• SharePoint Upgade Question

  My company will be upgrading our SharePoint 2007 site to SP2010 and I know how to do it. But there is one step in the migration step that I don't. The pre-upgrade checker will give you a list of components/solutions that are referenced in the contentDBs but is not installed on the upgraded sharepoint farm. What do you do if the component is not available for 2010? (I believe the only option is uninstall the component before migration). Even if an upgrade is available for upgraded components won't it have a different GUID and therefore not solve the migration error messages? In other words, isn't it true that "install missing components" advice for 07 components only work if the 07 components works in 2010 (which I think is very few components.). Thanks. Seth

• Question about network topology and routing performance

  Hello I am currently working on a uni project about routing protocols and network performance, one of the criteria i was going to test under was to see what effect lan topology has, ie workstations arranged in mesh, star, ring etc, but i am having doubts as to whether that would have any affect on the routing performance thus would be useless to do, rather i'm thinking it would be better to test under the topology of the routers themselves, ie routers arranged in either star, mesh ring etc. I would appreciate some feedback on this as I am rather confused. • Question about Remote WAN IP on NetGear FVS336G VPN setup

  I wanted to be able to have a VPN connection to my home network so I purchased the FVS336G because the reviews said it was easy set up. I am sure it is for someone that knows what needs to be entered it is easy, but I am a little confused. Using the VPN wizard I choose VPN Client as the tunnel connection, enter key, etc... but then I get to the "What is the remote WAN's IP or Internet Name" and "What is the local WAN's IP address or Internet Name" I am lost. I am probably being really dumb, but I am not sure what I need to put in here. Is the remote WAN ip the ip from the outside world to my cable modem? Is the local ip the ip to my FVS336G? Any help would be appreciated.

• Hosting Ventrilo - license question

  I have access to a dedicated server, and I would like to set up a Ventrilo server on it. I don't plan to profit from this Ventrilo server, but their website is quite vague about the legality of hosting a Ventrilo server (< 1000 slot, mind you) without paying for a license. Licensing looks fairly expensive considering I will never have more than a couple hundred slots in use. In summary: if I am hosting a Ventrilo server with less than a thousand slots, do I need to pay for a license?

• How to mark received sites as read in StumbleUpon toolbar?

  In stumbleupon toolbar for Firefox there is a "92" text is displayed in above pic, these are basically sites sent to me by my stumbleupon friends, so whenever I have sites from my friends, there in the toolbar and when I clicks the Stumble button then it shows those sites to me instead any new site. You can say these are link are like new mails, so there are 92 new mails for me, but I don't want to check those I just want to mark them as read in a single click, and move further to read other old mails. So Is there any option to mark these sites (sent to me by my SU friends) as read, so that when I click Stumble button then new sites will be shown instead sites which are sent by my friends??

  Im about to get a 23inch Monitor to connect to my laptop for programming, and general multimedia besides. (this is the monitor what do you think? LG 23" LCD And would you recommend getting a keyboard to use (ie not using the laptop one?) seems like it would be kinda awkward otherwise.   Hello, I would like to configure a task like "child control software", so it would hibernate the pc at certain times. Is it possible to prevent modification (here: pausing) of a task through requiring the entering of the admin password to modify, EVEN THOUGH the currently-logged-in (and only) user is the admin account itself? (Do you know of any child control software that does NOT require an additional account yet is able to hibernate the system at certain times?) Thanks a lot! Matthias

  I have a client that requires a massive amount of storage space but: Doesn't want to spend very much money Needs remote users (across the country) to be able to pull data from it and store to it, as well. Can this be done with an NAS Server such as the Western Digital Sharespace Network Storage System? I do not believe the client wants to spend over $1400 and HP is offering 8TB for $1299. • PSU requirement question for my PC setup.

  I understand that sometimes there may be a situation where the PSU is way more than required but in this case of mine, I'm not too sure. Sometimes when I play games, my computer will crash and restarts itself, 10 mins into the game. Once I received a message that says something like the power is overheating or something like that. Ok, so I have a 500W PSU. I have: 1x Internal DVD writer 1x SATA 250GB HD 1x Nvidia 8500 GT 2GB RAM. As I'm planning to get an additional 250GB SATA HD, I wonder if I need to increase my PSU as well -- in full knowledge of the previous crashes experienced before. Should I upgrade my PSU to 650W perhaps, or is that excessive?

  I have a list of machine names from my network that I have put in a batchfile to run through the list and show me who is logged onto each. psloggedon \machineA psloggedon \machineB psloggedon \machineC psloggedon \machineD psloggedon \machineE psloggedon \machineF Psloggedon works fine, however when it hits a machine that isnt actually on the network, it hangs for a good 30 - 60 seconds before moving onto the next machine...I was just wondering if there was any way to speed this up so that if it hits a machine that isnt on the network, it moves onto the next machine in the list much quicker. I have read in other places that this could be possible by adding a ping -n loop into the command but im not sure how to get that to work? any ideas guys? Many thanks in advance. Jimmy

• Windows server backup question

  Hi, Is it possible to make a backup of my Windows Server from the built-in Microsoft tool, but as long as my Hyper-V backups are stored safely and not backed up anywhere, I can still restore my Windows Server from the native backup and use the Hyper-v machines? So if I lost my C:\ and my VMs are stored remotely, I can restore from an earlier backup and use those VMs.

