  • How do I get source file information with dumpbin /symbols when compiling with VS 2005?

    I have a tool which uses the output of dumpbin /symbols to do some dependency analysis with our C/C++ libraries. When we compiled the libs with VS 6.0, the dumpbin COFF SYMBOL TABLE contained entries like 000 00000008 DEBUG notype Filename | .file x:\mydir\mysource.c allowing me to get the relationship between sources and defined/used symbols, which is essential for my tool. When we compile with VS 2005, these entries are missing. When I look at the libs with a hex editor, it seems that there is no filename information at all included in the binary files, so it seems not to be a dumbin problem but is compilation related. So I'm looking for a way to get the Filename entries back into my libraries when compiling with VS 2005.

  • Is it possible to control the destination folder when checking out a project from VSS 2005?

    We are currently using VSS 2005 for source control - and please let me start by saying, I've read a lot of posts on Stackoverflow and I realize VSS is the devil. That being said... its what we have to work with now and I have a question about the checkout process. We have the code organized in a certain hierarchy on the vss server, but when we do a checkout we don't need that same hierarchy on our machines. Is there a way to control how visual studio 2008 and vss 2005 create the checkout destination folder so that I don't end up with the code being 9 folders deep on MY machine?

  • what's a good way to synchronize a sql server 2008 database from a 2005 database automatically?

    Ok, the scenario is... two servers, on completely different parts of the internet. The sql 2008 database just needs to get data updates and schema changes. It doesn't need to send anything to the 2005 database. Basically just suck data and schema as efficiently as possible automatically as a scheduled task. The database is quite huge.... but the changes per day are probablly around 20/30 megabytes of data/ I can't run any of the inbuilt replication on the 2005 database. I've had a wee look at the Sync Framework, I think that might do what I want, but seems a bit painful and requires a bit of work to get going. I'm wondering if there is tooling out there to make this easier? or?? not quite sure what my options are.

  • Can I create and connect to a SQL Server CE database if SQL Server 2005 isn't installed?

    Is there any way to do this? Update: Sorry, I should have included more information. I am trying to create and connect to a SQL CE database using System.Data.SqlServerCe in C# running on a PC (i.e. not running on a Windows Mobile device). This code: string connstr = "Data Source=\"" + filename + "\";Persist Security Info=False;"; System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeEngine engine = new SqlCeEngine(connstr); engine.CreateDatabase(); ... works fine on any PC that has SQL Server 2005 installed, but fails on any PC that doesn't have it installed. I'm trying to find out if there's any way to get this to work without installed SQL Server 2005 on the machine.

    Can I name a custom column in the SELECT statement and reference that in the WHERE clause without duplicating code? For example; SELECT RIGHT(REPLICATE('0', 5) + RTRIM(SOME_ID)), 5) AS DISPLAY_ID FROM dbo.MY_TABLE WHERE DISPLAY_ID LIKE '%005%' Only much more complicated. I want to maintain this code in one place only but SQL Server 2005 forces me to duplicate the custom SELECT in the WHERE clause. I believe this was possible in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 but no longer in 2005. Thanks.

    Hi all, I have been trying to upgrade our TFS 2005 to TFS 2010 but with no luck so far. I went through the TFS Installation guide and many upgrade guides but with no luck in overcoming the issue I am facing which seems to be unique and different to other described issues. In our company, we have a domain forest with several domains. Lets say domain A, B, and C. TFS is in domain A and has users from all these three domains. All domains have trust reltionships between them. However, domain C was deleted several months ago. With a bit of googling, I figured out that TFSConfig Identities command can be used to remap users from one domain to the other. I went ahead and created local users that matches the users we have from domain C and ran the TFSConfig Identities /Change command and it executed successfully. However, I still get the same error. I am stuck and can't figure out how to move forward :( I need your expertise, has anyone faced this issue before? Do I need to change these identities on TFS 2005 before I commence the upgrade? I forgot to mention, I am following the upgrade with a move approach. I created a virtual machine for testing the upgrade. Installed SQL server 2008, restored the TFS databases and installed TFS 2010 and ran the upgrade wizard. Regards, Nadeem

  • Insufficient Permissions Problems with MSDeploy and TFS Build 2010

    I ran into these problems on a TFS 2010 RC setup where I wanted to deploy a web site as part of the nightly build: C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets (3481): Web deployment task failed.(An error occurred when reading the IIS Configuration File 'MACHINE/REDIRECTION'. The identity performing the operation was 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'.)  An error occurred when reading the IIS Configuration File 'MACHINE/REDIRECTION'. The identity performing the operation was 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Filename: \\?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\redirection.config Error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions  As you can see I’m running the build service as NETWORK SERVICE which is quite usual. The first thing I did then was to give NETWORK SERVICE read access to the whole directory where redirection.config is sitting; C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config. That gave me a new error: C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets (3481): Web deployment task failed. (Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.) The reason for this problem was that NETWORK SERVICE didn’t have write permission to the place where I’ve told MSDeploy to put the web site physically on the disk. Once I’d given the NETWORK SERVICE the right permissions, MSDeploy completed as expected! NOTE! I’ve not had this problem with TFS 2010 RTM, so it might be just a RC issue!

