  I have a data frame with a bunch of categorical variables. Some of them contain NA's and I use the addNA function to convert them to an explicit factor level. My problem comes when I try to treat them as NA's they don't seem to register.   Long before you practice writing readable code, what "magic numbers" you still remember up to this day? here's some of my list: 72 80 75 77 13 32 27 - up down left right enter space escape 1 2 4 128 - blue green red blink 67h 33h 17h - interrupt for EMS, mouse, printer function AH 9, interrupt 21 alt+219 for block ASCII alt+164 ñ 90 NOP 13 10 carriage return, line feed ascii 1 and 2 face, ascii 3 heart. no not this heart: <3 :-) debug -o72,10 -o71,12 clears the BIOS password. I don't know what those numbers mean, it's like a trade secret that gets shared with each other during college days. ascii 7 sounds a beep P.S. Somehow, remembering some of these magic numbers can help you in some tech problems, your keyboard is broken, the office pal's keyboard doesn't have accented characters. An anecdote, during college, one of my friend asked me how to remove the newlines in his Word document. Not having used Word so much then, I somehow "intuitively" guessed to find ^013 and replace it with blank. Well it works :-)

• Strange profiling results: definitely non-bottleneck method pops up

  I'm profiling a program using sampling profiling in YourKit and JProfiler, and also "manually" (I launch it and press Ctrl-Break several times to get thread dumps). All three methods give me extremely strange results: some tens of percents of time spent in a 3-line method that does not even do any allocation or synchronization and doesn't have loops etc. Moreover, after I made this method into a NOP and even removed its invocation completely, the observable program performance didn't change at all (although it got a negligible memory leak, since it was a method for freeing a cheap resource). I'm thinking that this might be because of the constraints that JVM puts on the moments at which a thread's stacktrace may be taken, and it somehow turns out that in my program it is exactly the moments where this method is invoked, although there is absolutely nothing special about it or the context in which it is invoked. What can be the explanation for this phenomenon? What are the aforementioned constraints? What further measurements can I take to clarify the situation?

I thought about having a URL like: www.domain.com/p/myproduct/1 But if I could hide the ID it would be better. So, how do I do it the simplest way? • How to debug without Visual Studio?

  Hello, Python - c++ dll - c# dll I have a com interop c# dll that is loaded in a wrapper c++ dll throught the .tlb file generated in c# to be used in a python project. When I run in my computer it works fine but when I run in a computer that just got formated it gives: WindowsError: exception code 0xe0434f4d I have the redistribute c++ installed and the .net compact framework 3.5 on the formatted computer. How can I see what is the correct exception on a computer that does not have visual studio installed? How can I debug all of this? I can't debug the dll's itself can I? Note: in my computer all works well so maybe is some dll or file missing. I allready used Dependency Walker to see if there's some dll missing, and nop!

• How to create art assets for a 3d avatar editor

  I am currently prototyping an idea for an iPhone game. I'd like to create an avatar editor inside the game so that the player can create a 3d avatar face and modify certain features (using slider controls), such as nose shape, eye color, mouth size, etc. This has been done in several games, but what I'm looking to do would be fairly cartoon-ish/caricature-ish, similar to the Mii editor on the Nintendo Wii (http://www.myavatareditor.com/). I'd also like the final result to have the ability to use some canned animations, such as simple speech animations, smiling, frowning, etc. I am not an artist, so I would be unable to create these assets, but what kind of effort is required for an artist to create the 3d models necessary for this type of game? Also what mechanism would be required to tweak the face's characteristics? Would you use bones or morph targets? How would the final result be animated? Would facial animation use bones or morph targets? I've seen several tools that do this sort of thing too, such as FacialStudio.   I've recently acquired a Steelseries Sensei. Despite being a great mouse, I'm having some trouble finding settings that I can get used to... The mouse engine allows me to set a CPI from 0 to 5700. It also allows me to set it even higher, calling it "DCPI" (Double CPI), from 5701 to 11400. On Window's Control Panel, there's a "Pointer Speed" slider and a "Enhance Pointer Precision" checkbox (wording may be different as I use a non-english version). The majority of games allow me to set an in-game "Mouse Sensitivity". Some games let me use a "Raw mouse input". I'm already familiar with the basics of CPI/DPI - "higher CPI means less hand movement", but what are the differences between all those options? Is there a "better" or "worst" setting?

  I am using Windows 7 Media Center with a digital TV tuner. If I am watching live TV and then use the mouse to bring up the control buttons at the bottom of the screen and press the record button once, then a single red circle 'recording' icon appears at the left side of the time slider. If I press the record button a second time, the 'recording' icon changes to a red circle with several shadowed circles fading off to the right. Pressing the record button a third time halts the recording. What is the meaning of the two different 'recording' icons?

  This Excel template is really cool. There are a lot of things in it I don't know how to do, such as: Having header rows that "stick" to the top even when you scroll down Slider on the first page changes where the chart pulls its data from Functions seem to be referring to named ranges in tables, like =SUM([nov]). Where do those names come from? Clicking "back to overview" on the "Budget" page returns you to the "Dashboard" page The number under "starting balance" of the top right corner of "Budget" changes when you change cell C5 On "Budget", each cell in the first column of each table has a drop-down menu for text, which seems to come from the "Setup" page The background isn't just plain white, but when I try to format paint it onto a new sheet, nothing happens If you know how any of these effects are achieved, I'm definitely curious. But I guess the main point of my question is where I can go to answer these questions for myself. Are templates explained anywhere?