  If you have 2 raptor 10k rpm drives in Raid0, can you add another sata (7200prm) drive outside of the RAID or would it have to be inside the RAID? What would be the consequences of adding a 7200 RPM drive to the raptor 10k rpm RAID0 besides the I/O speed going to 7200rpm.

• Windows pysical server provisioning question with HPSA 7.8

  I have a physical server that I am trying to provision Windows to. At 58% of the way through copying files form the Core to the target server, the process hangs with either a samba time-out or an error indicating that %path%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. I can build a VM on the same subnet with the same media (merely a different profile to catch the different unattend.txt file) with no issues. I can also provision RHEL5 to this server with no issues. The buildmgr logs indicate that eventually the job is timing-out. Samba logs show that connections are made, and then eventually closed - about the time that the build process times-out. Any ideas on where to look next?

• ISA Server Route Add Question

  Hi All, I have a situation where I have and ISA 2006 server (on Win2k3) that has an internal and an externaly facing NIC's. All works fine but I need to add a couple of routes for the following reason: Our monitoring software is on a different network. Our Terminal server is on a different network. Currently, access to the internet, through this proxy server, from the terminal server fails. Also, monitoring of the ISA server via a remote monitor or the installed agent talking to the remote monitor (BMC) also fails. The default enterprise rule on ISA blocks the traffic as I beleive it doesn't trust / know about those networks. Here is my routing table: I need to add a couple of address, but this one being the main one: 192.168.245.137 / mask 255.255.255.192 / gateway 192.168.245.129 But I can't get it to work. Routing is not my strong point but at the moment have no one else available to help. Can you offer any assistance? Please ask if you need more info

• Neophyte question about using Subtotal and CountIf in Excel

  Hi, I'm using Excel and having some problems with Countif and I don't understand how it works differently from SubTotal. I used the GUI to subtotal stuff and all the subtotals are right. Then I attempted to use the Countif to see how many requirements passed. That worked for the first subtotal only. It's easy to see why. When I look at the box for the subtotal, it says: =SUBTOTAL(3,C286:C292) When I look at my formula for passed requirements, I have: =IF(ISTEXT(A285),COUNTIF(C286:C338,"=Passed"),"") Notice that the last column is wrong. How did the Subtotal manage to keep this correct? I typed in the formula for passed requirements and dragged it down the page. Everything behaved as expected (even the bit about ISTEXT dutifully figured out which row was which), but it got the last row wrong. Any ideas? • Simple SSH public/private key question

  I am trying to learn this instead of just following guides so I can recommend proper actions when people do ask (and they do). Here is what I got down. First, generate both key with command such as this: ssh-keygen -b 2048 -t rsa -C comment -f ~/.ssh/id_rsa Then you push the public part of the key into authorized_keys2 file cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 (and then chmod it to 600 or similar) And you download the private key to your computer (id_rsa) and feed that in to Putty to be read and authenticate. Are these the correct steps to setting this public/private key authentication for passwordless login to SSH?

My HP Pavilion p6754y has a PCI Express x16 slot on it's motherboard, I want to put a video car with something higher than either NVIDIA 8800GTS 512MB or greater or ATI 3850 512MB or greater but the only video cards I can find with those specs are PCI Express 2.0 x16. Is the PCI Express 2.0 x16 compatible with the PCI Express x16 slot?

• Security question pertaining web application deployment

  I am about to deploy a web application (in a couple months) with the following set-up (perhaps anyways): Ubuntu Lucid Lynx with: IP Tables firewall (white-list style with only 3 ports open) Custom SSH port (like 31847 or something) No "root" SSH access Long, random username (not just "admin" or something) with a long password (65 chars) PostgreSQL which only listens to localhost 256 bit SSL Cert Reverse proxy from NGINX to my application server (UWSGI) Assume that my colo is secure (Physical access isn't my concern for the time being) Application-level security (SQL injection, XSS, Directory Traversal, CSRF, etc) Perhaps IP masquerading (but I don't really understand this yet) Does this sound like a secure setup? I hear about people's web apps getting hacked all the time, and part of me thinks, "maybe they're just neglecting something", but the other part of me thinks, "maybe there's nothing you can do to protect your server, and those things are just measures to make it a little harder for script kiddies to get in". If I told you all of this, gave you my IP address, and told you what ports were available, would it be possible for you to get in (assuming you have a penetration testing tool), or is this really protected well.