  • SQL 2005 Transaction Rollback Hung–unresolved deadlock

    Encountered an interesting issue recently with a SQL 2005 sp3 Enterprise Edition system. Every weekend, a full database reindex was being run on this system – normally this took around one and a half hours. Then, one weekend, the job ran for over 17 hours  - and had yet to complete... At this point, DBA cancelled the job. Job status is now cancelled – issue over…   However, cancelling the job had not killed the reindex transaction – DBCC OPENTRAN was still showing the transaction being open. The oldest open transaction in the database was now over 17 hours old.  Consequently, transaction log % used growing dramatically and locks still being held in the database... Further attempts to kill the transaction did nothing. ie we had a transaction which could not be killed. In sysprocesses, it was apparent the SPID was in rollback status, but the spid was not accumulating CPU or IO. Was the SPID stuck ? On examination of the SQL errorlog – shortly after the reindex had started, a whole bunch of deadlock output had been produced by trace flag 1222. Then this :- spid5s      ***Stack Dump being sent to   xxxxxxx\SQLDump0042.txt spid5s      * ******************************************************************************* spid5s      * spid5s      * BEGIN STACK DUMP: spid5s      *   12/05/10 01:04:47 spid 5 spid5s      * spid5s      * Unresolved deadlock spid5s      * spid5s      *   spid5s      * ******************************************************************************* spid5s      * ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- spid5s      * Short Stack Dump spid5s      Stack Signature for the dump is 0x000001D7 spid5s      External dump process return code 0x20000001. Unresolved deadlock – don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these before…. A quick call to Microsoft support confirmed the following bug had been hit :- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961479 So, only option to get rid of the hung spid – to restart SQL Server… Fortunately SQL Server restarted without any issues. I was pleasantly surprised to see that recovery on this particular database was fast. However, restarting SQL Server to fix an issue is not something I would normally rush to do... Short term fix – the reindex was changed to use MAXDOP of 1. Longer term fix will be to apply the correct CU, or wait for SQL 2005 sp 4 ?? This should be released any day soon I hope..

    I have two servers running Virtual server 2005 R2 SP1. I'm using Symantec Backup Exec 10d for backups. One server runs the backups fine but the other will cause the vm's to crash when it tries to backup. I think the problem is because the "Microsoft Vitual Server 2005 Writer" is not showing up when I run "vssadmin list writers". Can I install the writer without reinstalling VS 2005?

    i've been attempting to script a database using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. i cannot get it to script some objects. It scripts others, but skips some. i can provide detailed screen shots the options being selected including all tables the folder where the script files will go the folder being empty before scripting the scripting process saying Sucess when scripting a table the destination folder no longer empty, with a hundred or so script files the script of some tables not being in the folder. And earlier SSMS would not script some views. Is this a known thing that the the Generate Scripts task does not generate scripts? Update Known issue on Microsoft Connect, but Microsoft couldn't repro the steps, so they closed closed the ticket. Fails on SQL Server 2005, also fails on SQL Server 2008.   • Forbidden Patterns Check-In Policy in TFS 2010

    I've been trying to use the Forbidden Patterns part of the TFS 2010 Power Tools and I'm just not understanding something - I simply cannot get anything to change as I try to use this! I'm using the version that was released recently (I believe April 23, 2010), so it's not an old version. First off, yes, I know it's regex based, so let's clear that doubt... I have tried to block the following scenarios: 1) I have modified all of my T4 EF templates to generate files named EntityName.gen.cs. I then attempted to prevent TFS from wanting to check those files in. I used the regular expression \.gen\.cs\z and it didn't change a single thing! I even tried it without the \z and nadda! 2) I don't want app.config and web.config files to be checked-in by default because we have these things stored into app.config.base and web.config.base files that our build scripts use to generate our per-environment app.config and web.config files. As such, I tried the following regexes and again, nothing worked! web\.config\z, app\.config\z, web\.release\.config\z and web\.debug\.config\z. What is it that I am screwing up with this?

  • Get history of file changes from TFS

    I'm trying to make some way of figuring out who to "blame" when an exception is thrown in our application (at work). It could be me causing it of course but I can accept that :). But to do this I need the history of a file in TFS so I can check who last made a change at the line of the exception. Its of course not always at the row of the exception that the erroneous change was inserted, so I would probably also need to check any changes to the same file and lastly any check-ins made very recently. I'm not sure how I will work out this but I would like to check with the community first if there is any already existing solutions for this? I have no experience with the TFS API yet so I have no way of telling whats possible and whats not. I guess I would integrate this into our app in the unhandled exceptions-handler. When some candidates of the exception is found I need to inform them by email. In the process it would be nice to log how many times a certain exception has been thrown by any user on our intranet, who, when, how etc. It could save us a lot of time (and money).

