  • Why is this MySQL FULLTEXT query returning 0 rows when matching rows are present?

    - by Don MacAskill
    I have a MySQL table with 200M rows which has a FULLTEXT index on two columns (Title,Body). When I do a simple FULLTEXT query in the default NATURAL LANGUAGE mode for some popular results (they'd return 2M+ rows), I'm getting zero rows back: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM itemsearch WHERE MATCH (Title, Body) AGAINST ('fubar'); But when I do a FULLTEXT query in BOOLEAN mode, I can see the rows in question do exist (I get 2M+ back, depending): SELECT COUNT(*) FROM itemsearch WHERE MATCH (Title, Body) AGAINST ('+fubar' IN BOOLEAN MODE); I have some queries which return ~500K rows which are working fine in either mode, so if it's result size related, it seems to crop up somewhere between 500K and a little north of 2M. I've tried playing with the various buffer size variables, to no avail. It's clearly not the 50% threshold, since we're not getting 100M rows back for any result. Any ideas?

  • Unix: sleep until the specified time

    - by aix
    Is there a (semi-)standard Unix command that would sleep until the time specified on its command line? In other words, I am looking for something similar to sleep that would take wakeup time rather than duration. For example: sleeptill 05:00:00 I can code something up but would rather not re-invent the wheel if there's already something out there. Bonus question: it would be great if it could take the timezone (as in sleeptill 05:00:00 America/New_York). edit Due to the nature of what I am doing, I am looking for a "sleep until T" rather than "run command at T" solution. edit For the avoidance of doubt, if I run the command at 18:00 and tell it to wake up at 17:00, I expect it to sleep for 23 hours (or, in some corner cases having to do with daylight savings time, for 22 or 24 hours.)

  • It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

    - by Oracle OpenWorld Blog Team
    Oracle OpenWorld 2012 is behind us. Well, for San Francisco, anyhow. The team is already working on the Latin America event which takes place in December in Sao Paulo, and an OpenWorld in Asia for 2013 as well. And of course they're already working on the next San Francisco OpenWorld for 2013. So what happens after the conference is over? People pack up demo and network gear and ship it out to wherever it's going next; take down and recycle signage; strike the keynote set, the exhibition and demo halls, the street tents, and anything else that was constructed just for the conference. There's a lot of post-conference analyis going on too. Oracle and partner marketing teams are looking at and following up on the leads they got from booth, demo, and lounge traffic. The events team is evaluating the session and conference surveys you filled out if you attended -- looking to identify the best speakers, what worked and didn't work, how you liked the venues, the food, the entertainment, the presentations. From all of that information will come recommendations for next year on what to keep doing, what to do better, and what not to do at all. The goal for each year's conference is to be better than last year's. If you attended and haven't filled out the surveys yet, you have until October 19 for them to be counted, and for you to be entered into a daily sweepstakes. Click here for more information. Posts to this blog will slow down for a while, but we'll post news about Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco and around the world when we have it. Any suggestions about future blog topics are welcome. Oh - I forgot to mention that you can sign up to be notified when registration for Oracle OpenWorld 2013 goes live. If you register at that time you'll get the best discount available on attending next year. So sign up, and stay tuned.

  • Hosting company that does Linux VPS and MS SQL

    - by danielmcq
    I'm looking for hosted solutions but there are so many companies that finding the right one using a Google search is a bit overwhelming. Ideally I would like a hosting company which has following options: -Linux VPSs - Individual VPSs should be fairly cheap since I plan on putting one or two services per VPS i.e web server on one (httpd and ColdFusion), an SVN server on another, etc. -Managed MS SQL databases - My company already has data in MS SQL databases and a lot of ColdFusion code written that has MS SQL specific commands in it. -Individually purchased dedicated IP addresses -Preferably located in the North America region My plan would be to setup one Linux VPS as a gateway/firewall/VPN server and have all of my traffic routed through so that my other servers would not use of bandwidth by talking to each other. The trick is also finding a company that does Linux VPS AND MS SQL databases. Does anybody know of any hosting companies offer what I'm looking for? Let me know if I need to add more details.

