• Wifi - wireless network not working after installing Ubuntu 12.04

  I had installed ubuntu 12.04 in my Dell Vostro 3460. Initially wired as well wireless both are not working. After installing compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc.tar.bz2 wired network fine but wireless is not working. Previously both were working fine with ubuntu 11.10. • 12.0.4.3 - Missing Battery Icon, auto Suspend not working, Keyboard shortcuts volume up/down no longer working

  Problems I am experiencing: Battery Icon not showing up unity bar (top right corner). Volume Up/Down/Mute not working. Bluetooth hot keys described above also not working.Brightness up/down keys on this keyboard no longer working (apple wireless keyboard) Laptop no longer suspends when lid is shut. I have to go to 'power' button on top right corner and click on 'Suspend' All was working flawlessly until I did the following: I have recently upgraded to Nvidia propriety driver version 319 {version recommended}. Installed Xscreensaver and then removed it and went back to default screensaver. Done a system update (1st since installing) and now currently running: Linux 3.8.0-32-generic #47~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 2 16:19:35 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NOTE: Base system was ubuntu 12.04.3 installed from ISO however lsb_release reports "No LSB modules are available" 4.installed psensor. I have check power setting (via Settings) and power setting via dconf-editor and set to recommended settings as described in posts detailing solution to this problem. - I have disabled 1) Nvdia settings at startup and 2) psensor at startup but this does not help. I am using an HP DV7 with 2GB Nvidia card. Not using any fancy graphics features. Recommendations? Thanks.

• Indie devs working with publishers

  I'm an independent game developer considering working with a publisher. This question is very informative however I have more questions. Please give feedback on the following issues... I think this can be helpful to many indie devs in the same situation. Source code: is it common for developers to give the publisher the source code? Code quality: does this matter when working with a publisher any more so than when just working on your own (or in a small team)? Just wondering if developers working for the publisher might scoff at the code quality and perhaps influence the relationship between developer and publisher. Unique game concepts: are publishers generally biased towards new/novel game concepts? Intellectual property: if I send a playable demo to a publisher what's to stop them from just reproducing the new/novel game mechanic? I think the answer is basically nothing... but I'm wondering if this is a realistic concern. Revenue sharing: how does it work? what's a common ratio? 70/30? 30/70? Flaky publishers: how common is it for a publisher to "string along" developers for a while then just drop them? Can this be reconciled with a contract of some kind? And any other issues you've encountered or heard of.

• Touchpad not working after connecting hdmi cable

  I had installed Ubuntu 14.04 2 weeks back on my new laptop along side Windows 8. 1. And it was working fine. But yesterday after I connected Ubuntu with my TV using the HDMI cable, the cursor/ pointer stopped working. The pointer is not visible and my touchpad is not working. I connected the hdmi cable with youtube in Firefox. But only the wallpaper was visible on the TV. Also the right click menu, alt tab window, etc was also visible. But the side menu and the Firefox window was not visible. The pointer was visible on the tv and the touchpad was working, I was able to move the pointer. After I removed the HDMI cable, my cursor/pointer disappeared and my touchpad is not responding! ! I tried to restart many times, but still no luck. Its still not visible in the desktop. The pointer is visible in the login screen, but is not responding to the touchpad. I tried to login to my KDE session, there too the pointer is visible but is not responding to the touchpad. It is not moving.

• My sound is not working, so I'm going to reinstall FYI [closed]

  I've had trouble getting the sound to work in Ubuntu 12.04 I'm running an Acer Aspire 5739g laptop. This is using a clean install. This wasn't a problem when ubuntu first installed. Rather, it was when I ran the updates that it stopped working. I already tried the suggestions on the ubuntu sites and other similar queries, and they haven't fixed it. Something in the updates is making my sound not work. Edit: It turns out that this might be a bug (the sound issue, first paragraph). After reinstall, it happened again (it's not caused by updates at all, or any software, because I fixed it now w/o reinstall). It seems like I replicated it as follows: I changed auto-hide in the behavior tab of Appearance settings by turning it on, and setting the sensitivity to below the recommended setting. Then instead of restarting, I just logged out and back in. The sound stopped working again. I set the behavior settings to default, restarted, and now it's back to normal. Not sure if it's due to only logging out (and not restarting) or b/c I set my sensitivity to a low setting. Not sure if this helps anyone, but thought I'd mention it.

