• Technical reasons for not having large background images in websites

  Most websites tend to have either a solid color as background, or a small image that is repeated. Why aren't more websites using a large image (such as a photo) as background? I can think of the following reasons: 1) Problems with different screen resolutions. Too small and gaps start to appear on the left and/or right side for higher resolutions, too big and lower resolutions only show part of the image. 2) Bandwidth. Although this is unlikely to be a problem for most websites. Are there any other reasons why such backgrounds are not being used more often?

• Coping with feelings of technical mediocrity

  As I've progressed as a programmer, I noticed more nuance and areas I could study in depth. In part, I've come to think of myself from, at one point, a "guru" to now much less, even mediocre or inadequate. Is this normal, or is it a sign of a destructive excessive ambition? Background I started to program when I was still a kid, I had about 10 or 11 years. I really enjoy my work and never get bored from it. It's amazing how somebody could be paid for what he really likes to do and would be doing it anyway even for free. When I first started to program, I was feeling proud of what I was doing, each application I built was for me a success and after 2-3 year I had a feeling that I'm a coding guru. It was a nice feeling. ;-) But the more I was in the field and the more types of software I started to develop, I was starting to have a feeling that I'm completely wrong in thinking I'm a guru. I felt that I'm not even a mediocre developer. Each new field I start to work on is giving me this feeling. Like when I once developed a device driver for a client, I saw how much I need to learn about device drivers. When I developed a video filter for an application, I saw how much do I still need to learn about DirectShow, Color Spaces, and all the theory behind that. The worst thing was when I started to learn algorithms. It was several years ago. I knew then the basic structures and algorithms like the sorting, some types of trees, some hashtables, strings, etc. and when I really wanted to learn a group of structures I learned about 5-6 new types and saw that in fact even this small group has several hundred subtypes of structures. It's depressing how little time people have in their lives to learn all this stuff. I'm now a software developer with about 10 years of experience and I still feel that I'm not a proficient developer when I think about things that others do in the industry.

• Cocos2d-iPhone: CCSprite positions differ between Retina & non-Retina Screens

  I have a fairly simple app built using cocos2d-iphone, but a strange positioning problem that I've been unable to resolve. The app uses sprite sheets, and there is a Retina and non-Retina sprite sheet within the app that use the exact same artwork (except for resolution, of course). There are other artwork within the app used for CCSprites that are both standard and -hd suffixed. Within the app, a group of sprites are created when the app starts. These initially created CCSprites always position identically (and correctly) on Retina & non-Retina screens. // In method called to setup sprites when app launches // Cache & setup app sprites [[CCSpriteFrameCache sharedSpriteFrameCache] addSpriteFramesWithFile: @"sprites.plist"]; sprites = [CCSpriteBatchNode batchNodeWithFile: @"sprites.png"]; hill = [CCSprite spriteWithSpriteFrameName: @"hill.png"]; hill.position = ccp( 160, 75 ); [sprites addChild: hill z: 1]; // ... [create more sprites in same fashion] // NOTE: All sprites created here have correct positioning on Retina & non-Retina screens When a user taps the screen a certain way, a method is called that creates another group of CCSprites (on- and off-screen), animating them all in. One of these sprites, hand, is always positioned identically (and correctly) on Retina & non-Retina screens. The others (a group of clouds) successfully create & animate, but their positions are correct only on Retina displays. On a non-Retina display, each cloud has incorrect starting positions (incorrect for x, y, or sometimes both), and their ending positions after animation are also wrong. I've included the responsible code below from the on-touch method that creates the new sprites and animates them in. Again, it works as expected on a Retina display, but incorrectly on non-Retina screens. I have not been able to verify this occurs or does not occur on an actual non-Retina iPhone because I do not have one. However, this is the only time I see this odd positioning behavior occur (the incorrect results obtained after user touch), and since I'm creating all sprites in exactly the same way (i.e., [CCSprite spriteWithSpriteFrameName:] and then setting position with cpp()), I would be especially grateful for any help in tracking down why this single group of sprites are always incorrect on non-Retina screens. But you may create other instances and pass it as optional parameter and if you want to and you can even replace the default instance with a instance from a child class. So it is NO SINGLETON at all but it is used like one singleton in most cases. Anyone got an idea who to call something like this ? Maybe half*** singleton? domiton?