• WPF or WinForms for Game Development and learning resources?

  I'm looking to create a game framework for my own personal use... I want to use WPF, but I'm unsure if that is a wise choice... The games I will be writing should not require high performance graphics, so I am hoping to build on native classes... I do not want to rely on external DLL's unless I generate them myself. The games will be for young children, say 4 to 8. Most will be learning puzzles or simple shooters. The most advanced will be a platform game (non-scrolling screen like the old Atari Miner 2049er game). I think I know how to write something like the old Atari Chopper Command (partially written and my 4 year old loves it, but I used WinForms and GDI), Pac-Man, Tetris, Astroids, Space Invaders, Slider Puzzle, but I do not really know how to write the platform game... In my mind, I'm getting caught in collision detection and how to make a character jump and how to make a character walk up a slope or steps... Can anyone point me to information on developing a platform game in C#? Would you suggest WinForms or WPF for game development? I'm not looking for great graphics and speed, just entertaining game play...

  I would like to pick up some really fast USB flash drives in the 16 - 64 GB range. When looking at drives they just list their size, their form factor (key chain hook, slider, etc.) and the fact that they are all Hi-Speed USB 2.0. It seems like I have heard that different drives have different performance and life expectancy. The sales guy tells me that they are all the same performance any more, but it wouldn't be the first time a sales guy had the wrong technical details. Our objective is to run Virtual PC images off of them, so good speed and resilience to rewrites it important.

• Startup/Shutdown time in Xubuntu is increasing!

  I am a novice Xubuntu user on a dual-boot machine. The other OS I have is Windows 7. When I first began using Xubuntu, I had really fast startup and shutdown (much much faster than Windows 7 :) ). However, as I started using it more and more for my work, these times started rising. I do not have any problems with execution speed of running applications. My main concern is the shutdown time. Now it has gone above Windows shutdown time [startup time has only partially increase compared to shutdown]. I checked some similar questions like this. However, they seem to not answer my concern as I feel that the concerned users there experience a long wait before the screen goes blue. In my case, the screen goes blue (desktop session ends a blue screen with a moving slider appears) pretty fast. However, it remains blue for a long time. Another answer that I saw on google was to use dmesg and then stopping some services that I do not want. However, me being a novice could not completely understand what it meant

• Windows calibration settings persistance over reboots

  I'm running Windows 7 64bit on a laptop (Samsung R560) using a cheap external CRT monitor. The screen is a littler dark for my liking, despite having the physical monitors settings up to the max for all the brightness-related settings. Windows 7 has a tool called "Calibrate display color" (search in the start menu). Running this tool, you have a slider that allows you to adjust the "Gamma", which sliding up gives me acceptable brightness levels. Unfortunately, upon reboot (and certain other activities such as running certain fullscreen games) this is reset to default. Is there a way to make this persistent? Some registry setting? Batch file to run at startup even (less preferable as I'd like games to run brighter too)?

  I purchased a PowerColor HD 5770 video card so I could get a third monitor working. I have two widescreen monitors, one attached via HDMI and the other attached via DVI. My third monitor is attached from DisplayPort to VGA (using a passive connector like this one) The third monitor is a 19" Hyundai L90D. I was unable to find any Windows 7 (or Vista for that matter) drivers for the monitor, so it's stuck with "Generic Non-PNP Monitor". It's native resolution is 1280 x 1024. Randomly Windows will boot up in the correct native res, but sometimes it boots up in 640 x 480 res. When it does boot up into 640 x 480 res, the screen resolution slider is stuck and I cannot slide it back to 1280 x 1024. I cannot find a pattern for when or why it will do this, I've tried rebooting five or six times in a row at times to get it to boot into native res, but this doesn't always work.

The featured images of the categories can be changed manually from someone. I did a check and it is asking me to give alt text. I did it to some images with alt="". • Make the sound louder in Lubuntu

  I have a Toshiba r835 running Lubuntu 11.10. Turning the volume slider up all the way doesn't give very loud sound. I've tried typing alsamixer in a terminal and turning up all the levels there to maximum, but the speakers are still fairly quiet. Is there a simple way to increase maximum volume in software? I understand that there are physical limits to the sound the laptop's speakers can produce, but I suspect my maximum volume is limited by software. EDIT: This is exactly the type of solution I'm looking for. However, it doesn't work for me. What I did: sudo pico /etc/asound.conf This file does not exist, so I create a new one, containing: pcm.!default { type plug slave.pcm "softvol" } pcm.softvol { type softvol slave { pcm "dmix" } control { name "Pre-Amp" card 0 } min_dB -5.0 max_dB 20.0 resolution 6 } I reboot the machine, and type alsamixer. I use my left/right arrow keys to inspect the various volume options. I expect to see a new option, called Pre-Amp, but I don't see one. This fix seems to work for other people. Why doesn't this fix work for me?