• Help with C# program design implementation: multiple array of lists or a better way?

  I'm creating a 2D tile-based RPG in XNA and am in the initial design phase. I was thinking of how I want my tile engine to work and came up with a rough sketch. Basically I want a grid of tiles, but at each tile location I want to be able to add more than one tile and have an offset. I'd like this so that I could do something like add individual trees on the world map to give more flair. Or set bottles on a bar in some town without having to draw a bunch of different bar tiles with varying bottles. But maybe my reach is greater than my grasp. I went to implement the idea and had something like this in my Map object: List<Tile>[,] Grid; But then I thought about it. Let's say I had a world map of 200x200, which would actually be pretty small as far as RPGs go. That would amount to 40,000 Lists. To my mind I think there has to be a better way. Now this IS pre-mature optimization. I don't know if the way I happen to design my maps and game will be able to handle this, but it seems needlessly inefficient and something that could creep up if my game gets more complex. One idea I have is to make the offset and the multiple tiles optional so that I'm only paying for them when needed. But I'm not sure how I'd do this. A multiple array of objects? object[,] Grid; So here's my criteria: A 2D grid of tile locations Each tile location has a minimum of 1 tile, but can optionally have more Each extra tile can optionally have an x and y offset for pinpoint placement Can anyone help with some ideas for implementing such a design (don't need it done for me, just ideas) while keeping memory usage to a minimum?   By guest blogger Roland Smart We're just days away from what is gunning to be the most exciting installment of OpenWorld to date, so how about an exciting sneak peak at the very first Social Developer Program? If your first thought is, "What's a social developer?" you're not alone. It’s an emerging term and one we think will gain prominence as social experiences become more prevalent in enterprise applications. For those who keep an eye on the ever-evolving Facebook platform, you'll recall that they recently rebranded their PDC (preferred developer consultant) group as the PMD (preferred marketing developer), signaling the importance of development resources inside the marketing organization to unlock the potential of social. The marketing developer they're referring to could be considered a social developer in a broader context. While it's true social has really blossomed in the marketing context and CMOs are winning more and more technical resources, social is starting to work its way more deeply into the enterprise with the help of developers that work outside marketing. Developers, like the rest of us, have fallen in "like" with social functionality and are starting to imagine how social can transform enterprise applications in the way it has consumer-facing experiences. The thesis of my presentation is that social developers will take many pages from the marketing playbook as they apply social inside the enterprise. To support this argument, lets walk through a range of enterprise applications and explore how consumer-facing social experiences might be interpreted in this context. Here's one example of how a social experience could be integrated into a sales enablement application. As a marketer, I spend a great deal of time collaborating with my sales colleagues, so I have good insight into their working process. While at Involver, we grew our sales team quickly, and it became evident some of our processes broke with scale. For example, we used to have weekly team meetings at which we'd discuss what was working and what wasn't from a messaging perspective. One aspect of these sessions focused on "objections" and "responses," where the salespeople would walk through common objections to purchasing and share appropriate responses. We tried to map each context to best answers and we'd capture these on a wiki page. As our team grew, however, participation at scale just wasn't tenable, and our wiki pages quickly lost their freshness. Imagine giving salespeople a place where they could submit common objections and responses for their colleagues to see, sort, comment on, and vote on. What you'd get is an up-to-date and relevant repository of information. And, if you supported an application like this with a social graph, it would be possible to make good recommendations to individual sales people about the objections they'd likely hear based on vertical, product, region or other graph data. Taking it even further, you could build in a badging/game element to reward those salespeople who participate the most. Both these examples are based on proven models at work inside consumer-facing applications. • Working with Legacy code

  I'm going to start a series on working with legacy code based on some of things I have learnt over the years. First I define my terms for 'legacy', I define legacy as (as someone on twitter called it) not brownfield but blackfield. Brownfield can be code you did yesterday, last week or last month etc. Blackfield tends to be a great older (think years old) and worked on by a great deal many people. Sure brownfield can also be legacy code but often has far less smells and technical debt, due to it's age the problems are often far worse and far harder to treat.  I'm not sure how many posts I'll write for the series or how long it will run for but I'll add them as and when they occur to me. Finally if you are working with the kind of codebase I describe then Michael Feathers 'Working with Legacy code' is a great resource.