  • Network(ing) to the Limit

    - by Oracle OpenWorld Blog Team
     By Karen Shamban While Oracle OpenWorld attendees are networking, there's an Oracle Global IT team that builds and maintains the massive networks that help run the show. The objective? To keep things running as seamlessly and smoothly as possible, constantly evaluate priorities, mitigate risk, and be ready for whatever might happen -- because things do happen when there are 50,000 plus attendees, tens of thousands of devices, unexpected requirements, and a constant flow of up-to-the-minute information. Here's just some of what it takes to keep the conference going, network style: 100 Oracle network, voice, and desktop engineers; security, risk management, and other IT experts, who come in from 17 countries  1000+ network switches 300+ miles of copper and fiber 485 wireless access points 2,500 wired laptops 300 VoIP phones And just where are all these networks and devices deployed? This is what the team had to build and manage: Moscone North, South, and West, including: The keynote hall Oracle DEMOgrounds in the Exhibition Halls Hundreds of session rooms Connection Centers, Social Avenue, Lounges Registration The Howard Street Tent and Taylor Street Cafe tented venues Oracle Square (Union Square) Yerba Buena Gardens Masonic Auditorium Sessions and demos at 8 hotel venues That's a whole lot of networking going on. And here's the kicker: the team has only 4 days to bring get it all up and running across these many venues, and exactly 12 hours to take it all down once the show ends. The Global IT team puts in the equivalent of 152 24-hour days for set-up, 227 24-hour days of support during the conferences, and then tears it all down in about 20 24-hour days. And in case you were wondering, the planning for next year's Oracle OpenWorld starts ... next week. No rest for the weary.  Now THAT's networking!  So hats off to the Global IT team -- the job ain't easy, but somebody's got to do it, and they do it remarkably well.

Seems very stable and not having unusual heat problems. Do you think it is safe to use this adapter without harming my laptop?

  • Creating a Comment Anchor

    - by John
    Hello, The function below allows a user to insert a comment into a MySQL table called "comment." Then, the file "comments2.php" displays all comments for a given submission. Right after a user submits a comment, I would like the top of the user's browser to be anchored by the comment the user just submitted. How can I do this? Thanks in advance, John The function: function show_commentbox($submissionid, $submission, $url, $submittor, $submissiondate, $countcomments, $dispurl) { echo '<form action="http://www...com/.../comments/comments2.php" method="post"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$_SESSION['loginid'].'" name="uid"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submissionid.'" name="submissionid"> <input type="hidden" value="'.stripslashes($submission).'" name="submission"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$url.'" name="url"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submittor.'" name="submittor"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$submissiondate.'" name="submissiondate"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$countcomments.'" name="countcomments"> <input type="hidden" value="'.$dispurl.'" name="dispurl"> <label class="addacomment" for="title">Add a comment:</label> <textarea class="checkMax" name="comment" type="comment" id="comment" maxlength="1000"></textarea> <div class="commentsubbutton"><input name="submit" type="submit" value="Submit"></div> </form> '; } The file comments2.php contains: $query = sprintf("INSERT INTO comment VALUES (NULL, %d, %d, '%s', NULL)", $uid, $subid, $comment); mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error()); $submissionid = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['submissionid']); $submissionid = mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['submissionid']); $sqlStr = "SELECT comment.comment, comment.datecommented, login.username FROM comment LEFT JOIN login ON comment.loginid=login.loginid WHERE submissionid=$submissionid ORDER BY comment.datecommented ASC LIMIT 100"; $tzFrom1 = new DateTimeZone('America/New_York'); $tzTo1 = new DateTimeZone('America/Phoenix'); $result = mysql_query($sqlStr); $arr = array(); echo "<table class=\"commentecho\">"; $count = 1; while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $dt1 = new DateTime($row["datecommented"], $tzFrom1); $dt1->setTimezone($tzTo1); echo '<tr>'; echo '<td rowspan="3" class="commentnamecount">'.$count++.'.</td>'; echo '<td class="commentname2"><a href="http://www...com/.../members/index.php?profile='.$row["username"].'">'.$row["username"].'</a></td>'; echo '<td rowspan="3" class="commentname1">'.stripslashes($row["comment"]).'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="commentname2">'.$dt1->format('F j, Y').'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; echo '<tr>'; echo '<td class="commentname2a">'.$dt1->format('g:i a').'</td>'; echo '</tr>'; } echo "</table>"; The fields in the MySQL table "comment": commentid loginid submissionid comment datecommented

  • Does anyone know how to appropriately deal with user timezones in rails 2.3?

