 383.2MB on my laptop) There are some weird size differences between what the site told me and what I downloaded, but I've tried re-downloading just to end up with the same file. And it just alway ends up with the same problems. No telephony and those weird bugs. So my question is, how the hell can I get the same version as everyone else, with the ability to send texts and call and open the calculator and more? • Google CDN or Akamai

  We combine and minify our JS with Minify - the combined JS is then cached on Akamai. I'm suggesting to my supervisor that we put JQuery and JQueryUI on Google CDN and take it out of our combined JS. The benefits I see are parallel downloads, significantly smaller Akamai cache hit, and the high potential the user will have JQuery from Google CDN cached in his/her browser when he/she visits our site so no download will be required at all. I also pointed out how pointing to the major version CDN URL //ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js will eliminate the need for us to micro-manage our JQuery version control, and that if a new release introduces a bug, we simply point the CDN URL to a stable minor version of our choice until the issue is resolved. My supervisor disagrees and thinks keeping it on Akamai is the way to go. Any insight as to which is going to be faster here? I looked for some benchmarks and references online but they are either out-dated or merely talk about Google wanting to acquire Akamai. EDIT: Some further research has pointed me to an article mentioning how 'latest version' CDN URL's use short expires headers so it might be more optimal to use /jquery/1.7/. I'm fine with this - the general question still remains.

Because of this, and on general principle, I'd like to have some tools which permit me to do things like: Monitor the amount of bandwidth that I've used I think I can do this from Sprint too, but on-the-computer is nice too on-the-computer gives me a possibility of breaking it down by application See what sort of programs are using the Internet connection I could use, like, Wireshark, but that's a bit too micro-level to be practical Keep those programs, and the operating system, from doing things like "downloading an operating system update" while on the mobile hotspot Related I want to monitor and limit OS X's data transfer while I'm tethering via my iPhone

• Trying to use HUAWEI E173 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a HUAWEI E173 usb stick to access the internet. It works normally on windows but I need to use it on my Ubuntu system. I plug it in, and after 25-20 seconds the status light turns green and blinks twice every 3 seconds. I see no changes in my system whatsoever, nothing gets installed, I don't get prompted for my PIN. I tried to create a connection using edit connections. I entered the following parameters: Turkey, Turkcell, My Plan is not listed, Internet. Nothing happens. • Why Both 8GB USB Flash Drives Have Different Integrities?

  USB 3.0 SuperTalent Express DUO 8GB recently had its partition corrupted and declared itself "write-protected" and I was told in chat by @sidran32 that this usually means that flash drive gone bad due to writing cycles limit being reached. Having this thumbdrive for over a year being used infrequently, I was in doubt and referred to SuperTalent's support. I was given recovery tool which I executed but it failed first time prompting me to reinsert it. After that, I formatted it with Windows 7 integrated format utility since recovery tool offered to do this as well which was successful. The problem as I have noticed is with integrity of SuperTalent: Compare above to SanDisk's Micro Cruzer 8GB: Am I missing something? Both thumbdrives are of 8GB and have same FAT32 file system.

  Tonight the Brisbane Alt.NET group is doing a coding dojo. I am hoping to talk someone into pairing with me to solve the kata in CoffeeScript. CoffeeScript is an awesome language, half javascript, half ruby, that compiles to javascript. • Automatically Snapshoting AWS instances (or other back up strategy)

  I just realized that my aws instance count has risen into the double digits. I'm currently backing portions of my folders and dbs and moving them off to a backup instance. What I think I should be doing is taking a snapshot of the instances (automatically) and persisting them on S3 so I have a running 7 day collection of daily backups. There is a question asking the same thing here, however the answers don't go into depth. So the closest answer seems to be: use a cron job to snapshot the instance. So do I run the cron job on the instance itself? or do I have a micro instance to run these snapshots? Could I get an example script or the command for say a linux flavor? what software must I have installed to get this to run? Thanks.

• How do I keep my Huawei E3131 3G modem from unmounting?

  I need help getting my Huawei E3131 modem to (consistently) work. I am currently running Ubuntu 12.04.2 and 3G dongles have worked many times before. However, my newly acquired Huawei E3131 is causing problems. When plugged in, Ubuntu detects the device as a CD-ROM and a modem. I can browse the dongle's contents using Nautilus and Network Manager is able to configure and work the dongle out-of-the-box. I can even get to surf. However, within minutes, the connection drops and the CD-ROM is unmounted. I wait about 15 seconds, then the CD-ROM mounts again and Network Manager is able to connect again with short-lived surfing. Rinse, lather and repeat. It's strange that the device mounts as a CD-ROM, but works as a modem, too, suggesting that mode switching happens somewhere. It's not a signal coverage problem, either because I tested the same SIM card using 3 other different dongles (2 ZTEs and another Huawei) and it is only this E3131 that has this problem. If pertinent, the other dongles weren't being detected as CD-ROMs. Output of lsusb Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0020 Intel Corp.