  When I had windows 7 installed on my computer, My TV tuner card used to work fine after installing the drivers but on ubuntu it is not working. I have tried several Softwares to get it working but none helped. Today I installed Me Tv and when I open it, I get an error saying "There are no DVB devices available". What can I do to get my Philips TV Tuner card working. • ibus-avro for Bengali not working in Ubuntu 13.10

  I've upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10, then ibus-avro for Bengali is not working. I've tried to reinstall ibus but no success. ibus-avro Icon is showing but not sure whats the problem. It should be working like this... The icon on top is showing properly, but it's not working. May be there are some communication problem. So currently after upgrade it's like this... As we can see the Bangla text is not appearing... • Program error trying to generate Outlook 2013 email from Visual Basic 2010 [on hold]

  I am using vb to send emails through outlook. Currently we have a mix of outlook versions at our office: 2010 and 2013 with a mix of 32 bit and 64 bit (a mess, I know). I have referenced the version 15 dll for 2013 and it seems to be backward compatible, but when I try to use the above code for 2013 (it is 64 bit) it says it cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error has occured. This is happening on the application Dim statement line. I have tried googling around but there doesn't seem to be much out there referencing 2013 but I feel that the problem here probably has more to do with 64 bit than the software version. • cygwin GNU make .net program piping inconsistent behavior

  This question may sound like a superuser question but I feel there is something related to programming. Anyway, my computer had a fresh installation of Win 7 64 and cygwin recently. Now I observed some problem with pipe handling in gnu make file. The following is the Makefile I use to reproduce the issue: all: fsutil | cat my-dotnet-console.exe | cat The problem is: for the first command line, the piping works every time but for the second command line, the piping barely works - I got no result for the second command for most cases, regardless of the environment (cmd or bash) in which the make file is invoked. However, if I copy paste the second command line into cmd (or bash), the pipe works every time. The following is my .net program: static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine(new string('a', 40)); Console.Out.Flush(); } The make version is 3.82.90 but the same problem was observed in a previous version (because of the windows path handling problem in 3.82.9, I replaced make.exe with a previous version). I don't know the exact cygwin version I have installed but the current version on cygwin.com is 1.7.11-1. Currently, my work around is to redirect the output to a temporary file but it would be great if I can avoid the temporary file. Thanks

• Looking for a light weight note program.

  This might belongs on superuser but for me it's part of programming so i will ask it here. I find I use notepad to keep chunks of data that are important but not important enough to keep in my head. The one problem with this is I end up with a lot of files on my desktop that I don't know what they are for, or I don't save the file and my computer gets rebooted for some reason. So that big ramble leads to the question. I am looking for a note taking system that is light weight and easy to manage. I would rather it not be a huge application like onenote but if that is what you are using and is is working well for you could you explain how you are doing it? Thanks Erin.

• Sound is not working correctly on Ubuntu 12.04

  I know this is my own fault. But what i did was this first i wrote this command 'sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio' and then i wrote again 'sudo apt-get install pulseaudio' and now the sound doesn't work properly And the Indicator doesn't work either, it's just grayed out. The shortcuts are not working either. • Get Creative soundcard working correctly

  I am trying to get sound going on my fresh install of 10.10. I have a creative fatlity branded sound card. My ALSA information. Most things seems to be working out of the box, once I turned off my onboard sound in my BIOS the soundcard kicked in. However, the system sounds aren't working (I love those drums and the road runner sound when you press backspace). Also, with a 7.1 setup my center channel and subwoofer don't work at all. All other channels are working like a champ. So I am trying to accomplish two things, get system sounds working and get center/sub channels working. How should I try to fix this?

• Ubuntu 12.10, Wireless not working

  My Laptop is Acer 5742G with "Npilfy 802.11 wireless". I have both windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 Earlier when I had Ubuntu 12.04, the wireless was working fine, but after installing 12.10 wireless is not working at all, although it is still working in windows. I am not able to see "Wireless Networks" in the Network Manager nor in the Network Settings. This was the output I got for rfkill 0: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: acer-bluetooth: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 2: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no This is a snapshot of my Additional Drivers settings. As you can see, the required driver for wireless is installed.