    - by Amazing Jay
    We're building a rails app that needs to display dates (and more importantly, calculate them) in multiple timezones. Can anyone point me towards how to work with user timezones in rails 2.3(.5 or .8) The most inclusive article I've seen detailing how user time zones are supposed to work is here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/howtos/time-zones... although it is unclear when this was written or for what version of rails. Specifically it states that: "Time.zone - The time zone that is actually used for display purposes. This may be set manually to override config.time_zone on a per-request basis." Keys terms being "display purposes" and "per-request basis". Locally on my machine, this is true. However on production, neither are true. Setting Time.zone persists past the end of the request (to all subsequent requests) and also affects the way AR saves to the DB (basically treating any date as if it were already in UTC even when its not), thus saving completely inappropriate values. We run Ruby Enterprise Edition on production with passenger. If this is my problem, do we need to switch to JRuby or something else? To illustrate the problem I put the following actions in my ApplicationController right now: def test p_time = Time.now.utc s_time = Time.utc(p_time.year, p_time.month, p_time.day, p_time.hour) logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect logger.error p_time.inspect logger.error s_time.inspect jl = JunkLead.create! jl.date_at = s_time logger.error s_time.inspect logger.error jl.date_at.inspect jl.save! logger.error s_time.inspect logger.error jl.date_at.inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end def test2 Time.zone = 'Mountain Time (US & Canada)' logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end def test3 Time.zone = 'UTC' logger.error "TIME.ZONE" + Time.zone.inspect logger.error ENV['TZ'].inspect render :nothing => true, :status => 200 end and they yield the following: Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:50) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Fri Dec 24 22:15:50 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Completed in 21ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] Processing ApplicationController#test2 (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:53) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c580a8 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: America/Denver>, @name="Mountain Time (US & Canada)", @utc_offset=-25200> nil Completed in 143ms (View: 1, DB: 3) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test2] Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:15:59) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c580a8 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: America/Denver>, @name="Mountain Time (US & Canada)", @utc_offset=-25200> nil Fri Dec 24 22:15:59 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 15:00:00 MST -07:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 15:00:00 MST -07:00 Completed in 20ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] Processing ApplicationController#test3 (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:16:03) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Completed in 17ms (View: 0, DB: 2) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test3] Processing ApplicationController#test (for 98.202.196.203 at 2010-12-24 22:16:04) [GET] TIME.ZONE#<ActiveSupport::TimeZone:0x2c57a68 @tzinfo=#<TZInfo::DataTimezone: Etc/UTC>, @name="UTC", @utc_offset=0> nil Fri Dec 24 22:16:05 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Fri Dec 24 22:00:00 UTC 2010 Fri, 24 Dec 2010 22:00:00 UTC +00:00 Completed in 151ms (View: 0, DB: 4) | 200 OK [http://www.dealsthatmatter.com/test] It should be clear above that the 2nd call to /test shows Time.zone set to Mountain, even though it shouldn't. • Is Fast Enumeration messing with my text output?

