  • how do you clear apple/mac install program files?

    I installed a 30-day "test drive" of QuarkXpress, but got pulled in to other projects and didn't have time to test it. I now need to test it, but the 30 days are up. So I want to install the "test drive" again, but it won't let me. So far I uninstalled the old copy, signed up under a different account, and downloaded a new version. I know there has to be application data somewhere, but I am a PC person and don't know where to look in the Apple. HELP! Thanks. Oh, and if necessary, I am using Mac OS X (SnowLeopard) Version 10.6.8 on a MacPro

  • "iTunes.app" to accept incoming network connections?

    Every time I open iTunes I get the the following warning: Do you want the application "iTunes.app" to accept incoming network connections? Clicking Deny may limit the application's behavior. This setting can be changed in the Firewall pane of Security preferences. I always click "Allow" but it still pops up. I set the OS X firewall to allow incoming connections for iTunes. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

  • How do you know where macports installs python packages to?

    I am running macports to install scipy and such on OS X leopard with python 2.7. The install runs successfully, but running python and trying to import the packages I've installed, they're not found. What I'm running is: sudo python_select python27 sudo port install py27-wxpython py27-numpy py27-matplotlib sudo port install py27-scipy py27-ipython Opening up python in interactive mode (it is the correct version of python), I type 'import scipy' and get a module not found error. What gives? How can I find out where it is installing the packages to instead?

  • OS X Application icons missing after filesystem tampering

    A while back I installed some Google software, I forget what it was, but it was something that attached itself to Google Chrome and was un-uninstallable short of uninstalling all of Chrome. It was a total pain in the a$$. Anyways, I was trying to put up a fight before going nuclear and just wiping Chrome, and during that fight, something went wrong (i.e., I didn't know what I was doing). I remember messing around with the Applications folder somehow. I don't remember what exactly I did, but it perhaps involved some interchanging between the /Applications and /User/Username/Applications folders? Definitely some tampering in those areas, I'm sure at least about that. Anyways, I've since updated and restarted my computer. Now, while all my apps work fine, many of them have blank icons - not on the Dock, those icons are fine, but in Spotlight search results, etc. Currently, my /Applications folder contains only OS X-cooked-in applications. My ~/Applications folder contains cooked in apps AND post-OS/third-party apps. There hasn't been any functionality deficit so far, but I don't like working on a machine where something isn't how it should be. I know my information was vague, but does anyone know what went wrong / how to fix it? OS X Mavericks 10.9.3

  • Disable all the idiot-checking in Mac OS X

    I am a Windows/Linux user, who is learning Mac OS X out of interest in doing dev-work for the iPad which I recently purchased. However, OS X is driving me nuts by trying to protect all it's system files, hiding all of the important OS components I want to tweak, and generally making it impossible to do any modification to the OS in general to make it more usable. Therefore, is there a way to turn off all the idiot-checking in Finder? On XP, I can disable "Hide Protected Operating system files" and set "Show Hidden Files". On linux, there really aren't many hidden files, and changing the configuration for .files is easy enough in Gnome and XFCE. How can I set up OS X in a similar way. I am not new to computers, and I am fully aware that deleting system files can damage or even irreparably disable a OS install. Therefore, If I intentionally try to delete a file, or move something, it's probably intentional, and I am willing to accept the consequences in any case. At this point, I have fallen back to doing everything through the command line (which takes forever), because Finder is practically unusable. (As for what I am attempting to do, I also asked about GUI changes here.)

  • Selectively routing traffic via ethernet or wifi, with proper DNS (Mac OS X 10.6)

    When I'm at work, I access various intranet pages as well as the wider Internet through ethernet. However, the company LAN blocks some ports (e.g. Google Calendar). I can get to those through WiFi. So, I gave the Airport priority, and then using route add, I set up selective routing: all intranet traffic goes through the ethernet and everything else via WiFi: sudo route add 10.0.0.0/8 <intranet gateway>. However, there are a number of intranet sites that have their own DNS; i.e., hr.company.com only resolves on the intranet. The only way that I can get the DNS to work properly is to add the internal DNS server to the Airport DNS listing, however I fear that when I go elsewhere and forget, this will break things. What's the right way to get the DNS to resolve using this setup?

  • Can't connect to local IP address on OSX

    I'm trying to connect to a webserver that's running on my mac OSX 1.6. I'm able to connect to it locally using http://127.0.0.1:8888/myapp but when I attempt to connect to it using my machine's local IP address (http://192.168.1.15:8888/myapp IP shown below) from the same machine (or another on the network) I cannot connect. I can ping the LAN IP address. I've tried adding IP forwarding to my router for port 8888 but it didn't help. I've checked and the OSX firewall is disabled Can anyone suggest what else is blocking the connection?     I'm just curious as to the possibility of loading and executing elf files on OSX. I know the standard executable format is MACHO, but NASM is unable to generate debug information for MACHO objects (and I am required to use NASM). I imagine its a long shot, but I don't suppose I can use ELF files. I can build them with NASM, but I can't seem to even link them with LD.