  • SQL Server 2005: Improving performance for thousands or Insert requests. logout-login time= 120ms.

    Can somebody shed some lights on how SQL Server 2005 deals with may request issued by a client using ADO.NET 2.0. Below is the shortend output of SQL Trace. I can see that connection pooling is working (I believe there is only one connection being pooled). What is not clear to me is why we have so many sp_reset_connection calls i.e a series of: Audit Login, SQL:BatchStarting, RPC:Starting and Audit Logout for each loop in for loop below. I can see that there is constant switching between tempdb and master database which leads me to conclude that we lost the context when next connection is created by fetching it from the pool based on ConectionString argument. I can see that every 15ms I can get 100-200 login/logout per second (reported at the same time by Profiler). The after 15ms I have again a series fo 100-200 login/logout per second. I need clarification on how this might affect much complex insert queries in production environment. I use Enterprise Library 2006, the code is compiled with VS 2005 and it is a console application that parses a flat file with 10 of thousand of rows grouping parent-child rows, runs on an application server and runs 2 stored procedure on a remote SQL Server 2005 inserting a parent record, retrieves Identity value and using it calls the second stored procedure 1, 2 or multiple times (sometimes several thousands) inserting child records. The child table has close to 10 million records with 5-10 indexes some of them being covering non-clustered. There is a pretty complex Insert trigger that copies inserted detail record to an archive table. All in all I only have 7 inserts per second which means it can take 2-4 hours for 50 thousand records. When I run Profiler on the test server (that is almost equivalent with production server) I can see that there is about 120ms between Audit Logout and Audit Login trace entries which almost give me chance to insert about 8 records. So my question is if there is some way to improve inserting of records since the company loads 100 thousands of records and does daily planning and has SLA to fulfill client request coming as flat file orders and some big files 10 thousands have to be processed(imported quickly). 4 hours to import 60 thousands should be reduced to 30 minutes. I was thinking to use BatchSize of DataAdapter to send multiple stored procedure calls, SQL Bulk inserts to batch multiple inserts from DataReader or DataTable, SSIS fast load. But I don't know how to properly analyze re-indexing and stats population and maybe this has to take some time to finish. What is worse is that the company uses the biggest table for reporting and other online processing and indexes cannot be dropped. I manage transaction manually by setting a field to a value and do an transactional update changing that value to a new value that other applications are using to get committed rows. Please advise how to approach this problem. For now I am trying to have a staging tables with minimal logging in a separate database and no indexes and I will try to do batched (massive) parent child inserts. I believe Production DB has simple recovery model, but it could be full recovery. If DB user that is being used by my .NET console application has bulkadmin role does it mean its bulk inserts are minimally logged. I understand that when a table has clustered and many non-clustered indexes that inserts are still logged for each row. Connection pooling is working, but with many login/logouts.     Hello Everyone, Yesterday, I asked a question Migrate to TFS and the answer mentioned some very good tools which can be very helpful. Thanks to jwanagel. But I forgot to mention there the VSS server and TFS server are two different machines. And when you've both on different location it seems you would have to take a different path. What would I have to do to migrate my Visual SourceSafe database which is on a different machine to a TFS Server which is on an another machine? Thanks.

  • Visual Studio 2008: Can't connect to known good TFS 2010 beta 2

    A freshly installed TFS 2010 Beta 2 is at http://serverX:8080/tfs. A Windows 7 developer machine with VS 2008 Pro SP1 and the VS2008 Team Explorer (no SP). The TFS 2008 Service Pack 1 didn't work for me - "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer." The developer machine is able to browse the TFS site at the above URL. The Issue is around trying to add the TFS server into the Team Explorer window in Visual Studio 2008. Here's a screenshot showing the error: unable to connect to this Team Foundation Server. Possible reasons for failure include: The Team Foundation Server name, port number or protocol is incorrect. The Team Foundation Server is offline. Password is expired or incorrect. The TFS server is up and running properly. Firewall ports are open, and is accessible via the browser on the dev machine!! larger image Question: how can you connect from VS 2008 Pro to a TFS 2010 Beta 2 server? Resolution Here's how I solved this problem: installed VS 2008 Team Explorer as above. re-install VS 2008 Service Pack 1 when adding a TFS server to Team Explorer, you MUST specify the URL as such: http://[tfsserver]:[port]/[vdir]/[projectCollection] in my case above, it was http://serverX:8080/tfs/AppDev-TestProject you cannot simply add the TFS server name and have VS look for all Project Collections on the server.     In the context of the TFS version control SDK (Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl), what exactly is deletionID? It is a property of Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Client.Item. It is also a parameter to some of the query methods on Microsoft.TeamFoundation.VersionControl.Client. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it means, and how it might impact queries.