    - by Dan Ray
    Here I am iterating through an array of NSDictionary objects (inside the parsed JSON response of the EXCELLENT MapQuest directions API). I want to build up an HTML string to put into a UIWebView. My code says: for (NSDictionary *leg in legs ) { NSString *thisLeg = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"<br>%@ - %@", [leg valueForKey:@"narrative"], [leg valueForKey:@"distance"]]; NSLog(@"This leg's string is %@", thisLeg); [directionsOutput appendString:thisLeg]; } The content of directionsOutput (which is an NSMutableString) contains ALL the values for [leg valueForKey:@"narrative"], wrapped up in parens, followed by a hyphen, followed by all the parenthesized values for [leg valueForKey:@"distance"]. So I put in that NSLog call... and I get the same thing there! It appears that the for() is somehow batching up our output values as we iterate, and putting out the output only once. How do I make it not do this but instead do what I actually want, which is an iterative output as I iterate? Here's what NSLog gets. Yes, I know I need to figure out NSNumberFormatter. ;-) This leg's string is ( "Start out going NORTH on INFINITE LOOP.", "Turn LEFT to stay on INFINITE LOOP.", "Turn RIGHT onto N DE ANZA BLVD.", "Merge onto I-280 S toward SAN JOSE.", "Merge onto CA-87 S via EXIT 3A.", "Take the exit on the LEFT.", "Merge onto CA-85 S via EXIT 1A on the LEFT toward GILROY.", "Merge onto US-101 S via EXIT 1A on the LEFT toward LOS ANGELES.", "Take the CA-152 E/10TH ST exit, EXIT 356.", "Turn LEFT onto CA-152/E 10TH ST/PACHECO PASS HWY. The xml looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no" ?> <States> <State> <Code>CA</Code> <Name>California</Name> </State> <State> <Code>NC</Code> <Name>North Carolina</Name> </State> <State> <Code>SC</Code> <Name>South Carolina</Name> </State> The autocomplete code looks like this: $('.autocompleteTest').autocomplete( { source: function(request, response) { var list = []; $.ajax({ url: "http://commonservices.qa.kirkland.com/StateLookup.ashx", dataType: "xml", async: false, data: request, success: function(xmlResponse) { list = $("State", xmlResponse).map(function() { return { value: $("Code", this).text(), label: $("Name", this).text() }; }).get(); } }); response(list); }, focus: function(event, ui) { $('.autocompleteTest').val(ui.item.label); return false; }, select: function(event, ui) { $('.autocompleteTest').val(ui.item.label); $('.autocompleteValue').val(ui.item.value); return false; } }); For various reasons, I'd rather be calling an ASP.NET web service, but I can't get it to work. To change over to the service (I'm doing a local service to keep it simple), the start of the autocomplete code is: $('.autocompleteTest').autocomplete( { source: function(request, response) { var list = []; $.ajax({ url: "/Services/GeneralLookup.asmx/StateList", dataType: "xml", This code is on a page at the root of the site and the GeneralLookup.asmx is in a subfolder named Services. But a breakpoint in the web service never gets hit, and no autocomplete list is generated. In case it makes a difference, the XML that comes from the asmx is: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <string xmlns="http://www.kirkland.com/"><State> <Code>CA</Code> <Name>California</Name> </State> <State> <Code>NC</Code> <Name>North Carolina</Name> </State> <State> <Code>SC</Code> <Name>South Carolina</Name> </State></string> Functionally equivalent since I never use the name of the root node in the mapping code. I haven't seen anything in the jQuery docs about calling a .asmx service from this control, but a .ajax call is a .ajax call, right? I've tried various different paths to the .asmx (~/Services/), and I've even moved the service to be in the same path to eliminate these issues. No luck with either. Any ideas?

  • NSUserDefaults loses 3 rows each time it's called

    - by Jeff Decker
    Hello Everyone! Brand new programmer here, so off-topic help/constructive criticism welcome. I am saving a default state (such as "New York") in a UIPickerView which is in a FlipSideView. It certainly saves for the first and second time I check to make sure it's the same state (I am clicking "done" and then "info" repeatedly), but on the third check the picker has moved up three states (to "New Hampshire") and then every time I check the picker progresses three more states. Here's the .h and .m files of the FlipSideViewController: #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> import "Calculator.h" @protocol FlipsideViewControllerDelegate; @interface FlipsideViewController : UIViewController { id delegate; UIPickerView *myPickerView; NSArray *pickerViewArray; } @property (nonatomic, assign) id delegate; @property (nonatomic, retain) UIPickerView *myPickerView; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *pickerViewArray; (IBAction)done; @end @protocol FlipsideViewControllerDelegate - (void)flipsideViewControllerDidFinish:(FlipsideViewController *)controller; @end import "FlipsideViewController.h" @implementation FlipsideViewController @synthesize delegate; @synthesize myPickerView, pickerViewArray; -(CGRect)pickerFrameWithSize:(CGSize)size;{ CGRect screenRect = [[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame]; CGRect pickerRect = CGRectMake( 0.0, screenRect.size.height - size.height, size.width, size.height); return pickerRect; } (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor viewFlipsideBackgroundColor]; [self createPicker]; } -(void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated;{ [super viewWillAppear:NO]; NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [myPickerView selectRow:[defaults integerForKey:@"pickerRow"] inComponent:0 animated:NO]; } -(void)createPicker;{ pickerViewArray = [[NSArray arrayWithObjects: @"Alabama",@"Alaska", @"Arizona",@"Arkansas",@"California",@"Colorado",@"Connecticut",@"Delaware", @"District of Columbia",@"Florida",@"Georgia",@"Hawaii",@"Idaho",@"Illinois",@"Indiana",@"Iowa", @"Kansas",@"Kentucky",@"Louisiana",@"Maine",@"Maryland",@"Massachusetts",@"Michigan", @"Minnesota",@"Mississippi",@"Missouri",@"Montana",@"Nebraska",@"Nevada",@"New Hampshire",@"New Jersey", @"New Mexico",@"New York",@"North Carolina",@"North Dakota",@"Ohio",@"Oklahoma", @"Oregon",@"Pennsylvania",@"Rhode Island",@"South Carolina",@"South Dakota",@"Tennessee", @"Texas",@"Utah",@"Vermont",@"Virginia",@"Washington",@"West Virginia",@"Wisconsin",@"Wyoming", nil] retain]; myPickerView = [[UIPickerView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectZero]; CGSize pickerSize = [myPickerView sizeThatFits:CGSizeZero]; myPickerView.frame = [self pickerFrameWithSize:pickerSize]; myPickerView.autoresizingMask = UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleWidth; myPickerView.showsSelectionIndicator = YES; myPickerView.delegate = self; myPickerView.dataSource = self; [self.view addSubview:myPickerView]; } (IBAction)done { [self.delegate flipsideViewControllerDidFinish:self]; } pragma mark - pragma mark UIPickerViewDataSource (NSString *)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView titleForRow:(NSInteger)row forComponent:(NSInteger)component { NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [defaults setInteger:row forKey:@"pickerRow"]; [defaults setObject:[pickerViewArray objectAtIndex:row] forKey:@"pickerString"]; return [pickerViewArray objectAtIndex:row]; } (void)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView didSelectRow:(NSInteger)row inComponent:(NSInteger)component { NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; [defaults setInteger:row forKey:@"pickerRow"]; [defaults setObject:[pickerViewArray objectAtIndex:row] forKey:@"pickerString"]; } (CGFloat)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView widthForComponent:(NSInteger)component { return 240.0; } (CGFloat)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView rowHeightForComponent:(NSInteger)component { return 40.0; } (NSInteger)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView numberOfRowsInComponent:(NSInteger)component { return [pickerViewArray count]; } (NSInteger)numberOfComponentsInPickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView { return 1; } call me mystified! Thanks for any help. Please let me know if I can make myself more clear...