• Starting to Program C++ and Java

  So as the title states, I'm trying to start programming in C++ and Java. I took C++ and Java courses in high school and I'm trying to get back into it. Of course all I want to get working now is a simple "Hello World" program. Couple of things: I want to use an IDE. I've decided on Eclipse. I'm just confused about how I go about downloading/using it. For Java: I get stuck right on their download page. They show Eclipse Classic, Eclipse IDE for Java developers and Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers. I only programmed in Notepad and compiled in command prompt. Question 1: Which version of Eclipse should I download? Question 2: Do I need to install the Java JDK or does it come built into Eclipse? For C++: I guess I download the separate Eclipse IDE for C/C++ developers? I'm not too sure. I remember using Microsoft Visual for C++. I remember it being weird though. Anyways Question 3: Which version of Eclipse should I download? Question 4: Does C++ have a Development Kit or does it come built into Eclipse?

• Ubuntu 12.10 TTY console (Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6]) not working

  I've been a Ubuntu user for some time now. I have a very annoying problem, I have no idea what causes it, and I haven't managed to find anything relevant after Googling like crazy. The problem is my TTY consoles are not working. Usually, these are activated using CTRL ALT F[1-6]. It was working when I was using the Nouveau drivers, but after installing the nVidia proprietary drivers, instead of getting a terminal console I get a strange monochrome pattern that slowly fades away. Does anyone know how to get CTRL + ALT + F[1-6] working again?

• Working on a virtual machine as a developer

  In the company I'm currently working in, they decided that each developer will move to a VM desktop (Citrix/WinServer2012) an develop/test from there with restricted/no rights to install new software. The Server we will be working on are in a remote Datacenter. So i.e. if for some reason or another the internet brake down, we can't work till the connection is up again. As a developer I don't want to use windows as OS for my working/development environment as there is no need because we don't develop OS specific software. What good points could I raise in an argumentation against moving to the VMs beside the loss/restriction of freedom and the loss of connection to the internet?

• Dell wireless not working after upgrade

  So, the short version of my sad story is that I tried upgrade Ubuntu to 12.04 and wireless driver has stopped working. I have tried all the solutions but nothing seem to be working. When I try to install my wireless from "Additional Drivers" Its says: Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log The lspci command gives me the following info about wireless: 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01) I have tried removing bcm drivers and reinstalling, but nothing seems to be working. rfkill is good too.

  To improve the management of its life-saving operations, the National Marrow Donor Program recently modernized its financial and procurement operations by upgrading to Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.   As the global leader in bone marrow and umbilical cord blood transplants, the NMDP manages a complex ecosystem of donor, patient, hospital, and biological data. “Maintaining accurate data and having an efficient matching process is essential, particularly as our global database of bone marrow patients grows and donor lists expand,” says Bruce Schmaltz, director of finance/controller. “We rely on the Oracle E-Business Suite to ensure our procurement and financial management processes meet the highest standards, enabling our growing non-profit to work swiftly and efficiently to help improve and save lives.” As the non-profit organization and its registry grew larger, NMDP needed a modern platform to store and integrate its financial information and complicated procurement process. It selected Oracle E-Business Suite for its ability to fit seamlessly into NMDP’s enterprise architecture. NMDP initially implemented Oracle E-Business Suite release 12 by leveraging Oracle Business Accelerators, which are rapid implementation tools and templates that help reduce implementation time and costs. With Oracle Financial Management and Oracle Procurement, NMDP has streamlined back-office processes and integrated its procure-to-pay business processes by leveraging industry leading accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger modules. NMDP is currently rolling out Oracle Hyperion Performance Management applications and plans to implement Oracle Order Management and Oracle Advanced Pricing by the end of 2012. • Notifications not working in Gnome 3.4

  Notifications are no longer working in Gnome 3.4 but they are working in Unity. I have tried everything I can think of but I am stumped. To clarify, I am changing the theme using Gnome Tweak. Themes were obtained from various repositories including noobslab/themes and webupd8. As an example, when using the default theme adwaita, I get all notifications when using Rhythmbox as to what song is being played on an internet radio station. I even tried a different media player with the same result. When I change the theme, all I get is a media player Icon. Change back to default theme and all Notifications work fine. Notifications were working at first with all themes, but no longer. The question is how to get Notifications to work for all themes. They did for previous versions of Gnome-shell.
