  Hey All, I am new to Apple and my task is to install VMs on a Mac server. I am trying to install 4 VMs and I want them to have separate IPs and be visible on the network as separate machines. What are my options ? My research shows me that I can use bridged network, but I have to select an adapter. I have only two network adapters, does that mean I can only have 2 VMs ? And when I configure the 2 VMS, will my actual server have internet connection ? Or does it use the Mac address ?

  On my Mac when I hit the "enter" key on a file on my desktop or in the finder, it enters the "rename file" mode. 1) How do you actually "launch" or "open" (i.e. double click) the file with only the keyboard? In Windows, the Enter key does this. 2) Is there a way to map the Enter key to do this in Mac instead of rename? Honestly, it makes little sense to me. I mean, how often do you rename something? Once, maybe. How often do you open something? Lots and lots of times.

• VPN authentication and MAC addresses

  I have to set up a VPN (various clients connecting to a web service on a server, which is also the VPN server) and I want to make sure that no user will share his/her credentials with third parties. I know that this problem is not solvable completely, but I'd want to set up some additional security checks... Some idea I have: 1) An additional check on MAC address, but... are MAC addresses preserved thru VPN? 2) Some kind of extra identification of the client (User Agent, open ports, I want to make sure that is the very same client I authorized). 3) I would like to avoid commercial solutions like a security token... I realize it would be the perfect solution, but it will be to expensive, I suppose... Do you feel that these options are viable? Do you have any other ideas? Thanks in advance for your replies!

  My Mac is joined to an Active Directory domain. What I expected to see was the same ease of access to file shares and internal websites that Windows computers joined to the domain experience (i.e., no authentication needed; it just uses Windows Integrated Authentication). Instead I am asked for credentials each time I try to access those shares and protected websites (e.g. SharePoint). Is this normal behavior, or is something wrong with my Mac that it prompts me for my username and password for the domain when I access Windows file shares or intranet sites protected by NTLM/Kerberos? • Can't Type Tilde character in Mac OS X

  Hi this is a new problem that I did not have a few weeks ago. I have a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard running on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The problem is that I cannot type a tilde. Instead when I press the tilde I get this character: §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ I cannot for the life of me figure this out, except that I vaguely remember I can asked to redetect the Mac keyboard layout for this keyboard and I think i chose the wrong one. Now I get this weird character when pressing tilde. How can I fix this? Or how can I redetect this keyboard layout? Thanks.

• Mac Book Pro wakes up in my backpack

  This has happened to me twice: I press the power button on my Mac Book Pro, choose sleep, close it, unplug everything, confirm that is off (by pressing my ear to it) and put it in my bag. Some minutes later, the laptop wakes up by itself. Both times I caught it in time. The second time it was so hot I couldn't touch some parts -- it refused to actually wake up, and the screen was blank. Restarting it worked though. Any ideas what might be going on and/or how to prevent this? More details: It's a Mac Book Pro unibody 15" from 2009.

  Has anyone been able to install Windows 7 x64 under Bootcamp on a Mac? I was able to get the 32-bit version to install, but I cannot get x64 to install. The Mac doesn't seem to even want to boot the DVD. And even if I get it installed are there drivers that will work with it? I'd prefer to have Windows 7 x64 because I'd like to use the entire 6GB RAM in my MacBook Pro. I'd appreciate any tips or advice.

  I need to start using GIT for my projects from now on and I need to use some UNIX commands. but no matter what I do, I always receive "command not found" error.   At work we use domains like abc-01, which work fine on windows. Whilst developing mobile applications we already saw that this doesn't work on both iOS and android which we fixed for a few specific domains (by setting the dns up that abc-01.def.local also works in those) and was assumed to be caused by it being an invalid domain. Now however it's necessary to connect through VPN from a mac and changing all relevant domains is not an option at the moment (far too many of them and would require changing the settings of far too many applications), so I was hoping whether somebody knows a trick or setting to get this to work on mac (or even linux in general).

  How can I make Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab switch between tabs in Terminal.app on a Mac (OS 10.4 and 10.5 specifically)? This is how I switch tabs in Firefox and Aquamacs, and Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-] is too awkward to me. I am aware of this related question: .../unable-to-switch-a-tab-efficiently-in-macs-terminal* And hence the Keyboard Shortcuts section of the System Preferences, but the dialog box for Keyboard Shortcuts doesn't seem to accept Ctrl-Tab in the Keyboard Shortcut field. Is there a special keyboard sequence for inputting tabs (with modifiers) into a dialog box field on a Mac? Is there any other method that would allow me to customize Terminal.app in the way I desire? Not really a programming question, but I think the answer would be useful to other folks that program on Macs and would like to have some consistency between interfaces of different applications.   I love Ubuntu Linux - especially the commmand line. But I have to admit that, at least for now, Windows is more user-friendly - there's more software for it, more drivers, and more stuff just works. Knowing that Mac is built on Unix makes me wonder if it's the sweet spot between them. But I wonder: how similar is the Mac command line to Linux's bash? Could I pick right up with using vim and bash scripting and git, etc? Would common commands like changing directories be different? Does anybody know an online "compare and contrast" resource?

• Mac Mini 1.66 no sound on Windows 7

  I've tried everything I could to get the sound working. I've tried to install the drivers from the Snow Leopard disk, then I went and got the latest RealTek drivers from the RealTek website. Then I read that old Mac mini's could have an integrated Cirrus chip, and I tried to grab the latest driver from the website, and it appeared to install, but nothing. There's also nothing listed under Sound and ... in the Device Manager. I've tried to manually include a legacy driver, which worked for RealTek but not for the Cirrus driver. Of course it said there was no RealTek hardware install, which makes me think it's a Cirrus chip. Any further suggestions or thoughts would be really appreciated. This is a Mac Mini 1.66. I'm also not sure how to be able to detect what card is integrated into the system, so that would be helpful too (remembering that there's no driver installed). Even just to get the chip type would be great to confirm.

  Is there any way to view automator process that are running? About a year ago I created a workflow or something similar in Mac's Automator. When I took screenshots mac would place them on the desktop. I created a small script to take move those screenshots to a different folder. I want to change what folder those are saved in now. Problem is, I can't figure out how to edit my workflow. The biggest problem, I don't know where the workflow/file is stored. The process is always running so anytime I take a screenshot it is moved. Is there any way to view automator process that are running? Also, I know there are other ways to make screenshots appear in different folders. • Vim and mouse with ssh from Mac to Linux

  Hey. I certainly know it's possible to make the mouse work in Vim on a remote session to a Linux machine from my Mac, but I haven't figured out just how. Daily vim gives a tip on making it work but if I try to set 'mac-ansi', for example, I get an error saying I can only specify values beginning with builtin_ (riscos, beos-ansi, etc). I've tried using ssh -X, combined with set mouse=a and set term=builtin_anso for example, but with no success with or without combining them. I'm using Snow Leopard and attempting to use the mouse on a Debian machine with vim 7.1.314. I've had a look at the documentation but can't make it work. Any tips?

  I am looking at Outlook for Mac (in Office 2011). I wanted to find out what versions of Exchange are supported, as well as whether MAPI is supported. I googled and also searched the Microsoft site. I also checked in wikipedia, but it was probably too soon. I found announcement about Outlook for Mac I found the system requirements on the official site, but they don't say anything on these topics. I saw some forum traffic saying: MAPI is not supported, but there was no attribution, so I won't bother to quote it. Can anyone point me to some official documents that address these concerns?