  • All parts of my Printable Swing component doesn't print

    - by Jonas
    I'm trying to do a printable component (an invoice document). I use JComponent instead of JPanel because I don't want a background. The component has many subcomponents. The main component implements Printable and has a print-method that is calling printAll(g) so that all subcomponents should be printed. But my subcomponents doesn't print. What am I missing? Does all subcomponents also has to implement Printable? import java.awt.BorderLayout; import java.awt.Dimension; import java.awt.Graphics; import java.awt.Graphics2D; import java.awt.GridLayout; import java.awt.print.PageFormat; import java.awt.print.Printable; import java.awt.print.PrinterException; import java.awt.print.PrinterJob; import javax.swing.JComponent; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JLabel; import javax.swing.JPanel; import javax.swing.JTextField; public class PPanel extends JComponent implements Printable { static double w; static double h; public PPanel() { this.setLayout(new BorderLayout()); this.add(new JLabel("Document Body"), BorderLayout.CENTER); this.add(new Header(), BorderLayout.NORTH); this.add(new Footer(), BorderLayout.SOUTH); } class Header extends JComponent { public Header() { this.setLayout(new BorderLayout()); this.add(new TopHeader(), BorderLayout.NORTH); this.add(new LowHeader(), BorderLayout.SOUTH); } } class TopHeader extends JComponent { public TopHeader() { this.setLayout(new BorderLayout()); JLabel companyName = new JLabel("Company name"); JLabel docType = new JLabel("Document type"); this.add(companyName, BorderLayout.WEST); this.add(docType, BorderLayout.EAST); } } class LowHeader extends JComponent { public LowHeader() { this.setLayout(new GridLayout(0,2)); JLabel col1 = new JLabel("Column 1"); JLabel col2 = new JLabel("Column 2"); this.add(col1); this.add(col2); } } class Footer extends JComponent { public Footer() { this.setLayout(new GridLayout(0,2)); JLabel addr = new JLabel("Address"); JLabel sum = new JLabel("Sum"); this.add(addr); this.add(sum); } } public static void main(String[] args) { final PPanel p = new PPanel(); PrinterJob job = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob(); job.setPrintable(p); try { job.print(); } catch (PrinterException ex) { // print failed } // Preview new JFrame() {{ getContentPane().add(p); this.setSize((int)w, (int)h); setVisible(true); }}; } @Override public int print(Graphics g, PageFormat pf, int page) throws PrinterException { if (page > 0) { return NO_SUCH_PAGE; } Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g; g2d.translate(pf.getImageableX(), pf.getImageableY()); w = pf.getImageableWidth(); h = pf.getHeight(); this.setSize((int)w, (int)h); this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension((int)w, (int)h)); this.doLayout(); this.printAll(g); return PAGE_EXISTS; } }