  Is there a common or standard directory name for the company-specific stuff that exists in a server? This would include any crons, scripts, webserver docroots, programs, non-database storage areas, service codebases, etc. We could of course put crons in /etc/cron.d, put docroots in /home/webservd, scripts in one of the bin directories, but that would be messy. If XYZ Technology Corp wanted to have all the non-generic stuff in one place, would they make a directory /xyz or /home/xyz or is there an alternative directory name that is not company-specific, but intended for company-specific stuff? What is most common?

  I came across these two items of non-integer rack unit height: 1. This rack mount kit which seems to be trying to make the best of the slightly-taller-than-1U form factor of the Cisco ASA5505. 2. This 1.5U Server Case that espouses the merits of a case height between 1RU and 2RU. My questions are as follows: A. (1) seems to protrude 1/8 RU above and below the rack unit it is bolted in. Is there any way to make use of the 7/8 RU remaining above and below? Or would using that bracket effectively consume 3 RU? B. Are there any gotchas I should be aware of (like rack rail bolt patterns not working out, etc) when I consider one of these non-integer RU server cases like (2)?

I want to realize a very simple task - rewrite a non-existent php file to another existant php file with all arguments like: this http://example.com/nonexistent.php?url=google.com to -> http://example.com/existent.php?url=google.com I tried something like this: rewrite ^/nonexistent.php /existent.php; Which dont works (File not found). But redirect a non-existent html file to a php file like this: rewrite ^/nonexistent.html /existent.php; works. I dont want to rewrite a html file, but this is still a confusing behaviour. Therefore it tried also something like this (and some variations): rewrite ^/nonexistent.php?url=^(.*)$ /existent.php?url=$1; which is also not working. (Maybe the syntax is bad) Any help here? It would be very nice!

• Windows 2008R2 blocks outbound LDAP for non-admins?

  I've got a Windows 2008R2 terminal server with ~30 users on it. It's joined to a Samba-based domain. During the login script, we connect directly to the LDAP server to pull out certain profile information. This used to work just fine. Now, it doesn't, but only for non-local-admin accounts. Local admins work fine. As a non-local-admin: Connection to ports 389 or 636 just terminate (wireshark on the LDAP server reveals no connection attempt) Connection to other ports on the same server work fine Same thing on multiple LDAP servers Windows firewall is disabled Can't find any other rules/policies that may block this I suspect since this used to work, it came down during an update, but for the life of me, I can't find what. EDIT: I just ran Wireshark on the machine and didn't see anything when connecting to the LDAP server in question (or any LDAP server for that matter). I can, however, see traffic when I connect to that server on another port.

• What Hypervisors support non-homogenous clusters?

  I've been using Citrx Xenserver for awhile on a few machines that don't support Hardware Virtualization as a test for various small servers. I recently have been experimenting with moving the PV Vms between machines but Xenserver gives me errors that roughly say I need to have homogenous hardware for this to work. Because of this I haven't been able to setup XenMotion or any of the nice features that come with server pooling in Xenserver. I'm considering moving away from XenServer, however I can't seem to find a Hypervisor that explicitly supports non-homogenous clusters. On a side note, we do have a few idenitally configured Dell 1950s that haven't had any VM solution setup on yet, so if we can find a solution that can allow us to move PVs to those as well that would be great. Non free solutions are OK as well. What hypervisor will allow this? Thanks!

  I have a computer with non-genuine windows 7 (cracked with windows loader). I was thinking of buying / upgrading to Windows 8 Pro. I ran Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe and was said that I can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Can I perform a clean upgrade (format and install) from my current windows 7 to windows 8? In future, in order to re-install Windows 8 do I need to re-install the non-genuine Windows 7 and install on top of it? If my hard disk crash, or I want to install on a new hard disk (clean install), do I need to install windows 7 again before upgrading to Windows 8? If I don't like Windows 8, can I downgrade to Windows 7 genuine?