  • Hide Java application from command-tab application switcher in OSX

    I have a java application that has an icon in the tray of the menu bar at the top of OSX. I've been able to remove the icon from the dock when the application is "minimized to tray", but it still appears when I command-tab to switch between my running applications. I'd like to hide it from there too, but I'm not sure how to do that, so I would appreciate any advice Thanks!

  • Mouse/Touchpad not working in Mac OS X Lion Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA) with File Vault 2

    I set up File Vault 2 in Mac OS X Lion with Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA). In PBA-login my USB-keyboard is working, while using a wrong keyboard layout. I can neither use my magic touchpad nor an USB-mouse in PBA. Thus I can't change the keyboard layout located in the upper right corner. I tried unplugging all USB-devices except keyboard and mouse. Nothing seems to help and the mouse cursor isn't moving. How can I get magic trackpad or USB-mouse to work in PBA login screen or manually set the used keyboard layout in PBA? Update: Still no (USB-)mouse or bluetooth trackpad support in File Vault 2 Login Screen. Today I talked to Apple Support for over one hour with no result. Every idea is appreciated.

  • How get OSX Lion to save Modifier Key Settings (i.e. swap Ctrl and Cmd)

    I use Lion at work with an MS Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Every single time I log in I have to go into settings and swap the command and control keys. This is really annoying. Is there a way to get these settings to stick? Beyond that, I'd also like to remap a few other keys and I'm interested in tools for doing that.   • How can I disable the guest account on OSX Lion?

    I have 'disabled' the guest account on my macbook pro running Lion via System Preferences Users & Groups. However the guest account still seems to appear as an option to login at start up and when switching users. I have never used the guest account for anything, and I have tried a system restore but the guest user has returned as before. How can I get rid of it? Thanks. edit: I also just enabled and disabled the account again - but the guest option still appears at startup offering a safari only restart for a guest user.

  • Need help setting up OpenLDAP on OSX Mountain Lion

    I'm trying to get OpenLDAP manually configured on OSX Mountain Lion. I'd prefer to do it manually instead of installing OSX server, but if that's the only option (i.e., OpenLDAP on OSX isn't meant to be used without server) then I'll just install it. I've seen guides that mostly just say to change the password in slapd.conf and then start the server and it should work. However, whenever I try to do anything with the client it tells me this: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) I've tried encrypting the password as well as leaving it plain it doesn't seem to matter. The version is 2.4.28 and I've read as of 2.4 OpenLDAP uses slapd.d directories, but that doesn't seem to be the case in OSX. There was mention of an 'olcRootPW' I should use (instead of 'rootpw' in slapd.conf), but I only found that in a file named slapd.ldif. So ... I'm really confused. Has anyone got OpenLDAP working on OSX Moutain Lion without the server tools?

  • Multiple calls with Simple Modal OSX Style Dialog

    I am using Simple Modal, the OSX style version. I have two calls to the modal and therefore two versions of content. When either of the buttons is clicked it selects only the first lot of content. There is nowhere to put a hook on the content like most modal windows as there is no javascript on the page to add parameters... only an external .js file which I don't want to touch for obvious reasons.     Hi I have compiled Mozilla NPAPI plugin example npruntime on Mac OSX 10.5. It give me a libnprt.dylib I am bundling this dylib with proper plist. On loading the plugin, NP_GetMIMEDescription() is getting called (i am logging this), but its not going inside NP_GetEntryPoints(). How a part of code is getting loaded and a part not?     I attached to a program with gdb in OSX and I want to use CFShow in the gdb console etc. However, nothing shows up. printf shows nothing as well: (gdb) call (int) printf("Hello\n") $10 = 6 (gdb) call (int) printf("Hello World!\n") $11 = 13 Apple suggests the following tip for when attaching with gdb, to make the output appear in the gdb console: (gdb) call (void) close(1) (gdb) call (void) close(2) (gdb) shell tty /dev/ttyp1 (gdb) call (int) open("/dev/ttyp1", 2, 0) $1 = 1 (gdb) call (int) open("/dev/ttyp1", 2, 0) $2 = 2 In xcode's gdb console tty gives "not a tty", so I tried it in gdb in a terminal. There tty does work but after redirecting stdout there's still no output. Also no output if I direct stdout to a file.. :/ Any salvation?