  • Parsing Concerns

    - by Jesse
    If you’ve ever written an application that accepts date and/or time inputs from an external source (a person, an uploaded file, posted XML, etc.) then you’ve no doubt had to deal with parsing some text representing a date into a data structure that a computer can understand. Similarly, you’ve probably also had to take values from those same data structure and turn them back into their original formats. Most (all?) suitably modern development platforms expose some kind of parsing and formatting functionality for turning text into dates and vice versa. In .NET, the DateTime data structure exposes ‘Parse’ and ‘ToString’ methods for this purpose. This post will focus mostly on parsing, though most of the examples and suggestions below can also be applied to the ToString method. The DateTime.Parse method is pretty permissive in the values that it will accept (though apparently not as permissive as some other languages) which makes it pretty easy to take some text provided by a user and turn it into a proper DateTime instance. Here are some examples (note that the resulting DateTime values are shown using the RFC1123 format): DateTime.Parse("3/12/2010"); //Fri, 12 Mar 2010 00:00:00 GMT DateTime.Parse("2:00 AM"); //Sat, 01 Jan 2011 02:00:00 GMT (took today's date as date portion) DateTime.Parse("5-15/2010"); //Sat, 15 May 2010 00:00:00 GMT DateTime.Parse("7/8"); //Fri, 08 Jul 2011 00:00:00 GMT DateTime.Parse("Thursday, July 1, 2010"); //Thu, 01 Jul 2010 00:00:00 GMT Dealing With Inaccuracy While the DateTime struct has the ability to store a date and time value accurate down to the millisecond, most date strings provided by a user are not going to specify values with that much precision. In each of the above examples, the Parse method was provided a partial value from which to construct a proper DateTime. This means it had to go ahead and assume what you meant and fill in the missing parts of the date and time for you. This is a good thing, especially when we’re talking about taking input from a user. We can’t expect that every person using our software to provide a year, day, month, hour, minute, second, and millisecond every time they need to express a date. That said, it’s important for developers to understand what assumptions the software might be making and plan accordingly. I think the assumptions that were made in each of the above examples were pretty reasonable, though if we dig into this method a little bit deeper we’ll find that there are a lot more assumptions being made under the covers than you might have previously known. One of the biggest assumptions that the DateTime.Parse method has to make relates to the format of the date represented by the provided string. Let’s consider this example input string: ‘10-02-15’. To some people. that might look like ‘15-Feb-2010’. To others, it might be ‘02-Oct-2015’. Like many things, it depends on where you’re from. This Is America! Most cultures around the world have adopted a “little-endian” or “big-endian” formats. (Source: Date And Time Notation By Country) In this context,  a “little-endian” date format would list the date parts with the least significant first while the “big-endian” date format would list them with the most significant first. For example, a “little-endian” date would be “day-month-year” and “big-endian” would be “year-month-day”. It’s worth nothing here that ISO 8601 defines a “big-endian” format as the international standard. While I personally prefer “big-endian” style date formats, I think both styles make sense in that they follow some logical standard with respect to ordering the date parts by their significance. Here in the United States, however, we buck that trend by using what is, in comparison, a completely nonsensical format of “month/day/year”. Almost no other country in the world uses this format. I’ve been fortunate in my life to have done some international travel, so I’ve been aware of this difference for many years, but never really thought much about it. Until recently, I had been developing software for exclusively US-based audiences and remained blissfully ignorant of the different date formats employed by other countries around the world. The web application I work on is being rolled out to users in different countries, so I was recently tasked with updating it to support different date formats. As it turns out, .NET has a great mechanism for dealing with different date formats right out of the box. Supporting date formats for different cultures is actually pretty easy once you understand this mechanism. Pulling the Curtain Back On the Parse Method Have you ever taken a look at the different flavors (read: overloads) that the DateTime.Parse method comes in? In it’s simplest form, it takes a single string parameter and returns the corresponding DateTime value (if it can divine what the date value should be). You can optionally provide two additional parameters to this method: an ‘System.IFormatProvider’ and a ‘System.Globalization.DateTimeStyles’. Both of these optional parameters have some bearing on the assumptions that get made while parsing a date, but for the purposes of this article I’m going to focus on the ‘System.IFormatProvider’ parameter. The IFormatProvider exposes a single method called ‘GetFormat’ that returns an object to be used for determining the proper format for displaying and parsing things like numbers and dates. This interface plays a big role in the globalization capabilities that are built into the .NET Framework. The cornerstone of these globalization capabilities can be found in the ‘System.Globalization.CultureInfo’ class. To put it simply, the CultureInfo class is used to encapsulate information related to things like language, writing system, and date formats for a certain culture. Support for many cultures are “baked in” to the .NET Framework and there is capacity for defining custom cultures if needed (thought I’ve never delved into that). While the details of the CultureInfo class are beyond the scope of this post, so for now let me just point out that the CultureInfo class implements the IFormatInfo interface. This means that a CultureInfo instance created for a given culture can be provided to the DateTime.Parse method in order to tell it what date formats it should expect. So what happens when you don’t provide this value? Let’s crack