As a non admin user, I run Explorer as admin and still can't see the temp internet files for the non admin user. Only if I login as a user that is admin can I see the files. Suppose a single request for a html object that requires to be split in two different HTML response messages. My question is quite simple: do the connection will be closed after the first packet dispatch and then the other one will be sent on a new connection? • In Visio 2010, how can I create a mandatory, non-identifying relationship between two database tables

  I'm working in MS Visio 2010. This is the relevant part of my ERD: The relationship between Event and Adventure is correct: there's a foreign key from Event to Adventure, and that FK is part of Event's primary key. However, what I can't figure out is how to make the relationship line from Adventure to AccomodationType be the same, without making that relationship part of the PK of adventure. When I look at the 'Miscellaneous' properties of that relationship line, I want it to be: Cardinality: Zero or more Relationship type: Non-identifying Child has parent: Not optional (mandatory) But the checkbox for the third property is greyed out, and toggles between True/False as I make the relationship Non-identifying/Identifying. The only way I could figure out was to disconnect the two columns, from the 'Definition' tab, which then un-grey's the 'Optional' checkbox, but then I lose the foreign key property on the accomType column, and while the relationship symbols are correct, the line remains dotted. Any ideas, anyone?

  I was trying to force my domain to redirect without www and could success through this code: .htaccess: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*) http://domain.com/$1 [R=301,L] however, this code is going to redirect all www to non-www, which is not what I want. I just want to make the main domain from www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com and the rest of the urls should be forced to www. any idea how to add or modify the code so I can achieve that through .htaccess ? Update: Thanks to all. I found out that swf file from piecemaker was corrupted and updated it with new one. so now it is all fine and works on both www and non-www. I'm still curious how to solve this issue anyways using .htaccess. Thanks again.

• Using a non-validated SED on a Dell R720

  We were given a Dell R720 a couple years ago, and the machine currently has standard 300GB 3.5" SAS 15k drives. Our RAID controller is a Perc H710. We need to update our disks to FIPS 140-2 certified SED. According to Dell, they have only one tested/validated FIPS SED for this machine/controller, but it is a 7200rpm 3.5" unit. I'm showing that Dell offers a 600GB 15k FIPS SED in 3.5" configuration (Dell part number 342-0605), but they say they haven't validated or tested to know if it works. They informed us that we would not void our warranty in using this non-validated drive. How likely is it that our R720 with H710 controller will work with the non-validated drive? Are there significant differences in how drive manufacturers build SED that would prevent them from working consistently across different controllers?

My past experience with Symantec has been bad, but I've heard good things about this product. However, I've also read that it's kind of a nightmare to setup and administer, and may not be worth it for the size of our network.

  I want to have configurate a GIT repo for a website. Multiple users will have a clone of the repo on their local machine and on the end of each day they push their work to the server. I can setup a bare repo, but I want a working dir/non-bare repository. The idea is that the working dir of the repository will the root folder for the website. At the end of each day all changes will be visible directly. But I can't find a way to do this.   I am trying to get the apache server to issue a custom 404 error for invalid subdomains. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. I don't understand why a URL to non-existent-subdomain.example.com produces a 404 error without custom error as shown above while a URL to eg.example.com/non-existent-file produces the full custom 404 error. Can someone advise on this. Thanks.

• Windows XP - non-user input data filter message after installing wireless keyboard & mouse

  After I installed MS wireless keyboard and mouse and associated software, I started getting this annoying message titled "Hardware installation" telling me the software I am trying to install did not pass the XP logo tests. The software is for "HID non-user input data filter" and I have two options Continue anyway or stop installation. Now, if I try to continue the installation fails, if stop installing another message pops up with a little mouse logo and the whole process repeats itself. after I am done with that message a third dialog appears. This is happening every time I boot up my PC (a desktop), I tried following an advice I found in some forum and download windows update for ID non-user input data filter, but that installation failed as well. The thing is, that both keyboard and mouse are working fine Is there anyway to get past these dialogs ?
