• LINQ for SQL Developers and DBA’s

  Firstly I’d just like to thank the guys who organise the SQL Server User Group (Martin/Tony/Chris) and for giving me the opportunity to speak at the recent event. Firstly the demo’s were all done using LINQPad 4.0 which can be downloaded here: http://www.linqpad.net/ There are 2 versions 3.5/4.0 With 3.5 you should be able to replicate the problem I showed where a query using a parameter which is X characters long would create a different execution plan to a query which uses a parameter which is Y characters long, otherwise I would just use 4.0 The sample database used is AdventureWorksLT2008 which can be downloaded from here: http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/37109 The scripts have been named so that you can select the appropriate way to run them i.e.: C# expression / C#statement, each script can be run individually be highlighting the query and clicking the play symbol or hitting F5. • FFmpeg multi pass encoding

  Sorry, I am really new to this, and have problems doing some tasks without help. So I have a terminal command: ffmpeg \ -y \ -i '/media/levan/BEEA60D8EA608E89/Downloads/Videos/Tony Braxton - Un-Break My Heart.VOB' \ -s 1920x1080 \ -aspect 16:9 \ -r 25 \ -b 15550k \ -bt 19792k \ -vcodec libtheora \ -acodec libvorbis \ -ac 2 \ -ar 48000 \ -ab 320k \ ddd.ogg and I want to have 3 pass video in output video, but how do I accomplish this? I found that I must write -pass n command some where, but where to write it I do not know. I tested this and wrote -pass 3 at the end but then the terminal just showed a > symbol.

• ASUS U24a can't boot without live disk

  I recently picked up a new ASUS U24a while travelling in asia. I've managed to go through hell with the UEFI setup, and finally now have a working GRUB. However, I can't manage to get past the "Loading initial ramdisk". If I boot the live CD-USB (only in BIOS legacy mode), I get a wonderful, working Ubuntu. I finally managed to get UEFI installed on the hard-drive (no option for legacy BIOS boot, or I'd be there in a flash!), and can boot in UEFI mode into GRUB2. But... I can't manage to get past the "loading initial ramdisk". It appears that the disk drivers are failing (there is no disk activity after this point). • Adding confirmable module to an existing site using Devise

  Hi all, I'm using devise for a web app and wanted to add the confirmable module to the site. However, since a confirmation_token isn't generated users can't sign in. When clicking the 'Didn't receive confirmation instructions?' link the token still isn't generated. What is the best way to get this to work? Many thanks, Tony

• DPAPI + Entropy

  We have a WPF app that allows our users to download encrypted content and we want to provide the ability to decrypt this content off-line. The idea is to download the keys and store them using the DPAPI but I'm having trouble with the entropy parameter. Is there any way to generate an entropy to consistently use for the DPAPI functions with out hardcoding/storing them? Thanks Tony

• Data-Virtualization problem with SurfaceScrollViewer

  I'm in a situation where I'm using an ItemsControl with a SurfaceScrollViewer bound to an AsyncVirtualizingCollection and all of the data is being requested. I'm aware that it's due to the ItemsControl request all of the data but I'm not sure how to get around this. I've tried the AsyncVirtualizingCollection bound to a ListBox and it works fine and I'm now attempting to having it bound to a SurfaceListBox but the problem persists. • iphone scrolling ticker example?

  I'm looking at adding a user comment ticker to my iPhone/iPad polling app (Show of Hands). The comments would obviously need to be pulled from a central web source - either a database or perhaps even simple flat files. The ticker would also need to support basic controls (speed, pause, etc.) Can anyone that had tried doing something like this point me to your work and/or pass along any implemetation ideas? • Android: Sorting a merged cursor

  Hi, I'm wondering if there's any way to merge two cursors together and then resort them. I can easily merge two cursors together by using a MergedCursor, but that doesn't sort them. I have two sets of contacts in two separate cursors (with totally different schemas) and I want to merge them and sort them by name (the name column is different in the two cursors). • GAC locking problem when running deployment

  We have a NANT script that uses msbuild to compile our visual studio solutions and deploys the .dlls into the GAC. This works well on our integration/test servers as part of continuous integration, cruise control uses the NANT scripts and every time the dlls are put into the GAC without problem. On our local development machines, where we use subversion/vs.net etc. for development, frequently certain dlls do not make it to the GAC when we run the build. We think we have narrowed this down to visual studio and/or a plug in locking the GAC or the dlls for some reason. Strangely if we run the build a second time all the dlls make it to the GAC. We have added various iisreset's to the NANT script in the hope of releasing the lock but to no avail. Can anyone suggest a good approach to attack this problem? All the best

• Rackspace copy script failure message "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out"

  I am using Rackspace for Ubuntu cloud server. Everyday a script(I guess the script is from rackspace) executes on the cloud servers which copies the backfile to the Rackspace CloudFiles and sends the mail as if the files are copied and I've scheduled the script on the cloud servers. I've no much knowledge of the script and I guess the script is based on Cruise(as I could see build.xml, some jar files ...). Everyday the files are copied to the Rackspace from cloud servers but sometimes don't know why, the files will be copied to Rackspace sending an error failure message or sometimes the files will not be copied and sends the error failure message like the one below. Error while backing up on Station1 on 03/03/2011 04:50 AM and reason for error is java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out Anybody using Rackspace?, anybody has any fix for this?

• Why do some PDFs lag in Adobe Acrobat?

  I have a handful of PDFs open. One of them in particular is extremely laggy, almost to the point of being unreadable. When I scroll through its pages, it's almost like an extreme version of v-sync being turned off. Very choppy. Overall system resources are plentiful, and all of the other PDFs cruise up and down with no stuttering or problems. I've tried closing and reopening the problem PDF to no avail. It's a small PDF, only 3MB in size, with no graphics (only programming code snippets). Surely, it must be some type of problem with the specific PDF (I'll try opening it in another PDF-viewing program, rather than Acrobat X). Possible corruption? Could there be some type of GPU/hardware-acceleration intervening going on? I've never heard of such with PDF-viewing.

• Hot to get website/product reviews reflected in Google's search results using review-aggregate format

  I am managing a website called Rent A Boat Amsterdam. We have a system that gathers reviews from people that have used our services and that publishes these customer reviews making them available for all website visitors. When these customer reviews are published we have placed them within the appropriate tags according to the guidelines set by Google, which you can find here.