this method open in Reflector: When no IFormatInfo parameter is provided (i.e. we use the simple DateTime.Parse(string) overload), the ‘DateTimeFormatInfo.CurrentInfo’ is used instead. Drilling down a bit further we can see the implementation of the DateTimeFormatInfo.CurrentInfo property: From this property we can determine that, in the absence of an IFormatProvider being specified, the DateTime.Parse method will assume that the provided date should be treated as if it were in the format defined by the CultureInfo object that is attached to the current thread. The culture specified by the CultureInfo instance on the current thread can vary depending on several factors, but if you’re writing an application where a single instance might be used by people from different cultures (i.e. a web application with an international user base), it’s important to know what this value is. Having a solid strategy for setting the current thread’s culture for each incoming request in an internationally used ASP .NET application is obviously important, and might make a good topic for a future post. For now, let’s think about what the implications of not having the correct culture set on the current thread. Let’s say you’re running an ASP .NET application on a server in the United States. The server was setup by English speakers in the United States, so it’s configured for US English. It exposes a web page where users can enter order data, one piece of which is an anticipated order delivery date. Most users are in the US, and therefore enter dates in a ‘month/day/year’ format. The application is using the DateTime.Parse(string) method to turn the values provided by the user into actual DateTime instances that can be stored in the database. This all works fine, because your users and your server both think of dates in the same way. Now you need to support some users in South America, where a ‘day/month/year’ format is used. The best case scenario at this point is a user will enter March 13, 2011 as ‘25/03/2011’. This would cause the call to DateTime.Parse to blow up since that value doesn’t look like a valid date in the US English culture (Note: In all likelihood you might be using the DateTime.TryParse(string) method here instead, but that method behaves the same way with regard to date formats). “But wait a minute”, you might be saying to yourself, “I thought you said that this was the best case scenario?” This scenario would prevent users from entering orders in the system, which is bad, but it could be worse! What if the order needs to be delivered a day earlier than that, on March 12, 2011? Now the user enters ‘12/03/2011’. Now the call to DateTime.Parse sees what it thinks is a valid date, but there’s just one problem: it’s not the right date. Now this order won’t get delivered until December 3, 2011. In my opinion, that kind of data corruption is a much bigger problem than having the Parse call fail. What To Do? My order entry example is a bit contrived, but I think it serves to illustrate the potential issues with accepting date input from users. There are some approaches you can take to make this easier on you and your users: Eliminate ambiguity by using a graphical date input control. I’m personally a fan of a jQuery UI Datepicker widget. It’s pretty easy to setup, can be themed to match the look and feel of your site, and has support for multiple languages and cultures. Be sure you have a way to track the culture preference of each user in your system. For a web application this could be done using something like a cookie or session state variable. Ensure that the current user’s culture is being applied correctly to DateTime formatting and parsing code. This can be accomplished by ensuring that each request has the handling thread’s CultureInfo set properly, or by using the Format and Parse method overloads that accept an IFormatProvider instance where the provided value is a CultureInfo object constructed using the current user’s culture preference. When in doubt, favor formats that are internationally recognizable. Using the string ‘2010-03-05’ is likely to be recognized as March, 5 2011 by users from most (if not all) cultures. Favor standard date format strings over custom ones. So far we’ve only talked about turning a string into a DateTime, but most of the same “gotchas” apply when doing the opposite. Consider this code: someDateValue.ToString("MM/dd/yyyy"); This will output the same string regardless of what the current thread’s culture is set to (with the exception of some cultures that don’t use the Gregorian calendar system, but that’s another issue all together). For displaying dates to users, it would be better to do this: someDateValue.ToString("d"); This standard format string of “d” will use the “short date format” as defined by the culture attached to the current thread (or provided in the IFormatProvider instance in the proper method overload). This means that it will honor the proper month/day/year, year/month/day, or day/month/year format for the culture. Knowing Your Audience The examples and suggestions shown above can go a long way toward getting an application in shape for dealing with date inputs from users in multiple cultures. There are some instances, however, where taking approaches like these would not be appropriate. In some cases, the provider or consumer of date values that pass through your application are not people, but other applications (or other portions of your own application). For example, if your site has a page that accepts a date as a query string parameter, you’ll probably want to format that date using invariant date format. Otherwise, the same URL could end up evaluating to a different page depending on the user that is viewing it. In addition, if your application exports data for consumption by other systems, it’s best to have an agreed upon format that all systems can use and that will not vary depending upon whether or not the users of the systems on either side prefer a month/day/year or day/month/year format. I’ll look more at some approaches for dealing with these situations in a future post. If you take away one thing from this post, make it an understanding of the importance of knowing where the dates that pass through your system come from and are going to. You will likely want to vary your parsing and formatting approach depending on your audience.

  • Can't figure out jQuery ajax call parameters

    - by chad larson
    I am learning jQuery and trying the following but the parameters are so foreign to me with all the embedded quotes I think that is my problem. Can someone explain the parameters and where quotes go and possibly rewrite my parameters line? (This is a live site to see the required parms). function AirportInfo() { var divToBeWorkedOn = '#detail'; var webMethod = "'http://ws.geonames.org/citiesJSON'"; var parameters = "{'north':'44.1','south':'9.9','east':'22.4','west':'55.2','lang':'de'}"; $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: webMethod, data: parameters, contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", success: function(msg) { alert(msg.d); $(divToBeWorkedOn).html(msg.d); }, error: function(xhr) { alert(xhr); alert(xhr.statusText); alert(xhr.responseText); $(divToBeWorkedOn).html("Unavailable"); } }); }

  • How to only round selected corners in a fancytitle box with Tikz

    - by Christian Jonassen
    If you take a look at http://www.texample.net/tikz/examples/boxes-with-text-and-math/ the boxes there are with rounded corners. In the examples, both the box itself and the title is a box. I want the title box to not have the bottom corners rounded. On page 120 in the manual, there is a description of how to draw with and without rounded corners. However, I want to use this in a fancytitle. It looks a bit silly to have the fancytitle as a box where all corners are rounded when it is as wide as the box itself. \begin{tikzpicture}[baseline=-2cm] \node [mybox] (box){ \begin{minipage}[t!]{0.50\textwidth} Help, I'm a box \end{minipage} }; \node[fancytitle, text width=0.5423\textwidth, text centered, rounded corners] at (box.north) {Help, I'm a title}; \end{tikzpicture} The style I use is this \tikzstyle{mybox} = [draw=red, fill=blue!20, very thick, rectangle, rounded corners, inner sep=10pt, inner ysep=20pt] \tikzstyle{fancytitle} = [fill=red, text=white]

  • Global "ajax call" notification with asp.net mvc/jquery

    - by Joel Martinez
    I need to be notified any time a largeish asp.net mvc web application makes an ajax call to the server. We're using both jquery, and the built-in Ajax.* methods to do the remote calls, and I would like a global way of knowing when we make a call without having to manually inject some sort of "IsMakingCall" method to every request. The root problem we're trying to solve is session timeout. If the user leaves a page up and goes to lunch (for example), they get errors when they get back because the ajax call is returning the login page instead of the expected json or partial html result. My idea was to have a js timer which would be reset any time we make an ajax call. That way, if the timer runs out (ie. their session has now timed out) I can just auto-log them out. This is how sites like bank of america and mint.com work. Thanks!

  • Hiring *good* Mobile Developers in/to Korea - overseas hiring question

    - by Jason
    Hello everyone. My question is regarding the best way to find a good mobile developer in Korea, or in another country to bring to Korea. Our company is growing fast and we need some quality mobile developers to start getting our system onto mobile. The problem is, however, that in Korea, their are very few mobile developers (currently) and their pay is extremely expensive. We have looked into India and other SE Asian countries and have concluded that bringing in a developer from another country may be the best choice. However, I am worried about how to find developers that are motivated by passion/creativity instead of getting a paycheck, and am also worried about what country may provide the higher quality worker. To clarify, we would bring in these workers from their country to Korea, and help them get settled here and working in our office. Has anyone had any experience doing this sort of thing in America/Korea/another country? Thank you very much for your replies.
